The universal property of bordism of commuting involutions

We propose a formalism to capture the structure of the equivariant bordism rings of smooth manifolds with commuting involutions. We introduce the concept of an oriented el$_2^{RO}$-algebra, an algebraic structure featuring representation graded rings for all elementary abelian 2-groups, connected by restriction homomorphisms, a pre-Euler class, and an inverse Thom class; this data is subject to one exactness property. Besides equivariant bordism, oriented global ring spectra also give rise to oriented el$_2^{RO}$-algebras, so examples abound. Inverting the inverse Thom classes yields a global 2-torsion group law. In this sense, our oriented el$_2^{RO}$-algebras are delocalized generalizations of global 2-torsion group laws. Our main result shows that equivariant bordism for elementary abelian 2-groups is an initial oriented el$_2^{RO}$-algebra. Several other interesting equivariant homology theories can also be characterized, on elementary abelian 2-groups, by similar universal properties. We prove that stable equivariant bordism is an initial el$_2^{RO}$-algebra with an invertible orientation; that Bredon homology with constant mod 2 coefficients is an initial el$_2^{RO}$-algebra with an additive orientation; and that Borel equivariant homology with mod 2 coefficients is an initial el$_2^{RO}$-algebra with an orientation that is both additive and invertible.

Representation-graded Bredon homology of elementary abelian 2-groups

We calculate the representation-graded Bredon homology rings of all elementary abelian 2-groups with coefficients in the constant mod-2 Mackey functor. We exhibit minimal presentations for these rings as quotients of the polynomial algebra on the pre-Euler and inverse Thom classes of all nontrivial characters, subject to an explicit finite list of relations arising from orientability properties. Two corollaries of our presentation are the calculation, originally due to Holler and Kriz, of the geometric fixed point rings, and a strengthening of a calculation of Balmer and Gallauer of the localized twisted cohomology ring.

Invariant prime ideals in equivariant Lazard rings

Let $A$ be an abelian compact Lie group. In this paper we compute the spectrum of invariant prime ideals of the $A$-equivariant Lazard ring, or equivalently the spectrum of points of the moduli stack of $A$-equivariant formal groups. We further show that this spectrum is homeomorphic to the Balmer spectrum of compact $A$-spectra, with the comparison map induced by equivariant complex bordism homology.

Global group laws and equivariant bordism rings

For every abelian compact Lie group A, we prove that the homotopical A-equivariant complex bordism ring, introduced by tom Dieck (1970), is isomorphic to the A-equivariant Lazard ring, introduced by Cole-Greenlees-Kriz (2000). This settles a conjecture of Greenlees. We also show an analog for homotopical real bordism rings over elementary abelian 2-groups. Our results generalize classical theorems of Quillen (1969) on the connection between non-equivariant bordism rings and formal group laws, and extend the case $A = C_2$ due to Hanke-Wiemeler (2018). We work in the framework of global homotopy theory, which is essential for our proof. In addition to the statements for a fixed group A, we also prove a global algebraic universal property that characterizes the collection of all equivariant complex bordism rings simultaneously. We show that they form the universal contravariant functor from abelian compact Lie groups to commutative rings that is equipped with a coordinate; the coordinate is given by the universal Euler class at the circle group. More generally, the ring of n-fold cooperations of equivariant complex bordism is shown to be universal among functors equipped with a strict n-tuple of coordinates.

Proper equivariant stable homotopy theory

This monograph introduces a framework for genuine proper equivariant stable homotopy theory for Lie groups. The adjective `proper' alludes to the feature that equivalences are tested on compact subgroups, and that the objects are built from equivariant cells with compact isotropy groups; the adjective `genuine' indicates that the theory comes with appropriate transfers and Wirthm\"uller isomorphisms, and the resulting equivariant cohomology theories support the analog of an $RO(G)$-grading. Our model for genuine proper $G$-equivariant stable homotopy theory is the category of orthogonal $G$-spectra; the equivalences are those morphisms that induce isomorphisms of equivariant stable homotopy groups for all compact subgroups of $G$. This class of $\pi_*$-isomorphisms is part of a symmetric monoidal stable model structure and the associated tensor triangulated homotopy category is compactly generated. Every orthogonal $G$-spectrum represents an equivariant cohomology theory on the category of $G$-spaces, depending only on the `proper $G$-homotopy type', tested by fixed points under all compact subgroups. An important special case are infinite discrete groups. For these, our genuine equivariant theory is related to finiteness properties, in the sense of geometric group theory; for example, the $G$-sphere spectrum is a compact object in the equivariant homotopy category if the universal space for proper $G$-actions has a finite $G$-CW-model. For discrete groups, the represented equivariant cohomology theories on finite proper $G$-CW-complexes admit a more explicit description in terms of parameterized equivariant homotopy theory, suitably stabilized by $G$-vector bundles. Via this description, we can identify the previously defined $G$-cohomology theories of equivariant stable cohomotopy and equivariant K-theory as cohomology theories represented by specific orthogonal $G$-spectra.

On the Balmer spectrum for compact Lie groups

We study the Balmer spectrum of the category of finite G-spectra for a compact Lie group G, extending the work for finite G by Strickland, Balmer-Sanders, Barthel-Hausmann-Naumann-Nikolaus-Noel-Stapleton and others. We give a description of the underlying set of the spectrum and show that the Balmer topology is completely determined by the inclusions between the prime ideals and the topology on the space of closed subgroups of G. Using this, we obtain a complete description of this topology for all abelian compact Lie groups and consequently a complete classification of thick tensor-ideals. For general compact Lie groups we obtain such a classification away from a finite set of primes p.

Commuting matrices and Atiyah's Real K-theory

We describe the $C_2$-equivariant homotopy type of the space of commuting n-tuples in the stable unitary group in terms of Real K-theory. The result is used to give a complete calculation of the homotopy groups of the space of commuting n-tuples in the stable orthogonal group, as well as of the coefficient ring for commutative orthogonal K-theory.

G-symmetric spectra, semistability and the multiplicative norm

In this paper we develop the basic homotopy theory of G-symmetric spectra (that is, symmetric spectra with a G-action) for a finite group G, as a model for equivariant stable homotopy with respect to a G-set universe. This model lies in between Mandell's equivariant symmetric spectra and the G-orthogonal spectra of Mandell and May and is Quillen equivalent to the two. We further discuss equivariant semistability, construct model structures on module, algebra and commutative algebra categories and describe the homotopical properties of the multiplicative norm in this context.

Symmetric products and subgroup lattices

Let G be a finite group. We show that the rational homotopy groups of symmetric products of the G-equivariant sphere spectrum are naturally isomorphic to the rational homology groups of certain subcomplexes of the subgroup lattice of G.

The Balmer spectrum of the equivariant homotopy category of a finite abelian group

For a finite abelian group $A$, we determine the Balmer spectrum of $\mathrm{Sp}_A^{\omega}$, the compact objects in genuine $A$-spectra. This generalizes the case $A=\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ due to Balmer and Sanders \cite{Balmer-Sanders}, by establishing (a corrected version of) their log$_p$-conjecture for abelian groups. We also work out the consequences for the chromatic type of fixed-points and establish a generalization of Kuhn's blue-shift theorem for Tate-constructions \cite{kuhn}.

Filtrations of global equivariant K-theory

Arone and Lesh constructed and studied spectrum level filtrations that interpolate between connective (topological or algebraic) K-theory and the Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum for the integers. In this paper we consider (global) equivariant generalizations of these filtrations and of another closely related class of filtrations, the modified rank filtrations of the K-theory spectra themselves. We lift Arone and Lesh's description of the filtration subquotients to the equivariant context and apply it to compute algebraic filtrations on representation rings that arise on equivariant homotopy groups. It turns out that these representation ring filtrations are considerably easier to express globally than over a fixed compact Lie group. Furthermore, they have formal similarities to the filtration on Burnside rings induced by the symmetric products of spheres, which was computed by Schwede.
