Chirality in Coulomb-blockaded quantum dots

We investigate the two-terminal nonlinear conductance of a Coulomb-blockaded quantum dot attached to chiral edge states. Reversal of the applied magnetic field inverts the system chirality and leads to a different polarization charge. As a result, the current--voltage characteristic is not an even function of the magnetic field. We show that the corresponding magnetic-field asymmetry arises from single-charge effects and vanishes in the limit of high temperature.

Interaction induced magnetic field asymmetry of nonlinear mesoscopic electrical transport

We demonstrate that the nonlinear I-V characteristics of a two probe conductor is not an even function of magnetic field. While the conductance of a two-probe conductor is even in magnetic field, we find that already the contributions to the current which are second order in voltage, are in general not even. This implies a departure from the Onsager microreversibility principle already in the weakly nonlinear regime. Interestingly, the effect that we find is due to the Coulomb interaction. A measurement of the magnetic field asymmetry can be used to determine the effective interaction strength. As a generic example, we discuss the I-V characteristics of a chaotic quantum dot. The ensemble averaged I-V of such a cavity is linear: nonlinearities are due to quantum interference. Consequently, phase-breaking reduces the asymmetry. We support this statement with a calculation which treats inelastic scattering with the help of a voltage probe.

Continuous quantum measurement with independent detector cross-correlations

We investigate the advantages of using two independent, linear detectors for continuous quantum measurement. For single-shot quantum measurement, the measurement is maximally efficient if the detectors are twins. For weak continuous measurement, cross-correlations allow a violation of the Korotkov-Averin bound for the detector's signal-to-noise ratio. A vanishing noise background provides a nontrivial test of ideal independent quantum detectors. We further investigate the correlations of non-commuting operators, and consider possible deviations from the independent detector model for mesoscopic conductors coupled by the screened Coulomb interaction.

Decoherence and Full Counting Statistics in a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer

We investigate the Full Counting Statistics of an electrical Mach-Zehnder interferometer penetrated by an Aharonov-Bohm flux, and in the presence of a classical fluctuating potential. Of interest is the suppression of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the distribution function of the transmitted charge. For a Gaussian fluctuating field we calculate the first three cumulants. The fluctuating potential causes a modulation of the conductance leading in the third cumulant to a term cubic in voltage and to a contribution correlating modulation of current and noise. In the high voltage regime we present an approximation of the generating function.

Entanglement Energetics in the Ground State

We show how many-body ground state entanglement information may be extracted from sub-system energy measurements at zero temperature. A precise relation between entanglement and energy fluctuations is demonstrated in the weak coupling limit. Examples are given with the two-state system and the harmonic oscillator, and energy probability distributions are calculated. Comparisons made with recent qubit experiments show this type of measurement provides another method to quantify entanglement with the environment.

Magnetic-field asymmetry of nonlinear mesoscopic transport

We investigate departures of the Onsager relations in the nonlinear regime of electronic transport through mesoscopic systems. We show that the nonlinear current--voltage characteristic is not an even function of the magnetic field due only to the magnetic-field dependence of the screening potential within the conductor. We illustrate this result for two types of conductors: A quantum Hall bar with an antidot and a chaotic cavity connected to quantum point contacts. For the chaotic cavity we obtain through random matrix theory an asymmetry in the fluctuations of the nonlinear conductance that vanishes rapidly with the size of the contacts.

Quantum Nondemolition Measurement of a Kicked Qubit

We propose a quantum nondemolition measurement using a kicked two-state system (qubit). By tuning the waiting time between kicks to be the qubit oscillation period, the kicking apparatus performs a nondemolition measurement. While dephasing is unavoidable, the nondemolition measurement can (1) slow relaxation of diagonal density matrix elements, (2) avoid detector back-action, and (3) allow for a large signal-to-noise ratio. Deviations from the ideal behavior are studied by allowing for detuning of the waiting time, as well as finite-time, noisy pulses. The scheme is illustrated with a double-dot qubit measured by a gate-pulsed quantum point contact.

Andreev drag effect in ferromagnetic-normal-superconducting systems

We investigate conductances and current correlations in a system consisting of a normal multichannel conductor connected to one superconducting and two ferromagnetic electrodes. For antiparallel orientation of the ferromagnet polarizations, current injection from one ferromagnet can, due to Andreev reflection, lead to a net drag of current from the second ferromagnet toward the superconductor. We present the conditions for the Andreev drag in terms of the degree of lead polarizations, contact conductances and spin-flip scattering. Remarkably, both equilibrium and nonequilibrium zero-frequency current correlations between the ferromagnets become positive even in the presence of spin relaxation.

Entanglement Energetics at Zero Temperature

We show how many-body ground state entanglement information may be extracted from sub-system energy measurements at zero temperature. Generically, the larger the measured energy fluctuations are, the larger the entanglement is. Examples are given with the two-state system and the harmonic oscillator. Comparisons made with recent qubit experiments show this type of measurement provides another method to quantify entanglement with the environment.

Decoherence in ballistic mesoscopic interferometers

We provide a theoretical explanation for two recent experiments on decoherence of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in two- and multi-terminal ballistic rings. We consider decoherence due to charge fluctuations and emphasize the role of charge exchange between the system and the reservoir or nearby gates. A time-dependent scattering matrix approach is shown to be a convenient tool for the discussion of decoherence in ballistic conductors.

Local Friedel sum rule on graphs

We consider graphs made of one-dimensional wires connected at vertices and on which may live a scalar potential. We are interested in a scattering situation where the graph is connected to infinite leads. We investigate relations between the scattering matrix and the continuous part of the local density of states, the injectivities, emissivities and partial local density of states. Those latter quantities can be obtained by attaching an extra lead at the point of interest and by investigating the transport in the limit of zero transmission into the additional lead. In addition to the continuous part related to the scattering states, the spectrum of graphs may present a discrete part related to states that remain uncoupled to the external leads. The theory is illustrated with the help of a few simple examples.

Charge densities and charge noise in mesoscopic conductors

We introduce a hierarchy of density of states to characterize the charge distribution in a mesoscopic conductor. At the bottom of this hierarchy are the partial density of states which represent the contribution to the local density of states if both the incident and the out-going scattering channel is prescribed. The partial density of states play a prominent role in measurements with a scanning tunneling microscope on multiprobe conductors in the presence of current flow. The partial density of states determine the degree of dephasing generated by a weakly coupled voltage probe. In addition the partial density of states determine the frequency-dependent response of mesoscopic conductors in the presence of slowly oscillating voltages applied to the contacts of the sample. The partial density of states permit the formulation of a Friedel sum rule which can be applied locally. We introduce the off-diagonal elements of the partial density of states matrix to describe charge fluctuation processes. This generalization leads to a local Wigner-Smith life-time matrix.

Irreversibility and Dephasing from Vacuum Fluctuations

We investigate the role of vacuum (zero-point) fluctuations in generating decoherence in a number of simple models. First we discuss a harmonic oscillator coupled to a semi-infinite elastic string and discuss the irreversible nature of such a bath. We investigate the fluctuations in energy of the oscillator and discuss the trace the oscillator leaves in the bath. Most of the work deals with two-level systems coupled to a bosonic bath (a transmission line). For two-level systems with a Hamiltonian that commutes with the total Hamiltonian (system plus coupling plus bath) the ground state is a pure state. The energy of the system is a constant of motion. For the general case, the energy of the two-level system fluctuates, and the ground state is only partially coherent. A particular realization of such a two level system consists of a mesoscopic ring with a quantum dot coupled capacitively to a transmission line. In the presence of an Aharonov-Bohm flux this system exhibits a persistent current. This current is a measure of the coherence of the ground state. As a function of the coupling strength the ground state undergoes a crossover from a state characterized by a time-averaged persistent current which is much larger than its time-averaged mean squared fluctuations to a state characterized by a persistent current with an average amplitude that is much smaller than its mean squared fluctuations.

Charge fluctuation induced dephasing in a gated mesoscopic interferometer

The reduction of the amplitude of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in a ballistic one-channel mesoscopic interferometer due to charge fluctuations is investigated. In the arrangement considered the interferometer has four terminals and is coupled to macroscopic metallic side-gates. The Aharonov-Bohm oscillation amplitude is calculated as a function of temperature and the strength of coupling between the ring and the side-gates. The resulting dephasing rate is linear in temperature in agreement with recent experiments. Our derivation emphasizes the relationship between dephasing, ac-transport and charge fluctuations.

Decoherence from Vacuum Fluctuations

Vacuum fluctuations are a source of irreversibility and decoherence. We investigate the persistent current and its fluctuations in a ring with an in-line quantum dot with an Aharonov-Bohm flux through the hole of the ring. The Coulomb blockade leads to persistent current peaks at values of the gate voltage at which two charge states of the dot have the same free energy. We couple the structure to an external circuit and investigate the effect of the zero-temperature (vacuum fluctuations) on the ground state of the ring. We find that the ground state of the ring undergoes a crossover from a state with an average persistent current much larger than the (time-dependent) mean squared fluctuations to a state with a small average persistent current and large mean squared fluctuations. We discuss the spectral density of charge fluctuations and discuss diffusion rates for angle variables characterizing the ground state in Bloch representation.

Capacitance, Charge Fluctuations and Dephasing In Coulomb Coupled Conductors

The charge fluctuations of two nearby mesoscopic conductors coupled only via the long range Coulomb force are discussed and used to find the dephasing rate which one conductor exerts on the other. The discussion is based on a formulation of the scattering approach for charge densities and the density response to a fluctuating potential. Coupling to the Poisson equation results in an electrically self-consistent description of charge fluctuations. At equilibrium the low-frequency noise power can be expressed with the help of a charge relaxation resistance (which together with the capacitance determines the RC-time of the structure). In the presence of transport the low frequency charge noise power is determined by a resistance which reflects the presence of shot noise. We use these results to derive expressions for the dephasing rates of Coulomb coupled conductors and to find a self-consistent expression for the measurement time.

Quantum Coherence of the Ground State of a Mesoscopic Ring

We discuss the phase coherence properties of a mesoscopic normal ring coupled to an electric environment via Coulomb interactions. This system can be mapped onto the Caldeira-Leggett model with a flux dependent tunneling amplitude. We show that depending on the strength of the coupling between the ring and the environment the free energy can be obtained either by a Bethe ansatz approch (for weak coupling) or by using a perturbative expression which we derive here (in the case of strong coupling). We demonstrate that the zero-point fluctuations of the environment can strongly suppress the persistent current of the ring below its value in the absence of the environment. This is an indication that the equilibrium fluctuations in the environment disturb the coherence of the wave functions in the ring. Moreover the influence of quantum fluctuations can induce symmetry breaking seen in the polarization of the ring and in the flux induced capacitance.

Zero-point fluctuations in the ground state of a mesoscopic normal ring

We investigate the persistent current of a ring with an in-line quantum dot capacitively coupled to an external circuit. Of special interest is the magnitude of the persistent current as a function of the external impedance in the zero temperature limit when the only fluctuations in the external circuit are zero-point fluctuations. These are time-dependent fluctuations which polarize the ring-dot structure and we discuss in detail the contribution of displacement currents to the persistent current. We have earlier discussed an exact solution for the persistent current and its fluctuations based on a Bethe ansatz. In this work, we emphasize a physically more intuitive approach using a Langevin description of the external circuit. This approach is limited to weak coupling between the ring and the external circuit. We show that the zero temperature persistent current obtained in this approach is consistent with the persistent current calculated from a Bethe ansatz solution. In the absence of coupling our system is a two level system consisting of the ground state and the first excited state. In the presence of coupling we investigate the projection of the actual state on the ground state and the first exited state of the decoupled ring. With each of these projections we can associate a phase diffusion time. In the zero temperature limit we find that the phase diffusion time of the excited state projection saturates, whereas the phase diffusion time of the ground state projection diverges.
