Chewing gums, snakes and candle cakes

The aim of these lecture notes, based on lectures given by the second author at the CIME school in Cetraro, is to illustrate a range of ideas surrounding higher Teichmuller spaces of Riemann surfaces with marked boundaries through explicit and computationally tractable examples. After reviewing the classical Teichmuller space of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces with boundary and its combinatorial description in terms of Thurston shear coordinates on a fat-graph, we explain how the bordered cusped Teichmuller space arises as a confluent limit when two boundary components in the Riemann surface collide via the so-called chewing-gum move giving rise to a candle cake. We then revisit these constructions from the Fock-Goncharov perspective, explaining snake calculus for transport matrices in PSL_n(R) and explain how the chewing gum move is the inverse of amalgamation. Rather than focusing on formal proofs, our goal is to illustrate the underlying theorems and constructions in a concrete and intuitive way.

Decorated Local Systems and Character Varieties

The focus of this paper is the study of the moduli space of representations of fundamental groupoids of surfaces $\Sigma$ with boundaries with values in $G:=GL_n(\mathbb C)$. In absence of marked points on the boundary, this moduli space is realized in many equivalent ways: as the moduli space of linear local systems on $\Sigma$, as the moduli space of representations of the fundamental groupoid $\Pi_1 (\Sigma)$, as the space of monodromy data and as character variety. By adding marked points to the boundary of $\Sigma$ in order to capture irregular singularities, the Betti moduli space has been generalized in several ways by many authors. Although it is clear that these different approaches describe essentially the same spaces of mathematical objects, exactly how they fit together has not yet been established. Motivated by the broader programme of establishing an explicit and conceptually coherent relationship between the existing approaches to the study of the decorated Betti moduli space, in this paper, we develop a categorical framework that allows for a systematic definition of the \dfn{decorated Betti moduli spaces} space, in the presence of higher order poles, designed to specialize to the different points of view encountered in the literature.

Automorphisms of the DAHA of type $\check{C_1}C_1$ and non-symmetric Askey-Wilson functions

In this paper we consider the automorphisms of the double affine Hecke algebra (DAHA) of type $\check{C_1}C_1$ which have a relatively simple action on the generators and on the parameters, notably a symmetry $t_4$ which sends the Askey-Wilson parameters $(a,b,c,d)$ to $(a,b,qd^{-1},qc^{-1})$. We study how these symmetries act on the basic representation and on the symmetric and non-symmetric Askey-Wilson (AW) polynomials and functions. Interestingly $t_4$ maps AW polynomials to functions. We take the rank one case of Stokman's Cherednik kernel for $BC_n$ as the definition of the non-symmetric Askey--Wilson function. From it we derive an expression as a sum of a symmetric and an anti-symmetric term.

Generalized double affine Hecke algebras, their representations, and higher Teichmüller theory

Generalized double affine Hecke algebras (GDAHA) are flat deformations of the group algebras of $2$-dimensional crystallographic groups associated to star-shaped simply laced affine Dynkin diagrams. In this paper, we first construct a functor that sends representations of the $\tilde D_4$-type GDAHA to representations of the $\tilde E_6$-type one for specialised parameters. Then, under no restrictions on the parameters, we construct embeddings of both GDAHAs of type $\tilde D_4$ and $\tilde E_6$ into matrix algebras over quantum cluster $\mathcal{X}$-varieties, thus linking to the theory of higher Teichmüller spaces. For $\tilde E_6$, the two explicit representations we provide over distinct quantum tori are shown to be related by quiver reductions and mutations.

Segre surfaces and geometry of the Painlev\'e equations

In this paper, we consider a six parameter family of affine Segre surfaces embedded in $\mathbb C^6$. For generic values of the parameters, this family is associated to the $q$-difference sixth Painlev\'e equation. We show that different limiting forms of this family give Segre surfaces that are isomorphic as affine varieties to the the monodromy manifolds of each Painlev\'e differential equation.

Isomonodromic deformations: Confluence, Reduction $\&$ Quantisation

In this paper we study the isomonodromic deformations of systems of differential equations with poles of any order on the Riemann sphere as Hamiltonian flows on the product of co-adjoint orbits of the Takiff algebra (i.e. truncated current algebra). Our motivation is to produce confluent versions of the celebrated Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equations and explain how their quasiclassical solution can be expressed via the isomonodromic $τ$-function. In order to achieve this, we study the confluence cascade of $r+ 1$ simple poles to give rise to a singularity of arbitrary Poincaré rank $r$ as a Poisson morphism and explicitly compute the isomonodromic Hamiltonians.

Quantised Painlevé monodromy manifolds, Sklyanin and Calabi-Yau algebras

In this paper we study quantum del Pezzo surfaces belonging to a certain class. In particular we introduce the generalised Sklyanin-Painlevé algebra and characterise its PBW/PHS/Koszul properties. This algebra contains as limiting cases the generalised Sklyanin algebra, Etingof-Ginzburg and Etingof-Oblomkov-Rains quantum del Pezzo and the quantum monodromy manifolds of the Painlevé equations.

The Sigma Form for the PII Hierarchy

In this paper we study the so-called sigma form of the second Painlevé hierarchy. To obtain this form, we use some properties of the Hamiltonian structure of the second Painlevé hierarchy and of the Lenard operator.

Stokes phenomenon arising in the confluence of the Gauss hypergeometric equation

In this paper we study the Gauss and Kummer hypergeometric equations in depth. In particular, we focus on the confluence of two regular singularities of the Gauss hypergeometric equation to produce the Kummer hypergeometric equation with an irregular singularity at infinity. We show how to pass from solutions with power-like behaviour which are analytic in disks, to solutions with exponential behaviour which are analytic in sectors and have divergent asymptotics. We explicitly calculate the Stokes matrices of the confluent system in terms of the monodromy data, specifically the connection matrices, of the original system around the merging singularities.

Dualities in the $q$-Askey scheme and degenerate DAHA

The Askey-Wilson polynomials are a four-parameter family of orthogonal symmetric Laurent polynomials $R_n[z]$ which are eigenfunctions of a second-order $q$-difference operator $L$, and of a second-order difference operator in the variable $n$ with eigenvalue $z +z^{-1}=2x$. Then $L$ and multiplication by $z+z^{-1}$ generate the Askey-Wilson (Zhedanov) algebra. A nice property of the Askey-Wilson polynomials is that the variables $z$ and $n$ occur in the explicit expression in a similar and to some extent exchangeable way. This property is called duality. It returns in the non-symmetric case and in the underlying algebraic structures: the Askey-Wilson algebra and the double affine Hecke algebra (DAHA). In this paper we follow the degeneration of the Askey-Wilson polynomials until two arrows down and in four different situations: for the orthogonal polynomials themselves, for the degenerate Askey-Wilson algebras, for the non-symmetric polynomials and for the (degenerate) DAHA and its representations.

Finite orbits of the pure braid group on the monodromy of the $2$-variable Garnier system

In this paper we show that the $SL_{2}(\mathbb C)$ character variety of the Riemann sphere $Σ_5$ with five boundary components is a $5$-parameter family of affine varieties of dimension $4$. We endow this family of affine varieties with an action of the braid group and classify exceptional finite orbits. This action represents the nonlinear monodromy of the $2$ variable Garnier system and finite orbits correspond to algebraic solutions.

Algebras of quantum monodromy data and decorated character varieties

The Riemann-Hilbert correspondence is an isomorphism between the de Rham moduli space and the Betti moduli space, defined by associating to each Fuchsian system its monodromy representation class. In 1997 Hitchin proved that this map is a symplectomorphism. In this paper, we address the question of what happens to this theory if we extend the de Rham moduli space by allowing connections with higher order poles. In our previous paper arXiv:1511.03851, based on the idea of interpreting higher order poles in the connection as boundary components with bordered cusps (vertices of ideal triangles in the Poincaré metric) on the Riemann surface, we introduced the notion of decorated character variety to generalize the Betti moduli space. This decorated character variety is the quotient of the space of representations of the fundamental groupid of arcs by a product of unipotent Borel sub-groups (one per bordered cusp). Here we prove that this representation space is endowed with a Poisson structure induced by the Fock--Rosly bracket and show that the quotient by unipotent Borel subgroups giving rise to the decorated character variety is a Poisson reduction. We deal with the Poisson bracket and its quantization simultaneously, thus providing a quantisation of the decorated character variety. In the case of dimension 2, we also endow the representation space with explicit Darboux coordinates. We conclude with a conjecture on the extended Riemann-Hilbert correspondence in the case of higher order poles.

Colliding holes in Riemann surfaces and quantum cluster algebras

In this paper, we describe a new type of surgery for non-compact Riemann surfaces that naturally appear when colliding two holes or two sides of the same hole in an orientable Riemann surface with boundary (and possibly orbifold points). As a result of this surgery, bordered cusps appear on the boundary components of the Riemann surface. In Poincaré uniformization, these bordered cusps correspond to ideal triangles in the fundamental domain. We introduce the notion of bordered cusped Teichmüller space and endow it with a Poisson structure, quantization of which is achieved with a canonical quantum ordering. We give a complete combinatorial description of the bordered cusped Teichmüller space by introducing the notion of maximal cusped lamination, a lamination consisting of geodesics arcs between bordered cusps and closed geodesics homotopic to the boundaries such that it triangulates the Riemann surface. We show that each bordered cusp carries a natural decoration, i.e. a choice of a horocycle, so that the lengths of the arcs in the maximal cusped lamination are defined as $λ$-lengths in Thurston--Penner terminology. We compute the Goldman bracket explicitly in terms of these $λ$-lengths and show that the Mapping Class Group acts as a generalized cluster algebra mutation. From the physical point of view, our construction provides an explicit coordinatization of moduli spaces of open/closed string worldsheets and their quantization.

Painlevé monodromy manifolds, decorated character varieties and cluster algebras

In this paper we introduce the concept of decorated character variety for the Riemann surfaces arising in the theory of the Painlevé differential equations. Since all Painlevé differential equations (apart from the sixth one) exhibit Stokes phenomenon, it is natural to consider Riemann spheres with holes and bordered cusps on such holes. The decorated character is defined as complexification of the bordered cusped Teichmüller space introduced in arXiv:1509.07044. We show that the decorated character variety of a Riemann sphere with s holes and n>1 bordered cusps is a Poisson manifold of dimension 3 s+ 2 n-6 and we explicitly compute the Poisson brackets which are naturally of cluster type. We also show how to obtain the confluence procedure of the Painlevé differential equations in geometric terms.

Embedding of the rank 1 DAHA into Mat(2,Tq) and its automorphisms

In this review paper we show how the Cherednik algebra of type $\check{C_1}C_1$ appears naturally as quantisation of the group algebra of the monodromy group associated to the sixth Painlevé equation. This fact naturally leads to an embedding of the Cherednik algebra of type $\check{C_1}C_1$ into $Mat(2,\mathbb T_q)$, i.e. $2\times 2$ matrices with entries in the quantum torus. For $q=1$ this result is equivalent to say that the Cherednik algebra of type $\check{C_1}C_1$ is Azumaya of degree $2$ \cite{O}. By quantising the action of the braid group and of the Okamoto transformations on the monodromy group associated to the sixth Painlevé equation we study the automorphisms of the Cherednik algebra of type $\check{C_1}C_1$ and conjecture the existence of a new automorphism. Inspired by the confluences of the Painlevé equations, we produce similar embeddings for the confluent Cherednik algebras $\mathcal H_V,\mathcal H_{IV},\mathcal H_{III},\mathcal H_{II}$ and $\mathcal H_{I},$ defined in arXiv:1307.6140.

Confluences of the Painleve equations, Cherednik algebras and q-Askey scheme

In this paper we produce seven new algebras as confluences of the Cherednik algebra of type \check{C_1}C_1 and we characterise their spherical-sub-algebras. The limit of the spherical sub-algebra of the Cherednik algebra of type \check{C_1}C_1 is the monodromy manifold of the Painlevé VI equation. Here we prove that by considering the limits of the spherical sub-algebras of our new confluent algebras, one obtains the monodromy manifolds of all other Painlevé differential equations. Moreover, we introduce confluent versions of the Zhedanov algebra and prove that each of them (quotiented by their Casimir) is isomorphic to the corresponding spherical sub-algebra of our new confluent Cherednik algebras. We show that in the basic representation our confluent Zhedanov algebras act as symmetries of certain elements of the q-Askey scheme, thus setting a stepping stone towards the solution of the open problem of finding the corresponding quantum algebra for each element of the q-Askey scheme. These results establish a new link between the theory of the Painlevé equations and the theory of the q-Askey scheme and shed light on the reasons behind the occurrence of special polynomials in the Painlevé theory.

On a Poisson space of bilinear forms with a Poisson Lie action

We consider the space of bilinear forms on a complex N-dimensional vector space endowed with the quadratic Poisson bracket studied in our previous paper arXiv:1012.5251. We classify all possible quadratic brackets on the set of pairs of matrices A and B with the property that the natural action of B on the defining matrix A of a bilinear form is a Poisson action of a Poisson-Lie group, thus endowing this space of bilinear forms with the structure of Poisson homogeneous space. Beside the product Poisson structure we find two more (dual to each other) structures for which (in contrast to the product Poisson structure) we can implement the reduction to the space of bilinear forms with block upper triangular defining matrices by Dirac procedure. We consider the generalisation of the above construction to triples and show that the space of bilinear forms then acquires the structure of Poisson symmetric space. We study also the generalisation to chains of transformations and to the quantum and quantum affine algebras and the relation between the construction of Poisson symmetric spaces and that of the Poisson groupoid.

Non-Symmetric Basic Hypergeometric Polynomials and Representation Theory for Confluent Cherednik Algebras

In this paper we introduce a basic representation for the confluent Cherednik algebras $\mathcal H_{\rm V}$, $\mathcal H_{\rm III}$, $\mathcal H_{\rm III}^{D_7}$ and $\mathcal H_{\rm III}^{D_8}$ defined in arXiv:1307.6140. To prove faithfulness of this basic representation, we introduce the non-symmetric versions of the continuous dual $q$-Hahn, Al-Salam-Chihara, continuous big $q$-Hermite and continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials.
