Poisson genericity in numeration systems with exponentially mixing probabilities

We define Poisson genericity for infinite sequences in any finite or countable alphabet with an invariant exponentially-mixing probability measure. A sequence is Poisson generic if the number of occurrences of blocks of symbols asymptotically follows a Poisson law as the block length increases. We prove that almost all sequences are Poisson generic. Our result generalizes Peres and Weiss' theorem about Poisson genericity of integral bases numeration systems. In particular, we obtain that their continued fraction expansions for almost all real numbers are Poisson generic.

Representations of Yokonuma--Hecke algebras

The Iwahori--Hecke and Yokonuma--Hecke algebras have played crucial roles in algebraic combinatorics and the representation theory of finite groups. In this work, we use classical results from representation theory to compute the character values of the Yokonuma--Hecke algebra at $w_{0}$ and $w_{0}^{2}$, where $w_{0}$ denotes the element of maximal length in the corresponding Weyl group.

De Bruijn Sequences with Minimum Discrepancy

The discrepancy of a binary string is the maximum (absolute) difference between the number of ones and the number of zeroes over all possible substrings of the given binary string. In this note we determine the minimal discrepancy that a binary de Bruijn sequence of order $n$ can achieve, which is $n$. This was an open problem until now. We give an algorithm that constructs a binary de Bruijn sequence with minimal discrepancy. A slight modification of this algorithm deals with arbitrary alphabets and yields de Bruijn sequences of order $n$ with discrepancy at most $1$ above the trivial lower bound $n$.

On extremal factors of de Bruijn-like graphs

In 1972 Mykkeltveit proved that the maximum number of vertex-disjoint cycles in the de Bruijn graphs of order $n$ is attained by the pure cycling register rule, as conjectured by Golomb. We generalize this result to the tensor product of the de Bruijn graph of order $n$ and a simple cycle of size $k$, when $n$ divides $k$ or vice versa. We also develop counting formulae for a large family of cycling register rules, including the linear register rules proposed by Golomb.

Determinants of matrices related to the Pascal triangle

In this note we prove an assertion made by M. Levin in 1999: the Pascal matrix modulo 2 has the property that each of the square sub-matrices laying on the upper border or on the left border has determinants, computed in $\mathbb{Z}$, equal to 1 or -1.

Poisson generic sequences

Years ago, Zeev Rudnick defined the Poisson generic real numbers by counting the number of occurrences of long blocks of digits in the initial segments of the expansions of the real numbers in a fixed integer base. Peres and Weiss proved that almost all real numbers, with respect to Lebesgue measure, are Poisson generic, but they did not publish their proof. In this note first we transcribe Peres and Weiss' proof and then we show that there are computable Poisson generic instances and that all Martin-Löf random real numbers are Poisson generic.

Hardy space of translated Dirichlet series

We study the Hardy space of translated Dirichlet series $\mathcal{H}_{+}$. It consists on those Dirichlet series $\sum a_n n^{-s}$ such that for some (equivalently, every) $1 \leq p < \infty$, the translation $\sum{a_{n}}n^{-(s+\frac{1}σ)}$ belongs to the Hardy space $\mathcal{H}^{p}$ for every $σ>0$. We prove that this set, endowed with the topology induced by the seminorms $\left\{\Vert\cdot\Vert_{2,k}\right\}_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ (where $\Vert\sum{a_{n}n^{-s}}\Vert_{2,k}$ is defined as $\big\Vert\sum{a_n n^{-(s+\frac{1}{k})}} \big\Vert_{\mathcal{H}^{2}}$), is a Fréchet space which is Schwartz and non nuclear. Moreover, the Dirichlet monomials $\{n^{-s}\}_{n \in \mathbb N}$ are an unconditional Schauder basis of $\mathcal H_+$. In the spirit of Gordon and Hedenmalm's work, we completely characterize the composition operator on the Hardy space of translated Dirichlet series. Moreover, we study the superposition operators on $\mathcal{H}_{+}$ and show that every polynomial defines an operator of this kind. We present certain sufficient conditions on the coefficients of an entire function to define a superposition operator. Relying on number theory techniques we exhibit some examples which do not provide superposition operators. We finally look at the action of the differentiation and integration operators on these spaces.

Secretary Problem with quality-based payoff

We consider a variant of the classical Secretary Problem. In this setting, the candidates are ranked according to some exchangeable random variable and the quest is to maximize the expected quality of the chosen aspirant. We find an upper bound for the optimal hiring rule, present examples showing it is sharp, and recover the classical case, among other results.
