Local stability of Kolmogorov forward equations for finite state nonlinear Markov processes

The focus of this work is on local stability of a class of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODE) that describe limits of empirical measures associated with finite-state weakly interacting N-particle systems. Local Lyapunov functions are identified for several classes of such ODE, including those associated with systems with slow adaptation and Gibbs systems. Using results from [5] and large deviations heuristics, a partial differential equation (PDE) associated with the nonlinear ODE is introduced and it is shown that positive definite subsolutions of this PDE serve as local Lyapunov functions for the ODE. This PDE characterization is used to construct explicit Lyapunov functions for a broad class of models called locally Gibbs systems. This class of models is significantly larger than the family of Gibbs systems and several examples of such systems are presented, including models with nearest neighbor jumps and models with simultaneous jumps that arise in applications.

On large deviations for small noise Itô processes

The large deviation principle in the small noise limit is derived for solutions of possibly degenerate Itô stochastic differential equations with predictable coefficients, which may depend also on the large deviation parameter. The result is established under mild assumptions using the Dupuis-Ellis weak convergence approach. Applications to certain systems with memory and to positive diffusions with square-root-like dispersion coefficient are included.

On the form of the large deviation rate function for the empirical measures of weakly interacting systems

A basic result of large deviations theory is Sanov's theorem, which states that the sequence of empirical measures of independent and identically distributed samples satisfies the large deviation principle with rate function given by relative entropy with respect to the common distribution. Large deviation principles for the empirical measures are also known to hold for broad classes of weakly interacting systems. When the interaction through the empirical measure corresponds to an absolutely continuous change of measure, the rate function can be expressed as relative entropy of a distribution with respect to the law of the McKean-Vlasov limit with measure-variable frozen at that distribution. We discuss situations, beyond that of tilted distributions, in which a large deviation principle holds with rate function in relative entropy form.

Time to absorption for a heterogeneous neutral competition model

Neutral models aspire to explain biodiversity patterns in ecosystems where species difference can be neglected, as it might occur at a specific trophic level, and perfect symmetry is assumed between species. Voter-like models capture the essential ingredients of the neutral hypothesis and represent a paradigm for other disciplines like social studies and chemical reactions. In a system where each individual can interact with all the other members of the community, the typical time to reach an absorbing state with a single species scales linearly with the community size. Here we show, by using a rigorous approach within a large deviation principle and confirming previous approximate and numerical results, that in a heterogeneous voter model the typical time to reach an absorbing state scales exponentially with the system size, suggestive of an asymptotic active phase.

A Curie-Weiss model with dissipation

We consider stochastic dynamics for a spin system with mean field interaction, in which the interaction potential is subject to noisy and dissipative stochastic evolution. We show that, in the thermodynamic limit and at sufficiently low temperature, the magnetization of the system has a time periodic behavior, despite of the fact that no periodic force is applied.

Large deviation properties of weakly interacting processes via weak convergence methods

We study large deviation properties of systems of weakly interacting particles modeled by Itô stochastic differential equations (SDEs). It is known under certain conditions that the corresponding sequence of empirical measures converges, as the number of particles tends to infinity, to the weak solution of an associated McKean-Vlasov equation. We derive a large deviation principle via the weak convergence approach. The proof, which avoids discretization arguments, is based on a representation theorem, weak convergence and ideas from stochastic optimal control. The method works under rather mild assumptions and also for models described by SDEs not of diffusion type. To illustrate this, we treat the case of SDEs with delay.

Discretisation of stochastic control problems for continuous time dynamics with delay

As a main step in the numerical solution of control problems in continuous time, the controlled process is approximated by sequences of controlled Markov chains, thus discretising time and space. A new feature in this context is to allow for delay in the dynamics. The existence of an optimal strategy with respect to the cost functional can be guaranteed in the class of relaxed controls. Weak convergence of the approximating extended Markov chains to the original process together with convergence of the associated optimal strategies is established.
