Fingerprints of supersymmetric spin and charge dynamics observed by inelastic neutron scattering

Supersymmetry is an algebraic property of a quantum Hamiltonian that, by giving every boson a fermionic superpartner and vice versa, may underpin physics beyond the Standard Model. Fractional bosonic and fermionic quasiparticles are familiar in condensed matter, as in the spin and charge excitations of the $t$-$J$ model describing electron dynamics in one-dimensional materials, but this type of symmetry is almost unknown. However, the triplet excitations of a quantum spin ladder in an applied magnetic field provide a supersymmetric analogue of the $t$-$J$ chain. Here we perform neutron spectroscopy on the spin-ladder compounds (C$_5$D$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ and (C$_5$D$_{12}$N)$_2$CuCl$_4$ over a range of applied fields and temperatures, and apply matrix-product-state methods to the ladder and equivalent chain models. From the momentum-resolved dynamics of a single charge-like excitation in a bath of fractional spins, we find essential differences in thermal broadening between the supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric sectors. The persistence of a strict zone-centre pole at all temperatures constitutes an observable consequence of supersymmetry that marks the beginning of supersymmetric studies in experimental condensed matter.

Exchange renormalized crystal field excitation in a quantum Ising magnet KTmSe$_2$

Rare-earth delafossite compounds, ARCh$_2$ (A = alkali or monovalent ion, R = rare earth, Ch = chalcogen), have been proposed for a range of novel quantum phenomena. Particularly, the Tm series, ATmCh$_2$, featuring Tm ions on a triangular lattice, serves as a representative group of compounds to illustrate the interplay and competition between spin-orbit coupling, crystal fields, and exchange couplings in the presence of geometric frustration. Here we report the thermodynamic and inelastic neutron scattering studies on the newly discovered triangular-lattice magnet KTmSe$_2$. Both heat capacity and neutron diffraction reveal the absence of long-range magnetic order. Magnetic susceptibility shows strong Ising-like interactions with antiferromagnetic correlations. Furthermore, inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal a branch of dispersive crystal field excitations. To analyze these observations, we employ both the transverse field Ising model and the full crystal field scheme, along with exchange interactions. Our results suggest a strong competition between spin exchange interactions and crystal field effects. This work is expected to offer a valuable framework for understanding low-temperature magnetism in KTmSe$_2$ and similar materials.

Universality of the {\bf q}=1/2 Orbital Magnetism in the Pseudogap Phase of the High-$T_c$ superconductor $\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+x}$

Several decades of debate have centered around the nature of the enigmatic pseudo-gap state in high temperature superconducting copper oxides. Recently, we reported polarized neutron diffraction measurements that suggested the existence of a magnetic texture bound to the pseudo-gap phase [Bounoua, {\it et al}. Communications Physics 5, 268 (2022)]. Such a magnetic texture is likely to involve the spontaneous appearance of loop currents within the CuO$_2$ unit cells, which give birth to complex correlated patterns. In the underdoped ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.6}}$, the magnetic structure factor of such an orbital magnetic texture gives rise to two distinct magnetic responses at {\bf q}=0 and {\bf q}=1/2. As this pattern alters the lattice translation invariance, such a state of matter could contribute to an instability of the Fermi surface. Here, we report polarized neutron scattering measurements on a nearly optimally doped high quality single crystal of ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.9}}$ that exhibits the same {\bf q}=1/2 magnetism and a weakly overdoped ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7}}$ sample where this signal is no longer sizeable. The in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic neutron scattering intensities in ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.9}}$ (at {\bf q}=1/2) and ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.85}}$ (at {\bf q}=0), reported previously, display the same temperature dependent hallmarks. The magnitudes of both {\bf q}=0 and {\bf q}=1/2 magnetic signals further exhibit the same trends upon doping in ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+x}}$, confirming that they are likely intertwined.

Gradual emergence of superconductivity in underdoped LSCO

We present triple-axis neutron scattering studies of low-energy magnetic fluctuations in strongly underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ with $x=0.05$, $0.06$ and $0.07$, providing quantitative evidence for a direct competition between these fluctuations and superconductivity. At dopings $x=0.06$ and $x=0.07$, three-dimensional superconductivity is found, while only a very weak signature of two-dimensional superconductivity residing in the CuO$_2$ planes is detectable for $x=0.05$. We find a surprising suppression of the low-energy fluctuations by an external magnetic field at all three dopings. This implies that the response of two-dimensional superconductivity to a magnetic field is similar to that of a bulk superconductor. Our results provide direct evidence of a very gradual onset of superconductivity in cuprates.

Hidden Magnetic Texture in the Pseudogap Phase of High-Tc $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.6}$

Despite decades of intense researches, the enigmatic pseudo-gap (PG) phase of superconducting cuprates remains an unsolved mystery. In the last 15 years, various symmetry breakings in the PG state have been discovered, spanning an intra-unit cell (IUC) magnetism, preserving the lattice translational (LT) symmetry but breaking time-reversal symmetry and parity, and an additional incipient charge density wave breaking the LT symmetry upon cooling. However, none of these states can (alone) account for the partial gapping of the Fermi surface. Here we report a hidden LT-breaking magnetism uisng polarized neutron diffraction. Our measurements reveal magnetic correlations, in two different underdoped $\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.6}$ single crystals, that settle at the PG onset temperature with i) a planar propagation wave vector $(π,0) \equiv (0,π)$, yielding a doubling or quadrupling of the magnetic unit cell and ii) magnetic moments mainly pointing perpendicular to the $CuO_{2}$ layers. The LT-breaking magnetism is at short range suggesting the formation of clusters of 5-6 unit cells. Together with the previously reported IUC magnetism, it yields a hidden magnetic texture of the $CuO_{2}$ unit cells hosting loop currents, forming large supercells which may be crucial for elucidating the PG puzzle.

Evolution of magnetic stripes under uniaxial stress in La$_{1.885}$Ba$_{0.115}$CuO$_4$ studied by neutron scattering

Here we present the effect of uniaxial stress on the magnetic stripes in the cuprate system La$_{2-x}$Ba$_{x}$CuO$_4$ with $x = 0.115$, previously found to have a stress-induced enhancement in the superconducting transition temperature. By means of neutron scattering, we show that the static stripes are suppressed by stress, pointing towards a trade-off between superconductivity and static magnetism, in direct agreement with previously reported $μ$SR measurements. Additionally, we show that some of the reduced weight in the elastic channel appears to have moved to the inelastic channel. Moreover, a stress-induced momentum shift of the fluctuations towards the typical 1/8 value of commensurability is observed. These results impose a strong constraint on the theoretical interpretation of stress-enhanced superconductivity in cuprate systems.

Field-Tuned Quantum Effects in a Triangular-Lattice Ising Magnet

We report thermodynamic and neutron scattering measurements of the triangular-lattice quantum Ising magnet TmMgGaO 4 in longitudinal magnetic fields. Our experiments reveal a quasi-plateau state induced by quantum fluctuations. This state exhibits an unconventional non-monotonic field and temperature dependence of the magnetic order and excitation gap. In the high field regime where the quantum fluctuations are largely suppressed, we observed a disordered state with coherent magnon-like excitations despite the suppression of the spin excitation intensity. Through detailed semi-classical calculations, we are able to understand these behaviors quantitatively from the subtle competition between quantum fluctuations and frustrated Ising interactions.

Solitonic excitations in the Ising anisotropic chain BaCo2V2O8 under large transverse magnetic field

We study the dynamics of the quasi-one-dimensional Ising-Heisenberg antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8 under a transverse magnetic field. Combining inelastic neutron scattering experiments and theoretical analyses by field theories and numerical simulations, we mainly elucidate the structure of the spin excitation spectrum in the high field phase, appearing above the quantum phase transition point mu0Hc ~ 10 T. We find that it is characterized by collective solitonic excitations superimposed on a continuum. These solitons are strongly bound in pairs due to the effective staggered field induced by the nondiagonal g tensor of the compound, and are topologically different from the fractionalized spinons in the weak field region. The dynamical susceptibility numerically calculated with the infinite time-evolving block decimation method shows an excellent agreement with the measured spectra, which enables us to identify the dispersion branches with elementary excitations. The lowest energy dispersion has an incommensurate nature and has a local minimum at an irrational wave number due to the applied transverse field.

Triplons, Magnons, and Spinons in a Single Quantum Spin System: SeCuO3

Quantum spin systems exhibit an enormous range of collective excitations, but their spin waves, gapped triplons, fractional spinons, or yet other modes are generally held to be mutually exclusive. Here we show by neutron spectroscopy on SeCuO$_3$ that magnons, triplons, and spinons are present simultaneously. We demonstrate that this is a consequence of a structure consisting of two coupled subsystems and identify all the interactions of a minimal magnetic model. Our results serve qualitatively to open the field of multi-excitation spin systems and quantitatively to constrain the complete theoretical description of one member of this class of materials.

Fractional antiferromagnetic skyrmion lattice induced by anisotropic couplings

Magnetic skyrmions are topological solitons with a nanoscale winding spin texture that hold promise for spintronics applications. Until now, skyrmions have been observed in a variety of magnets that exhibit nearly parallel alignment for the neighbouring spins, but theoretically, skyrmions with anti-parallel neighbouring spins are also possible. The latter, antiferromagnetic skyrmions, may allow more flexible control compared to the conventional ferromagnetic skyrmions. Here, by combining neutron scattering and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that a fractional antiferromagnetic skyrmion lattice with an incipient meron character is stabilized in MnSc$_2$S$_4$ through anisotropic couplings. Our work demonstrates that the theoretically proposed antiferromagnetic skyrmions can be stabilized in real materials and represents an important step towards implementing the antiferromagnetic-skyrmion based spintronic devices.

Nature of the magnetic stripes in fully oxygenated La$_{2}$CuO$_{4+y}$

We present triple-axis neutron scattering studies of static and dynamic magnetic stripes in an optimally oxygen-doped cuprate superconductor, La$_{2}$CuO$_{4+y}$, which exhibits a clean superconducting transition at $T_{\rm c}=42$ K. Polarization analysis reveals that the magnetic stripe structure is equally represented along both of the tetragonal crystal axes and that the fluctuating stripes display significant weight for in-plane as well as out-of-plane spin components. Both static magnetic order as well as low-energy fluctuations are fully developed in zero applied magnetic field and the low-energy spin fluctuations at $\hbar ω= 0.3-10$ meV intensify upon cooling. We interpret this as an indication that superconductivity and low-energy spin fluctuations co-exist microscopically in spatial regions which are separated from domains with static magnetic order.

Dispersions of Many-Body Bethe strings

Complex bound states of magnetic excitations, known as Bethe string, were predicted almost a century ago to exist in one-dimensional quantum magnets 1. The dispersions of the string states have so far remained the subject of intensive theoretical studies 2-7. By performing neutron scattering experiments on the one-dimensional Heisenberg-Ising antiferromagnet SrCo2V2O8 in high longitudinal magnetic fields, we reveal in detail the dispersion relations of the string states over the full Brillouin zone, as well as their magnetic field dependences. Furthermore the characteristic energy, the scattering intensity and linewidth of the observed string states exhibit excellent agreement with our precise Bethe Ansatz calculations. Our results establish the important role of string states in the quantum spin dynamics of one-dimensional systems, and will invoke studies of their dynamical properties in more general many-body systems.

Anomalous Dispersion of LO Phonons in Oxygen-Doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4+δ}$

Inelastic neutron scattering has been used to study the in-plane Cu-O bond-stretching mode in oxygen doped La$_{1.94}$Sr$_{0.06}$CuO$_{4.035}$ ($T_c = 38\,\text{K}$) and La$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ ($T_c = 43\,\text{K}$). Similar to results from optimally doped La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$ ($T_c = 35\,\text{K}$), we observe anomalous features in the dispersion of this half-breathing mode in the form of a softening halfway through the Brillouin Zone. Considering the differences in electronic structure and local environment between the oxygen- and strontium-doped compounds with similar $T_\text{c}$, we rule out a connection between the phonon anomaly and structural instabilities related to the specific dopant type. We interpret the phonon anomaly as a signature of correlated charge fluctuations possibly connected to stripes.

Low-energy spin dynamics of orthoferrites AFeO$_3$ (A = Y, La, Bi)

YFeO$_3$ and LaFeO$_3$ are members of the rare-earth orthoferrites family with \textit{Pbnm} space group. Using inelastic neutron scattering, the low-energy spin excitations have been measured around magnetic Brillouin zone center. Splitting of magnon branches and non-zero magnon gap is observed for both compounds, which is similar to the behavior observed in multiferroic BiFeO$_3$. Spin wave calculations which include both Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions and single-ion anisotropy in the spin-Hamiltonian comprehensively accounts for all the experimentally observed features. Our results offer insight into the unifying physics underlying the Fe$^{3+}$-based perovskites as well as their distinguishing characteristics.

Observation of a 4-spin Plaquette Singlet State in the Shastry-Sutherland compound SrCu2(BO3)2

The study of interacting spin systems is of fundamental importance for modern condensed matter physics. On frustrated lattices, magnetic exchange interactions cannot be simultaneously satisfied, and often give rise to competing exotic ground states. The frustrated 2D Shastry-Sutherland lattice realized by SrCu2(BO3)2 is an important test to our understanding of quantum magnetism. It was constructed to have an exactly solvable 2-spin dimer singlet ground state within a certain range of exchange parameters and frustration. While the exact dimer state and the antiferromagnetic order at both ends of the phase diagram are well known, the ground state and spin correlations in the intermediate frustration range have been widely debated. We report here the first experimental identification of the conjectured plaquette singlet intermediate phase in SrCu2(BO3)2. It is observed by inelastic neutron scattering after pressure tuning at 21.5 kbar. This gapped plaquette singlet state with strong 4-spin correlations leads to a transition to an ordered Neel state above 40 kbar, which can realize a deconfined quantum critical point.

Magnetic structures in the rich magnetic phase diagram of Ho$_2$RhIn$_8$

The magnetic phase diagram of the tetragonal Ho$_2$RhIn$_8$ compound has similar features to many related systems, revealing a zero magnetic field AF1 and a field-induced AF2 phases. Details of the magnetic order in the AF2 phase were not reported yet for any of the related compounds. In addition, only the Ho$_2$RhIn$_8$ phase diagram contains a small region of the incommensurate zero-field AF3 phase. We have performed a number of neutron diffraction experiments on single crystals of Ho$_2$RhIn$_8$ using several diffractometers including experiments in both horizontal and vertical magnetic fields up to 4 T. We present details of the magnetic structures in all magnetic phases of the rich phase diagram of Ho$_2$RhIn$_8$. The Ho magnetic moments point along the tetragonal $c$ axis in every phase. The ground-state AF1 phase is characterized by propagation vector $\textbf{k}$ = (1/2, 0, 0). The more complex ferrimagnetic AF2 phase is described by four propagation vectors $\textbf{k}_{0}$ = (0, 0, 0), $\textbf{k}_{1}$ = (1/2, 0, 0), $\textbf{k}_{2}$ = (0, 1/2, 1/2), $\textbf{k}_{3}$ = (1/2, 1/2, 1/2). The magnetic structure in the AF3 phase is incommensurate with $\textbf{k}_{AF3}$ = (0.5, $δ$, 0). Our results are consistent with theoretical calculations based on crystal field theory.

Incommensurate antiferromagnetic order in the manifoldly-frustrated SrTb$_2$O$_4$ with transition temperature up to 4.28 K

The N$\acute{\rm e}$el temperature of the new frustrated family of Sr\emph{RE}$_2$O$_4$ (\emph{RE} = rare earth) compounds is yet limited to $\sim$ 0.9 K, which more or less hampers a complete understanding of the relevant magnetic frustrations and spin interactions. Here we report on a new frustrated member to the family, SrTb$_2$O$_4$ with a record $T_{\rm N}$ = 4.28(2) K, and an experimental study of the magnetic interacting and frustrating mechanisms by polarized and unpolarized neutron scattering. The compound SrTb$_2$O$_4$ displays an incommensurate antiferromagnetic (AFM) order with a transverse wave vector \textbf{Q}$^{\rm 0.5 K}_{\rm AFM}$ = (0.5924(1), 0.0059(1), 0) albeit with partially-ordered moments, 1.92(6) $μ_{\rm B}$ at 0.5 K, stemming from only one of the two inequivalent Tb sites mainly by virtue of their different octahedral distortions. The localized moments are confined to the \emph{bc} plane, 11.9(66)$^\circ$ away from the \emph{b} axis probably by single-ion anisotropy. We reveal that this AFM order is dominated mainly by dipole-dipole interactions and disclose that the octahedral distortion, nearest-neighbour (NN) ferromagnetic (FM) arrangement, different next NN FM and AFM configurations, and in-plane anisotropic spin correlations are vital to the magnetic structure and associated multiple frustrations. The discovery of the thus far highest AFM transition temperature renders SrTb$_2$O$_4$ a new friendly frustrated platform in the family for exploring the nature of magnetic interactions and frustrations.

Magnetic structures of non-cerium analogues of heavy-fermion Ce2RhIn8: case of Nd2RhIn8, Dy2RhIn8 and Er2RhIn8

R2RhIn8 compounds (space group P4/mmm, R is a rare-earth element) belong to a large group of structurally related tetragonal materials which involves several heavy-fermion superconductors based on Ce. We have succeeded to grow single crystals of compounds with Nd, Dy and Er and following our previous bulk measurements, we performed neutron-diffraction studies to determine their magnetic structures. The Laue diffraction experiment showed that the antiferromagnetic order below the Néel temperature is in all three compounds characterized by the propagation vector k = (1/2, 1/2, 1/2). The amplitude and direction of the magnetic moments, as well as the invariance symmetry of the magnetic structure, were determined by subsequent experiments using two- and four-circle diffractometers. The critical exponents were determined from the temperature dependence of the intensities below TN.
