Heights of complete intersections in toric varieties

The height of a toric variety and that of its hypersurfaces can be expressed in convex-analytic terms as an adelic sum of mixed integrals of their roof functions and duals of their Ronkin functions. Here we extend these results to the $2$-codimensional situation by presenting a limit formula predicting the typical height of the intersection of two hypersurfaces on a toric variety. More precisely, we prove that the height of the intersection cycle of two effective divisors translated by a strict sequence of torsion points converges to an adelic sum of mixed integrals of roof and duals of Ronkin functions. This partially confirms a previous conjecture of the authors about the average height of families of complete intersections in toric varieties.

Closing the gap around the essential minimum of height functions with linear programming

For many common height functions, it is notoriously hard to compute the essential minimum. Nevertheless there are two classical methods, one giving lower bounds and the other giving upper bounds. In this paper, we show that the two methods are actually dual to each other in the sense of linear programming. The main theorem is that they satisfy strong duality, which closes the gap around the essential minimum from both ends. As applications we prove that this essential minimum can be realized by a generic sequence of algebraic integers, and that if the associated Green function is computable then this essential minimum is a computable real number.

Kähler-Einstein toric submanifolds of the projective space

We show that the Kähler-Einstein metrics on the four families of examples of symmetric toric Fano manifolds presented by Batyrev and Selivanova cannot be realized as metrics induced by immersions into projective spaces equipped with Fubini-Study metrics. We obtain a similar conclusion for the non-symmetric examples discovered by Nill and Paffenholz. A consequence is that a centrally symmetric toric Fano manifold admits a Kähler-Einstein metric induced by a projective immersion if and only if it is a product of projective lines. These results provide evidence for a broader conjecture characterizing which Kähler-Einstein metrics can be induced by projective immersions.

Approximation of adelic divisors and equidistribution of small points

We study the asymptotic distribution of the Galois orbits of generic sequences of algebraic points of small height in a projective variety over a number field. Our main result is a generalization of Yuan's equidistribution theorem that applies to heights for which Zhang's lower bound for the essential minimum is not necessarily an equality. It extends to all projective varieties a theorem of Burgos Gil, Philippon, Rivera-Letelier and the second author for toric varieties. It also applies to sums of canonical heights for an algebraic dynamical system, and in particular it recovers Kühne's semiabelian equidistribution theorem. We also generalize previous work of Chambert-Loir and Thuillier to obtain new logarithmic equidistribution results. Finally we extend our main result to the quasi-projective setting recently introduced by Yuan and Zhang.

Limit heights and special values of the Riemann zeta function

We study the distribution of the height of the intersection between the projective line defined by the linear polynomial $x_{0}+x_{1}+x_{2}$ and its translate by a torsion point. We show that for a strict sequence of torsion points, the corresponding heights converge to a real number that is a rational multiple of a quotient of special values of the Riemann zeta function. We also determine the range of these heights, characterize the extremal cases, and study their limit for sequences of torsion points that are strict in proper algebraic subgroups. In addition, we interpret our main result from the viewpoint of Arakelov geometry, showing that for a strict sequence of torsion points the limit of the corresponding heights coincides with an Arakelov height of the cycle of the projective plane over the integers defined by the same linear polynomial. This is a particular case of a conjectural asymptotic version of the arithmetic Bézout theorem. Using the interplay between arithmetic and convex objects from the Arakelov geometry of toric varieties, we show that this Arakelov height can be expressed as the mean of a piecewise linear function on the amoeba of the projective line, which in turn can be computed as the aforementioned real number.

Convex analysis on polyhedral spaces

We introduce notions of concavity for functions on balanced polyhedral spaces, and we show that concave functions on such spaces satisfy several strong continuity properties.

Factorization of bivariate sparse polynomials

We prove a function field analogue of a conjecture of Schinzel on the factorization of univariate polynomials over the rationals. We derive from it a finiteness theorem for the irreducible factorizations of the bivariate Laurent polynomials in families with fixed set of complex coefficients and varying exponents. Roughly speaking, this result shows that the truly bivariate irreducible factors of these sparse Laurent polynomials, are also sparse. The proofs are based on a variant of the toric Bertini's theorem due to Zannier and Fuchs, Mantova and Zannier.

An arithmetic Bernštein-Kušnirenko inequality

We present an upper bound for the height of the isolated zeros in the torus of a system of Laurent polynomials over an adelic field satisfying the product formula. This upper bound is expressed in terms of the mixed integrals of the local roof functions associated to the chosen height function and to the system of Laurent polynomials. We also show that this bound is close to optimal in some families of examples. This result is an arithmetic analogue of the classical Bernštein-Kušnirenko theorem. Its proof is based on arithmetic intersection theory on toric varieties.

Quantitative equidistribution of Galois orbits of small points in the N-dimensional torus

We present a quantitative version of Bilu's theorem on the limit distribution of Galois orbits of sequences of points of small height in the $N$-dimensional algebraic torus. Our result gives, for a given point, an explicit bound for the discrepancy between its Galois orbit and the uniform distribution on the compact subtorus, in terms of the height and the generalized degree of the point.

The distribution of Galois orbits of points of small height in toric varieties

We address the distribution properties of points of small height on proper toric varieties and applications to the related Bogomolov property. We introduce the notion of monocritical toric metrized divisor and we prove that equidistribution occurs for every generic, small sequence with respect to a toric metrized divisor, for every place if and only if the divisor is monocritical. Furthermore, when this is the case, the limit measure is a translate of the natural measure on the compact torus sitting in the principal orbit of the ambient toric variety. We also study the $v$-adic modulus distribution of Galois orbits of small points. We characterize, in terms of the given toric semipositive metrized divisor, the cluster measures of $v$-adic valuations of Galois orbits of generic small sequences. The Bogomolov property now says that a subvariety of the principal orbit of a proper toric variety that has the same essential minimum than the toric variety with respect to a monocritical toric metrized divisor, must be a translate of a subtorus. We also give several examples, including a non-monocritical divisor for which the Bogomolov property does not hold.

Quantitative equidistribution for the solutions of systems of sparse polynomial equations

For a system of Laurent polynomials f_1,..., f_n \in C[x_1^{\pm1},..., x_n^{\pm1}] whose coefficients are not too big with respect to its directional resultants, we show that the solutions in the algebraic n-th dimensional complex torus of the system of equations f_1=\dots=f_n=0, are approximately equidistributed near the unit polycircle. This generalizes to the multivariate case a classical result due to Erdos and Turan on the distribution of the arguments of the roots of a univariate polynomial. We apply this result to bound the number of real roots of a system of Laurent polynomials, and to study the asymptotic distribution of the roots of systems of Laurent polynomials with integer coefficients, and of random systems of Laurent polynomials with complex coefficients.

Arithmetic geometry of toric varieties. Metrics, measures and heights

We show that the height of a toric variety with respect to a toric metrized line bundle can be expressed as the integral over a polytope of a certain adelic family of concave functions. To state and prove this result, we study the Arakelov geometry of toric varieties. In particular, we consider models over a discrete valuation ring, metrized line bundles, and their associated measures and heights. We show that these notions can be translated in terms of convex analysis, and are closely related to objects like polyhedral complexes, concave functions, real Monge-Ampère measures, and Legendre-Fenchel duality. We also present a closed formula for the integral over a polytope of a function of one variable composed with a linear form. This allows us to compute the height of toric varieties with respect to some interesting metrics arising from polytopes. We also compute the height of toric projective curves with respect to the Fubini-Study metric, and of some toric bundles.

When do the recession cones of a polyhedral complex form a fan?

We study the problem of when the collection of the recession cones of a polyhedral complex forms also a complex. We exhibit an example showing that this is no always the case. We also show that if the support of the given polyhedral complex satisfies a Minkowski-Weyl type condition, then the answer is positive. As a consequence, we obtain a classification theorem for proper toric schemes over a discrete valuation ring in terms of complete strongly convex rational polyhedral complexes.
