Non-parametric Impedance based Stability and Controller Bandwidth Extraction from Impedance Measurements of HVDC-connected Wind Farms

Impedance measurements have been widely used with the Nyquist plot to estimate the stability of interconnected power systems. Being a black-box method for equivalent and aggregated impedance estimation, its use for the identification of sub-components bandwidth is not a straightforward task. This paper proposes a simple method that will enable to identify the specific part of the equivalent impedance (e.g. controller's bandwidth) that has major impact on the stability of the system. For doing that, the paper analyses the stability of an interconnected system of wind farms and high voltage dc (HVDC) transmission system. The impedance frequency responses of the wind farms and HVDC system from the ac collection point are measured and it is shown by the method proposed in this paper, which controller has major impact in the observed oscillation. A mitigation technique is proposed based on re-tuning of the critical controller bandwidth of the interconnected converters. The method suggested can reveal the internal controllers' dynamics of the wind farm from the measured impedance combined with an analytical expression of the impedance and a transfer function identity when no information about the controllers is provided by the vendors due to confidentiality and industry secrecy.

Accurate and reduced SISO Sequence Impedance Models of Grid-tied Voltage Source Converter for Small Signal Stability Analysis

Impedance models are widely used in assessing small signal stability of grid-tied voltage source converter (VSC) systems. Recent research has proven that impedance models of grid-tied VSC in both dq and sequence domains are generally Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) systems, and the generalized Nyquist criterion has to be applied for stability analysis to these MIMO systems. However, finding Single-Input and Single-Output (SISO) equivalents for this system is always appealing because of the simplicity and the convenience for physical interpretation when assessing the stability, compared to MIMO systems. This paper presents two types of SISO impedance models of grid-tied VSC system, one is derived from the strong grid assumption, and the other is from the closed-loop equivalence. The accuracy of these models is assessed with respect to the measured impedances in PSCAD/EMTDC, and their effects on the stability assessment were analyzed as well. It is proven that the accurate SISO model gives identical result as the MIMO (matrix-based) impedance model with respect to stability analysis. However, the reduced SISO model may lead to wrong results if the bandwidth of phase locked loop is large.

Model Predictive Control of Voltage Source Converter in a HVDC System

Model Predictive Control (MPC) method is a class of advanced control techniques most widely applied in industry. The major advantages of the MPC are its straightforward procedure which can be applied for both linear and nonlinear system. This paper proposes the use of MPC for voltage source converter (VSC) in a high voltage direct current (HVDC) system. A MPC controller is modeled based on the state-space model of a single VSC-HVDC station including the dynamics of the main ac grid. A full scale nonlinear switching model of point-to-point connected VSC-based HVDC system is developed in Matlab/Simulink association with SimPower system to demonstrate the application of the proposed controller.

Augmented Sequence Impedance Networks of Grid-tied Voltage Source Converter for Stability Analysis

Impedance-based stability analysis is appealing in the case of Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) systems. However, in the case of grid-tied voltage source converter (VSC) systems, dq impedances of source and load (VSC) subsystems are typically Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) systems in which case the Generalized Nyquist Criterion (GNC) is required for analyzing the closed loop stability, which increases the complexity of the analysis. This paper explores further the coupling between positive and negative sequence impedances, in particular the dependency and bindings between them. It shows that the couplings in each subsystem can be compounded into two non-coupled sequence impedances if the source and load subsystems are viewed as an integrated system instead of as two separate subsystems. Therefore, two decoupled SISO systems are obtained which are defined as Augmented Sequence Impedance Networks (ASIN). The stability analysis of the closed loop system is performed directly on the ASIN with the principal of Argument. Both numerical and time domain verifications are presented.

Coupled and decoupled impedance models compared in power electronics systems

This paper provides a comparative analysis of impedance models for power electronic converters and systems for the purpose of stability investigations. Such models can be divided into either decoupled models or matrix models. A decoupled impedance model is highly appealing since the Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) structure makes the analysis and result interpretation very simple. On the other hand, matrix impedance models are more accurate, and in some cases necessary. Previous works have applied various approximations to obtain decoupled models, and both the dq- and sequence domains have been used. This paper introduces the terms decoupled and semi-decoupled impedance models in order to have a clear classification of the available approximations. The accuracy of 4 decoupled impedance models are discussed based on the concept of Mirror Frequency Coupling (MFC). By definition the decoupled models based on sequence domain impedances will be exact for systems without MFC. In the general case, they are expected to be more accurate than the decoupled dq-impedance models. The paper defines a norm $ε$ to measure the degree of coupling in the impedance matrices. This norm equals the error in the eigenvalue loci between the matrix and semi-decoupled models. This can also be viewed as the error in the semi-decoupled Nyquist plot. An example case study consisting of a grid-connected VSC with current controller and PLL is used to compare the different methods. It is found that decoupled and semi-decoupled models in the dq-domain are only applicable in grids with very low X/R-ratio. Furthermore, it is concluded that the decoupled model in the sequence domain gives close to equal results as the semi-decoupled model.

A modified sequence domain impedance definition and its equivalence to the dq-domain impedance definition for the stability analysis of AC power electronic systems

Representations of AC power systems by frequency dependent impedance equivalents is an emerging technique in the dynamic analysis of power systems including power electronic converters. The technique has been applied for decades in DC-power systems, and it was recently adopted to map the impedances in AC systems. Most of the work on AC systems can be categorized in two approaches. One is the analysis of the system in the \textit{dq}-domain, whereas the other applies harmonic linearization in the phase domain through symmetric components. Impedance models based on analytical calculations, numerical simulation and experimental studies have been previously developed and verified in both domains independently. The authors of previous studies discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each domain separately, but neither a rigorous comparison nor an attempt to bridge them has been conducted. The present paper attempts to close this gap by deriving the mathematical formulation that shows the equivalence between the \textit{dq}-domain and the sequence domain impedances. A modified form of the sequence domain impedance matrix is proposed, and with this definition the stability estimates obtained with the Generalized Nyquist Criterion (GNC) become equivalent in both domains. The second contribution of the paper is the definition of a \textit{Mirror Frequency Decoupled} (MFD) system. The analysis of MFD systems is less complex than that of non-MFD systems because the positive and negative sequences are decoupled. This paper shows that if a system is incorrectly assumed to be MFD, this will lead to an erroneous or ambiguous estimation of the equivalent impedance.

Entropic Empirical Mode Decomposition

Empirical Mode Decomposition(EMD) is an adaptive data analysis technique for analyzing nonlinear and nonstationary data[1]. EMD decomposes the original data into a number of Intrinsic Mode Functions(IMFs)[1] for giving better physical insight of the data. Permutation Entropy(PE) is a complexity measure[3] function which is widely used in the field of complexity theory for analyzing the local complexity of time series. In this paper we are combining the concepts of PE and EMD to resolve the mode mixing problem observed in determination of IMFs.

On wind Turbine failure detection from measurements of phase currents: a permutation entropy approach

This article presents the applicability of Permutation Entropy based complexity measure of a time series for detection of fault in wind turbines. A set of electrical data from one faulty and one healthy wind turbine were analysed using traditional FastFourier analysis in addition to Permutation Entropy analysis to compare the complexity index of phase currents of the two turbines over time. The 4 seconds length data set did not reveal any low frequency in the spectra of currents, neither did they show any meaningful differences of spectrum between the two turbine currents. Permutation Entropy analysis of the current waveforms of same phases for the two turbines are found to have different complexity values over time, one of them being clearly higher than the other. The work of Yan et. al. in has found that higher entropy values related to thepresence of failure in rotary machines in his study. Following this track, further efforts will be put into relating the entropy difference found in our study to possible presence of failure in one of the wind energy conversion systems.

Search-Enhanced Instantaneous Frequency Detection Algorithm: A Preliminary Design

This paper presents a method developed for finding sinusoidal components within a nonlinear non-stationary time-series data using Genetic Algorithm (GA) (a global optimization technique). It is called Search-Enhanced Instantaneous Frequency Detection (SEIFD) algorithm. The GA adaptively define the configuration of the components by simulating the solution finding process as a series of genetic evolutions. The start-time, end-time, frequency, and phase of each of these components are identified once convergence in the implementation is achieved.

Enhanced active power filter control for nonlinear non-stationary reactive power compensation

This paper describes a method to implement Reactive Power Compensation (RPC) in power systems that possess nonlinear non-stationary current disturbances. The Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) introduced in the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) is used to separate the disturbances from the original current waveform. These disturbances are subsequently removed. Following that, Power Factor Correction (PFC) based on the well-known p-q power theory is conducted to remove the reactive power. Both operations were implemented in a shunt Active Power Filter (APF). The EMD significantly simplifies the singulation and the removal of the current disturbances. This helps to effectively identify the fundamental current waveform. Hence, it simplifies the implementation of RPC on nonlinear non-stationary power systems.

Performance assessment of two active power filter control strategies in the presence of non-stationary currents

This paper describes an active power filter (APF) control strategy, which eliminates harmonics and compensates reactive power in a three-phase four-wire power system supplying non-linear unbalanced loads in the presence of non-linear non-stationary currents. Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) technique developed as part of the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) is used to singulate the harmonics and non-linear non stationary disturbances from the load currents. The control strategy for the APF is formulated by hybridizing the so called modified p-q theory with the EMD algorithm. A four-leg split-capacitor converter controlled by hysteresis band current controller is used as an APF. The results obtained are compared with those obtained with the conventional modified p-q theory, which does not possess current harmonics or distortions separation strategy, to validate its performance.
