Using cosmic neutrinos to search for non-perturbative physics at the Pierre Auger Observatory

The Pierre Auger (cosmic ray) Observatory provides a laboratory for studying fundamental physics at energies far beyond those available at colliders. The Observatory is sensitive not only to hadrons and photons, but can in principle detect ultrahigh energy neutrinos in the cosmic radiation. Interestingly, it may be possible to uncover new physics by analyzing characteristics of the neutrino flux at the Earth. By comparing the rate for quasi-horizontal, deeply penetrating air showers triggered by all types of neutrinos, with the rate for slightly upgoing showers generated by Earth-skimming tau neutrinos, we determine the ratio of events which would need to be detected in order to signal the existence of new non-perturbative interactions beyond the TeV-scale in which the final state energy is dominated by the hadronic component. We use detailed Monte Carlo simulations to calculate the effects of interactions in the Earth and in the atmosphere. We find that observation of 1 Earth-skimming and 10 quasi-horizontal events would exclude the standard model at the 99% confidence level. If new non-perturbative physics exists, a decade or so would be required to find it in the most optimistic case of a neutrino flux at the Waxman-Bahcall level and a neutrino-nucleon cross-section an order of magnitude above the standard model prediction.

Comparison of the sidereal angular velocity of subphotospheric layers and small bright coronal structures during the declining phase of solar cycle 23

Context. We compare solar differential rotation of subphotospheric layers derived from local helioseismology analysis of GONG++ dopplergrams and the one derived from tracing small bright coronal structures (SBCS) using EIT/SOHO images for the period August 2001 - December 2006, which correspond to the declining phase of solar cycle 23. Aims. The study aims to find a relationship between the rotation of the SBCS and the subphotospheric angular velocity. The northsouth asymmetries of both rotation velocity measurements are also investigated. Methods. Subphotospheric differential rotation was derived using ring-diagram analysis of GONG++ full-disk dopplergrams of 1 min cadence. The coronal rotation was derived by using an automatic method to identify and track the small bright coronal structures in EIT full-disk images of 6 hours cadence. Results. We find that the SBCS rotate faster than the considered upper subphotospheric layer (3Mm) by about 0.5 deg/day at the equator. This result joins the results of several other magnetic features (sunspots, plages, faculae, etc.) with a higher rotation than the solar plasma. The rotation rate latitudinal gradients of the SBCS and the subphotospheric layers are very similar. The SBCS motion shows an acceleration of about 0.005 deg/day/month during the declining phase of solar cycle 23, whereas the angular velocity of subsurface layers does not display any evident variation with time, except for the well known torsional oscillation pattern. Finally, both subphotospheric and coronal rotations of the southern hemisphere are predominantly larger than those of the northern hemisphere. At latitudes where the north-south asymmetry of the angular velocity increases (decreases) with activity for the SBCS, it decreases (increases) for subphotospheric layers.

Estimating the solar meridional circulation by normal mode decomposition

The objective of this article is to use Fourier-Hankel decomposition as suggested earlier by Braun & Fan (1998) to estimate the integrated horizontal meridional flow velocity as a function of mode penetration depth, and to find ways of potentially improve this technique. We use a time series of 43200 (30 days) consecutive full-disk Dopplergrams obtained by the MDI (Michelson Doppler Imager) instrument aboard the SOHO (Solar Heliospheric Observatory) spacecraft in April 1999. We find averaged meridional flow estimates of 15 m/s for modes with a penetration depth in the upper 20 Mm of the solar convection zone. This reproduces the results of the earlier investigations. Moreover we conclude that this method has the potential to become a new technique to measure the meridional circulation in the deep convection zone, if some improvements will be applied.

Meridional Circulation and Global Solar Oscillations

We investigate the influence of large-scale meridional circulation on solar p-modes by quasi-degenerate perturbation theory, as proposed by \cite{lavely92}. As an input flow we use various models of stationary meridional circulation obeying the continuity equation. This flow perturbs the eigenmodes of an equilibrium model of the Sun. We derive the signatures of the meridional circulation in the frequency multiplets of solar p-modes. In most cases the meridional circulation leads to negative average frequency shifts of the multiplets. Further possible observable effects are briefly discussed.

Measurement of the UHECR energy spectrum using data from the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory

At the southern site of the Pierre Auger Observatory, which is close to completion, an exposure that significantly exceeds the largest forerunner experiments has already been accumulated. We report a measurement of the cosmic ray energy spectrum based on the high statistics collected by the surface detector. The methods developed to determine the spectrum from reconstructed observables are described. The energy calibration of the observables, which exploits the correlation of surface detector data with fluorescence measurements in hybrid events, is presented in detail. The methods are simple and robust, exploiting the combination of fluorescence detector (FD) and surface detector (SD) and do not rely on detailed numerical simulation or any assumption about the chemical composition. Besides presenting statistical uncertainties, we address the impact of systematic uncertainties.

Simulation of up- and down-going neutrino induced showers at the site of the Pierre Auger Observatory

We present a study about the possibility to detect neutrino induced extensive air showers at the Pierre Auger Observatory. The Monte Carlo simulations performed take into account the details of the neutrino propagation inside the Earth, the air as well as the surrounding mountains which are modelled by a digital elevation map. Details on the sensitivity with respect to the incoming direction as well as the aperture and the total observable event rates are calculated on the basis of various assumptions of the incoming neutrino flux.

QED corrections to the evolution of parton distributions

We study the systematic inclusion of QED corrections in the evolution of parton distributions. O(alpha) corrections modify the evolution equation for parton distributions. They introduce additional parton distributions, like the photon distribution in the nucleon, and lead to additional mixing effects. We discuss the modifications for a realistic model of N_f,up up-type flavours and N_f,down down-type flavours. We have implemented these corrections into a numerical program and we quantify the size of these effects in a toy model. The corrections reach the order of 1%.

The Lateral Distribution Function of Shower Signals in the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory

The surface detector (SD) array of the southern Pierre Auger Observatory will consist of a triangular grid of 1600 water Cherenkov tanks with 1.5 km spacing. For zenith angles less than 60deg the primary energy can be estimated from the signal S(1000) at a distance of about 1000m from the shower axis, solely on basis of SD data. A suitable lateral distribution function (LDF) S(r) is fitted to the signals recorded by the water tanks and used to quantify S(1000). Therefore, knowledge of the LDF is a fundamental requirement for determining the energy of the primary particle. The Engineering Array (EA), a prototype facility consisting of 32 tanks, has taken data continuously since late 2001. On the basis of selected experimental data and Monte Carlo simulations various preliminary LDFs are examined.

Renormalization of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

The renormalization of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) is presented. We describe symmetry identities that constitute a framework in which the MSSM is completely characterized and renormalizability can be proven. Furthermore, we discuss applications of this framework for the determination of symmetry-restoring counterterms, the gauge dependence of tan(beta) and the derivation of non-renormalization theorems.

Six-fermion production at e+e- colliders

The class of six-fermion production processes at e+e- colliders comprises very interesting particle reactions, such as the production of top-quark pairs and of Higgs bosons in the intermediate Higgs mass range, the scattering of massive gauge bosons, and triple gauge-boson production. The Monte Carlo event generator LUSIFER is designed for the analysis of such processes. A few illustrating results obtained with LUSIFER are discussed.

LUSIFER: a LUcid approach to SIx-FERmion production

LUSIFER is a Monte Carlo event generator for all processes e+e-->6fermions, which is based on the multi-channel Monte Carlo integration technique and employs the full set of tree-level diagrams. External fermions are taken to be massless, but can be arbitrarily polarized. The calculation of the helicity amplitudes and of the squared matrix elements is presented in a compact way. Initial-state radiation is included at the leading logarithmic level using the structure-function approach. The discussion of numerical results contains a comprehensive list of cross sections relevant for a 500GeV collider, including a tuned comparison to results obtained with the combination of the WHIZARD and MADGRAPH packages as far as possible. Moreover, for off-shell top-quark pair production and the production of a Higgs boson in the intermediate mass range we additionally discuss some phenomenologically interesting distributions. Finally, we numerically analyze the effects of gauge-invariance violation by comparing various ways of introducing decay widths of intermediate top quarks, gauge and Higgs bosons.

Renormalization of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

The renormalization of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model of electroweak interactions is presented to all orders of perturbation theory using the algebraic method. Special attention is directed to the issues of soft supersymmetry breaking, gauge fixing, and infrared finiteness. We discuss the implications of $\hbar$-dependent field parametrizations on the counterterm structure and provide a complete set of on-shell normalization conditions.
