On the particle content of MHS theory

The Moyal-Higher-Spin (MHS) formalism, involving fields dependent on spacetime and auxiliary coordinates, is an approach to studying higher spin (HS)-like models. To determine the particle content of the MHS model of the Yang-Mills type, we calculate the quartic Casimir operator for on-shell MHS fields, finding it generally non-vanishing, indicative of infinite/continuous-spin degrees of freedom. We propose an on-shell basis for these infinite/continuous-spin states. Additionally, we analyse the content of a massive MHS model.

Rotations and boosts of Hermite functions

We provide transformation matrices for arbitrary Lorentz transformations of multidimensional Hermite functions in any dimension. These serve as a valuable tool for analyzing spacetime properties of MHS fields, and aid in the description of the relativistic harmonic oscillator and digital image manipulation. We also focus on finite boosts and rotations around specific axes, enabling us to identify the Lorentz Lie algebra generators. As an application and to establish a contact with the literature we construct a basis in which the two dimensional rotation operator is diagonal. We comment on the use of hypergeometric functions, the Wigner d-functions, Kravchuk polynomials, Jacobi polynomials and generalized associated Legendre functions.

Gauging the higher-spin-like symmetries by the Moyal product

We analyze a novel approach to gauging rigid higher derivative (higher spin) symmetries of free relativistic actions defined on flat spacetime, building on the formalism originally developed by Bonora et al. and Bekaert et al. in their studies of linear coupling of matter fields to an infinite tower of higher spin fields. The off-shell definition is based on fields defined on a $2d$-dimensional master space equipped with a symplectic structure, where the infinite dimensional Lie algebra of gauge transformations is given by the Moyal commutator. Using this algebra we construct well-defined weakly non-local actions, both in the gauge and the matter sector, by mimicking the Yang-Mills procedure. The theory allows for a description in terms of an infinite tower of higher spin spacetime fields only on-shell. Interestingly, Euclidean theory allows for such a description also off-shell. Owing to its formal similarity to non-commutative field theories, the formalism allows for the introduction of a covariant potential which plays the role of the generalised vielbein. This covariant formulation uncovers the existence of other phases and shows that the theory can be written in a matrix model form. The symmetries of the theory are analyzed and conserved currents are explicitly constructed. By studying the spin-2 sector we show that the emergent geometry is closely related to teleparallel geometry, in the sense that the induced linear connection is opposite to Weitzenböck's.

Does three dimensional electromagnetic field inherit the spacetime symmetries?

We prove that the electromagnetic field in a (1+2)-dimensional spacetime necessarily inherits the symmetries of the spacetime metric in a large class of generalized Einstein-Maxwell theories. The Lagrangians of the studied theories have general diff-covariant gravitational part and include both the gravitational and the gauge Chern-Simons terms.

Parity-odd surface anomalies and correlation functions on conical defects

We analyse the parity-odd ("type P") surface anomalies of the energy-momentum tensor correlators in conformal field theories, with an emphasis on d=4 and d=3 dimensional spacetimes. Using cohomology analysis we construct the expression for the most general P-type surface trace anomaly on a singular 2-dimensional surface in 4-dimensional bulk spacetimes. As an important example, we specialise to the case when the singular surface is a conical defect and show that the bulk P-type Pontryagin trace anomaly induces such a surface trace anomaly. We show that this conical type P surface trace anomaly is given purely by the outer curvature tensor. In addition, we analyse parity-odd surface contact terms in energy-momentum tensor correlators in the flat spacetime induced by the conical defect by studying two special cases in which the contact terms are induced by, (1) type P trace anomaly in d=4 and, (2) gravitational Chern-Simons Lagrangian term in d=3 spacetime dimensions. In both cases we show that the surface contact terms appear in correlators of the lower rank than the corresponding bulk surface terms.

Symmetries and gravitational Chern-Simons Lagrangian terms

We consider some general consequences of adding pure gravitational Chern-Simons term to manifestly diff-covariant theories of gravity. Extending the result of a previous paper we enlarge the class of metrics for which the inclusion of a gCS term in the action does not affect solutions and corresponding physical quantities. In the case in which such solutions describe black holes (of general horizon topology) we show that the black hole entropy is also unchanged. We arrive at these conclusions by proving three general theorems and studying their consequences. One of the theorems states that the contribution of the gravitational Chern-Simons to the black hole entropy is invariant under local rescaling of the metric.

Stationary rotating black holes in theories with gravitational Chern-Simons Lagrangian term

We study the effects of introducing purely gravitational Chern-Simons Lagrangian terms in ordinary Einstein gravity on stationary rotating black hole solutions and on the associated thermodynamical properties, in a generic number of dimensions which support these terms (i.e. in D = 4k-1). We analyze the conditions, namely the number of vanishing angular momenta, under which the contributions of the Chern-Simons term to the equations of motion and the black hole entropy vanish. The particular case of a 7-dimensional theory in which a purely gravitational Chern-Simons term is added to the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian in D=7 dimensions is investigated in some detail. As we have not been able to find exact analytic solutions in nontrivial cases, we turn to perturbation theory and calculate the first-order perturbative correction to the Myers-Perry metric in the case where all angular momenta are equal. The expansion parameter is a dimensionless combination linear in the Chern-Simons coupling constant and the angular momentum. Corrections to horizon and ergosurface properties, as well as black hole entropy and temperature, are presented.

Gravitational Chern-Simons Lagrangian terms and spherically symmetric spacetimes

We show that for general spherically symmetric configurations, contributions of general gravitational and mixed gauge-gravitational Chern-Simons terms to the equations of motion vanish identically in $D>3$ dimensions. This implies that such terms in the action do not affect Birkhoff's theorem or any previously known spherically symmetric solutions. Furthermore, we investigate the thermodynamical properties using the procedure described in an accompanying paper. We find that in $D>3$ static spherically symmetric case Chern-Simons terms do not contribute to the entropy either. Moreover, if one requires only for the metric tensor to be spherically symmetric, letting other fields unrestricted, the results extend almost completely, with only one possible exception --- Chern-Simons Lagrangian terms in which the gravitational part is just the $n=2$ irreducible gravitational Chern-Simons term.

Gravitational Chern-Simons Lagrangians and black hole entropy

We analyze the problem of defining the black hole entropy when Chern-Simons terms are present in the action. Extending previous works, we define a general procedure, valid in any odd dimensions both for purely gravitational CS terms and for mixed gauge-gravitational ones. The final formula is very similar to Wald's original formula valid for covariant actions, with a significant modification. Notwithstanding an apparent violation of covariance we argue that the entropy formula is indeed covariant.

alpha'^2-corrections to extremal dyonic black holes in heterotic string theory

We calculate alpha'^2-corrections to the entropy of the 5-dimensional 3-charge and the 4-dimensional 4-charge large extremal black holes using the low energy effective action of the heterotic string theory. In the 4-dimensional case, our results are in agreement with the microscopic statistical entropy both for the BPS and the non-BPS black holes. In the more interesting 5-dimensional case, where the direct microscopic stringy description is still unknown, our results for the BPS black holes are in agreement with the results obtained from the action supplemented with R^2-correction obtained by supersymmetric completion of the gravitational Chern-Simons term. This agreement does not extend to the non-BPS black holes, for which we propose a different expression for the entropy. We show that the new expression is supported by certain alpha'^3-order calculations, and by the arguments based on the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Five-dimensional black holes in heterotic string theory

We review recent results on near-horizon static black hole solutions and entropy in R^2-corrected N=2 SUGRA in D=5, focusing on actions connected to heterotic string compactified on K3\times S^1. Comparison with α'-perturbative results, results obtained by using simple Gauss-Bonnet R^2-correction, OSV conjecture and microscopic stringy description (for small black holes) shows that situation in D=5 is, in a sense, even more interesting then in D=4.

Extremal black holes in D=5: SUSY vs. Gauss-Bonnet corrections

We analyse near-horizon solutions and compare the results for the black hole entropy of five-dimensional spherically symmetric extremal black holes when the N=2 SUGRA actions are supplied with two different types of higher-order corrections: (1) supersymmetric completion of gravitational Chern-Simons term, and (2) Gauss-Bonnet term. We show that for large BPS black holes lowest order α' corrections to the entropy are the same, but for non-BPS are generally different. We pay special attention to the class of prepotentials connected with K3\times T^2 and T^6 compactifications. For supersymmetric correction we find beside BPS also a set of non-BPS solutions. In the particular case of T^6 compactification (equivalent to the heterotic string on $T^4\times S^1$) we find the (almost) complete set of solutions (with exception of some non-BPS small black holes), and show that entropy of small black holes is different from statistical entropy obtained by counting of microstates of heterotic string theory. We also find complete set of solutions for K3\times T^2 and T^6 case when correction is given by Gauss-Bonnet term. Contrary to four-dimensional case, obtained entropy is different from the one with supersymmetric correction. We show that in Gauss-Bonnet case entropy of small ``BPS'' black holes agrees with microscopic entropy in the known cases.
