Accidental Inflation in the Landscape

We study some aspects of fine tuning in inflationary scenarios within string theory flux compactifications and, in particular, in models of accidental inflation. We investigate the possibility that the apparent fine-tuning of the low energy parameters of the theory needed to have inflation can be generically obtained by scanning the values of the fluxes over the landscape. Furthermore, we find that the existence of a landscape of eternal inflation in this model provides us with a natural theory of initial conditions for the inflationary period in our vacuum. We demonstrate how these two effects work in a small corner of the landscape associated with the complex structure of the Calabi-Yau manifold P^4_[1,1,1,6,9] by numerically investigating the flux vacua of a reduced moduli space. This allows us to obtain the distribution of observable parameters for inflation in this mini-landscape directly from the fluxes.

Kahler Moduli Inflation Revisited

We perform a detailed numerical analysis of inflationary solutions in Kahler moduli of type IIB flux compactifications. We show that there are inflationary solutions even when all the fields play an important role in the overall shape of the scalar potential. Moreover, there exists a direction of attraction for the inflationary trajectories that correspond to the constant volume direction. This basin of attraction enables the system to have an island of stability in the set of initial conditions. We provide explicit examples of these trajectories, compute the corresponding tilt of the density perturbations power spectrum and show that they provide a robust prediction of n_s approximately 0.96 for 60 e-folds of inflation.

Globally and locally supersymmetric effective theories for light fields

We reconsider the general question of how to characterize most efficiently the low-energy effective theory obtained by integrating out heavy modes in globally and locally supersymmetric theories. We consider theories with chiral and vector multiplets and identify the conditions under which an approximately supersymmetric low-energy effective theory can exist. These conditions translate into the requirements that all the derivatives, fermions and auxiliary fields should be small in units of the heavy mass scale. They apply not only to the matter sector, but also to the gravitational one if present, and imply in that case that the gravitino mass should be small. We then show how to determine the unique exactly supersymmetric theory that approximates this effective theory at the lowest order in the counting of derivatives, fermions and auxiliary fields, by working both at the superfield level and with component fields. As a result we give a simple prescription for integrating out heavy superfields in an algebraic and manifestly supersymmetric way, which turns out to hold in the same form both for globally and locally supersymmetric theories, meaning that the process of integrating out heavy modes commutes with the process of switching on gravity. More precisely, for heavy chiral and vector multiplets one has to impose respectively stationarity of the superpotential and the Kahler potential.

Constructing de Sitter vacua in no-scale string models without uplifting

We develop a method for constructing metastable de Sitter vacua in N=1 supergravity models describing the no-scale volume moduli sector of Calabi-Yau string compactifications. We consider both heterotic and orientifold models. Our main guideline is the necessary condition for the existence of metastable vacua coming from the Goldstino multiplet, which constrains the allowed scalar geometries and supersymmetry-breaking directions. In the simplest non-trivial case where the volume is controlled by two moduli, this condition simplifies and turns out to be fully characterised by the intersection numbers of the Calabi-Yau manifold. We analyse this case in detail and show that once the metastability condition is satisfied it is possible to reconstruct in a systematic way the local form of the superpotential that is needed to stabilise all the fields. We apply then this procedure to construct some examples of models where the superpotential takes a realistic form allowed by flux backgrounds and gaugino condensation effects, for which a viable vacuum arises without the need of invoking corrections to the Kahler potential breaking the no-scale property or uplifting terms. We finally discuss the prospects of constructing potentially realistic models along these lines.

No metastable de Sitter vacua in N=2 supergravity with only hypermultiplets

We study the stability of vacua with spontaneously broken supersymmetry in N=2 supergravity theories with only hypermultiplets. Focusing on the projection of the scalar mass matrix along the sGoldstino directions, we are able to derive a universal upper bound on the lowest mass eigenvalue. This bound only depends on the gravitino mass and the cosmological constant, but not on the details of the quaternionic manifold spanned by the scalar fields. Comparing with the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound shows that metastability requires the cosmological constant to be smaller than a certain negative critical value. Therefore, only AdS vacua with a sufficiently negative cosmological constant can be stable, while Minkowski and dS vacua necessarily have a tachyonic direction.

Constraints on modular inflation in supergravity and string theory

We perform a general algebraic analysis on the possibility of realising slow-roll inflation in the moduli sector of string models. This problem turns out to be very closely related to the characterisation of models admitting metastable vacua with non-negative cosmological constant. In fact, we show that the condition for the existence of viable inflationary trajectories is a deformation of the condition for the existence of metastable de Sitter vacua. This condition depends on the ratio between the scale of inflation and the gravitino mass and becomes stronger as this parameter grows. After performing a general study within arbitrary supergravity models, we analyse the implications of our results in several examples. More concretely, in the case of heterotic and orientifold string compactifications on a Calabi-Yau in the large volume limit we show that there may exist fully viable models, allowing both for inflation and stabilisation. Additionally, we show that subleading corrections breaking the no-scale property shared by these models always allow for slow-roll inflation but with an inflationary scale suppressed with respect to the gravitino scale. A scale of inflation larger than the gravitino scale can also be achieved under more restrictive circumstances and only for certain types of compactifications.

de Sitter vacua in no-scale supergravities and Calabi-Yau string models

We perform a general analysis on the possibility of obtaining metastable vacua with spontaneously broken N=1 supersymmetry and non-negative cosmological constant in the moduli sector of string models. More specifically, we study the condition under which the scalar partners of the Goldstino are non-tachyonic, which depends only on the Kahler potential. This condition is not only necessary but also sufficient, in the sense that all of the other scalar fields can be given arbitrarily large positive square masses if the superpotential is suitably tuned. We consider both heterotic and orientifold string compactifications in the large-volume limit and show that the no-scale property shared by these models severely restricts the allowed values for the `sGoldstino' masses in the superpotential parameter space. We find that a positive mass term may be achieved only for certain types of compactifications and specific Goldstino directions. Additionally, we show how subleading corrections to the Kahler potential which break the no-scale property may allow to lift these masses.

Constraints from F and D supersymmetry breaking in general supergravity theories

We study the conditions under which a generic supergravity model involving chiral and vector multiplets can admit vacua with spontaneously broken supersymmetry and realistic cosmological constant. We find that the existence of such viable vacua implies some constraints involving the curvature tensor of the scalar geometry and the charge and mass matrices of the vector fields, and also that the vector of F and D auxiliary fields defining the Goldstino direction is constrained to lie within a certain domain. We illustrate the relevance of these results through some examples and also discuss the implications of our general results on the dynamics of moduli fields in string models. This contribution is based on [1,2,3].

Metastable supergravity vacua with F and D supersymmetry breaking

We study the conditions under which a generic supergravity model involving chiral and vector multiplets can admit viable metastable vacua with spontaneously broken supersymmetry and realistic cosmological constant. To do so, we impose that on the vacuum the scalar potential and all its first derivatives vanish, and derive a necessary condition for the matrix of its second derivatives to be positive definite. We study then the constraints set by the combination of the flatness condition needed for the tuning of the cosmological constant and the stability condition that is necessary to avoid unstable modes. We find that the existence of such a viable vacuum implies a condition involving the curvature tensor for the scalar geometry and the charge and mass matrices for the vector fields. Moreover, for given curvature, charges and masses satisfying this constraint, the vector of F and D auxiliary fields defining the Goldstino direction is constrained to lie within a certain domain. The effect of vector multiplets relative to chiral multiplets is maximal when the masses of the vector fields are comparable to the gravitino mass. When the masses are instead much larger or much smaller than the gravitino mass, the effect becomes small and translates into a correction to the effective curvature. We finally apply our results to some simple classes of examples, to illustrate their relevance.

Constraints for the existence of flat and stable non-supersymmetric vacua in supergravity

We further develop on the study of the conditions for the existence of locally stable non-supersymmetric vacua with vanishing cosmological constant in supergravity models involving only chiral superfields. Starting from the two necessary conditions for flatness and stability derived in a previous paper (which involve the Kahler metric and its Riemann tensor contracted with the supersymmetry breaking auxiliary fields) we show that the implications of these constraints can be worked out exactly not only for factorizable scalar manifolds, but also for symmetric coset manifolds. In both cases, the conditions imply a strong restriction on the Kahler geometry and constrain the vector of auxiliary fields defining the Goldstino direction to lie in a certain cone. We then apply these results to the various homogeneous coset manifolds spanned by the moduli and untwisted matter fields arising in string compactifications, and discuss their implications. Finally, we also discuss what can be said for completely arbitrary scalar manifolds, and derive in this more general case some explicit but weaker restrictions on the Kahler geometry.

Locally stable non-supersymmetric Minkowski vacua in supergravity

We perform a general study about the existence of non-supersymmetric minima with vanishing cosmological constant in supergravity models involving only chiral superfields. We study the conditions under which the matrix of second derivatives of the scalar potential is positive definite. We show that there exist very simple and strong necessary conditions for stability that constrain the Kahler curvature and the ratios of the supersymmetry-breaking auxiliary fields defining the Goldstino direction. We then derive more explicitly the implications of these constraints in the case where the Kahler potential for the supersymmetry-breaking fields is separable into a sum of terms for each of the fields. We also discuss the implications of our general results on the dynamics of moduli fields arising in string compactifications and on the relative sizes of their auxiliary fields, which are relevant for the soft terms of matter fields. We finally comment on how the idea of uplifting a supersymmetric AdS vacuum fits into our general study.

More Pendants for Polya: Two loops in the SU(2) sector

We extend the methods of Spradlin and Volovich to compute the partition function for a conformally-invariant gauge theory on R x S^3 in which the dilatation operator is represented by a spin-chain Hamiltonian acting on pairs of states, not necessarily nearest neighbors. A specific application of this is the two-loop dilatation operator of the planar SU(2) subsector of the N=4 SU(N) super Yang-Mills theory in the large-N limit. We compute the partition function and Hagedorn temperature for this sector to second order in the gauge coupling. The Hagedorn temperature is to be interpreted as giving the exponentially-rising portion of the density of states of the SU(2) sector, which may be a signal of stringy behavior in the dual theory.

Thermodynamics of the localized D2-D6 system

An exact fully-localized extremal supergravity solution for N_2 D2 branes and N_6 D6 branes, which is dual to 3-dimensional supersymmetric SU(N_2) gauge theory with N_6 fundamentals, was found by Cherkis and Hashimoto. In order to consider the thermal properties of the gauge theory we present the non-extremal extension of this solution to first order in an expansion near the core of the D6 branes. We compute the Hawking temperature and the black brane horizon area/entropy. The leading order entropy, which is proportional to N_2^{3/2} N_6^{1/2} T_H^2, is not corrected to first order in the expansion. This result is consistent with the analogous weak-coupling result at the correspondence point N_2 ~ N_6.

Exact Superpotentials, Theories with Flavor and Confining Vacua

In this paper we study some interesting properties of the effective superpotential of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with fundamental matter, with the help of the Dijkgraaf--Vafa proposal connecting supersymmetric gauge theories with matrix models. We find that the effective superpotential for theories with N_f fundamental flavors can be calculated in terms of quantities computed in the pure (N_f=0) gauge theory. Using this property we compute in a remarkably simple way the exact effective superpotential of N=1 supersymmetric theories with fundamental matter and gauge group SU(N_c), at the point in the moduli space where a maximal number of monopoles become massless (confining vacua). We extend the analysis to a generic point of the moduli space, and show how to compute the effective superpotential in this general case.

Prepotential and Instanton Corrections in N=2 Supersymmetric SU(N_1)xSU(N_2) Yang Mills Theories

In this paper we analyse the non-hyperelliptic Seiberg-Witten curves derived from M-theory that encode the low energy solution of N=2 supersymmetric theories with product gauge groups. We consider the case of a SU(N_1)xSU(N_2) gauge theory with a hypermultiplet in the bifundamental representation together with matter in the fundamental representations of SU(N_1) and SU(N_2). By means of the Riemann bilinear relations that hold on the Riemann surface defined by the Seiberg--Witten curve, we compute the logarithmic derivative of the prepotential with respect to the quantum scales of both gauge groups. As an application we develop a method to compute recursively the instanton corrections to the prepotential in a straightforward way. We present explicit formulas for up to third order on both quantum scales. Furthermore, we extend those results to SU(N) gauge theories with a matter hypermultiplet in the symmetric and antisymmetric representation. We also present some non-trivial checks of our results.

Blowup formulae in Donaldson-Witten theory and integrable hierarchies

We investigate blowup formulae in Donaldson-Witten theory with gauge group SU(N), using the theory of hyperelliptic Kleinian functions. We find that the blowup function is a hyperelliptic sigma-function and we describe an explicit procedure to expand it in terms of the Casimirs of the gauge group up to arbitrary order. As a corollary, we obtain a new expression for the contact terms and we show that the correlation functions involving the exceptional divisor are governed by the KdV hierarchy. We also show that, for manifolds of simple type, the blowup function becomes a tau-function for a multisoliton solution.

Remarks on twisted theories with matter

We investigate some aspects of N=2 twisted theories with matter hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. A consistent formulation of these theories on a general four-manifold requires turning on a particular magnetic flux, which we write down explicitly in the case of SU(2k). We obtain the blowup formula and show that the blowup function is given by a hyperelliptic sigma-function with singular characteristic. We compute the contact terms and find, as a corollary, interesting identities between hyperelliptic Theta functions.

Integrable hierarchies in Donaldson-Witten and Seiberg-Witten theories

We review various aspects of integrable hierarchies appearing in N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories. In particular, we show that the blowup function in Donaldson-Witten theory, up to a redefinition of the fast times, is a tau function for a g-gap solution of the KdV hierarchy. In the case of four-manifolds of simple type, instead, the blowup function becomes a tau function corresponding to a multisoliton solution. We obtain a new expression for the contact terms that links these results to the Whitham hierarchy formulation of Seiberg-Witten theories.
