Factorizing quarkonium LDMEs and TMDSTFs using effective field theory

We use effective field theory to factorize production matrix elements that appear in the NRQCD framework for quarkonium cross sections. By applying a Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation and appropriate field redefinitions, we show that the soft and ultrasoft sectors of NRQCD can be decoupled from the heavy quark and antiquark fields in a hybrid vNRQCD/pNRQCD Lagrangian at leading order in the velocity power-counting. This enables us to re-factorize quarkonium production matrix elements in terms of matrix elements of color-singlet composite fields, which we can write as the wave-function at the origin, and state independent vacuum correlators of chromo-electric and chromo-magnetic gluon fields. This approach verifies powerful relationships between the LDMEs of different S-wave quarkonia originally derived using pNRQCD. Additionally, it allows us to derive new relationships for the production matrix elements used in the transverse momentum dependent factorization (TMD) framework, known as TMD soft transition functions, providing a much stronger set of constraints on these nonperturbative operators. This work significantly advances our understanding of quarkonium production, particularly in the TMD framework.

Factorizing quarkonium production matrix elements using effective field theory

We use effective field theory to factorize production matrix elements that appear in quarkonium cross sections in NRQCD. By applying a Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation we show that the soft and ultrasoft sectors of NRQCD can be decoupled from the heavy quark and antiquark fields in a hybrid vNRQCD/pNRQCD Lagrangian at leading order in the velocity power counting. This enables us to separate quarkonium production matrix elements in terms of matrix elements of color-singlet composite fields, which we can write as the wavefunction at the origin, and state independent vacuum correlators of chromo-electric and chromo-magnetic gluon fields. This approach verifies powerful connections between the LDMEs of different S-wave vector quarkonium states, originally derived using pNRQCD. Additionally, we find new operator contributions for the color-octet P-wave mechanism, which satisfy a similar set of relationships. Finally, this approach allows us to factorize the production matrix elements that appear in the transverse momentum dependent factorization framework, known as TMD soft transition functions, in terms of state independent gluon correlators. This work restores some universality for TMD production operators and dramatically improves the predictive power of NRQCD in the TMD framework.

The role of the soft scale for $J/\psi$ production in the transverse momentum dependent framework

We use vNRQCD to study power corrections in the ${\rm v}$ expansion due to soft gluon radiation during $J/\psi$ production at small transverse momentum. We categorize four new $J/\psi$ production operators that mediate the transition of perturbatively produced color-octet charm quark/anti-quark pairs to charm quarks in a $^3S_1^{[1]}$ state via soft gluon emission. We then use Soft Collinear Effective Theory and vNRQCD to derive a factorization theorem for $J/\psi$ production in SIDIS in terms of the gluon transverse momentum dependent (TMD) PDFs in the proton and new objects which we call TMD soft transition functions. We show that the TMD soft transition function leads in the ${\rm v}$ power-counting with respect to the color-octet TMD shape functions that have been used in previous studies of $J/\psi$ production at small transverse momentum.

$\psi(2S)$ production in jets using NRQCD

Based on recent data from LHCb, we study $\psi(2S)$ production in jets using non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) in conjunction with the Fragmenting Jet Function (FJF) and Gluon Fragmentation Improved Pythia (GFIP) formalisms. Similar to previous studies of $J/\psi$ production in jets, our results show that these formalisms offer a much better description of data than the default Pythia+NRQCD prediction. We compare and contrast the predictions from the FJF formalism and the GFIP approach. In addition, our results show that the distribution of $\psi(2S)$ in jets is an excellent discriminator to test different predictions for the $\psi(2S)$ LDMEs from various extractions. We find a large disparity between the predictions from three different collaborations, showing that a more precise extraction of the $\psi(2S)$ LDMEs may be necessary.

Probing nonperturbative transverse momentum dependent PDFs with chiral perturbation theory: the $\bar{d}-\bar{u}$ asymmetry

We use chiral perturbation theory to study the long distance regime of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMD PDFs). Chiral corrections to the TMD PDFs are computed from proton to pion/baryon splittings. For consistent power counting, we find that the fraction of the proton's momentum that a pion may carry must be kept small. We make predictions for a $\bar{d}-\bar{u}$ asymmetry in the proton's TMD PDFs and find that the effective theory gives a natural exponential suppression of the TMD PDF at long distances. We then explore the effects that additional nonperturbative physics may have on the TMD $\bar{d}-\bar{u}$ asymmetry.

Transverse Momentum Dependent PDFs in Chiral Effective Theory

We develop a theoretical framework to match transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMD PDFs) onto chiral effective theory operators. In this framework the TMD PDF is expressed as a convolution of TMD hadronic distribution functions, which describe fluctuations of initial states into intermediate hadrons in chiral perturbation theory, and short distance matching coefficients, which are the TMD PDFs of intermediate hadrons in the chiral limit. The various limits of the matching condition are explored and an operator product expansion is applied to the high energy TMD matching coefficients, allowing them to be written in terms of the collinear valence PDFs of intermediate hadrons. As an example, we calculate the isovector TMD hadronic distribution functions for the proton at leading order in the chiral expansion.

Polarized $J/ψ$ production in semi-inclusive DIS at large $Q^2$: Comparing quark fragmentation and photon-gluon fusion

We compare the relative importance of different mechanisms for polarized $J/ψ$ production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes at large $Q^2$. The transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework and nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics are used to study the leading contributions from light quark fragmentation to polarized $J/ψ$, and compared to direct production via photon-gluon fusion, which can proceed through color-singlet as well as color-octet mechanisms. We identify kinematic regimes where light quark fragmentation dominates, allowing for the extraction of the $^3S_1^{[8]}$ matrix element, as well as regimes where photon gluon fusion dominates, suggesting that the gluon TMD parton distribution function can be probed.

Polarized TMD fragmentation functions for $J/ψ$ production

We calculate the matching, at leading order, of the transverse momentum-dependent fragmentation functions (TMDFFs) for light quarks and gluons fragmenting to a $J/ψ$ onto polarized nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) TMDFFs. The NRQCD TMDFFs have an operator-product-expansion in terms of nonperturbative NRQCD production matrix elements. Using the results we obtain, we make predictions for the light quark fragmentation contribution to the production of polarized $J/ψ$ in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) both for unpolarized and longitudinally polarized beams. These results are an important contribution to polarized $J/ψ$ production in SIDIS, and thus are needed for comparison with experiments at the future Electron-Ion Collider.
