Pseudoreflections on Prym Varieties

We show that for every g greater or equal than 5, the locus of Prym varieties in the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension g-1 that possess a pseudoreflection of geometric origin is the union of three different non-empty explicit irreducible families. This is in stark contrast to the loci of Jacobian varieties that possess a pseudoreflection of geometric origin, which is empty for any genus greater than 3. In g=6, a distinguished example of Prym varieties with a pseudoreflection is given by intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds that possess an Eckardt point.

Monodromy of the Prym map and semicanonical pencils in genus 6

The Prym map $\mathcal{P}_6$ in genus 6 is dominant and generically finite of degree 27. When restricted to the divisor of curves with an odd semicanonical pencil $\mathcal{T}_6^o$, it is still generically finite, but of degree strictly smaller. In this paper, we prove that $\mathcal{P}_6$ restricted to $\mathcal{T}_6^o$ is birational and that the monodromy group over the image of $\mathcal{T}_6^o$ is the Weyl group $WD_5$. Thus, there are two other irreducible divisors in the moduli space of Prym curves $\mathcal{R}_6$ and the degree of $\mathcal{P}_6$ restricted to them is 10 and 16. Moreover, we study the geometry of the divisor where $\mathcal{P}_6$ has degree 10.

Geometry of Prym semicanonical pencils and an application to cubic threefolds

In the moduli space $\mathcal{R}_g$ of double étale covers of curves of a fixed genus $g$, the locus formed by covers of curves with a semicanonical pencil consists of two irreducible divisors $\mathcal T^e_g$ and $\mathcal T^o_g$. We study the Prym map on these divisors, which shows significant differences between them and has a rich geometry in the cases of low genus. In particular, the analysis of $\mathcal T^o_5$ has enumerative consequences for lines on cubic threefolds.

Stability conditions in families

We develop a theory of Bridgeland stability conditions and moduli spaces of semistable objects for a family of varieties. Our approach is based on and generalizes previous work by Abramovich-Polishchuk, Kuznetsov, Lieblich, and Piyaratne-Toda. Our notion includes openness of stability, semistable reduction, a support property uniformly across the family, and boundedness of semistable objects. We show that such a structure exists whenever stability conditions are known to exist on the fibers. Our main application is the generalization of Mukai's theory for moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on K3 surfaces to moduli spaces of Bridgeland semistable objects in the Kuznetsov component associated to a cubic fourfold. This leads to the extension of theorems by Addington-Thomas and Huybrechts on the derived category of special cubic fourfolds, to a new proof of the integral Hodge conjecture, and to the construction of an infinite series of unirational locally complete families of polarized hyperkähler manifolds of K3 type. Other applications include the deformation-invariance of Donaldson-Thomas invariants counting Bridgeland stable objects on Calabi-Yau threefolds, and a method for constructing stability conditions on threefolds via degeneration.

Stability conditions on Kuznetsov components

We introduce a general method to induce Bridgeland stability conditions on semiorthogonal components of triangulated categories. In particular, we prove the existence of Bridgeland stability conditions on the Kuznetsov component of the derived category of Fano threefolds and of cubic fourfolds. As an application, in the appendix, written jointly with Xiaolei Zhao, we give a variant of the proof of the Torelli theorem for cubic fourfolds by Huybrechts and Rennemo.

Chern degree functions

We introduce Chern degree functions for complexes of coherent sheaves on a polarized surface, which encode information given by stability conditions on the boundary of the $(α, β)$-plane. We prove that these functions extend to continuous real valued functions and we study their differentiability in terms of stability. For abelian surfaces, Chern degree functions coincide with the cohomological rank functions defined by Jiang-Pareschi. We illustrate in some geometrical situations a general strategy to compute these functions.

Stability of syzygy bundles on abelian varieties

We prove that the kernel of the evaluation morphism of global sections - namely the syzygy bundle - of a sufficiently ample line bundle on an abelian variety is stable. This settles a conjecture of Ein-Lazarsfeld-Mustopa, in the case of abelian varieties.

ACM bundles on cubic fourfolds containing a plane

We study ACM bundles on cubic fourfolds containing a plane exploiting the geometry of the associated quadric fibration and Kuznetsov's treatment of their bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves. More precisely, we recover the K3 surface naturally associated to the fourfold as a moduli space of Gieseker stable ACM bundles of rank four.

Generalized twisted cubics on a cubic fourfold as a moduli space of stable objects

We revisit the work of Lehn-Lehn-Sorger-van Straten on twisted cubic curves in a cubic fourfold not containing a plane in terms of moduli spaces. We show that the blow-up $Z'$ along the cubic of the irreducible holomorphic symplectic eightfold $Z$, described by the four authors, is isomorphic to an irreducible component of a moduli space of Gieseker stable torsion sheaves or rank three torsion free sheaves. For a very general such cubic fourfold, we show that $Z$ is isomorphic to a connected component of a moduli space of tilt-stable objects in the derived category and to a moduli space of Bridgeland stable objects in the Kuznetsov component. Moreover, the contraction between $Z'$ and $Z$ is realized as a wall-crossing in tilt-stability. Finally, $Z$ is birational to an irreducible component of Gieseker stable aCM bundles of rank six.

Rational cohomology tori

We study normal compact Kähler spaces whose rational cohomology ring is isomorphic to that of a complex torus. We call them rational cohomology tori. We classify, up to dimension three, those with rational singularities. We then give constraints on the degree of the Albanese morphism and the number of simple factors of the Albanese variety for rational cohomology tori of general type (hence projective) with rational singularities. Their properties are related to the birational geometry of smooth projective varieties of general type, maximal Albanese dimension, and with vanishing holomorphic Euler characteristic. We finish with the construction of series of examples.

ACM bundles on cubic threefolds

We study ACM bundles on cubic threefolds by using derived category techniques. We prove that the moduli space of stable Ulrich bundles of any rank is always non-empty by showing that it is birational to a moduli space of semistable torsion sheaves on the projective plane endowed with the action of a Clifford algebra. We describe this birational isomorphism via wall-crossing in the space of Bridgeland stability conditions, in the example of instanton sheaves of minimal charge.

Schottky via the punctual Hilbert scheme

We show that a smooth projective curve of genus $g$ can be reconstructed from its polarized Jacobian $(X, Θ)$ as a certain locus in the Hilbert scheme $\mathrm{Hilb}^d(X)$, for $d=3$ and for $d=g+2$, defined by geometric conditions in terms of the polarization $Θ$. The result is an application of the Gunning--Welters trisecant criterion and the Castelnuovo--Schottky theorem by Pareschi--Popa and Grushevsky, and its scheme theoretic extension by the authors.

Characterization of products of theta divisors

We study products of irreducible theta divisors from two points of view. On the one hand, we characterize them as normal subvarieties of abelian varieties such that a desingularization has holomorphic Euler characteristic 1. On the other hand, we identify them up to birational equivalence among all varieties of maximal Albanese dimension. We also describe the structure of maximal Albanese dimension varieties X with holomorphic Euler characteristic 1 and irregularity 2dim X-1.

Generic Vanishing Index and the Birationality of the Bicanonical Map of Irregular Varieties

We prove that any smooth complex projective variety with generic vanishing index bigger or equal than 2 has birational bicanonical map. Therefore, if X is a smooth complex projective variety X with maximal Albanese dimension and non-birational bicanonical map, then the Albanese image of X is fibered by subvarieties of codimension at most 1 of an abelian subvariety of Alb X.

Theta-duality on Prym varieties and a Torelli Theorem

Let p:C' -> C be an unramified double covering of irreducible smooth curves and let P be the attached Prym variety. We prove the schematic theta-dual equalities in the Prym variety T(C')=V^2 and T(V^2)=C', where V^2 is the Brill-Noether locus of P associated to p considered by Welters. As an application we prove a Torelli Theorem analogous to the fact that the g-th symmetric product of a curve D of genus g determines the curve.

Finite subschemes of abelian varieties and the Schottky problem

The Castelnuovo-Schottky theorem of Pareschi-Popa characterizes Jacobians, among indecomposable principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension g, by the existence of g+2 points in general position with respect to the principal polarization, but special with respect to twice the polarization, and furthermore states that such collections of points must be contained in an Abel-Jacobi curve. Building on the ideas in the original paper, we give here a self contained, scheme theoretic proof of the theorem, extending it to finite, possibly nonreduced subschemes.

On the bicanonical map of irregular varieties

From the point of view of uniform bounds for the birationality of pluricanonical maps, irregular varieties of general type and maximal Albanese dimension behave similarly to curves. In fact Chen-Hacon showed that, at least when their holomorphic Euler characteristic is positive, the tricanonical map of such varieties is always birational. In this paper we study the bicanonical map. We consider the natural subclass of varieties of maximal Albanese dimension formed by primitive varieties of Albanese general type. We prove that the only such varieties with non-birational bicanonical map are the natural higher-dimensional generalization to this context of curves of genus 2: varieties birationally equivalent to the theta-divisor of an indecomposable principally polarized abelian variety. The proof is based on the (generalized) Fourier-Mukai transform.
