On what finitely generated (left-orderable) simple groups can know about their subgroups

In this paper, we survey some of the recent advances on embeddings into finitely generated (left-orderable) simple group such that the overgroup preserves algorithmic, geometric, or algebraic information about the embedded group. We discuss some new consequences and also extend some of those embedding theorems to countable classes of finitely generated groups.

Random Quotients of Free Products

We introduce a density model for random quotients of a free product of finitely generated groups. We prove that a random quotient in this model has the following properties with overwhelming probability: if the density is below $1/2$, the free factors embed into the random quotient and the random quotient is hyperbolic relative to the free factors. Further, there is a phase transition at $1/2$, with the random quotient being a finite group above this density. If the density is below $1/6$, the random quotient is cubulated relative to the free factors. Moreover, if the free factors are cubulated, then so is the random quotient.

Uniform growth in small cancellation groups

An open question asks whether every group acting acylindrically on a hyperbolic space has uniform exponential growth. We prove that the class of groups of uniform uniform exponential growth acting acylindrically on a hyperbolic space is closed under taking certain geometric small cancellation quotients. There are two consequences: firstly, there is a finitely generated acylindrically hyperbolic group that has uniform exponential growth but has arbitrarily large torsion balls. Secondly, the uniform uniform exponential growth rate of a classical $C''(\lambda)$-small cancellation group, for sufficiently small $\lambda$, is bounded from below by a universal positive constant. We give a similar result for uniform entropy-cardinality estimates. This yields an explicit upper bound on the isomorphism class of marked $\delta$-hyperbolic $C''(\lambda)$-small cancellation groups of uniformly bounded entropy in terms of $\delta$ and the entropy bound.

Subgroups and diversity of left-orderable small cancellation groups

We arrange classical small cancellation constructions to produce left-orderable groups: we show that every finitely generated group is the quotient of a left-ordered small cancellation group by a finitely generated kernel (Rips construction). We give presentations of left-ordered hyperbolic small cancellation groups that are not locally indicable, and observe that the class of left-ordered small cancellation groups that are not locally indicable is quasi-isometrically diverse. Altogether, this shows that left-orderable small cancellation groups form a rich and diverse class.

Product set growth in Burnside groups

Given a periodic quotient of a torsion-free hyperbolic group, we provide a fine lower estimate of the growth function of any sub-semi-group. This generalizes results of Razborov and Safin for free groups.

Embeddings into left-orderable simple groups

We prove that every countable left-ordered group embeds into a finitely generated left-ordered simple group. Moreover, if the first group has a computable left-order, then the simple group also has a computable left-order. We also obtain a Boone-Higman-Thompson type theorem for left-orderable groups with recursively enumerable positive cones. These embeddings are Frattini embeddings, and isometric whenever the initial group is finitely generated. Finally, we reprove Thompson's theorem on word problem preserving embeddings into finitely generated simple groups and observe that the embedding is isometric.

Product set growth in groups and hyperbolic geometry

Generalising results of Razborov and Safin, and answering a question of Button, we prove that for every hyperbolic group there exists a constant $α>0$ such that for every finite subset $U$ that is not contained in a virtually cyclic subgroup $|U^n|\geqslant (α|U|)^{[(n+1)/2]}$. Similar estimates are established for groups acting acylindrically on trees or hyperbolic spaces.

A combination theorem for cubulation in small cancellation theory over free products

We prove that a group obtained as a quotient of the free product of finitely many cubulable groups by a finite set of relators satisfying the classical $C'(1/6)$--small cancellation condition is cubulable. This yields a new large class of relatively hyperbolic groups that can be cubulated, and constitutes the first instance of a cubulability theorem for relatively hyperbolic groups which does not require any geometric assumption on the peripheral subgroups besides their cubulability. We do this by constructing appropriate wallspace structures for such groups, by combining walls of the free factors with walls coming from the universal cover of an associated $2$-complex of groups.

Rips-Segev torsion-free groups without the unique product property

We generalize the graphical small cancellation theory of Gromov to a graphical small cancellation theory over the free product. We extend Gromov's small cancellation theorem to the free product. We explain and generalize Rips-Segev's construction of torsion-free groups without the unique product property by viewing these groups as given by graphical small cancellation presentations over the free product. Our graphical small cancellation theorem then provides first examples of Gromov hyperbolic groups without the unique product property. We construct uncountably many non-isomorphic torsion-free groups without the unique product property. We show that the presentations of generalized Rips-Segev groups are not generic among finite presentations of groups.

Finite index subgroups without unique product in graphical small cancellation groups

We construct torsion-free hyperbolic groups without unique product whose subgroups up to some given finite index are themselves non-unique product groups. This is achieved by generalising a construction of Comerford to graphical small cancellation presentations, showing that for every subgroup $H$ of a graphical small cancellation group there exists a free group $F$ such that $H*F$ admits a graphical small cancellation presentation.

Rips construction without unique product

Given a finitely presented group $Q,$ we produce a short exact sequence $1\to N \hookrightarrow G \twoheadrightarrow Q \to 1$ such that $G$ is a torsion-free Gromov hyperbolic group without the unique product property and $N$ is without the unique product property and has Kazhdan's Property (T). Varying $Q,$ we show a wide diversity of concrete examples of Gromov hyperbolic groups without the unique product property. As an application, we obtain Tarski monster groups without the unique product property.
