Universality in the Decay and Revival of Loschmidt Echoes

A critically enhanced decay of the Loschmidt echo is characteristic of sudden quench dynamics near a quantum phase transition. Here, we demonstrate that the decay and revival of the Loschmidt echo follows power-law scaling in the system size and the distance from a critical point with equilibrium critical exponents. We reveal such dynamical scaling laws by analyzing relevant perturbations to the Loschmidt echo cast in a scaling invariant form. We confirm the validity and the generality of the predicted dynamical scaling laws with a diverse range of critical models such as Ising spin models with a short and long range interaction, a finite-component system phase transition, and a topological phase transition. Moreover, using the integrability of systems in the thermodynamic limit, we derive such scaling laws analytically from a microscopic analysis. Our finding promotes the Loschmidt echo to a quantitative non-equilibrium probe of criticality and allows for quantitative predictions on the role of criticality on various physical scenarios where the Loschmidt echo is central to describing non-equilibrium dynamics.

Dissipation-assisted matrix product factorization

Charge and energy transfer in biological and synthetic organic materials are strongly influenced by the coupling of electronic states to high-frequency underdamped vibrations under dephasing noise. Non-perturbative simulations of these systems require a substantial computational effort and current methods can only be applied to large systems with severely coarse-grained environmental structures. In this letter, we introduce a dissipation-assisted matrix product factorization (DAMPF) method based on a memory-efficient matrix product operator (MPO) representation of the vibronic state at finite temperature. In this approach, the correlations between environmental vibrational modes can be controlled by the MPO bond dimension, allowing for systematic interpolation between approximate and numerically exact dynamics. Crucially, by subjecting the vibrational modes to damping, we show that one can significantly reduce the bond dimension required to achieve a desired accuracy, and also consider a continuous, highly structured spectral density in a non-perturbative manner. We demonstrate that our method can simulate large vibronic systems consisting of 10-50 sites coupled with 100-1000 underdamped modes in total and for a wide range of parameter regimes. An analytical error bound is provided which allows one to monitor the accuracy of the numerical results. This formalism will facilitate the investigation of spatially extended systems with applications to quantum biology, organic photovoltaics and quantum thermodynamics.

Stochastic Coherence Theory for Qubits

The resource theory of coherence studies the operational value of superpositions in quantum technologies. A key question in this theory concerns the efficiency of manipulation and interconversion of this resource. Here we solve this question completely for mixed states of qubits by determining the optimal probabilities for mixed state conversions via stochastic incoherent operations. This implies new lower bounds on the asymptotic state conversion rate between mixed single-qubit states which in some cases is proven to be tight. Furthermore, we obtain the minimal distillable coherence for given coherence cost among all single-qubit states, which sheds new light on the irreversibility of coherence theory.

Quantum coherence and state conversion: theory and experiment

The resource theory of coherence studies the operational value of superpositions in quantum technologies. A key question in this theory concerns the efficiency of manipulation and inter-conversion of the resource. Here we solve this question completely for qubit states by determining the optimal probabilities for mixed state conversions via stochastic incoherent operations. Extending the discussion to distributed scenarios, we introduce and address the task of assisted incoherent state conversion where the process is enhanced by making use of correlations with a second party. Building on these results, we demonstrate experimentally that the optimal state conversion probabilities can be achieved in a linear optics set-up. This paves the way towards real world applications of coherence transformations in current quantum technologies.

Randomisation of Pulse Phases for Unambiguous and Robust Quantum Sensing

We develop theoretically and demonstrate experimentally a universal dynamical decoupling method for robust quantum sensing with unambiguous signal identification. Our method uses randomisation of control pulses to suppress simultaneously two types of errors in the measured spectra that would otherwise lead to false signal identification. These are spurious responses due to finite-width $π$ pulses, as well as signal distortion caused by $π$ pulse imperfections. For the cases of nanoscale nuclear spin sensing and AC magnetometry, we benchmark the performance of the protocol with a single nitrogen vacancy centre in diamond against widely used non-randomised pulse sequences. Our method is general and can be combined with existing multipulse quantum sensing sequences to enhance their performance.

Initialization and Readout of Nuclear Spins via negatively charged Silicon-Vacancy Center in Diamond

In this work, we demonstrate initialization and readout of nuclear spins via a negatively charged silicon-vacancy (SiV) electron spin qubit. Under Hartmann-Hahn conditions the electron spin polarization is coherently transferred to the nuclear spin. The readout of the nuclear polarization is observed via the fluorescence of the SiV. We also show that the coherence time of the nuclear spin (6 ms) is limited by the electron spin-lattice relaxation due to the hyperfine coupling to the electron spin. This work paves the way towards realization of building blocks of quantum hardware with an efficient spin-photon interface based on the SiV color center coupled to a long lasting nuclear memory.

Quantum Effects in a Mechanically Modulated Single Photon Emitter

Recent observation of quantum emitters in monolayers of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has provided a novel platform for optomechanical experiments where the single-photon emitters can couple to the motion of freely suspended h-BN membrane. Here, we propose a scheme where the electronic degree of freedom of an embedded color center is coupled to the motion of the hosting h-BN resonator via dispersive forces. We show that the coupling of membrane vibrations to the electronic degree of freedom of the emitter can reach the strong regime. By suitable driving of a three-level $Λ$-system composed of two spin degrees of freedom in the electronic ground state as well as an isolated excited state of the emitter a multiple electromagnetically induced transparency spectrum becomes available. The experimental feasibility of the efficient vibrational ground-state cooling of the membrane via quantum interference effects in the two-color drive scheme is numerically confirmed. More interestingly, the emission spectrum of the defect exhibits a frequency comb with frequency spacings as small as the fundamental vibrational mode, which finds applications in high-precision spectroscopy.

Coherence and non-classicality of quantum Markov processes

Although quantum coherence is a basic trait of quantum mechanics, the presence of coherences in the quantum description of a certain phenomenon does not rule out the possibility to give an alternative description of the same phenomenon in purely classical terms. Here, we give definite criteria to determine when and to what extent quantum coherence is equivalent to non-classicality. We prove that a Markovian multi-time statistics obtained from repeated measurements of a non-degenerate observable cannot be traced back to a classical statistics if and only if the dynamics is able to generate coherences and to subsequently turn them into populations. Furthermore, we show with simple examples that such connection between quantum coherence and non-classicality is generally absent if the statistics is non-Markovian.

Connecting nth order generalised quantum Rabi models: Emergence of nonlinear spin-boson coupling via spin rotations

We establish an approximate equivalence between a generalised quantum Rabi model and its nth order counterparts where spin-boson interactions are nonlinear as they comprise a simultaneous exchange of $n$ bosonic excitations. Although there exists no unitary transformation between these models, we demonstrate their equivalence to a good approximation in a wide range of parameters. This shows that nonlinear spin-boson couplings, i.e. nth order quantum Rabi models, are accessible to quantum systems with only linear coupling between boson and spin modes by simply adding spin rotations and after an appropriate transformation. Furthermore, our result prompts novel approximate analytical solutions to the dynamics of the quantum Rabi model in the ultrastrong coupling regime improving previous approaches.

Noise-resilient architecture of a hybrid electron-nuclear quantum register in diamond

A hybrid quantum register consisting of nuclear spins in a solid-state platform coupled to a central electron spin is expected to combine the advantages of its elements. However, the potential to exploit long nuclear spin coherence times is severely limited by magnetic noise from the central electron spin during external interrogation. We overcome this obstacle and present protocols for addressing a decoherence-free nuclear spin subspace, which was not accessible by previously existing methods. We demonstrate the efficacy of our protocols using detailed numerical simulations of a nitrogen-vacancy centre with nearby $^{13}$C nuclei, and show that the resulting hybrid quantum register is immune to electron spin noise and external magnetic field drifts. Our work takes an important step toward realizing robust quantum registers that can be easily manipulated, entangled, and, at the same time, well isolated from external noise, with applications from quantum information processing and communication to quantum sensing.

Double-path dark-state laser cooling in a three-level system

We present a detailed analysis of a robust and fast laser cooling scheme [J. Cerrillo et al.,Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 043003 (2010)] on a three-level system. A special laser configuration, applicable to trapped ions, atoms, or cantilevers, designs a double-path quantum interference that eliminates the blue sideband in addition to the carrier transition, thus excluding any heating process involving up to one-phonon interactions. As a consequence, cooling achieves vanishing phonon occupation up to first order in the Lamb-Dicke parameter expansion. Underlying this scheme is a combined action of two cooling schemes which makes the proposal very flexible under constraints of the physical parameters such as laser intensity, detuning, or optical access, making it a viable candidate for experimental implementation. Furthermore, it is considerably faster than existing ground state cooling schemes. Its suitability as a cooling scheme for several ions in a trap and three-dimensional cooling is shown.

Controllable Non-Markovianity for a Spin Qubit in Diamond

We present a flexible scheme to realize non-artificial non-Markovian dynamics of an electronic spin qubit, using a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond where the inherent nitrogen spin serves as a regulator of the dynamics. By changing the population of the nitrogen spin, we show that we can smoothly tune the non-Markovianity of the electron spin's dynamic. Furthermore, we examine the decoherence dynamics induced by the spin bath to exclude other sources of non-Markovianity. The amount of collected measurement data is kept at a minimum by employing Bayesian data analysis. This allows for a precise quantification of the parameters involved in the description of the dynamics and a prediction of so far unobserved data points.

Observation of Floquet Raman transition in a driven solid-state spin system

We experimentally observe Floquet Raman transitions in the weakly driven solid state spin system of nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. The periodically driven spin system simulates a two-band Wannier-Stark ladder model, and allows us to observe coherent spin state transfer arising from Raman transition mediated by Floquet synthetic levels. It also leads to the prediction of analog photon-assisted Floquet Raman transition and dynamical localisation in a driven two-level quantum system. The demonstrated rich Floquet dynamics offers new capabilities to achieve effective Floquet coherent control of a quantum system with potential applications in various types of quantum technologies based on driven quantum dynamics. In particular, the Floquet-Raman system may be used as a quantum simulator for the physics of periodically driven systems.

Improving the precision of frequency estimation via long-time coherences

In the last years several estimation strategies have been formulated to determine the value of an unknown parameter in the most precise way, taking into account the presence of noise. These strategies typically rely on the use of quantum entanglement between the sensing probes and they have been shown to be optimal in the asymptotic limit in the number of probes, as long as one performs measurements on shorter and shorter time scales. Here, we present a different approach to frequency estimation, which exploits quantum coherence in the state of each sensing particle in the long time limit and is obtained by properly engineering the environment. By means of a commonly used master equation, we show that our strategy can overcome the precision achievable with entanglement-based strategies for a finite number of probes. We discuss a possible implementation of the scheme in a realistic setup that uses trapped ions as quantum sensors.

Analog Quantum Simulation of Extremely Sub-Ohmic Spin-Boson Models

We propose a scheme for the quantum simulation of sub-Ohmic spin--boson models by color centers in free-standing hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) membranes. The electronic spin of a color center that couples to the membrane vibrational spectrum constitute the physical model. The spin-motion coupling is provided by an external magnetic field gradient. In this study, we show that a class of spectral densities can be attained by engineering geometry and boundary conditions of the h-BN resonator. We then put our focus on two extreme cases, i.e. $1/f$- and white-noise spectral densities. Spin coherence and polarization dynamics are studied. Our calculations show coherence revivals at periods set by the bath characteristic frequency signaling the non-Markovian nature of the baths. The nonequilibrium dynamics of the spin polarization exhibits a coherent localization, a property peculiar to the quantum phase transition in extremely sub-Ohmic spin-boson models. Our scheme may find application in understanding sources of decoherence in solid-state quantum bits.

Quantum-optical tests of Planck-scale physics

Recently it was proposed to use cavity-optomechanical systems to test for quantum gravity corrections to quantum canonical commutation relations [Nat. Phys. 8, 393-397 (2012)]. Improving the achievable precision of such devices represents a major challenge that we address with our present work. More specifically, we develop sophisticated paths in phase-space of such optomechanical system to obtain significantly improved accuracy and precision under contributions from higher-order corrections to the optomechanical Hamiltonian. An accurate estimate of the required number of experimental runs is presented based on a rigorous error analysis that accounts for mean photon number uncertainty, which can arise from classical fluctuations or from quantum shot noise in measurement. Furthermore, we propose a method to increase precision by using squeezed states of light. Finally, we demonstrate the robustness of our scheme to experimental imperfection, thereby improving the prospects of carrying out tests of quantum gravity with near-future optomechanical technology.

Color centers in hexagonal boron nitride monolayers: A group theory and ab-initio analysis

We theoretically study physical properties of the most promising color center candidates for the recently observed single-photon emissions in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) monolayers. Through our group theory analysis combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations we provide several pieces of evidence that the electronic properties of the color centers match the characters of the experimentally observed emitters. We calculate the symmetry-adapted multi-electron wavefunctions of the defects using group theory methods and analyze the spin-orbit and spin-spin interactions in detail. We also identify the radiative and non-radiative transition channels for each color center. An advanced ab-initio DFT method is then used to compute energy levels of the color centers and their zero-phonon-line (ZPL) emissions. The computed ZPLs, the profile of excitation and emission dipole polarizations, and the competing relaxation processes are discussed and matched with the observed emission lines. By providing evidence for the relation between single-photon emitters and local defects in h-BN, this work provides the first steps towards harnessing quantum dynamics of these color centers.

Observation of Entangled States of a Fully Controlled 20-Qubit System

We generate and characterise entangled states of a register of 20 individually controlled qubits, where each qubit is encoded into the electronic state of a trapped atomic ion. Entanglement is generated amongst the qubits during the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of an Ising-type Hamiltonian, engineered via laser fields. Since the qubit-qubit interactions decay with distance, entanglement is generated at early times predominantly between neighbouring groups of qubits. We characterise entanglement between these groups by designing and applying witnesses for genuine multipartite entanglement. Our results show that, during the dynamical evolution, all neighbouring qubit pairs, triplets, most quadruplets, and some quintuplets simultaneously develop genuine multipartite entanglement. Witnessing genuine multipartite entanglement in larger groups of qubits in our system remains an open challenge.
