Gradient forms and strong solidity of free quantum groups

Consider the free orthogonal quantum groups $O_N^+(F)$ and free unitary quantum groups $U_N^+(F)$ with $N \geq 3$. In the case $F = {\rm id}_N$ it was proved both by Isono and Fima-Vergnioux that the associated finite von Neumann algebra $L_\infty(O_N^+)$ is strongly solid. Moreover, Isono obtains strong solidity also for $L_\infty(U_N^+)$ . In this paper we prove for general $F \in GL_N(\mathbb{C})$ that the von Neumann algebras $L_\infty(O_N^+(F))$ and $L_\infty(U_N^+(F))$ are strongly solid. A crucial part in our proof is the study of coarse properties of gradient bimodules associated with Dirichlet forms on these algebras and constructions of derivations due to Cipriani--Sauvageot.

Weak $(1,1)$ estimates for multiple operator integrals and generalized absolute value functions

Consider the generalized absolute value function defined by \[ a(t) = \vert t \vert t^{n-1}, \qquad t \in \mathbb{R}, n \in \mathbb{N}_{\geq 1}. \] Further, consider the $n$-th order divided difference function $a^{[n]}: \mathbb{R}^{n+1} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ and let $1 < p_1, \ldots, p_n < \infty$ be such that $\sum_{l=1}^n p_l^{-1} = 1$. Let $\mathcal{S}_{p_l}$ denote the Schatten-von Neumann ideals and let $\mathcal{S}_{1,\infty}$ denote the weak trace class ideal. We show that for any $(n+1)$-tuple ${\bf A}$ of bounded self-adjoint operators the multiple operator integral $T_{a^{[n]}}^{\bf A}$ maps $\mathcal{S}_{p_1} \times \ldots \times \mathcal{S}_{p_n}$ to $\mathcal{S}_{1, \infty}$ boundedly with uniform bound in ${\bf A}$. The same is true for the class of $C^{n+1}$-functions that outside the interval $[-1, 1]$ equal $a$. In [CLPST16] it was proved that for a function $f$ in this class such boundedness of $T^{ {\bf A} }_{f^{[n]}}$ from $\mathcal{S}_{p_1} \times \ldots \times \mathcal{S}_{p_n}$ to $\mathcal{S}_{1}$ may fail, resolving a problem by V. Peller. This shows that the estimates in the current paper are optimal. The proof is based on a new reduction method for arbitrary multiple operator integrals of divided differences.

Graph product Khintchine inequalities and Hecke C*-algebras: Haagerup inequalities, (non)simplicity, nuclearity and exactness

Graph products of groups were introduced by Green in her thesis. They have an operator algebraic counterpart introduced and explored by Fima and the first-named author. In this paper we prove Khintchine type inequalities for general C$^{\ast}$-algebraic graph products which generalize results by Ricard and Xu on free products of C$^{\ast}$-algebras. We apply these inequalities in the context of (right-angled) Hecke C$^{\ast}$-algebras, which are deformations of the group algebra of Coxeter groups. For these we deduce a Haagerup inequality. We further use this to study the simplicity and trace uniqueness of (right-angled) Hecke C$^{\ast}$-algebras. Lastly we characterize exactness and nuclearity of general Hecke C$^{\ast}$-algebras.

Graph products of operator algebras

Graph products for groups were defined by Green in her thesis as a generalization of both Cartesian and free products. In this paper we define the corresponding graph product for reduced and maximal C*-algebras, von Neumann algebras and quantum groups. We prove stability properties including permanence properties of II_1-factors, the Haagerup property, exactness and under suitable conditions the property of Rapid Decay for quantum groups.

On the complete bounds of $L_p$-Schur multipliers

We study the class $\mathcal{M}_p$ of Schur multipliers on the Schatten-von Neumann class $\mathcal{S}_p$ with $1 \leq p \leq \infty$ as well as the class of completely bounded Schur multipliers $\mathcal{M}_p^{cb}$. We first show that for $2 \leq p < q \leq \infty$ there exist $m \in \mathcal{M}_p^{cb}$ with $m \not \in \mathcal{M}_q$, so in particular the following inclusions that follow from interpolation are strict $\mathcal{M}_q \subsetneq \mathcal{M}_p$ and $\mathcal{M}^{cb}_q \subsetneq \mathcal{M}^{cb}_p$. In the remainder of the paper we collect computational evidence that for $p\not = 1,2, \infty$ we have $\mathcal{M}_p = \mathcal{M}_p^{cb}$, moreover with equality of bounds and complete bounds. This would suggest that a conjecture raised by Pisier is false.

BMO-estimates for non-commutative vector valued Lipschitz functions

We construct Markov semi-groups $\mathcal{T}$ and associated BMO-spaces on a finite von Neumann algebra $(\mathcal{M}, τ)$ and obtain results for perturbations of commutators and non-commutative Lipschitz estimates. In particular, we prove that for any $A \in \mathcal{M}$ self-adjoint and $f: \mathbb{R} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ Lipschitz there is a Markov semi-group $\mathcal{T}$ such that for $x \in \mathcal{M}$, \[ \Vert [f(A), x] \Vert_{{\rm BMO}(\mathcal{M}, \mathcal{T})} \leq c_{abs} \Vert f' \Vert_\infty \Vert [A, x] \Vert_\infty. \] We obtain an analogue of this result for more general von Neumann valued-functions $f: \mathbb{R}^n \rightarrow \mathcal{N}$ by imposing Hörmander-Mikhlin type assumptions on $f$. In establishing these result we show that Markov dilations of Markov semi-groups have certain automatic continuity properties. We also show that Markov semi-groups of double operator integrals admit (standard and reversed) Markov dilations.

$L_2$-cohomology, derivations and quantum Markov semi-groups on $q$-Gaussian algebras

We study (quasi-)cohomological properties through an analysis of quantum Markov semi-groups. We construct higher order Hochschild cocycles using gradient forms associated with a quantum Markov semi-group. By using Schatten-$\mathcal{S}_p$ estimates we analyze when these cocycles take values in the coarse bimodule. For the 1-cocycles (the derivations) we show that under natural conditions they imply the Akemann-Ostrand property (using the Riesz transform). We apply this to $q$-Gaussian algebras $Γ_q(H)$. As a result $q$-Gaussians satisfy AO$^+$ for $| q | \leqslant \dim(H)^{-1/2}$. This includes a new range of $q$ in low dimensions compared to Shlyakhtenko.

On C*-completions of discrete quantum group rings

We discuss just infiniteness of C*-algebras associated to discrete quantum groups and relate it to the C*-uniqueness of the quantum groups in question, i.e. to the uniqueness of a C*-completion of the underlying Hopf *-algebra. It is shown that duals of q-deformations of simply connected semisimple compact Lie groups are never C*-unique. On the other hand we present an example of a discrete quantum group which is not locally finite and yet is C*-unique.

Absence of Cartan subalgebras for right-angled Hecke von Neumann algebras

For a right-angled Coxeter system $(W,S)$ and $q>0$, let $\mathcal{M}_q$ be the associated Hecke von Neumann algebra, which is generated by self-adjoint operators $T_s, s \in S$ satisfying the Hecke relation $(\sqrt{q}\: T_s - q) (\sqrt{q} \: T_s + 1) = 0$ as well as suitable commutation relations. Under the assumption that $(W, S)$ is irreducible and $\vert S \vert \geq 3$ it was proved by Garncarek that $\mathcal{M}_q$ is a factor (of type II$_1$) for a range $q \in [ρ, ρ^{-1}]$ and otherwise $\mathcal{M}_q$ is the direct sum of a II$_1$-factor and $\mathbb{C}$. In this paper we prove (under the same natural conditions as Garncarek) that $\mathcal{M}_q$ is non-injective, that it has the weak-$\ast$ completely contractive approximation property and that it has the Haagerup property. In the hyperbolic factorial case $\mathcal{M}_q$ is a strongly solid algebra and consequently $\mathcal{M}_q$ cannot have a Cartan subalgebra. In the general case $\mathcal{M}_q$ need not be strongly solid. However, we give examples of non-hyperbolic right-angled Coxeter groups such that $\mathcal{M}_q$ does not possess a Cartan subalgebra.

Harmonic analysis and BMO-spaces of free Araki-Woods factors

We consider semi-group BMO-spaces associated with arbitrary von Neumann algebras and prove interpolation theorems. This extends results by Junge-Mei for the tracial case. We give examples of multipliers on free Araki-Woods algebras and in particular we find $L_\infty \rightarrow {\rm BMO}$ multipliers. We also provide $L_p$-bounds for a natural generalization of the Hilbert transform.

On MASAs in $q$-deformed von Neumann algebras

We study certain $q$-deformed analogues of the maximal abelian subalgebras of the group von Neumann algebras of free groups. The radial subalgebra is defined for Hecke deformed von Neumann algebras of the Coxeter group $(\mathbb{Z}/{2\mathbb{Z}})^{\star k}$ and shown to be a maximal abelian subalgebra which is singular and with Pukánszky invariant $\{\infty\}$. Further all non-equal generator masas in the $q$-deformed Gaussian von Neumann algebras are shown to be mutually non-unitarily conjugate.

Weak type operator Lipschitz and commutator estimates for commuting tuples

Let $f: \mathbb{R}^d \to\mathbb{R}$ be a Lipschitz function. If $B$ is a bounded self-adjoint operator and if $\{A_k\}_{k=1}^d$ are commuting bounded self-adjoint operators such that $[A_k,B]\in L_1(H),$ then $$\|[f(A_1,\cdots,A_d),B]\|_{1,\infty}\leq c(d)\|\nabla(f)\|_{\infty}\max_{1\leq k\leq d}\|[A_k,B]\|_1,$$ where $c(d)$ is a constant independent of $f$, $\mathcal{M}$ and $A,B$ and $\|\cdot\|_{1,\infty}$ denotes the weak $L_1$-norm. If $\{X_k\}_{k=1}^d$ (respectively, $\{Y_k\}_{k=1}^d$) are commuting bounded self-adjoint operators such that $X_k-Y_k\in L_1(H),$ then $$\|f(X_1,\cdots,X_d)-f(Y_1,\cdots,Y_d)\|_{1,\infty}\leq c(d)\|\nabla(f)\|_{\infty}\max_{1\leq k\leq d}\|X_k-Y_k\|_1.$$

Weight theory for ultraproducts

For a family of von Neumann algebras $\mathcal{M}_j$ equipped with normal weights $φ_j$ we define the ultraproduct weight $(φ_j)_ω$ on the Groh--Raynaud ultrapower $\prod_{j, ω} \mathcal{M}_j$. We prove results about Tomita-Takesaki modular theory and consider ultraproducts of spatial derivatives. This extends results by Ando--Haagerup and Raynaud for the state case. We give some applications to noncommutative $L^p$-spaces and indicate how ultraproducts of weights appear naturally in transference results for Schur and Fourier multipliers. Using ideas from complex interpolation with respect to ultraproduct weights, we give a new proof of a theorem by Raynaud which shows that $\prod_{j, ω} L^p(\mathcal{M}_j) \simeq L^p(\prod_{j, ω} \mathcal{M}_j )$. We complement the paper by showing that spatial derivatives take a natural form in terms of noncommutative $L^p$-spaces.

Weak type commutator and Lipschitz estimates: resolution of the Nazarov-Peller conjecture

Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a semi-finite von Neumann algebra and let $f: \mathbb{R} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ be a Lipschitz function. If $A,B\in\mathcal{M}$ are self-adjoint operators such that $[A,B]\in L_1(\mathcal{M}),$ then $$\|[f(A),B]\|_{1,\infty}\leq c_{abs}\|f'\|_{\infty}\|[A,B]\|_1,$$ where $c_{abs}$ is an absolute constant independent of $f$, $\mathcal{M}$ and $A,B$ and $\|\cdot\|_{1,\infty}$ denotes the weak $L_1$-norm. If $X,Y\in\mathcal{M}$ are self-adjoint operators such that $X-Y\in L_1(\mathcal{M}),$ then $$\|f(X)-f(Y)\|_{1,\infty}\leq c_{abs}\|f'\|_{\infty}\|X-Y\|_1.$$ This result resolves a conjecture raised by F. Nazarov and V. Peller implying a couple of existing results in perturbation theory.

The Haagerup property for arbitrary von Neumann algebras

We introduce a natural generalization of the Haagerup property of a finite von Neumann algebra to an arbitrary von Neumann algebra (with a separable predual) equipped with a normal, semi-finite, faithful weight and prove that this property does not depend on the choice of the weight. In particular this defines the Haagerup property as an intrinsic invariant of the von Neumann algebra. We also show that such a generalized Haagerup property is preserved under taking crossed products by actions of amenable locally compact groups. Our results are motivated by recent examples from the theory of discrete quantum groups, where the Haagerup property appears a priori only with respect to the Haar state.

The Haagerup approximation property for von Neumann algebras via quantum Markov semigroups and Dirichlet forms

The Haagerup approximation property for a von Neumann algebra equipped with a faithful normal state $φ$ is shown to imply existence of unital, $φ$-preserving and KMS-symmetric approximating maps. This is used to obtain a characterisation of the Haagerup approximation property via quantum Markov semigroups (extending the tracial case result due to Jolissaint and Martin) and further via quantum Dirichlet forms.

The best constants for operator Lipschitz functions on Schatten classes

Suppose that f is a Lipschitz function on the real numbers with Lipschitz constant smaller or equal to 1. Let A be a bounded self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space H. Let 1<p<infinity and suppose that x in B(H) is an operator such that the commutator [A, x] is contained in the Schatten class S_p. It is proved by the last two authors, that then also [f(A), x] is contained in S_p and there exists a constant C_p independent of x and f such that || [f(A), x] ||_p <= C_p || [A,x] ||_p. The main result of this paper is to give a sharp estimate for C_p in terms of p. Namely, we show that C_p ~ p^2/(p-1). In particular, this gives the best estimates for operator Lipschitz inequalities. We treat this result in a more general setting. This involves commutators of n self-adjoint operators, for which we prove the analogous result. The case described here in the abstract follows as a special case.
