Physical implications of a fundamental period of time

If time is described by a fundamental process rather than a coordinate, it interacts with any physical system that evolves in time. The resulting dynamics is shown here to be consistent provided the fundamental period of the time system is sufficiently small. A strong upper bound T_C < 10^{-33}s of the fundamental period of time, several orders of magnitude below any direct time measurement, is obtained from bounds on dynamical variations of the period of a system evolving in time.

Critical evaluation of common claims in loop quantum cosmology

A large number of models have been analyzed in loop quantum cosmology, using mainly minisuperspace constructions and perturbations. At the same time, general physics principles from effective field theory and covariance have often been ignored. A consistent introduction of these ingredients requires substantial modifications of existing scenarios. As a consequence, none of the broader claims made mainly by the Ashtekar school --- such as the genericness of bounces with astonishingly semiclassical dynamics, robustness with respect to quantization ambiguities, the realization of covariance, and the relevance of certain technical results for potential observations --- hold up to scrutiny. Several useful lessons for a sustainable version of quantum cosmology can be drawn from this outcome.

Non-covariance of the dressed-metric approach in loop quantum cosmology

The dressed-metric approach is shown to violate general covariance by demonstrating that it cannot have an off-shell completion in which the correct infinitesimal relations of space-time hypersurface deformations are realized. The main underlying reason -- a separation of background degrees of freedom and modes of inhomogeneity that is incompatible with covariance -- is shared with other approaches such as hybrid loop quantum cosmology.

Deformed covariance in spherically symmetric vacuum models of loop quantum gravity: Consistency in Euclidean and self-dual gravity

Different versions of consistent canonical realizations of hypersurface deformations of spherically symmetric space-times have been derived in models of loop quantum gravity, modifying the classical dynamics and sometimes also the structure of space-time. Based on a canonical version of effective field theory, this paper provides a unified treatment, showing that modified space-time structures are generic in this setting. The special case of Euclidean gravity demonstrates agreement also with existing operator calculations.

Properties of fluctuating states in loop quantum cosmology

In loop quantum cosmology, the values of volume fluctuations and correlations determine whether the dynamics of an evolving state exhibits a bounce. Of particular interest are states that are supported only on either the positive or the negative part of the spectrum of the Hamiltonian that generates this evolution. It is shown here that the restricted support on the spectrum does not significantly limit the possible values of volume fluctuations.

Non-bouncing solutions in loop quantum cosmology

According to the Belinskii-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz scenario, a collapsing universe approaching a spacelike singularity can be approximated by homogeneous cosmological dynamics, but only if asymptotically small spatial regions are considered. It is shown here that the relevant small-volume behavior in solvable models of loop quantum cosmology is crucially different from the large-volume behavior exclusively studied so far. While bouncing solutions exist and may even be generic within a given quantum representation, they are not generic if quantization ambiguities such as choices of representations are taken into account. The analysis reveals an interesting interplay between sl(2,R)-representation theory and canonical effective theory.

Effective Field Theory of Loop Quantum Cosmology

Quantum cosmology is traditionally formulated in a minisuperspace setting, implicitly averaging fields over space to obtain homogeneous models. For universal reasons related to the uncertainty principle, quantum corrections then depend on the size of the averaging volume. In minisuperspace truncations, the value of this volume remains an arbitrary parameter devoid of physical meaning, but in an effective field theory it is identified with the infrared scale of inhomogeneous modes. Moreover, the infrared scale is running during gravitational collapse, when regions in which homogeneity remains approximately valid shrink to increasingly smaller co-moving sizes. Conceptual implications of this infrared renormalization for perturbative inhomogeneity in quantum cosmology are presented here, mainly for the example of loop quantum cosmology. Several claims made in this framework are altered by infrared renormalization.

Minisuperspace results for causal dynamical triangulations

Detailed applications of minisuperspace methods are presented and compared with results obtained in recent years by means of causal dynamical triangulations (CDTs), mainly in the form of effective actions. The analysis sheds light on conceptual questions such as the treatment of time or the role and scaling behavior of statistical and quantum fluctuations. In the case of fluctuations, several analytical and numerical results show agreement between the two approaches and offer possible explanations of effects that have been seen in causal dynamical triangulations but whose origin remained unclear. The new approach followed here suggests `CDT experiments' in the form of new simulations or evaluations motivated by theoretical predictions, testing CDTs as well as the minisuperspace approximation.

Equivalence of models in loop quantum cosmology and group field theory

The paradigmatic models often used to highlight cosmological features of loop quantum gravity and group field theory are shown to be equivalent, in the sense that they are different realizations of the same model given by harmonic cosmology. The loop version of harmonic cosmology is a canonical realization, while the group-field version is a bosonic realization. The existence of a large number of bosonic realizations suggests generalizations of models in group field cosmology.

Loops rescue the no-boundary proposal

New and non-trivial properties of off-shell instantons in loop quantum cosmology show that dynamical signature change naturally cures recently observed problems in the semiclassical path integral of quantum gravity. If left unsolved, these problems would doom any theory of smooth initial conditions of the universe. The no-boundary proposal, as a specific example of such a theory, is rescued by loops, presenting a rare instance of a fruitful confluence of different approaches to quantum cosmology.

Effective line elements and black-hole models in canonical (loop) quantum gravity

Canonical quantization is often used to suggest new effects in quantum gravity, in the dynamics as well as the structure of space-time. Usually, possible phenomena are first seen in a modified version of the classical dynamics, for instance in an effective Friedmann equation, but there should also be implications for a modified space-time structure. Quantum space-time effects, however, are often ignored in this setting because they are not obvious: they require a careful analysis of gauge transformations and the anomaly problem. It is shown here how modified space-time structures and effective line elements can be derived unambiguously, provided an off-shell anomaly-free system of modified constraints exists. The resulting effective line elements reveal signature change as an inescapable consequence of non-classical gauge transformations in the presence of holonomy modifications. The general framework is then specialized to black-hole models in loop quantum gravity. In contrast to previous studies, a self-consistent space-time structure is taken into account, leading to a new picture of black-hole interiors.

Effective potentials from semiclassical truncations

Canonical variables for the Poisson algebra of quantum moments are introduced here, expressing semiclassical quantum mechanics as a canonical dynamical system that extends the classical phase space. New realizations for up to fourth order in moments for a single classical degree of freedom and to second order for a pair of classical degrees of freedom are derived and applied to several model systems. It is shown that these new canonical variables facilitate the derivation of quantum-statistical quantities and effective potentials. Moreover, by formulating quantum dynamics in classical language, these methods result in new heuristic pictures, for instance of tunneling, that can guide further investigations.

Canonical Tunneling Time in Ionization Experiments

Canonical semiclassical methods can be used to develop an intuitive definition of tunneling time through potential barriers. An application to atomic ionization is given here, considering both static and time-dependent electric fields. The results allow one to analyze different theoretical constructions proposed recently to evaluate ionization experiments based on attoclocks. They also suggest new proposals of determining tunneling times, for instance through the behavior of fluctuations.

Faithful realizations of semiclassical truncations

Realizations of algebras in terms of canonical or bosonic variables can often be used to simplify calculations and to exhibit underlying properties. There is a long history of using such methods in order to study symmetry groups related to collective motion, for instance in nuclear shell models. Here, related questions are addressed for algebras obtained by turning the quantum commutator into a Poisson bracket on moments of a quantum state, truncated to a given order. In this application, canonical realizations allow one to express the quantum back-reaction of moments on basic expectation values by means of effective potentials. In order to match degrees of freedom, faithfulness of the realization is important, which requires that, at least locally, the space of moments as a Poisson manifold is realized by a complete set of Casimir-Darboux coordinates in local charts. A systematic method to derive such variables is presented and applied to certain sets of moments which are important for physical applications. If only second-order moments are considered, their Poisson-bracket relations are isomorphic to the Lie bracket of sp(2N,R), providing an interesting link with realizations of nuclear shell models.

Small magnetic charges and monopoles in non-associative quantum mechanics

Weak magnetic monopoles with a continuum of charges less than the minimum implied by Dirac's quantization condition may be possible in non-associative quantum mechanics. If a weakly magnetically charged proton in a hydrogen atom perturbs the standard energy spectrum only slightly, magnetic charges could have escaped detection. Testing this hypothesis requires entirely new methods to compute energy spectra in non-associative quantum mechanics. Such methods are presented here, and evaluated for upper bounds on the magnetic charge of elementary particles.

The BKL scenario, infrared renormalization, and quantum cosmology

A discussion of inhomogeneity is indispensable to understand quantum cosmology, even if one uses the dynamics of homogeneous geometries as a first approximation. While a full quantization of inhomogeneous gravity is not available, a broad framework of effective field theory provides important ingredients for quantum cosmology. Such a setting also allows one to take into account lessons from the Belinski-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz (BKL) scenario. Based on several new ingredients, this article presents conditions on various parameters and mathematical constructions that appear in minisuperspace models. Examples from different approaches demonstrate their restrictive nature.

Anomaly freedom in perturbative models of Euclidean loop quantum gravity

Euclidean gravity provides an interesting test system for an analysis of cosmological perturbations in an effective Hamiltonian constraint with holonomy modifications from loop quantum gravity. This paper presents a discussion of scalar modes, with a specific form of the holonomy modification function derived from a general expansion in a connection formulation. Compared with some previous models, the constraint brackets are deformed in a different and more restricted way. A general comparison of anomaly-free brackets in various effective and operator versions shows overall consistency between different approaches.
