Photodetachment dynamics using nonlocal dicrete-state-in-continuum model

In this preprint I propose that the non local discrete-state-in-continuum model previously successfully used to describe the inelastic electron molecule collisions can also be used to model the electron photo-detachment from the molecular anions. The basic theory is sketched and the approach is tested on the model of electron photodetachment from diatomic molecular anion.

Vibronic dynamics in electron continuum -- iterative solvers

We present a general two-dimensional model of conical intersection between metastable states that are vibronically coupled not only directly but also indirectly through a virtual electron in the autodetachment continuum. This model is used as a test ground for design and comparison of iterative solvers for resonance dynamics in low-energy electron-molecule collisions. Two Krylov-subspace methods with various preconditioning schemes are compared. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed methods on even larger models, we also test the performance of one of the methods on a recent model of vibrational excitation of CO$_2$ by electron impact based on three vibronically-coupled discrete states in continuum (Renner-Teller doublet of shape resonances coupled to sigma virtual state) including four vibrational degrees of freedom. Two-dimensional electron energy-loss spectra resulting from the electron-molecule scattering within the models are briefly discussed.

Current-induced bond rupture in single-molecule junctions: Effects of multiple electronic states and vibrational modes

Current-induced bond rupture is a fundamental process in nanoelectronic architectures such as molecular junctions and in scanning tunneling microscopy measurements of molecules at surfaces. The understanding of the underlying mechanisms is important for the design of molecular junctions that are stable at higher bias voltages and is a prerequisite for further developments in the field of current-induced chemistry. In this work, we analyse the mechanisms of current-induced bond rupture employing a recently developed method, which combines the hierarchical equations of motion approach in twin space with the matrix product state formalism, and allows accurate, fully quantum mechanical simulations of the complex bond rupture dynamics. Extending previous work [J. Chem. Phys. 154, 234702 (2021)], we consider specifically the effect of multiple electronic states and multiple vibrational modes. The results obtained for a series of models of increasing complexity show the importance of vibronic coupling between different electronic states of the charged molecule, which can enhance the dissociation rate at low bias voltages profoundly.

Optical frequency analysis on dark state of a single trapped ion

We demonstrate an optical frequency analysis method using the Fourier transform of detection times of fluorescence photons emitted from a single trapped 40Ca+ ion. The response of the detected photon rate to the relative laser frequency deviations is recorded within the slope of a dark resonance formed in the lambda-type energy level scheme corresponding to two optical dipole transitions. This approach enhances the sensitivity to the small frequency deviations and does so with reciprocal dependence on the fluorescence rate. The employed lasers are phase locked to an optical frequency comb, which allows for precise calibration of optical frequency analysis by deterministic modulation of the analyzed laser beam with respect to the reference beam. The attainable high signal-to-noise ratios of up to a MHz range of modulation deviations and up to a hundred kHz modulation frequencies promise the applicability of the presented results in a broad range of optical spectroscopic applications.

Multipath interference from large trapped ion chains

The demonstration of optical multipath interference from a large number of quantum emitters is essential for the realization of many paradigmatic experiments in quantum optics. However, such interference remains still unexplored as it crucially depends on the sub-wavelength positioning accuracy and stability of all emitters. We present the observation of controlled interference of light scattered from strings of up to 53~trapped ions. The light scattered from ions localized in a harmonic trapping potential is collected along the ion crystal symmetry axis, which guarantees the spatial indistinguishability and allows for an efficient scaling of the contributing ion number. We achieve the preservation of the coherence of scattered light observable for all the measured string sizes and nearly-optimal enhancement of phase sensitivity. The presented results will enable realization and control of directional photon emission, direct detection of enhanced quadrature squeezing of atomic resonance fluorescence, or optical generation of genuine multi-partite entanglement of atoms.

Motor effect in electron transport through a molecular junction with torsional vibrations

We propose a model for a molecular junction with internal anharmonic torsional vibrations interacting with an electric current. The Wangsness-Bloch-Redfield master equation approach is used to determine the stationary reduced density matrix of the molecule. The dependence of the current, excitation energy and angular momentum of the junction on the applied voltage is studied. Negative differential conductance is observed in the current-voltage characteristics. It is shown that a model with vibrationally dependent coupling to the electrodes, asymmetric with respect to the interchanging of electrodes, leads to a strong correlation between the applied voltage and the angular momentum of the junction. The model thus works as a molecular motor, with the angular momentum controlled by the size and sign of the voltage.
