On the Swampland Cobordism Conjecture and Non-Abelian Duality Groups

We study the cobordism conjecture of McNamara and Vafa which asserts that the bordism group of quantum gravity is trivial. In the context of type IIB string theory compactified on a circle, this predicts the presence of D7-branes. On the other hand, the non-Abelian structure of the IIB duality group $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ implies the existence of additional $[p,q]$ 7-branes. We find that this additional information is instead captured by the space of closed paths on the moduli space of elliptic curves parameterizing distinct values of the type IIB axio-dilaton. This description allows to recover the full structure of non-Abelian braid statistics for 7-branes. Combining the cobordism conjecture with an earlier Swampland conjecture by Ooguri and Vafa, we argue that only certain congruence subgroups $Γ\subset SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ specifying genus zero modular curves can appear in 8D F-theory vacua. This leads to a successful prediction for the allowed Mordell-Weil torsion groups for 8D F-theory vacua.

String Universality and Non-Simply-Connected Gauge Groups in 8d

We present a consistency condition for 8d ${\cal N} = 1$ supergravity theories with non-trivial global structure $G/Z$ for the non-Abelian gauge group, based on an anomaly involving the $Z$ 1-form center symmetry. The interplay with other Swampland criteria identifies the majority of 8d theories with gauge group $G/Z$, which have no string theory realization, as inconsistent quantum theories when coupled to gravity. While this condition is equivalent to geometric properties of elliptic K3 surfaces in F-theory compactifications, it constrains the unexplored landscape of gauge groups in other 8d string models.

Geometric Approach to 3D Interfaces at Strong Coupling

We study 4D systems in which parameters of the theory have position dependence in one spatial direction. In the limit where these parameters jump, this can lead to 3D interfaces supporting localized degrees of freedom. A priori, this sort of position dependence can occur at either weak or strong coupling. Demanding time-reversal invariance for $U(1)$ gauge theories with a duality group $Γ\subset SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ leads to interfaces at strong coupling which are characterized by the real component of a modular curve specified by $Γ$. This provides a geometric method for extracting the electric and magnetic charges of possible localized states. We illustrate these general considerations by analyzing some 4D $\mathcal{N} = 2$ theories with 3D interfaces. These 4D systems can also be interpreted as descending from a six-dimensional theory compactified on a three-manifold generated by a family of Riemann surfaces fibered over the real line. We show more generally that 6D superconformal field theories compactified on such spaces also produce trapped matter by using the known structure of anomalies in the resulting 4D bulk theories.

Non-Simply-Connected Symmetries in 6D SCFTs

Six-dimensional N=(1,0) superconformal field theories can be engineered geometrically via F-theory on elliptically-fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We include torsional sections in the geometry, which lead to a finite Mordell-Weil group. This allows us to identify the full non-Abelian group structure rather than just the algebra. The presence of torsion also modifies the center of the symmetry groups and the matter representations that can appear. This in turn affects the tensor branch of these theories. We analyze this change for a large class of superconformal theories with torsion and explicitly construct their tensor branches. Finally, we elaborate on the connection to the dual heterotic and M-theory description, in which our configurations are interpreted as generalizations of discrete holonomy instantons.

Entropy Constraints on High Spin Particles

Elementary particles of large spin $s$ store quantum information in degenerate states and therefore are subject to the Bekenstein entropy bound. We observe that for sufficiently large $s$ the bound is violated unless the particle acquires a new associated length-scale different from its Compton wavelength. This can be regarded as a glimpse of stringiness. Moreover, this bound is independent of gravity. The inclusion of gravity additionally generates a new scale at which the thermality of the black hole radiation is violated by the emission of a high spin particle. This bound can be understood as the black hole species bound, i.e. an induced quantum gravity cutoff-scale given by $M_P/\sqrt{s}$. The two bounds carry qualitatively different information.

Magnetized orbifolds and localized flux

Magnetized orbifolds play an important role in compactifications of string theories and higher-dimensional field theories to four dimensions. Magnetic flux leads to chiral fermions, it can be a source of supersymmetry breaking and it is an important ingredient of moduli stabilization. Flux quantization on orbifolds is subtle due to the orbifold singularities. Generically, Wilson line integrals around these singularities are non-trivial, which can be interpreted as localized flux. As a consequence, flux densities on orbifolds can take the same values as on tori. We determine the transition functions for the flux vector bundle on the orbifold $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_2$ and the related twisted boundary conditions of zero-mode wave functions. We also construct "untwisted" zero-mode functions that are obtained for singular vector fields related to the Green's function on a torus, and we discuss the connection between zeros of the wave functions and localized flux. Twisted and untwisted zero-mode functions are related by a singular gauge transformation.

Flux compactifications and naturalness

Free massless scalars have a shift symmetry. This is usually broken by gauge and Yukawa interactions, such that quantum corrections induce a quadratically divergent mass term. In the Standard Model this leads to the hierarchy problem of the electroweak theory, the question why the Higgs mass is so much smaller than the Planck mass. We present an example where a large scalar mass term is avoided by coupling the scalar to an infinite tower of massive states which are obtained from a six-dimensional theory compactified on a torus with magnetic flux. The series of divergent quantum corrections adds up to zero, and we show explicitly that the shift symmetry of the scalar is preserved in the effective four-dimensional theory despite the presence of gauge and Yukawa interaction terms.

Global tensor-matter transitions in F-theory

We use F-theory to study gauge algebra preserving transitions of 6d supergravity theories that are connected by superconformal points. While the vector multiplets remain unchanged, the hyper- and tensor multiplet sectors are modified. In 6d F-theory models, these transitions are realized by tuning the intersection points of two curves, one of them carrying a non-Abelian gauge algebra, to a (4,6,12) singularity, followed by a resolution in the base. The six-dimensional supergravity anomaly constraints are strong enough to completely fix the possible non-Abelian representations and to restrict the Abelian charges in the hypermultiplet sector affected by the transition, as we demonstrate for all Lie algebras and their representations. Furthermore, we present several examples of such transitions in torically resolved fibrations. In these smooth models, superconformal points lead to non-flat fibers which correspond to non-toric Kähler deformations of the torus-fibered Calabi-Yau 3-fold geometry.

The Toric SO(10) F-Theory Landscape

Supergravity theories in more than four dimensions with grand unified gauge symmetries are an important intermediate step towards the ultraviolet completion of the Standard Model in string theory. Using toric geometry, we classify and analyze six-dimensional F-theory vacua with gauge group SO(10) taking into account Mordell-Weil U(1) and discrete gauge factors. We determine the full matter spectrum of these models, including charged and neutral SO(10) singlets. Based solely on the geometry, we compute all matter multiplicities and confirm the cancellation of gauge and gravitational anomalies independent of the base space. Particular emphasis is put on symmetry enhancements at the loci of matter fields and to the frequent appearance of superconformal points. They are linked to non-toric Kähler deformations which contribute to the counting of degrees of freedom. We compute the anomaly coefficients for these theories as well by using a base-independent blow-up procedure and superconformal matter transitions. Finally, we identify six-dimensional supergravity models which can yield the Standard Model with high-scale supersymmetry by further compactification to four dimensions in an Abelian flux background.

Effective field theory for magnetic compactifications

Magnetic flux plays an important role in compactifications of field and string theories in two ways, it generates a multiplicity of chiral fermion zero modes and it can break supersymmetry. We derive the complete four-dimensional effective action for N=1 supersymmetric Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories in six dimensions compactified on a torus with flux. The effective action contains the tower of charged states and it accounts for the mass spectrum of bosonic and fermionic fields as well as their level-dependent interactions. This allows us to compute quantum corrections to the mass and couplings of Wilson lines. We find that the one-loop corrections vanish, contrary to the case without flux. This can be traced back to the spontaneous breaking of a symmetry of the six-dimensional theory by the background gauge field, with the Wilson line as Goldstone boson.

de Sitter vacua and supersymmetry breaking in six-dimensional flux compactifications

We consider six-dimensional supergravity with Abelian bulk flux compactified on an orbifold. The effective low-energy action can be expressed in terms of N=1 chiral moduli superfields with a gauged shift symmetry. The D-term potential contains two Fayet-Iliopoulos terms which are induced by the flux and by the Green-Schwarz term canceling the gauge anomalies, respectively. The Green-Schwarz term also leads to a correction of the gauge kinetic function which turns out to be crucial for the existence of Minkowski and de Sitter vacua. Moduli stabilization is achieved by the interplay of the D-term and a nonperturbative superpotential. Varying the gauge coupling and the superpotential parameters, the scale of the extra dimensions can range from the GUT scale down to the TeV scale. Supersymmetry is broken by F- and D-terms, and the scale of gravitino, moduli, and modulini masses is determined by the size of the compact dimensions.

de Sitter vacua from an anomalous gauge symmetry

We find a new class of metastable de Sitter solutions in compactifications of six-dimensional supergravity motivated by type IIB or heterotic string vacua. Two Fayet-Iliopoulos terms of a local U(1) symmetry are generated by magnetic flux and by the Green-Schwarz term canceling the gauge anomalies, respectively. The interplay between the induced D-term, the moduli dependence of the effective gauge coupling, and a nonperturbative superpotential stabilizes the moduli and determines the size of the extra dimensions.

Chiral fermions and anomaly cancellation on orbifolds with Wilson lines and flux

We consider six-dimensional supergravity compactified on orbifolds with Wilson lines and bulk flux. Torus Wilson lines are decomposed into Wilson lines around the orbifold fixed points, and twisted boundary conditions of matter fields are related to fractional localized flux. Both, orbifold singularities and flux lead to chiral fermions in four dimensions. We show that in addition to the standard bulk and fixed point anomalies the Green-Schwarz term also cancels the four-dimensional anomaly induced by the flux background. The two axions contained in the antisymmetric tensor field both contribute to the cancellation of the four-dimensional anomaly and the generation of a vector boson mass via the Stueckelberg mechanism. An orthogonal linear combination of the axions remains massless and couples to the gauge field in the standard way. Furthermore, we construct convenient expressions for the wave functions of the zero modes and relate their multiplicity and behavior at the fixed points to the bulk flux quanta and the Wilson lines.

Split symmetries

We consider six-dimensional supergravity with gauge group $SO(10)\times U(1)_A$, compactified on the orbifold $T^2 / \mathbb{Z}_2$. Three quark-lepton generations arise as zero modes of a bulk $\bf16$-plet due to magnetic flux of the anomalous $U(1)_A$. Boundary conditions at the four fixed points break $SO(10)$ to subgroups whose intersection is the Standard Model gauge group. The gauge and Higgs sector consist of "split" $SO(10)$ multiplets. As consequence of the $U(1)_A$ flux, squarks and sleptons are much heavier than gauge bosons, Higgs bosons, gauginos and higgsinos. We thus obtain a picture similar to "split supersymmetry." The flavor structure of the quark and lepton mass matrices is determined by the symmetry breaking at the orbifold fixed points.

Topological Model for Domain Walls in (Super-)Yang-Mills Theories

We derive a topological action that describes the confining phase of (Super-)Yang-Mills theories with gauge group $SU(N)$, similar to the work recently carried out by Seiberg and collaborators. It encodes all the Aharonov-Bohm phases of the possible non-local operators and phases generated by the intersection of flux tubes. Within this topological framework we show that the worldvolume theory of domain walls contains a Chern-Simons term at level $N$ also seen in string theory constructions. The discussion can also illuminate dynamical differences of domain walls in the supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric framework. Two further analogies, to string theory and the fractional quantum Hall effect might lead to additional possibilities to investigate the dynamics.
