Exploring the Tan contact term in Yang-Mills theory

Reliably computing the free energy in a gauge theory like QCD is a challenging and resource-demanding endeavor. As an alternative, we explore here the possibility to obtain the associated thermodynamic anomaly by exploiting its relation to the Tan contact. Optimally, this would reduce the determination of the free energy to a high-precision calculation of two-point correlators. We study this possibility using the lattice and functional methods and compare them to the expected behavior for the SU(2) Yang-Mills case.

On the quark-gluon vertex at non-vanishing temperature

We perform a semi-perturbative calculation of the quark-gluon vertex inspired from the three-loop expanded 3PI effective action and investigate the relative strengths of the chirally symmetric/broken tensor structures below and above the crossover.

Phase structure and propagators at nonvanishing temperature for QCD and QCD-like theories

We investigate the universality of truncation schemes for Dyson-Schwinger equations developed for quantum chromodynamics in theories which differ from quantum chromodynamics only in the gauge group. Our specific choices are the gauge groups $SU(2)$ and $G_2$, for which lattice calculations at nonvanishing chemical potential are possible. Thus, corresponding calculations can provide benchmarks for testing calculations with functional equations. We calculate the quark and gluon propagators and determine the chiral and dual chiral condensates at vanishing density to determine the confinement/deconfinement and chiral transitions, respectively. We can reproduce the expected type of transitions in the quenched and unquenched cases. In general, all three theories react very similarly to modifications of the employed model for the quark-gluon vertex.

On non-primitively divergent vertices of Yang-Mills theory

Two correlation functions of Yang-Mills beyond the primitively divergent ones, the two-ghost-two-gluon and the four-ghost vertices, are calculated and their influence on lower vertices is examined. Their full (transverse) tensor structure is taken into account. As input, a solution of the full two-point equations - including two-loop terms - is used that respects the resummed perturbative ultraviolet behavior. A clear hierarchy is found with regard to the color structure that reduces the number of relevant dressing functions. The impact of the two-ghost-two-gluon vertex on the three-gluon vertex is negligible, which is explained by the fact that all non-small dressing functions drop out due to their color factors. Only in the ghost-gluon vertex a small net effect below $2\%$ is seen. The four-ghost vertex is found to be extremely small in general. Since these two four-point functions do not enter into the propagator equations, these findings establish their small overall effect on lower correlation functions.

The quark propagators of QCD and QCD-like theories

We investigate the phase structures of theories which differ from QCD only in the gauge group and can be simulated on the lattice at non-vanishing chemical potential $μ$. These theories can thus serve as testing ground for functional methods at non-vanishing density. We determine the chiral and confinement/deconfinement transitions at $μ=0$ for the three gauge groups $SU(3)$, $SU(2)$ and $G_2$ for two quark flavors and extend the study of the chiral transition to non-zero $μ$. We locate the critical point where the chiral crossover becomes a real phase transition. Within the employed truncation, we find that all three theories behave qualitatively very similarly.

The quark propagator in QCD and $G_2$ QCD

QCD-like theories provide testing grounds for truncations of functional equations at non-zero density, since comparisons with lattice results are possible due to the absence of the sign problem. As a first step towards such a comparison, we determine for QCD and $G_2$ QCD the chiral and confinement/deconfinement transitions from the quark propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation at zero chemical potential by calculating the chiral and dual chiral condensates, respectively.

An exploratory study of Yang-Mills three-point functions at non-zero temperature

Results for three-point functions of Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory at non-vanishing temperature are presented and compared to lattice results. It is found that the three-gluon vertex is enhanced for temperatures below the phase transition. At very low momenta it becomes negative for all temperatures. Furthermore, truncation effects in functional equations are discussed at the example of three-dimensional Yang-Mills theory for which a self-contained solution is presented.

Three-point vertex functions in Yang-Mills Theory and QCD in Landau gauge

Solutions for the three-gluon and quark-gluon vertices from Dyson-Schwinger equations and the three-particle irreducible formalism are discussed. Dynamical quarks (``unquenching'') change the three-gluon vertex via the quark-triangle diagrams which themselves include fully dressed quark-gluon vertex functions. On the other hand, the quark-swordfish diagram is, at least with the model used for the two-quark-two-gluon vertex employed here, of minor importance. For the leading tensor structure of the three-gluon vertex the "unquenching" effect can be summarized for the nonperturbative part as a shift of the related dressing function towards the infrared.

Dyson--Schwinger Approach to Hamiltonian QCD

Dyson--Schwinger equations are an established, powerful non-perturbative tool for QCD. In the Hamiltonian formulation of a quantum field theory they can be used to perform variational calculations with non-Gaussian wave functionals. By means of the DSEs the various $n$-point functions, needed in expectation values of observables like the Hamilton operator, can be thus expressed in terms of the variational kernels of our trial ansatz. Equations of motion for these variational kernels are derived by minimizing the energy density and solved numerically.

A non-perturbative study of the correlation functions of three-dimensional Yang-Mills theory

Yang-Mills theory is studied in three dimensions using the equations of motion of the $1$PI and $3$PI effective actions. The employed self-contained truncation includes the propagators, the three-point functions and the four-gluon vertex dynamically. In the gluon propagator also two-loop diagrams are taken into account. The higher gluonic correlation functions show sizable deviations from the tree-level only at low momenta. Also the couplings derived from the vertices agree well down to a few GeV. In addition, different methods to subtract spurious divergences are explored.

Correlation functions of three-dimensional Yang-Mills theory from Dyson-Schwinger equations

The two- and three-point functions and the four-gluon vertex of three-dimensional Yang-Mills theory are calculated from their Dyson-Schwinger equations and the 3PI effective action. Within a self-contained truncation various effects of truncating Dyson-Schwinger equations are studied. Estimates for the errors induced by truncations are derived from comparisons between results from different equations, comparisons with lattice results, and varying higher Green functions. The results indicate that the two-loop diagrams are important in the gluon propagator, where they are explicitly calculated, but not for the vertices. Furthermore, the influence of the four-gluon vertex on lower Green functions is found to be small.

Unquenching the three-gluon vertex: A status report

We discuss unquenching of the three-gluon vertex via its Dyson-Schwinger equation. We review the role of Furry's theorem and present first results for the quark triangle diagrams using non-perturbatively calculated dressing functions for the quark propagator and the quark-gluon vertex.

On gluon and ghost propagators in linear covariant gauges

We compute the gluon and ghost propagators of Yang-Mills theory in linear covariant gauges from the coupled system of Dyson-Schwinger equations. For small values of the gauge fixing parameter $ξ\sim 0.1$, the deviations to the Landau gauge already become clearly visible. For the ghost dressing function, this is reflected in a logarithmic infrared suppression. Also, the gluon dressing function changes - but only quantitatively - and the gluon propagator remains finite at zero momentum. From the results, a running coupling is extracted.

A Dyson-Schwinger study of the four-gluon vertex

We present a self-consistent calculation of the four-gluon vertex of Landau gauge Yang--Mills theory from a truncated Dyson--Schwinger equation. The equation contains the leading diagrams in the ultraviolet and is solved using as the only input results for lower Green functions from previous Dyson--Schwinger calculations that are in good agreement with lattice data. All quantities are therefore fixed and no higher Green functions enter within this truncation. Our self-consistent solution resolves the full momentum dependence of the vertex but is limited to the tree-level tensor structure at the moment. Calculations of selected dressing functions for other tensor structures from this solution are used to exemplify that they are suppressed compared to the tree-level structure except for possible logarithmic enhancements in the deep infrared. Our results furthermore allow one to extract a qualitative fit for the vertex and a running coupling.

Vertex functions of Coulomb gauge Yang--Mills theory

The canonical recursive Dyson--Schwinger equations for the three-gluon and ghost-gluon vertices are solved numerically. The employed truncation includes several previously neglected diagrams and includes back-coupling effects. We find an infrared finite ghost-gluon vertex and an infrared diverging three-gluon vertex. We also compare our results with those obtained in previous calculations, where bare vertices were used in the loop diagrams.

Spurious divergences in Dyson-Schwinger equations

We revisit the treatment of spurious ultraviolet divergences in the equation of motion of the gluon propagator caused by a momentum cutoff and the resulting violation of gauge invariance. With present continuum studies of the gluon propagator from its Dyson-Schwinger equation reaching the level of quantitatively accurate descriptions, it becomes increasingly important to understand how to subtract these spurious divergences in an unambiguous way. Here we propose such a method. It is based entirely on the asymptotic perturbative behavior of the QCD Green's functions without affecting non-perturbative aspects such as mass terms or the asymptotic infrared behavior. As a particular example, this allows us to assess the possible influence of the tadpole diagram beyond perturbation theory. Finally, we test this method numerically by solving the system of Dyson-Schwinger equations of the gluon and ghost propagators.
