Constraining anomalous Higgs boson couplings to virtual photons

We present a study of Higgs boson production in vector boson fusion and in association with a vector boson and its decay to two vector bosons, with a focus on the treatment of virtual loops and virtual photons. Our analysis is performed with the JHU generator framework. Comparisons are made to several other frameworks, and the results are expressed in terms of an effective field theory. New features of this study include a proposal on how to handle singularities involving Higgs boson decays to light fermions via photons, calculation of the partial Higgs boson width in the presence of anomalous couplings to photons, a comparison of the next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections to effects from effective couplings, and phenomenological observations regarding the special role of intermediate photons in analysis of LHC data in the effective field theory framework. Some of these features are illustrated with projections for experimental measurements with the full LHC and HL-LHC datasets.

Probing the CP structure of the top quark Yukawa coupling: Loop sensitivity vs. on-shell sensitivity

The question whether the Higgs boson is connected to additional CP violation is one of the driving forces behind precision studies at the Large Hadron Collider. In this work, we investigate the CP structure of the top quark Yukawa interaction-one of the most prominent places for searching for New Physics-through Higgs boson loops in top quark pair production. We calculate the electroweak corrections including arbitrary CP mixtures at next-to-leading-order in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory. This approach of probing Higgs boson degrees of freedom relies on the large $t\bar{t}$ cross section and the excellent perturbative control. In addition, we consider all direct probes with on-shell Higgs boson production in association with a single top quark or top quark pair. This allows us to contrast loop sensitivity versus on-shell sensitivity in these fundamentally different process dynamics. We find that loop sensitivity in $t\bar{t}$ production and on-shell sensitivity in $t\bar{t}H$ and $tH$ provide complementary handles over a wide range of parameter space.

New features in the JHU generator framework: constraining Higgs boson properties from on-shell and off-shell production

We present an extension of the JHUGen and MELA framework, which includes an event generator and library for the matrix element analysis. It enables simulation, optimal discrimination, reweighting techniques, and analysis of a bosonic resonance and the triple and quartic gauge boson interactions with the most general anomalous couplings. The new features, which become especially relevant at the current stage of LHC data taking, are the simulation of gluon fusion and vector boson fusion in the off-shell region, associated $ZH$ production at NLO QCD including the $gg$ initial state, and the simulation of a second spin-zero resonance. We also quote translations of the anomalous coupling measurements into constraints on dimension-six operators of an effective field theory. Some of the new features are illustrated with projections for experimental measurements with the full LHC and HL-LHC datasets.

Electroweak Loops as a Probe of New Physics in $t\bar{t}$ Production at the LHC

We calculate the $\mathcal{O}(α)$ weak corrections to top quark pair production at the LHC and include anomalous electroweak interactions from dimension-six operators. The loop calculation and renormalization are consistently done within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory. Sensitivity to the involved operators is exposed through the virtual corrections, which receive enhancement from electroweak Sudakov logarithms. We investigate the prospects of using this feature for probing New Physics at the LHC that so far has only been studied in final states with on-shell sensitivity such as $t\bar{t}+Z$ or $t \to b W$. We find that the large $t\bar{t}$ production rate and the excellent perturbative control allow compensating the loop suppression and yield remarkably strong constraints that are competitive with those from $t\bar{t}+Z$.

Constraining anomalous Higgs boson couplings to the heavy flavor fermions using matrix element techniques

In this paper we investigate anomalous interactions of the Higgs boson with heavy fermions, employing shapes of kinematic distributions. We study the processes $pp \to t\bar{t} + H$, $b\bar{b} + H$, $tq+H$, and $pp \to H\toτ^+τ^-$, and present applications of event generation, re-weighting techniques for fast simulation of anomalous couplings, as well as matrix element techniques for optimal sensitivity. We extend the MELA technique, which proved to be a powerful matrix element tool for Higgs boson discovery and characterization during Run I of the LHC, and implement all analysis tools in the JHU generator framework. A next-to-leading order QCD description of the $pp \to t\bar{t} + H$ process allows us to investigate the performance of MELA in the presence of extra radiation. Finally, projections for LHC measurements through the end of Run III are presented.

The top quark charge asymmetry in $t\bar{t}γ$ production at the LHC

We consider the top quark charge asymmetry in the process $pp \to t\bar{t}+γ$ at the 13 TeV LHC. The genuine tree level asymmetry in the $q\bar{q}$ channel is large with about -12%. However, the symmetric $gg$ channel, photon radiation off top quark decay products, and higher order corrections wash out the asymmetry and obscure its observability. In this work, we investigate these effects at next-to-leading order QCD and check the robustness of theoretical predictions. We find a sizable perturbative correction and discuss its origins and implications. We also study dedicated cuts for enhancing the asymmetry and show that a measurement is possible with an integrated luminosity of 150 fb$^{-1}$.

Precise QCD Description of the Higgs Boson Transverse Momentum Spectrum

The transverse momentum ($p_T$) distribution of Higgs bosons at hadron colliders enables a detailed probe of its production dynamics and is a key ingredient to precision studies of Higgs boson properties, but receives very large QCD corrections. We obtain a precision prediction for the $p_T$ spectrum by matching second-order (NNLO) QCD corrections at large $p_T$ with resummation of third-order logarithmic (N$^3$LL) corrections at small $p_T$. We achieve significantly improved results for $p_T< 35\,{\rm GeV}$ with perturbative uncertainties $\lesssim \pm 6\%$, and thus a convergent perturbative series for all values of $p_T$.

The Schulze Method of Voting

We propose a new single-winner election method ("Schulze method") and prove that it satisfies many academic criteria (e.g. monotonicity, reversal symmetry, resolvability, independence of clones, Condorcet criterion, k-consistency, polynomial runtime). We then generalize this method to proportional representation by the single transferable vote ("Schulze STV") and to methods to calculate a proportional ranking ("Schulze proportional ranking"). Furthermore, we propose a generalization of the Condorcet criterion to multi-winner elections. This paper contains a large number of examples to illustrate the proposed methods.

Pinning down electroweak dipole operators of the top quark

We consider hadronic top quark pair production and pair production in association with a photon or a $Z$ boson to probe electroweak dipole couplings in $t\bar{b}W$, $t\bar{t}γ$ and $t\bar{t}Z$ interactions. We demonstrate how measurements of these processes at the 13 TeV LHC can be combined to disentangle and constrain anomalous dipole operators. The construction of cross section ratios allows us to significantly reduce various uncertainties and exploit orthogonal sensitivity between the $t\bar{t}γ$ and $t\bar{t}Z$ couplings. In addition, we show that angular correlations in $t\bar{t}$ production can be used to constrain the remaining $t\bar{b}W$ dipole operator. Our approach yields excellent sensitivity to the anomalous couplings and can be a further step towards precise and direct measurements of the top quark electroweak interactions.

Top quark mass determination from the energy peaks of b-jets and B-hadrons at NLO QCD

We analyze the energy spectra of $single$ b-jets and B-hadrons resulting from the production and decay of top quarks within the SM at the LHC at the NLO QCD. For both hadrons and jets, we calculate the correlation of the peak of the spectrum with the top quark mass, considering the "energy-peak" as an observable to determine the top quark mass. Such a method is motivated by our previous work where we argued that this approach can have reduced sensitivity to the details of the production mechanism of the top quark, whether it is higher-order QCD effects or new physics contributions. As part of the NLO improvement over the original proposal, we assess the residual sensitivity of the extracted top quark mass to perturbative effects both in top quark production and decay. For a 1% jet energy scale uncertainty (and assuming negligible statistical error), the top quark mass can then be extracted using the energy-peak of b-jets with an error +- (1.2 (exp) + 0.6(th)) GeV. We note that recently the CMS collaboration reported a top quark mass measurement based on the original proposal (with b-jets) so that our result contributes to a precise evaluation of the associated theory uncertainty. In view of the dominant jet energy scale uncertainty in the measurement using b-jets, we also investigate the extraction of the top quark mass from the energy-peak of the corresponding B-hadrons which, in principle, can be measured without this uncertainty. The calculation of the B-hadron energy spectrum is carried out using fragmentation functions at NLO. The dependence on the fragmentation scale turns out to be the largest theoretical uncertainty in this extraction of top quark mass. Future improvement of the treatment of bottom quark hadronization can reduce this uncertainty, rendering methods based on the B-hadron energy-peak competitive for the top quark mass measurement.

Constraining couplings of the top quarks to the Z boson in ttbar+Z production at the LHC

We study top quark pair production in association with a Z boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and investigate the prospects of measuring the couplings of top quarks to the Z boson. To date these couplings have not been constrained in direct measurements. Such a determination will be possible for the first time at the LHC. Our calculation improves previous coupling studies through the inclusion of next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections in production and decays of all unstable particles. We treat top quarks in the narrow-width approximation and retain all NLO spin correlations. To determine the sensitivity of a coupling measurement we perform a binned log-likelihood ratio test based on normalization and shape information of the angle between the leptons from the Z boson decay. The obtained limits account for statistical uncertainties as well as leading theoretical systematics from residual scale dependence and parton distribution functions. We use current CMS data to place the first direct constraints on the ttbZ couplings. We also consider the upcoming high-energy LHC run and find that with 300 inverse fb of data at an energy of 13 TeV the vector and axial ttbZ couplings can be constrained at the 95% confidence level to C_V=0.24^{+0.39}_{-0.85} and C_A=-0.60^{+0.14}_{-0.18}, where the central values are the Standard Model predictions. This is a reduction of uncertainties by 25% and 42%, respectively, compared to an analysis based on leading-order predictions. We also translate these results into limits on dimension-six operators contributing to the ttbZ interactions beyond the Standard Model.

Fiducial cross sections for Higgs boson production in association with a jet at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD

We extend the recent computation of Higgs boson production in association with a jet through next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD by including decays of the Higgs boson to electroweak vector bosons. This allows us to compute fiducial cross sections and kinematic distributions including realistic selection criteria for the Higgs boson decay products. As an illustration, we present results for $pp \to H + j \to γγ+ j$ closely following the ATLAS 8 TeV analysis and for $pp \to H+ j \to W W + j \to e^+ μ^- ν\bar ν+ j $ in a CMS-like 13 TeV setup.

Higgs boson production in association with a jet at next-to-next-to-leading order

We present precise predictions for Higgs boson production in association with a jet. Our calculation is accurate to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD in the Higgs Effective Field Theory and constitutes the first complete NNLO computation for Higgs production with a final-state jet in hadronic collisions. We include all relevant phenomenological channels and present fully-differential results as well as total cross sections for the LHC. Our NNLO predictions reduce the unphysical scale dependence by more than a factor of two and enhance the total rate by about twenty percent compared to NLO QCD predictions. Our results demonstrate for the first time satisfactory convergence of the perturbative series.

Probing top-Z dipole moments at the LHC and ILC

We investigate the weak electric and magnetic dipole moments of top quark-Z boson interactions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International Linear Collider (ILC). Their vanishingly small magnitude in the Standard Model makes these couplings ideal for probing New Physics interactions and for exploring the role of top quarks in electroweak symmetry breaking. In our analysis, we consider the production of two top quarks in association with a Z boson at the LHC, and top quark pairs mediated by neutral gauge bosons at the ILC. These processes yield direct sensitivity to top quark-Z boson interactions and complement indirect constraints from electroweak precision data. Our computation is accurate to next-to-leading order in QCD, we include the full decay chain of top quarks and the Z boson, and account for theoretical uncertainties in our constraints. We find that LHC experiments will soon be able to probe weak dipole moments for the first time.

On the spin and parity of a single-produced resonance at the LHC

The experimental determination of the properties of the newly discovered boson at the Large Hadron Collider is currently the most crucial task in high energy physics. We show how information about the spin, parity, and, more generally, the tensor structure of the boson couplings can be obtained by studying angular and mass distributions of events in which the resonance decays to pairs of gauge bosons, $ZZ, WW$, and $γγ$. A complete Monte Carlo simulation of the process $pp \to X \to VV \to 4f$ is performed and verified by comparing it to an analytic calculation of the decay amplitudes $X \to VV \to 4f$. Our studies account for all spin correlations and include general couplings of a spin $J=0,1,2$ resonance to Standard Model particles. We also discuss how to use angular and mass distributions of the resonance decay products for optimal background rejection. It is shown that by the end of the 8 TeV run of the LHC, it might be possible to separate extreme hypotheses of the spin and parity of the new boson with a confidence level of 99% or better for a wide range of models. We briefly discuss the feasibility of testing scenarios where the resonances is not a parity eigenstate.

Constraining anomalous HVV interactions at proton and lepton colliders

In this paper, we study the extent to which CP parity of a Higgs boson, and more generally its anomalous couplings to gauge bosons, can be measured at the LHC and a future electron-positron collider. We consider several processes, including Higgs boson production in gluon and weak boson fusion and production of a Higgs boson in association with an electroweak gauge boson. We consider decays of a Higgs boson including $ZZ, WW, γγ$, and $Z γ$. Matrix element approach to three production and decay topologies is developed and applied in the analysis. A complete Monte Carlo simulation of the above processes at proton and $e^+e^-$ colliders is performed and verified by comparing it to an analytic calculation. Prospects for measuring various tensor couplings at existing and proposed facilities are compared.

ttbar+Large missing energy from top-quark partners: a comprehensive study at NLO QCD

We perform a detailed study of top-quark partner production in the ttbar plus large missing energy final-state at the LHC, presenting results for both scalar and fermionic top-quark partners in the semi-leptonic and dileptonic decay modes of the top quarks. We compare the results of several simulation tools: leading-order matrix elements, next-to-leading order matrix elements, leading-order plus parton shower simulations, and merged samples that contain the signal process with an additional hard jet radiated. We find that predictions from leading-order plus parton shower simulations can significantly deviate from NLO QCD or LO merged samples and do not correctly model the kinematics of the ttbar + ETmiss signature. They are therefore not a good framework for modeling this new physics signature. On the other hand, the acceptances obtained with a merged sample of the leading-order process together with the radiation of an additional hard jet are in agreement with the NLO predictions. We also demonstrate that the scale variation of the inclusive cross section, plus that of the acceptance, does not accurately reflect the uncertainty of the cross section after cuts, which is typically larger. We show the importance of including higher-order QCD corrections when using kinematic distributions to determine the spin of the top-quark partner.

Kinematics of Top Quark Final States: A Snowmass White Paper

This is the summary report of the Top Quark Kinematics working group prepared for Snowmass 2013. We survey the current state of theoretical predictions for top pair differential distributions, in both boosted and un-boosted regimes, and present an overview of uncertainties and prospects for top spin correlations. We study the prospects for measuring the inclusive SM top pair production asymmetry AFC at LHC 14 as a function of systematic error, and show that some improvement over current systematic uncertainties, as customarily handled, is required for observing a SM-size asymmetry. Cuts on top pair invariant mass and rapidity do not substantially alter this conclusion. We summarize the conclusions of contributed studies on alternate LHC measurements of the ttbar production asymmetry, in ttbar+jet final states and in forward top production at LHCb, both of which show good prospects for observing SM-size asymmetries in 50 fb-1 of data at LHC14.
