Probing GPDs in exclusive electroproduction of dijets

We summarize the formalism for calculating the exclusive dijet production in $e p \to e^{\prime} jj p$ in collinear QCD factorization, using generalized parton distributions as the soft hadronic input modeled in the double distribution approach. We include all leading-order contributions coming from light sea and valence quark exchanges, and gluon exchanges for both light quark-antiquark ($q\bar{q}$) production and also the heavy $c\bar{c}$ final state. We present results for several differential distributions for the cross section evaluated over a broad region of phase space, covering a wide range of inelasticity and photon virtuality. The gluon and sea contributions exhibit similar shapes, whereas the valence contribution, though relatively small, shows a markedly different behavior. The latter becomes particularly noticeable at large $x_{\mathbb{P}}$, a kinematic region not explored at HERA, but potentially accessible in future measurements at the Electron Ion Collider. This requires further feasibility studies. We also present the azimuthal angle modulation between the leptonic and the outgoing dijet planes for the general case, as well as for the ZEUS kinematic region where we see reasonable agreement with the data for diffractive deep inelastic scattering parameter $β\gtrsim 0.4$.

Photoinduced inclusive cross sections in hadronic collisions at the LHC

We discuss inclusive electromagnetic dissociation processes in proton--proton ($pp$) and proton--nucleus ($pA$) scattering at the LHC where one or both of the protons dissociate. These processes which involve the exchange of a virtual photon in the $t$--channel are calculable in terms of deep inelastic structure functions (virtual photoabsorption cross sections). For the $pA \to XA$ reaction there emerges the possibility of measuring the total photoabsorption cross section on the proton at very high energies.

Probing gluon GTMDs of the proton in deep inelastic diffractive dijet production at HERA

We calculate several differential distributions for diffractive dijets production in $e p \to e' {\rm jet \, jet} p$ in the pQCD dipole approach using off diagonal unintegrated gluon distributions (GTMDs). Different models from the literature are used. We concentrate on the contribution from exclusive $q \bar q$ dijets. Results of our calculations are compared to H1 and ZEUS data, including specific experimental cuts in our calculations. In general, except of one GTMD, our results are below the HERA data. The considered mechanism is expected to gives a sizeable contribution to the ZEUS data, while it is negligible in the kinematics of the H1 measurement. This is in contrast to recent results from the literature where the normalization was adjusted to some selected distributions of H1 collaboration and no agreement with other observables was checked. The ZEUS data provide stricter limitations on the GTMDs than the H1 data. We conclude, based on comparison to different observables, that the calculated cross sections are only a small fraction of the measured ones which contain probably also processes with pomeron remnant. Alternatively the experimental data could be explained by inclusion of $q \bar q g$ component. We present also azimuthal correlations between the sum and the difference of dijet transverse momenta. The cuts on transverse momenta of jets generate corresponding azimuthal correlations which can be misidentified as due to elliptic gluon distributions.

Probing proton structure with $c \bar c$ correlations in ultraperipheral $pA$ collisions

We study the exclusive diffractive $c \bar c$ photoproduction in ultraperipheral $pA$ collisions. The formalism makes use of off-diagonal generalizations of the unintegrated gluon distribution, the so-called generalized transverse momentum dependent distributions (GTMDs). We present two different formulations. The first one is based directly on gluon GTMD parametrizations in momentum space. Another option is the calculation of the GTMD as a Fourier transform of the dipole-nucleon scattering amplitude $N(Y,\vec{r}_{\perp},\vec{b}_{\perp})$. The latter approach requires some extra regularization discussed in the paper. Different dipole amplitudes from the literature are used. Compared to previous calculations in the literature, we integrate over the full phase space and therefore cross sections for realistic conditions are obtained. We present distributions in rapidity of $c$ or $\bar c$, transverse momentum of the $c \bar c$ pair, four-momentum transfer squared as well as the azimuthal correlation between a sum and a difference of the $c$ and $\bar c$ transverse momenta. The azimuthal correlations are partially due to the so-called elliptic gluon Wigner distribution. Different models lead to different modulations in the azimuthal angle. The modulations are generally smaller than 5%. They depend on the range of transverse momentum selected for the calculation.

Unintegrated gluon distributions from the color dipole cross section in the BGK saturation model

We evaluate the unintegrated gluon distribution of the proton starting from a parametrization of the color dipole cross section including DGLAP evolution and saturation effects. To this end, we perform the Fourier-Bessel transform of $σ(x,r)/α(r)$. At large transverse momentum of gluons we match the so-obtained distribution to the logarithmic derivative of the collinear gluon distribution. We check our approach by calculating the proton structure function $F_L(x,Q^2)$ finding good agreement with HERA data.

Production of $e^{+} e^{-}$ in proton-lead collision: photon-photon fusion

We analyze the photon-initiated processes for production of $ e ^ + e ^- $ pairs in proton-nucleus collisions at LHC energy, taking into account both elastic processes and proton dissociations in the low-mass region (LMR) and intermediate-mass region (IMR) as defined by the ALICE collaboration. The calculations are performed within the $k_{\rm T}$-factorisation approach, including transverse momenta of intermediate photons. We discuss several differential distributions in invariant mass of both the leptons $M_{ll}$, pair rapidity $Y_{ll}$ and transverse momenta of the lepton pair $p_{t,ll}$. In addition, we present the two-dimensional distributions in $\log_{10} x_{Bj}$ and $\log_{10} Q^{2}$ and ($\log_{10} W,\log_{10} Q^{2}$) the arguments of the deep-inelastic structure functions. All presented results were obtained with modern parametrizations of proton structure functions. Limiting to small invariant masses of dielectrons one tests structure functions in the nonperturbative region of small $Q^2$ and/or small $W$. We quantify difference for different parametrizations from the literature.

Semiexclusive dilepton production in proton-proton collisions with one forward proton measurement at the LHC

We discuss photon-photon fusion mechanisms of dilepton production in proton-proton collisions with rapidity gap in the main detector and one forward proton in the forward proton detectors. This is relevant for the LHC measurements by ATLAS+AFP and CMS+PPS. Transverse momenta of the intermediate photons are taken into account and photon fluxes are expressed in terms of proton electromagnetic form factors and structure functions. Differential distributions in $ξ_{1/2}$, $M_{ll}$, $Y_{ll}$, $p_{t,ll}$, $M_R$ %pamietac wyjasnic M_R w tekscie are shown and the competition of different mechanisms is discussed. Both double-elastic and single-dissociative processes are included in the analysis. Different parametrizations of the structure functions are used. We discuss also mechanism with one forward $Δ^+$ isobar, or other proton resonances in the final state. The role of several cuts is studied. We also use SuperChic generator and compare corresponding results to the results of our codes. The soft rapidity gap survival factor is calculated for each contribution separately. The gap survival factor for the single-dissociative mechanism due to minijet emission into the main detector is calculated in addition. It depends on the type of contribution (fully elastic, single dissociation, double dissociation). The soft rapidity gap survival factor for the case of single proton measurement is significantly smaller than that for the inclusive case (no proton measurement). We find only weak dependence on the invariant mass of the dilepton system as well as the lepton pair transverse momentum and sizeable dependence on the pair rapidity. The latter effect is rather difficult to identify experimentally.

Production of heavy particle pairs via photon-photon processes at the LHC

We discuss production of $W^+ W^-$ pairs and $t \bar t$ quark-antiquark pairs in proton-proton collisions induced by two-photon fusion including transverse momenta of incoming photons. The unintegrated inelastic fluxes (related to proton dissociation) of photons are calculated based on modern parametrizations of deep inelastic structure functions in a broad range of $x$ and $Q^2$. We focus on processes with single and double proton dissociation. Highly excited remnant systems hadronise producing particles that can be vetoed in the calorimeter. We calculate associated gap survival factors. The gap survival factors depend on the process, mass of the remnant system and collision energy. The rapidity gap survival factor due to remnant fragmentation for double dissociative (DD) collisions is smaller than that for single dissociative (SD) process. We observe approximate factorisation: $S_{R,DD} \approx S_{R,SD}^2$ when imposing rapidity veto. For the $W^+W^-$ final state, the remnant fragmentation leads to a taming of the cross section when the rapidity gap requirement is imposed. Also for $t \bar t$ quark-antiquark pairs such a condition reverses the hierarchy observed for the case when such condition is taken into account. Our results imply that for the production of such heavy objects as $t$ quark and $\bar t$ antiquark the virtuality of the photons attached to the dissociative system are very large ($Q^2 <$ 10$^{4}$ GeV$^2$). A similar effect is observed for the $W^+ W^-$ system.

Rapidity gap survival factors caused by remnant fragmentation for $W^+ W^-$ pair production via $γ^*γ^* \to W^+ W^-$ subprocess with photon transverse momenta

We calculate the cross section for $p p \to W^{+} W^-$ in the recently developed $k_{\rm T}$-factorisation approach, including transverse momenta of the virtual photons. We focus on processes with single and double proton dissociation. First we discuss the gap survival on the parton level as due to the emission of extra jet. Both the role of valence and sea contributions is discussed. The hadronisation of proton remnants is performed with {PYTHIA 8} string fragmentation model, assuming a simple quark-diquark model for proton. Highly excited remnant systems hadronise producing particles that can be vetoed in the calorimeter. We calculate associated effective gap survival factors. The gap survival factors depend on the process, mass of the remnant system and collision energy. The rapidity gap survival factor due to remnant fragmentation for double dissociative (DD) collisions ($S_{R,DD}$) is smaller than that for single dissociative (SD) process ($S_{R,SD}$). We observe the approximate factorisation $S_{R,DD} \approx (S_{R,SD})^2$, however it is expected that this property will be violated by soft rescattering effects not accounted for in this letter.

Production of $t\bar t$ pairs via $γγ$ fusion with photon transverse momenta and proton dissociation

We discuss the production of $t\bar t$ quark-antiquark pairs in proton-proton collisions via the $γγ$ fusion mechanism. We include topologies in which both protons stay intact or one or even both of them undergo dissociation. The calculations are performed within the $k_{\rm T}$-factorisation approach, including transverse momenta of intermediate photons. Photon fluxes associated to inelastic (dissociative) processes are calculated based on modern parameterisations of proton structure functions. We find an integrated cross section of about 2.36 fb at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV for all contributions. The cross section for the fully elastic process is the smallest. Inelastic contributions are significantly reduced when a veto on outgoing jets is imposed. We present several differential distributions in rapidity and transverse momenta of single $t$ or $\bar t$ quarks/antiquarks as well as distributions in invariant mass of both the $t\bar t$ and masses of dissociated systems. A few two-dimensional distributions are presented in addition.

Diffractive processes at the LHC within $k_t$ -factorization approach

We discuss the single diffractive production of $c \bar c$ pairs and charmed mesons at the LHC. In addition to standard collinear approach, for a first time we propose a $k_t$-factorization approach to the diffractive processes. The transverse momentum dependent (the unintegrated diffractive parton distributions) in proton are obtained with the help of the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin prescription where collinear diffractive PDFs are used as input. In this calculation the transverse momentum of the pomeron is neglected with respect to transverse momentum of partons entering the hard process. The results of the new approach are compared with those of the standard collinear one. Significantly larger cross sections are obtained in the $k_t$-factorization approach where some part of higher-order effects is effectively included. Some correlation observables, like azimuthal angle correlation between $c$ and $\bar c$, and $c \bar c$ pair transverse momentum distribution were obtained for the first time.
