Extremal Determinants of Laplace-Beltrami Operators for Rectangular Tori

In this work we study the determinant of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on rectangular tori of unit area. We will see that the square torus gives the extremal determinant within this class of tori. The result is established by studying properties of the Dedekind eta function for special arguments and refined logarithmic convexity and concavity results of the classical Jacobi theta functions of one real variable are deeply involved.

On the Parity under Metapletic Operators and an Extension of a Result of Lyubarskii and Nes

In this work we show that if the frame property of a Gabor frame with window in Feichtinger's algebra and a fixed lattice only depends on the parity of the window, then the lattice can be replaced by any other lattice of the same density without losing the frame property. As a byproduct we derive a generalization of a result of Lyubarskii and Nes, who could show that any Gabor system consisting of an odd window function from Feichtinger's algebra and any separable lattice of density $\frac{n+1}{n}$, $n \in \mathbb{N}_+$, cannot be a Gabor frame for the Hilbert space of square-integrable functions on the real line. We extend this result by removing the assumption that the lattice has to be separable. This is achieved by exploiting the interplay between the symplectic and the metaplectic group.

An Application of Hypergeometric Functions to Heat Kernels on Rectangular and Hexagonal Tori and a "Weltkonstante" -- Or -- How Ramanujan Split Temperatures

In this work we investigate the heat kernel of the Laplace--Beltrami operator on a rectangular torus and the according temperature distribution. We compute the minimum and the maximum of the temperature on rectangular tori of fixed area by means of Gauss' hypergeometric function $_2F_1$ and the elliptic modulus. In order to be able to do this, we employ a beautiful result of Ramanujan, connecting hypergeometric functions, the elliptic modulus and theta functions. Also, we investigate the temperature distribution of the heat kernel on hexagonal tori and use Ramanujan's corresponding theory of signature 3 to derive analogous results to the rectangular case. Lastly, we show connections to the problem of finding the exact value of Landau's "Weltkonstante", a universal constant arising in the theory of extremal holomorphic mappings; and for a related, restricted extremal problem we show that the conjectured solution is the second lemniscate constant.

The Strohmer and Beaver Conjecture for Gaussian Gabor Systems - A Deep Mathematical Problem (?)

In this article we are going to discuss the conjecture of Strohmer and Beaver for Gaussian Gabor systems. It asks for an optimal sampling pattern in the time-frequency plane, where optimality is measured in terms of the condition number of the frame operator. From a heuristic point of view, it seems obvious that a hexagonal (sometimes called triangular) lattice should yield the solution. The conjecture is now open for 16 years and only recently partial progress has been made. One point this article aims to make, is to show up parallels to a long standing, open problem from geometric function theory, Landau's problem posed in 1929, suggesting that the conjecture of Strohmer and Beaver is a very deep mathematical problem.

An Extremal Property of the Hexagonal Lattice

We describe an extremal property of the hexagonal lattice $Λ\subset \mathbb{R}^2$. Let $p$ denote the circumcenter of its fundamental triangle (a so-called deep hole) and let $A_r$ denote the set of lattice points that are at distance $r$ from $p$ \begin{equation} A_r = \left\{ λ\in Λ: \| λ- p \| = r\right\}. \end{equation} If $Γ$ is a small perturbation of $Λ$ in the space of lattices with fixed density and $C_r$ denotes the set of points in $A_r$ shifted to the new lattice, then \begin{equation} \sum_{μ\in C_r}{ \| p - μ\|} - \sum_{λ\in A_r}{ \| p - λ\|} \gtrsim r \, |A_r| \, d(Λ, Γ)^2, \end{equation} where $d(Λ, Γ)$ denotes the distance between the lattices: the hexagonal lattice has the property that `far away points are closer than they are for nearby lattices'. This has implications in the calculus of variations: assume \begin{equation} g_Γ(z) = \sum_{γ\in Γ} f( \|z - γ\|) \quad \mbox{ satisfies } \quad \min_{z \in \mathbb{R}^2} g_Λ(z) = g_Λ(p). \end{equation} For a certain class of compactly supported functions $f$, the hexagonal lattice $Λ$ is then a strict local maximizer of \begin{equation} \max_Γ \min_{z \in \mathbb{R}^2} \sum_{γ\in Γ}{f( \|z - γ\| )}, \end{equation} where the maximum runs over all lattices of fixed density.

Gaussian Distributions and Phase Space Weyl--Heisenberg Frames

Gaussian states are at the heart of quantum mechanics and play an essential role in quantum information processing. In this paper we provide approximation formulas for the expansion of a general Gaussian symbol in terms of elementary Gaussian functions. For this purpose we introduce the notion of a "phase space frame" associated with a Weyl-Heisenberg frame. Our results give explicit formulas for approximating general Gaussian symbols in phase space by phase space shifted standard Gaussians as well as explicit error estimates and the asymptotic behavior of the approximation.

A Short Note on the Frame Set of Odd Functions

In this work we derive a simple argument which shows that Gabor systems consisting of odd functions of $d$ variables and symplectic lattices of density $2^d$ cannot constitute a Gabor frame. In the 1--dimensional, separable case, this is a special case of a result proved by Lyubarskii and Nes, however, we use a different approach in this work exploiting the algebraic relation between the ambiguity function and the Wigner distribution as well as their relation given by the (symplectic) Fourier transform. Also, we do not need the assumption that the lattice is separable and, hence, new restrictions are added to the full frame set of odd functions.

Multi-Window Weaving Frames

In this work we deal with the recently introduced concept of weaving frames. We extend the concept to include multi-window frames and present the first sufficient criteria for a family of multi-window Gabor frames to be woven. We give a Hilbert space norm criterion and a pointwise criterion in phase space. The key ingredient are localization operators in phase space and we give examples of woven multi-window Gabor frames consisting of Hermite functions.

Minimal Operator Norms via Minimal Theta Functions

We investigate sharp frame bounds of Gabor frames with chirped Gaussians and rectangular lattices or, equivalently, the case of the standard Gaussian and general lattices. We prove that for even redundancy and standard Gaussian window the hexagonal lattice minimizes the upper frame bound using a result by Montgomery on minimal theta functions.

Optimal Gabor frame bounds for separable lattices and estimates for Jacobi theta functions

We study sharp frame bounds of Gabor frames with the standard Gaussian window and prove that the square lattice optimizes both the lower and the upper frame bound among all rectangular lattices. This proves a conjecture of Floch, Alard & Berrou (as reformulated by Strohmer & Beaver). The proof is based on refined log-convexity/concavity estimates for the Jacobi theta functions $θ_3$ and $θ_4$.

Gabor Frame Sets of Invariance - A Hamiltonian Approach to Gabor Frame Deformations

In this work we study families of pairs of window functions and lattices which lead to Gabor frames which all possess the same frame bounds. To be more precise, for every generalized Gaussian $g$, we will construct an uncountable family of lattices $\lbrace Λ_τ\rbrace$ such that each pairing of $g$ with some $Λ_τ$ yields a Gabor frame, and all pairings yield the same frame bounds. On the other hand, for each lattice we will find a countable family of generalized Gaussians $\lbrace g_i \rbrace$ such that each pairing leaves the frame bounds invariant. Therefore, we are tempted to speak about "Gabor Frame Sets of Invariance".
