Emergent gold-induced interfacial magnetism in monolayer FePS$_3$

Owing to their atomically clean interfaces and extreme thinness, two-dimensional (2D) materials are ideal hosts for strong proximity effects, whereby contact with an adjacent material reshapes their ground state. Here, we demonstrate such an effect within a hybrid heterostructure, between the 2D antiferromagnet FePS$_3$ and an ultrathin gold film. Rather than a passive support, the latter profoundly changes the nature of the magnetism in the 2D magnet, inducing a sizeable interfacial moment. Large-area flakes from Au-assisted exfoliation, combined with element-selective X-ray absorption mapping, enable a layer-by-layer study from monolayer to bulk, benchmarked against an inert SiO$_2$ substrate reference. At 9 T and 5 K, the monolayer on gold shows a three-fold enhanced X-ray magnetic circular dichroism relative to SiO$_2$, with a $\sim$40% reduction of the orbital-to-spin moment ratio. Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering reveals a collapse of the crystal-field (d-d) excitations and a massive spectral-weight transfer to the charge-transfer region, unveiling the microscopic mechanism behind this change. Supported by atomic multiplet calculations, we identify interfacial charge transfer and Fe 3d-Au hybridization as the origin of these effects, which decay over the first three layers and vanish at the pentalayer, establishing layer number combined with substrate engineering as an atomically precise handle.

Multiorbital Anisotropy and Magnetic Excitations in Trilayer Nickelate Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$

Rare-earth substitution strongly modifies the structure, metallicity, and superconducting behavior of Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) nickelates, but its impact on their magnetic interactions remains unclear. Here, we combine x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to resolve the multiorbital electronic structure and magnetic excitations of Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$. The absence of an overlapping rare-earth resonance provides direct access to the Ni $L_3$ edge, while polarization-dependent measurements at the Ni $L$- and O $K$-edges resolve distinct planar and out-of-plane Ni-O hybridization channels. Momentum-resolved RIXS reveals dispersive magnetic excitations that soften toward the incommensurate spin-density-wave wave vector. An effective spin-wave analysis yields a sizable intra-trilayer exchange coupling, comparable to the leading in-plane interactions and robust against rare-earth substitution. Our results identify the multilayer architecture, rather than rare-earth substitution alone, as a key control knob of the magnetic interactions in these materials.

Spin correlations in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ thin films

The discovery of ambient-pressure superconductivity with $T_{c,\text{onset}} > 40$ K in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ (LNO) thin films grown on the SrLaAlO$_4$ (SLAO) substrate with compressive ($\varepsilon\approx-2\%$) epitaxial strain provides a unique platform for investigating the superconducting mechanism in nickelate superconductors. Here, we use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) to unveil the dispersive spin excitations in the LNO/SLAO thin film and establish the strain dependence of the electronic and spin excitations in LNO thin films with strain ranging from $\varepsilon\approx-2\%$ to $+1.9\%$. Compared with bulk LNO, LNO/SLAO exhibits similar $dd$ excitations and spin dynamics, but with a larger spin-excitation bandwidth, whereas tensile-strained LNO/SrTiO$_3$ exhibits a marked suppression of both the spin excitations and the Ni $3d_{z^2}$-derived $dd$ excitations. This evolution reflects a strain-tuned interlayer exchange interaction $J_z$ and Ni $3d_{z^2}$-O 2$p_z$ hybridization. Our results demonstrate how epitaxial strain modulates the interlayer magnetic coupling and are consistent with scenarios in which the interlayer antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction promotes interlayer pairing in bilayer nickelates.

Ligand Mediated Magnetic Coupling Across Metamagnetic Transitions in CrPS4

Chromium thiophosphate (CrPS4) is a long-known material: a layered semiconducting antiferromagnet. Its recently discovered gate-tunable metamagnetic phase transitions, the remarkable positive and oscillating magnetoresistance as a tunnel barrier, and its Fano-resonance luminescence, elusive among the multitude of Cr3+ compounds, call for revisiting the understanding of its electronic structure, especially regarding how it relates to magnetic order. Here, we employ X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, implemented in both absorption and resonant inelastic X-ray spectroscopies, together with quantum many-body calculations, to unveil the role of metal-ligand covalency in mediating the metamagnetic transitions in CrPS4, using crystal-field and charge-transfer excitations as fingerprints of the evolving magnetic order. We reveal the role of extended superexchange paths involving P and S atoms, coupling interactions between the Cr spins across the different magnetic phases: antiferromagnetic, canted, and ferromagnetic. Our results elucidate the electronic states involved in these phases and provide prescriptions for engineering the metamagnetic phase diagram of CrPS4.

Collective spin excitations in trilayer nickelate La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$

Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) nickelates have recently emerged as a new family of high-temperature superconductors. In bilayer RP nickelates, magnetic excitations with large exchange couplings have been observed, supporting a spin-mediated pairing mechanism. Whether comparable spin correlations persist in trilayer nickelates, however, remains unknown. Here, we present a Ni $L$-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study of La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ single crystals. While the orbital excitations remain similar to those of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7}$, the collective spin excitations in La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ exhibit a comparable bandwidth of about $60$ meV but substantially suppressed spectral weight, implying a weaker electronic correlation in the trilayer compounds. Our results underscore the three-dimensional and multi-orbital electronic character in La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$, highlighting important differences from the bilayer nickelates. These findings provide crucial insights into the evolution of magnetism across the RP nickelate family and its connection to superconductivity.

Precursor phase with full phonon softening above the charge-density-wave phase transition in $2H$-TaSe$_2$

Research on charge-density-wave (CDW) ordered transition-metal dichalcogenides continues to unravel new states of quantum matter correlated to the intertwined lattice and electronic degrees of freedom. Here, we report an inelastic x-ray scattering investigation of the lattice dynamics of the canonical CDW compound $2H$-TaSe$_2$ complemented by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our results rule out the central-peak scenario for the CDW transition in $2H$-TaSe$_2$ and provide evidence for a novel precursor phase above the CDW transition temperature $T_{CDW}$. The phase at temperatures between $T^{*}\,(= 128.7\,,\rm{K})$ and $T_{CDW}\,(= 121.3\,\rm{K})$ is characterized by a fully softened phonon mode and medium-range ordered ($ξ_{corr} = 100\,\rm{\mathring{A}}- 200\,\rm{\mathring{A}})$ static CDW domains. Only $T_{CDW}$ is detectable in our photoemission experiments. Thus, $2H$-TaSe$_2$ exhibits structural before electronic static order and emphasizes the important lattice contribution to CDW transitions.
