Propagators for gauge-invariant observables in cosmology

We make a proposal for gauge-invariant observables in perturbative quantum gravity in cosmological spacetimes, building on the recent work of Brunetti et al. [JHEP 08 (2016) 032]. These observables are relational, and are obtained by evaluating the field operator in a field-dependent coordinate system. We show that it is possible to define this coordinate system such that the non-localities inherent in any higher-order observable in quantum gravity are causal, i.e., the value of the gauge-invariant observable at a point $x$ only depends on the metric and inflation perturbations in the past light cone of $x$. We then construct propagators for the metric and inflaton perturbations in a gauge adapted to that coordinate system, which simplifies the calculation of loop corrections, and give explicit expressions for relevant cases: matter- and radiation-dominated eras and slow-roll inflation.

Gauge-invariant quantum gravitational corrections to correlation functions

A recent proposal for gauge-invariant observables in inflation [R. Brunetti et al., JHEP 1608 (2016) 032] is examined. We give a generalisation of their construction to general background spacetimes. In flat space, we calculate one-loop graviton corrections to a scalar two-point function in a general gauge for the graviton. We explicitely show how the gauge-dependent terms cancel between the usual self-energy contributions and the additional corrections inherent in these observables. The one-loop corrections have the expected functional form, contrary to another recently studied proposal for gauge-invariant observables [M. B. Fröb, Class. Quant. Grav. 35 (2018) 035005] where this is not the case. Furthermore, we determine the one-loop graviton corrections to the four-point coupling of the gauge-invariant scalar field, and the corresponding running of the coupling constant induced by graviton loops. Interestingly, the $β$ function is negative for all values of the non-minimal coupling of the scalar field to curvature.

Green's functions and Hadamard parametrices for vector and tensor fields in general linear covariant gauges

We determine the retarded and advanced Green's functions and Hadamard parametrices in curved spacetimes for linearized massive and massless gauge bosons and linearized Einstein gravity with a cosmological constant in general linear covariant gauges. These vector and tensor parametrices contain additional singular terms compared with their Feynman/de Donder-gauge counterpart. We also give explicit recursion relations for the Hadamard coefficients, and indicate their generalization to $n$ dimensions. Furthermore, we express the divergence and trace of the vector and tensor Green's functions in terms of derivatives of scalar and vector Green's functions, and show how these relations appear as Ward identities in the free quantum theory.

One-loop quantum gravitational corrections to the scalar two-point function at fixed geodesic distance

We study a proposal for gauge-invariant correlation functions in perturbative quantum gravity, which are obtained by fixing the geodesic distance between points in the fluctuating geometry. These correlation functions are non-local and strongly divergent, and we show how to renormalise them by performing a "wave function renormalisation" of the geodesic embedding coordinates. The result is finite and gauge-independent, but displays unusual features such as double logarithms at one-loop order.

Compactly supported linearised observables in single-field inflation

We investigate the gauge-invariant observables constructed by smearing the graviton and inflaton fields by compactly supported tensors at linear order in general single-field inflation. These observables correspond to gauge-invariant quantities that can be measured locally. In particular, we show that these observables are equivalent to (smeared) local gauge-invariant observables such as the linearised Weyl tensor, which have better infrared properties than the graviton and inflaton fields. Special cases include the equivalence between the compactly supported gauge-invariant graviton observable and the smeared linearised Weyl tensor in Minkowski and de Sitter spaces. Our results indicate that the infrared divergences in the tensor and scalar perturbations in single-field inflation have the same status as in de Sitter space and are both a gauge artefact, in a certain technical sense, at tree level.

Quantum corrections for spinning particles in de Sitter

We compute the one-loop quantum corrections to the gravitational potentials of a spinning point particle in a de Sitter background, due to the vacuum polarisation induced by conformal fields in an effective field theory approach. We consider arbitrary conformal field theories, assuming only that the theory contains a large number $N$ of fields in order to separate their contribution from the one induced by virtual gravitons. The corrections are described in a gauge-invariant way, classifying the induced metric perturbations around the de Sitter background according to their behaviour under transformations on equal-time hypersurfaces. There are six gauge-invariant modes: two scalar Bardeen potentials, one transverse vector and one transverse traceless tensor, of which one scalar and the vector couple to the spinning particle. The quantum corrections consist of three different parts: a generalisation of the flat-space correction, which is only significant at distances of the order of the Planck length; a constant correction depending on the undetermined parameters of the renormalised effective action; and a term which grows logarithmically with the distance from the particle. This last term is the most interesting, and when resummed gives a modified power law, enhancing the gravitational force at large distances. As a check on the accuracy of our calculation, we recover the linearised Kerr-de Sitter metric in the classical limit and the flat-space quantum correction in the limit of vanishing Hubble constant.

Quantum corrections to the gravitational potentials of a point source due to conformal fields in de Sitter

We derive the leading quantum corrections to the gravitational potentials in a de Sitter background, due to the vacuum polarization from loops of conformal fields. Our results are valid for arbitrary conformal theories, even strongly interacting ones, and are expressed using the coefficients $b$ and $b'$ appearing in the trace anomaly. Apart from the de Sitter generalization of the known flat-space results, we find two additional contributions: one which depends on the finite coefficients of terms quadratic in the curvature appearing in the renormalized effective action, and one which grows logarithmically with physical distance. While the first contribution corresponds to a rescaling of the effective mass, the second contribution leads to a slower fall-off of the Newton potential at large distances, and is potentially measurable.

Quantum gravitational corrections for spinning particles

We calculate the quantum corrections to the gauge-invariant gravitational potentials of spinning particles in flat space, induced by loops of both massive and massless matter fields of various types. While the corrections to the Newtonian potential induced by massless conformal matter for spinless particles are well-known, and the same corrections due to massless minimally coupled scalars [Class. Quant. Grav. 27 (2010) 245008], massless non-conformal scalars [Phys. Rev. D 87 (2013) 104027] and massive scalars, fermions and vector bosons [Phys. Rev. D 91 (2015) 064047] have been recently derived, spinning particles receive additional corrections which are the subject of the present work. We give both fully analytic results valid for all distances from the particle, and present numerical results as well as asymptotic expansions. At large distances from the particle, the corrections due to massive fields are exponentially suppressed in comparison to the corrections from massless fields, as one would expect. However, a surprising result of our analysis is that close to the particle itself, on distances comparable to the Compton wavelength of the massive fields running in the loops, these corrections can be enhanced with respect to the massless case.

All-order bounds for correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators in Yang-Mills theory

We give a complete, self-contained, and mathematically rigorous proof that Euclidean Yang-Mills theories are perturbatively renormalisable, in the sense that all correlation functions of arbitrary composite local operators fulfil suitable Ward identities. Our proof treats rigorously both all ultraviolet and infrared problems of the theory and provides, in the end, detailed analytical bounds on the correlation functions of an arbitrary number of composite local operators. These bounds are formulated in terms of certain weighted spanning trees extending between the insertion points of these operators. Our proofs are obtained within the framework of the Wilson-Wegner-Polchinski-Wetterich renormalisation group flow equations, combined with estimation techniques based on tree structures. Compared with previous mathematical treatments of massless theories without local gauge invariance [R. Guida and Ch. Kopper, arXiv:1103.5692; J. Holland, S. Hollands, and Ch. Kopper, Commun. Math. Phys. 342 (2016) 385] our constructions require several technical advances; in particular, we need to fully control the BRST invariance of our correlation functions.

Mode-sum construction of the covariant graviton two-point function in the Poincaré patch of de Sitter space

We construct the graviton two-point function for a two-parameter family of linear covariant gauges in n-dimensional de Sitter space. The construction is performed via the mode-sum method in the Bunch-Davies vacuum in the Poincaré patch, and a Fierz-Pauli mass term is introduced to regularize the infrared (IR) divergences. The resulting two-point function is de Sitter-invariant, and free of IR divergences in the massless limit (for a certain range of parameters) though analytic continuation with respect to the mass for the pure-gauge sector of the two-point function is necessary for this result. This general result agrees with the propagator obtained by analytic continuation from the sphere [Phys. Rev. D 34, 3670 (1986); Class. Quant. Grav. 18, 4317 (2001)]. However, if one starts with strictly zero mass theory, the IR divergences are absent only for a specific value of one of the two parameters, with the other parameter left generic. These findings agree with recent calculations in the Landau (exact) gauge [J. Math. Phys. 53, 122502 (2012)], where IR divergences do appear in the spin-two (tensor) part of the two-point function. However, we find the strength (including the sign) of the IR divergence to be different from the one found in this reference.

Mapping AdS to dS spaces and back

We derive a map between Einstein spaces of positive and negative curvature, including scalar matter. Starting from a space of positive curvature with some dimensions compactified on a sphere and analytically continuing the number of compact dimensions, we obtain a space of negative curvature with a compact hyperbolic subspace, and vice versa. Prime examples of such spaces are de Sitter (dS) and anti-de Sitter (AdS) space, as well as black hole spacetimes with (A)dS asymptotics and perturbed versions thereof, which play an important role in holography. This map extends work done by Caldarelli et al., who map asymptotically AdS spaces to Ricci-flat ones. A remarkable result is that the boundary of asymptotically AdS spaces is mapped to a brane in the bulk of de Sitter, and perturbations near the AdS boundary are sourced by a stress tensor confined to this brane. We also calculate the Brown-York stress tensor for the perturbed AdS metric, which turns out to be the negative of the stress tensor on the de Sitter brane. The map can also be used as a solution generator, and we obtain a Kerr/AdS solution with hyperbolic horizon from a known Kerr/dS one.

The Weyl tensor correlator in cosmological spacetimes

We give a general expression for the Weyl tensor two-point function in a general Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetime. We work in reduced phase space for the perturbations, i.e., quantize only the dynamical degrees of freedom without adding any gauge-fixing term. The general formula is illustrated by a calculation in slow-roll single-field inflation to first order in the slow-roll parameters $ε$ and $δ$, and the result is shown to have the correct de Sitter limit as $ε, δ\to 0$. Furthermore, it is seen that the Weyl tensor correlation function does not suffer from infrared divergences, unlike the two-point functions of the metric and scalar field perturbations. Lastly, we show how to recover the usual tensor power spectrum from the Weyl tensor correlation function.

Riemann correlator in de Sitter including loop corrections from conformal fields

The Riemann correlator with appropriately raised indices characterizes in a gauge-invariant way the quantum metric fluctuations around de Sitter spacetime including loop corrections from matter fields. Specializing to conformal fields and employing a method that selects the de Sitter-invariant vacuum in the Poincaré patch, we obtain the exact result for the Riemann correlator through order $H^4/m_\mathrm{p}^4$. The result is expressed in a manifestly de Sitter-invariant form in terms of maximally symmetric bitensors. Its behavior for both short and long distances (sub- and superhorizon scales) is analyzed in detail. Furthermore, by carefully taking the flat-space limit, the explicit result for the Riemann correlator for metric fluctuations around Minkowki spacetime is also obtained. Although the main focus is on free scalar fields (our calculation corresponds then to one-loop order in the matter fields), the result for general conformal field theories is also derived.

Mode-sum construction of the two-point functions for the Stueckelberg vector fields in the Poincaré patch of de Sitter space

We perform canonical quantization of the Stueckelberg Lagrangian for massive vector fields in the conformally flat patch of de Sitter space in the Bunch-Davies vacuum and find their Wightman two-point functions by the mode-sum method. We discuss the zero-mass limit of these two-point functions and their limits where the Stueckelberg parameter $ξ$ tends to zero or infinity. It is shown that our results reproduce the standard flat-space propagator in the appropriate limit. We also point out that the classic work of Allen and Jacobson for the two-point function of the Proca field and a recent work by Tsamis and Woodard for that of the transverse vector field are two limits of our two-point function, one for $ξ\to \infty$ and the other for $ξ\to 0$. Thus, these two works are consistent with each other, contrary to the claim by the latter authors.

Schwinger effect in de Sitter space

We consider Schwinger pair production in 1+1 dimensional de Sitter space, filled with a constant electric field $E$. This can be thought of as a model for describing false vacuum decay beyond the semiclassical approximation, where pairs of a quantum field $ϕ$ of mass $m$ and charge $e$ play the role of vacuum bubbles. We find that the adiabatic "in" vacuum associated with the flat chart develops a space-like expectation value for the current $J$, which manifestly breaks the de Sitter invariance of the background fields. We derive a simple expression for $J(E)$, showing that both "upward" and "downward" tunneling contribute to the build-up of the current. For heavy fields, with $m^2\gg eE,H^2$, the current is exponentially suppressed, in agreement with the results of semiclassical instanton methods. Here $H$ is the inverse de Sitter radius. On the other hand, light fields with $ m \ll H$ lead to a phenomenon of infrared hyperconductivity, where a very small electric field $mH \lesssim eE \ll H^2$ leads to a very large current $J \sim H^3 /E$. We also show that all Hadamard states for $ϕ$ necessarily break de Sitter invariance. Finally, we comment on the role of initial conditions, and "persistence of memory" effects.

Fully renormalized stress tensor correlator in flat space

We present a general procedure to renormalize the stress tensor two-point correlation function on a Minkowski background in position space. The method is shown in detail for the case of a free massive scalar field in the standard Minkowski vacuum state, and explicit expressions are given for the counterterms and finite parts, which are in full accordance with earlier results for the massless case. For the general case in position space, only regularized --- but not renormalized --- results have been obtained previously. After a Fourier transformation to momentum space, we also check agreement with a previous calculation there. We generalize our results to general Hadamard states. Furthermore, the proposed procedure can presumably be generalized to the important case of an inflationary spacetime background, where the transition to momentum space is in general not possible.

Nonperturbative semiclassical stability of de Sitter spacetime for small metric deviations

We consider the linearized semiclassical Einstein equations for small deviations around de Sitter spacetime including the vacuum polarization effects of conformal fields. Employing the method of order reduction, we find the exact solutions for general metric perturbations (of scalar, vector and tensor type). Our exact (nonperturbative) solutions show clearly that in this case de Sitter is stable with respect to small metric deviations and a late-time attractor. Furthermore, they also reveal a breakdown of perturbative solutions for a sufficiently long evolution inside the horizon. Our results are valid for any conformal theory, even self-interacting ones with arbitrarily strong coupling.

One-loop gravitational wave spectrum in de Sitter spacetime

The two-point function for tensor metric perturbations around de Sitter spacetime including one-loop corrections from massless conformally coupled scalar fields is calculated exactly. We work in the Poincaré patch (with spatially flat sections) and employ dimensional regularization for the renormalization process. Unlike previous studies we obtain the result for arbitrary time separations rather than just equal times. Moreover, in contrast to existing results for tensor perturbations, ours is manifestly invariant with respect to the subgroup of de Sitter isometries corresponding to a simultaneous time translation and rescaling of the spatial coordinates. Having selected the right initial state for the interacting theory via an appropriate iεprescription is crucial for that. Finally, we show that although the two-point function is a well-defined spacetime distribution, the equal-time limit of its spatial Fourier transform is divergent. Therefore, contrary to the well-defined distribution for arbitrary time separations, the power spectrum is strictly speaking ill-defined when loop corrections are included.
