Families of Blowups of the Real Affine Plane: Classification, Isotopies and Visualization

We classify embedded blowups of the real affine plane up to oriented isomorphy. We show that two blowups in the same isomorphism class are isotopic, using a matrix deformation argument similar to an idea given by Shastri. This answers two questions which were motivated by the interactive visualizations of such blowups (see the work of the first author in [Elemente der Mathematik 50 (1995) 149-163] and the second author and Stussak in [IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics 19 (2013) 978-990] and the references there).

Projective varieties of maximal sectional regularity

We study projective varieties $X \subset \mathbb{P}^r$ of dimension $n \geq 2$, of codimension $c \geq 3$ and of degree $d \geq c + 3$ that are of maximal sectional regularity, i.e. varieties for which the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $\reg (\mathcal{C})$ of a general linear curve section is equal to $d -c+1$, the maximal possible value (see \cite{GruLPe}). As one of the main results we classify all varieties of maximal sectional regularity. If $X$ is a variety of maximal sectional regularity, then either (a) it is a divisor on a rational normal $(n+1)$-fold scroll $Y \subset \mathbb{P}^{n+3}$ or else (b) there is an $n$-dimensional linear subspace $\mathbb{F} \subset \mathbb{P}^r$ such that $X \cap \mathbb{F} \subset \mathbb{F}$ is a hypersurface of degree $d-c+1$. Moreover, suppose that $n = 2$ or the characteristic of the ground field is zero. Then in case (b) we obtain a precise description of $X$ as a birational linear projection of a rational normal $n$-fold scroll.

On surfaces of maximal sectional regularity

We study projective surfaces $X \subset \mathbb{P}^r$ (with $r \geq 5$) of maximal sectional regularity and degree $d > r$, hence surfaces for which the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $\reg(\mathcal{C})$ of a general hyperplane section curve $\mathcal{C} = X \cap \mathbb{P}^{r-1}$ takes the maximally possible value $d-r+3$. We use the classification of varieties of maximal sectional regularity of \cite{BLPS1} to see that these surfaces are either particular divisors on a smooth rational $3$-fold scroll $S(1,1,1)\subset \mathbb{P}^5$, or else admit a plane $\mathbb{F} = \mathbb{P}^2 \subset \mathbb{P}^r$ such that $X \cap \mathbb{F} \subset \mathbb{F}$ is a pure curve of degree $d-r+3$. We show that our surfaces are either cones over curves of maximal regularity, or almost non-singular projections of smooth rational surface scrolls. We use this to show that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of such a surface $X$ satisfies the equality $\reg(X) = d-r+3$ and we compute or estimate various of the cohomological invariants as well as the Betti numbers of such surfaces. We also study the geometry of extremal secant lines of our surfaces $X$, more precisely the closure $Σ(X)$ of the set of all proper extremal secant lines to $X$ in the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}(1, \mathbb{P}^r).$

We study the the extremal variety $\mathbb{F}(X)$ of these surfaces $X$, that is the closed union of the extremal secant lines of all smooth hyperplane section curves of $X$. We show that $\mathbb{F}(X)$ is either a plane or that otherwise $r =5$ and $\mathbb{F}(X)$ is a rational smooth threefold scroll $S(1,1,1) \subset \mathbb{P}^5$.

Tame Loci of Certain Local Cohomology Modules

Let $M$ be a finitely generated graded module over a Noetherian homogeneous ring $R = \bigoplus_{n \in \mathbb{N}_0}R_n$. For each $i \in \mathbb{N}_0$ let $H^i_{R_{+}}(M)$ denote the $i$-th local cohomology module of $M$ with respect to the irrelevant ideal $R_+ = \bigoplus_{n > 0} R_n$ of $R$, furnished with its natural grading. We study the tame loci $\ft^i(M)^{\leq 3}$ at level $i \in \mathbb{N}_0$ in codimension $\leq 3$ of $M$, that is the sets of all primes $\fp_0 \subset R_0$ of height $\leq 3$ such that the graded $R_{\fp_0}$-modules $H^i_{R_{+}}(M)_{\fp_0}$ are tame.

Projective Curves with maximal regularity and applications to syzygies and surfaces

We first show that the union of a projective curve with one of its extremal secant lines satisfies the linear general position principle for hyperplane sections. We use this to give an improved approximation of the Betti numbers of curves ${\mathcal C} \subset \mathbb P^r_K$ of maximal regularity with $°{\mathcal C} \leq 2r -3.$ In particular we specify the number and degrees of generators of the vanishing ideal of such curves. We apply these results to study surfaces $X \subset \mathbb P^r_K$ whose generic hyperplane section is a curve of maximal regularity. We first give a criterion for "an early decent of the Hartshorne-Rao function" of such surfaces. We use this criterion to give a lower bound on the degree for a class of these surfaces. Then, we study surfaces $X \subset \mathbb P^r_K$ for which $h^1(\mathbb P^r_K, {\mathcal I}_X(1))$ takes a value close to the possible maximum $°X - r +1.$ We give a lower bound on the degree of such surfaces. We illustrate our results by a number of examples, computed by means of {\sc Singular}, which show a rich variety of occuring phenomena.

Boundedness of Cohomology

Let $d \in \N$ and let $\D^d$ denote the class of all pairs $(R,M)$ in which $R = \bigoplus_{n \in \N_0} R_n$ is a Noetherian homogeneous ring with Artinian base ring $R_0$ and such that $M$ is a finitely generated graded $R$-module of dimension $\leq d$. The cohomology table of a pair $(R,M) \in \D^d$ is defined as the family of non-negative integers $d_M:= (d^i_M(n))_{(i,n) \in \N \times \Z}$. We say that a subclass $\mathcal{C}$ of $\D^d$ is of finite cohomology if the set $\{d_M \mid (R,M) \in \C\}$ is finite. A set $\mathbb{S} \subseteq \{0,... ,d-1\}\times \Z$ is said to bound cohomology, if for each family $(h^σ)_{σ\in \mathbb{S}}$ of non-negative integers, the class $\{(R,M) \in \D^d\mid d^i_M(n) \leq h^{(i,n)} {for all} (i,n) \in \mathbb{S}\}$ is of finite cohomology. Our main result says that this is the case if and only if $\mathbb{S}$ contains a quasi diagonal, that is a set of the form $\{(i,n_i)| i=0,..., d-1\}$ with integers $n_0> n_1 > ... > n_{d-1}$. We draw a number of conclusions of this boundedness criterion.

Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of deficiency modules

Let $d \in \N$ and let $M$ be a finitely generated graded module of dimension $\leq d$ over a Noetherian homogeneous ring $R$ with local Artinian base ring $R_0$. Let $\beg(M)$, $\gendeg(M)$ and $\reg(M)$ respectively denote the beginning, the generating degree and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $M$. If $i \in \N_0$ and $n \in Z$, let $d^i_M(n)$ denote the $R_0$-length of the $n$-th graded component of the $i$-th $R_+$-transform module $D^i_{R_+}(M)$ of $M$ and let $K^i(M)$ denote the $i$-th deficiency module of $M$. Our main result says, that $\reg(K^i(M))$ is bounded in terms of $\beg(M)$ and the "diagonal values" $d^j_M(-j)$ with $j = 0,..., d-1$. As an application of this we get a number of further bounding results for $\reg(K^i(M))$.

Arithmetic properties of projective varieties of almost minimal degree

We study the arithmetic properties of projective varieties of almost minimal degree, that is of non-degenerate irreducible projective varieties whose degree exceeds the codimension by precisely 2. We notably show, that such a variety $X \subset {\mathbb P}^r$ is either arithmetically normal (and arithmetically Gorenstein) or a projection of a variety of minimal degree $\tilde {X} \subset {\mathbb P}^{r + 1}$ from an appropriate point $p \in {\mathbb P}^{r + 1} \setminus \tilde {X}$. We focus on the latter situation and study $X$ by means of the projection $\tilde {X} \to X$. If $X$ is not arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay, the homogeneous coordinate ring $B$ of the projecting variety $\tilde {X}$ is the endomorphism ring of the canonical module $K(A)$ of the homogeneous coordinate ring $A$ of $X.$ If $X$ is non-normal and is maximally Del Pezzo, that is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay but not arithmetically normal $B$ is just the graded integral closure of $A.$ It turns out, that the geometry of the projection $\tilde {X} \to X$ is governed by the arithmetic depth of $X$ in any case. We study in particular the case in which the projecting variety $\tilde {X} \subset {\mathbb P}^{r + 1}$ is a cone (over a) rational normal scroll. In this case $X$ is contained in a variety of minimal degree $Y \subset {\mathbb P}^r$ such that $\codim_Y(X) = 1$. We use this to approximate the Betti numbers of $X$. In addition we present several examples to illustrate our results and we draw some of the links to Fujita's classification of polarized varieties of $Δ$-genus 1.

On varieties of almost minimal degree in small codimension

The aim of the present exposition is to investigate varieties of almost minimal degree and of low codimension, in particular their Betti diagrams. Here minimal degree is defined as $°X = \codim X + 2.$ We describe the structure of the minimal free resolution of a variety $X$ of almost minimal degree of $\codim X \leq 4$ by listing the possible Betti diagrams. The most surprising fact is, that the non-arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay case of varieties of almost minimal degree can occur only in small dimensions (cf. Section 2 for the precise statements). Our main technical tool is a result shown by the authors (cf. \cite{BS}), which says that besides of an exceptional case, (that is the generic projection of the Veronese surface in $\mathbb P^5_K$) any non-arithmetically normal (and in particular non-arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay) variety of almost minimal degree $X \subset \mathbb P^r_K$ (which is not a cone) is contained in a variety of minimal degree $Y \subset \mathbb P^r_K$ such that $\codim(X,Y) = 1.
