Stochastic Partial Differential Equations, Space-time White Noise and Random Fields

This book is an introduction to the theory of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs), using the random field approach pioneered by J.B. Walsh (1986). It consists of two blocks: the core matter (Chapters 1 to 6) and the appendices (A to C). Chapter 1 introduces the subject, with a discussion of isonormal Gaussian processes, space-time white noise, and motivating examples of SPDEs. Chapter 2 presents a theory of stochastic integration with respect to space-time white noise. Chapter 3 deals with SPDEs with additive noise. In Chapter 4, we study a general class of SPDEs, in which additive and multiplicative nonlinearities appear. Chapter 5 discusses asymptotic properties of the solution to the stochastic heat equation such as existence of invariant and reversible measures, convergence in law to the invariant distribution, mixing and irreducibility. In Chapter 6, we prove a theorem on existence and uniqueness of solutions in the weak sense. Then we present a selection of important topics in the theory of SPDEs: the Markov field property, asymptotic bounds on moments of solutions that are useful for studying long-time behavior of the solutions, a comparison theorem for the stochastic heat equation, an introduction to potential theory for SPDEs, and a study of SPDEs with rough initial conditions. Appendix A summarises the main results from the theory of stochastic processes and stochastic analysis that are used throughout the book. Appendix B is devoted to a systematic presentation of properties of fundamental solutions and Green's functions associated to the classical linear differential operators (heat, fractional heat and wave operators). Appendix C is a toolbox section. Each chapter is followed by a "Notes" section, which gives historically important references, original sources and points towards other related important contributions.

Sample path properties of parabolic SPDEs with non constant coefficients

We consider an SPDE driven by a parabolic second order partial differential operator with a nonlinear random external forcing defined by a Gaussian noise that is white in time and has a spatially homogeneous covariance. We prove existence and uniqueness of a random field solution to this SPDE. Our main result concerns the space-time sample path regularity of its solution.

Optimal regularity of SPDEs with additive noise

The sample-function regularity of the random-field solution to a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) depends naturally on the roughness of the external noise, as well as on the properties of the underlying integro-differential operator that is used to define the equation. In this paper, we consider parabolic and hyperbolic SPDEs on $0,\infty)\times\mathbb{R}^d$ of the form $\partial_t u = L u + g(u) + \dot{F} \qquad\text{and}\qquad \partial^2_t u = L u + c + \dot{F}, $ with suitable initial data, forced with a space-time homogeneous Gaussian noise $\dot{F}$ that is white in its time variable and correlated in its space variable, and driven by the generator $L$ of a genuinely $d$-dimensional Lévy process $X$. We find optimal Hölder conditions for the respective random-field solutions to these SPDEs. Our conditions are stated in terms of indices that describe thresholds on the integrability of some functionals of the characteristic exponent of the process $X$ with respect to the spectral measure of the spatial covariance of $\dot F$. Those indices are suggested by references [45, 46] on the particular case that $L$ is the Laplace operator on $\mathbb{R}^d$.

A linear stochastic biharmonic heat equation: hitting probabilities

Consider the linear stochastic biharmonic heat equation on a $d$-dimensional torus ($d=1,2,3$), driven by a space-time white noise and with periodic boundary conditions: \begin{equation} \label{0} \left(\frac{\partial}{\partial t}+(-Δ)^2\right) v(t,x)= σ\dot W(t,x),\ (t,x)\in(0,T]\times \mathbb{T}^d,\ v(0,x)=v_0(x). \end{equation} We find the canonical pseudo-distance corresponding to the random field solution, therefore the precise description of the anisotropies of the process. We see that for $d=2$, they include a $z(\log \tfrac{c}{z})^{1/2}$ term. Consider $D$ independent copies of the random field solution to the SPDEs. Applying the criteria proved in [4], we establish upper and lower bounds for the probabilities that the path process hits bounded Borel sets. This yields results on the polarity of sets and on the Hausdorff dimension of the path process.

Global solutions to stochastic wave equations with superlinear coefficients

We prove existence and uniqueness of a random field solution $(u(t,x); (t,x)\in [0,T]\times \mathbb{R}^d)$ to a stochastic wave equation in dimensions $d=1,2,3$ with diffusion and drift coefficients of the form $|z| \big( \ln_+(|z|) \big)^a$ for some $a>0$. The proof relies on a sharp analysis of moment estimates of time and space increments of the corresponding stochastic wave equation with globally Lipschitz coefficients. We give examples of spatially correlated Gaussian driving noises where the results apply.

Anisotropic Gaussian random fields: Criteria for hitting probabilities and applications

We develop criteria for hitting probabilities of anisotropic Gaussian random fields with associated canonical pseudo-metric given by a class of gauge functions. This yields lower and upper bounds in terms of general notions of capacity and Hausdorff measure, respectively, therefore extending the classical estimates with the Bessel-Riesz capacity and the $γ$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. We apply the criteria to a system of linear stochastic partial differential equations driven by space-time noises that are fractional in time and either white or colored in space.

Systems of stochastic Poisson equations: hitting probabilities

We consider a $d$-dimensional random field $u=(u(x), x\in D)$ that solves a system of elliptic stochastic equations on a bounded domain $D\subset \mathbb{R}^k$, with additive white noise and spatial dimension $k=1,2,3$. Properties of $u$ and its probability law are proved. For Gaussian solutions, using results from [Dalang and Sanz-Solé, 2009], we establish upper and lower bounds on hitting probabilities in terms of the Hausdorff measure and Bessel-Riesz capacity, respectively. This relies on precise estimates on the canonical distance of the process or, equivalently, on $L^2$ estimates of increments of the Green function of the Laplace equation.

Approximation of a stochastic wave equation in dimension three, with application to a support theorem in Hölder norm: The non-stationary case

This paper is a continuation of (Bernoulli 20 (2014) 2169-2216) where we prove a characterization of the support in Hölder norm of the law of the solution to a stochastic wave equation with three-dimensional space variable and null initial conditions. Here, we allow for non-null initial conditions and, therefore, the solution does not possess a stationary property in space. As in (Bernoulli 20 (2014) 2169-2216), the support theorem is a consequence of an approximation result, in the convergence of probability, of a sequence of evolution equations driven by a family of regularizations of the driving noise. However, the method of the proof differs from (Bernoulli 20 (2014) 2169-2216) since arguments based on the stationarity property of the solution cannot be used.

Non elliptic SPDEs and ambit fields: existence of densities

Relying on the method developed in [debusscheromito2014], we prove the existence of a density for two different examples of random fields indexed by $(t,x)\in(0,T]\times \Rd$. The first example consists of SPDEs with Lipschitz continuous coefficients driven by a Gaussian noise white in time and with a stationary spatial covariance, in the setting of [dalang1999]. The density exists on the set where the nonlinearity $σ$ of the noise does not vanish. This complements the results in [sanzsuess2015] where $σ$ is assumed to be bounded away from zero. The second example is an ambit field with a stochastic integral term having as integrator a Lévy basis of pure-jump, stable-like type.

Absolute continuity for SPDEs with irregular fundamental solution

For the class of stochastic partial differential equations studied in [Conus-Dalang,2008], we prove the existence of density of the probability law of the solution at a given point $(t,x)$, and that the density belongs to some Besov space. The proof relies on the method developed in [Debussche-Romito, 2014]. The result can be applied to the solution of the stochastic wave equation with multiplicative noise, Lipschitz coefficients and any spatial dimension $d\ge 1$, and also to the heat equation. This provides an extension of the results proved in [Sanz-Solé and Süß, 2013].

Logarithmic asymptotics of the densities of SPDEs driven by spatially correlated noise

We consider the family of stochastic partial differential equations indexed by a parameter $\eps\in(0,1]$, \begin{equation*} Lu^{\eps}(t,x) = \epsσ(u^\eps(t,x))\dot{F}(t,x)+b(u^\eps(t,x)), \end{equation*} $(t,x)\in(0,T]\times\Rd$ with suitable initial conditions. In this equation, $L$ is a second-order partial differential operator with constant coefficients, $σ$ and $b$ are smooth functions and $\dot{F}$ is a Gaussian noise, white in time and with a stationary correlation in space. Let $p^\eps_{t,x}$ denote the density of the law of $u^\eps(t,x)$ at a fixed point $(t,x)\in(0,T]\times\Rd$. We study the existence of $\lim_{\eps\downarrow 0} \eps^2\log p^\eps_{t,x}(y)$ for a fixed $y\in\R$. The results apply to a class of stochastic wave equations with $d\in\{1,2,3\}$ and to a class of stochastic heat equations with $d\ge1$.

Hitting probabilities for non-linear systems of stochastic waves

We consider a $d$-dimensional random field $u = \{u(t,x)\}$ that solves a non-linear system of stochastic wave equations in spatial dimensions $k \in \{1,2,3\}$, driven by a spatially homogeneous Gaussian noise that is white in time. We mainly consider the case where the spatial covariance is given by a Riesz kernel with exponent $β$. Using Malliavin calculus, we establish upper and lower bounds on the probabilities that the random field visits a deterministic subset of $\IR^d$, in terms, respectively, of Hausdorff measure and Newtonian capacity of this set. The dimension that appears in the Hausdorff measure is close to optimal, and shows that when $d(2-β) > 2(k+1)$, points are polar for $u$. Conversely, in low dimensions $d$, points are not polar. There is however an interval in which the question of polarity of points remains open.

The stochastic wave equation in high dimensions: Malliavin differentiability and absolute continuity

We consider the class of non-linear stochastic partial differential equations studied in \cite{conusdalang}. Equivalent formulations using integration with respect to a cylindrical Brownian motion and also the Skorohod integral are established. It is proved that the random field solution to these equations at any fixed point $(t,x)\in[0,T]\times \Rd$ is differentiable in the Malliavin sense. For this, an extension of the integration theory in \cite{conusdalang} to Hilbert space valued integrands is developed, and commutation formulae of the Malliavin derivative and stochastic and pathwise integrals are proved. In the particular case of equations with additive noise, we establish the existence of density for the law of the solution at $(t,x)\in]0,T]\times\Rd$. The results apply to the stochastic wave equation in spatial dimension $d\ge 4$.

Criteria for hitting probabilities with applications to systems of stochastic wave equations

We develop several results on hitting probabilities of random fields which highlight the role of the dimension of the parameter space. This yields upper and lower bounds in terms of Hausdorff measure and Bessel--Riesz capacity, respectively. We apply these results to a system of stochastic wave equations in spatial dimension $k\ge1$ driven by a $d$-dimensional spatially homogeneous additive Gaussian noise that is white in time and colored in space.

A Laplace principle for a stochastic wave equation in spatial dimension three

We consider a stochastic wave equation in spatial dimension three, driven by a Gaussian noise, white in time and with a stationary spatial covariance. The free terms are nonlinear with Lipschitz continuous coefficients. Under suitable conditions on the covariance measure, Dalang and Sanz-Solé [Memoirs of the AMS, Vol 199, 2009] have proved the existence of a random field solution with Hölder continuous sample paths, jointly in both arguments, time and space. By perturbing the driving noise with a multiplicative parameter $ε\in]0,1]$, a family of probability laws corresponding to the respective solutions to the equation is obtained. Using the weak convergence approach to large deviations developed in [P. Dupuis, R. S. Ellis, 1997], we prove that this family satisfies a Laplace principle in the Hölder norm.

A fractional Poisson equation: existence, regularity and approximations

We consider a stochastic boundary value elliptic problem on a bounded domain $D\subset \mathbb{R}^k$, driven by a fractional Brownian field with Hurst parameter $H=(H_1,...,H_k)\in[{1/2},1[^k$. First we define the stochastic convolution derived from the Green kernel and prove some properties. Using monotonicity methods, we prove existence and uniqueness of solution, along with regularity of the sample paths. Finally, we propose a sequence of lattice approximations and prove its convergence to the solution of the SPDE at a given rate.

Mild Solutions for a Class of Fractional SPDEs and Their Sample Paths

In this article we introduce and analyze a notion of mild solution for a class of non-autonomous parabolic stochastic partial differential equations defined on a bounded open subset $D\subset\mathbb{R}^{d}$ and driven by an infinite-dimensional fractional noise. The noise is derived from an $L^{2}(D)$-valued fractional Wiener process $W^{H}$ whose covariance operator satisfies appropriate restrictions; moreover, the Hurst parameter $H$ is subjected to constraints formulated in terms of $d$ and the Hölder exponent of the derivative $h^\prime$ of the noise nonlinearity in the equations. We prove the existence of such solution, establish its relation with the variational solution introduced in \cite{nuavu} and also prove the Hölder continuity of its sample paths when we consider it as an $L^{2}(D)$--valued stochastic processes. When $h$ is an affine function, we also prove uniqueness. The proofs are based on a relation between the notions of mild and variational solution established in Sanz-Solé and Vuillermot 2003, and adapted to our problem, and on a fine analysis of the singularities of Green's function associated with the class of parabolic problems we investigate. An immediate consequence of our results is the indistinguishability of mild and variational solutions in the case of uniqueness.
