The deformation quantization of certain super-Poisson brackets and BRST cohomology

On every split supermanifold equipped with the Rothstein even super-Poisson bracket we construct a deformation quantization by means of a Fedosov-type procedure. In other words, the supercommutative algebra of all smooth sections of the dual Grassmann algebra bundle of an arbitrarily given vector bundle E (equipped with a fibre metric) over a symplectic manifold M will be deformed by a series of bidifferential operators having first order supercommutator proportional to the Rothstein superbracket. Moreover, we discuss two constructions related to the above result, namely the quantized BRST-cohomology for a locally free Hamiltonian Lie group action (together with H.-C.Herbig and S.Waldmann) and the classical BRST cohomology in the general coistropic (or reducible) case without using a `ghosts of ghosts' scheme (together with H.-C.Herbig).

Description de la structure de certaines superalgèbres de Lie quadratiques via la notion de $T^*$-extension

In this note we introduce the notion of $T^*-$extension $T^*{\mathfrak g}$ of a Lie superalgebra ${\mathfrak g}$, i.e. an extension of ${\mathfrak g}$ by its dual space ${\mathfrak g}^*$. The natural pairing induces on $T^*{\mathfrak g}$ an even supersymmetric nondegenerate bilinear form $B$ which is invariant ($B([X,Y],Z)=B(X,[Y,Z])$ for all $X,Y,Z \in T^*{\mathfrak g}$), i.e. the structure of a quadratic (or metrised or orthogonal) Lie superalgebra. These extensions can be classified by the third even scalar cohomology group of ${\mathfrak g}$. Moreover, we show that all finite-dimensional quadratic Lie superalgebras ${\mathfrak a}={\mathfrak a}_{\bar{0}} \oplus {\mathfrak a}_{\bar{1}}$ which are either nilpotent, or solvable and such that $[{\mathfrak a}_{\bar{1}},{\mathfrak a}_{\bar{1}}]\subset [{\mathfrak a}_{\bar{0}},{\mathfrak a}_{\bar{0}}]$ can be constructed by means of a $T^*-$extension in the case of an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero.

BRST Cohomology and Phase Space Reduction in Deformation Quantisation

In this article we consider quantum phase space reduction when zero is a regular value of the momentum map. By analogy with the classical case we define the BRST cohomology in the framework of deformation quantization. We compute the quantum BRST cohomology in terms of a `quantum' Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology of the Lie algebra on the constraint surface. To prove this result, we construct an explicit chain homotopy, both in the classical and quantum case, which is constructed out of a prolongation of functions on the constraint surface. We have observed the phenomenon that the quantum BRST cohomology cannot always be used for quantum reduction, because generally its zero part is no longer a deformation of the space of all smooth functions on the reduced phase space. But in case the group action is `sufficiently nice', e.g. proper (which is the case for all compact Lie group actions), it is shown for a strongly invariant star product that the BRST procedure always induces a star product on the reduced phase space in a rather explicit and natural way. Simple examples and counter examples are discussed.

On representations of star product algebras over cotangent spaces on Hermitian line bundles

For every formal power series $B=B_0 + λB_1 + O(λ^2)$ of closed two-forms on a manifold $Q$ and every value of an ordering parameter $κ\in [0,1]$ we construct a concrete star product $\star^B_κ$ on the cotangent bundle $π: T^*Q\to Q$. The star product $\star^B_κ$ is associated to the formal symplectic form on $T^*Q$ given by the sum of the canonical symplectic form $ω$ and the pull-back of $B$ to $T^*Q$. Deligne's characteristic class of $\star^B_κ$ is calculated and shown to coincide with the formal de Rham cohomology class of $π^*B$ divided by $\imλ$. Therefore, every star product on $T^*Q$ corresponding to the Poisson bracket induced by the symplectic form $ω+ π^*B_0$ is equivalent to some $\star^B_kappa$. It turns out that every $\star^B_kappa$ is strongly closed. In this paper we also construct and classify explicitly formal representations of the deformed algebra as well as operator representations given by a certain global symbol calculus for pseudodifferential operators on $Q$. Moreover, we show that the latter operator representations induce the formal representations by a certain Taylor expansion. We thereby obtain a compact formula for the WKB expansion.

Quantum integrable Toda like systems

Using deformation quantization and suitable 2 by 2 quantum $R$-matrices we show that a list of Toda like classical integrable systems given by Y.B.Suris is quantum integrable in the sense that the classical conserved quantities (which are already in involution with respect to the Poisson bracket) commute with respect to the standard star-product of Weyl type in flat $2n$-dimensional space.

A Remark on Formal KMS States in Deformation Quantization

In the framework of deformation quantization we define formal KMS states on the deformed algebra of power series of functions with compact support in phase space as C[[λ]]-linear functionals obeying a formal variant of the usual KMS condition known in the theory of C^*-algebras. We show that for each temperature KMS states always exist and are up to a normalization equal to the trace of the argument multiplied by a formal analogue of the usual Boltzmann factor, a certain formal star exponential.

Homogeneous Fedosov Star Products on Cotangent Bundles II: GNS Representations, the WKB Expansion, and Applications

This paper is part II of a series of papers on the deformation quantization on the cotangent bundle of an arbitrary manifold $Q$. For certain homogeneous star products of Weyl ordered type (which we have obtained from a Fedosov type procedure in part I, see q-alg/9707030) we construct differential operator representations via the formal GNS construction (see q-alg/9607019). The positive linear functional is integration over $Q$ with respect to some fixed density and is shown to yield a reasonable version of the Schrödinger representation where a Weyl ordering prescription is incorporated. Furthermore we discuss simple examples like free particle Hamiltonians (defined by a Riemannian metric on $Q$) and the implementation of certain diffeomorphisms of $Q$ to unitary transformations in the GNS (pre-)Hilbert space and of time reversal maps (involutive anti-symplectic diffeomorphisms of $T^*Q$) to anti-unitary transformations. We show that the fixed-point set of any involutive time reversal map is either empty or a Lagrangean submanifold. Moreover, we compare our approach to concepts using integral formulas of generalized Moyal-Weyl type. Furthermore we show that the usual WKB expansion with respect to a projectable Lagrangean submanifold can be formulated by a GNS construction. Finally we prove that any homogeneous star product on any cotangent bundle is strongly closed, i. e. the integral over $T^*Q$ w.r.t. the symplectic volume vanishes on star-commutators. An alternative Fedosov type deduction of the star product of standard ordered type using a deformation of the algebra of symmetric contravariant tensor fields is given.

Formal GNS Construction and States in Deformation Quantization

In this paper we develop a method of constructing Hilbert spaces and the representation of the formal algebra of quantum observables in deformation quantization which is an analog of the well-known GNS construction for complex $C^*$-algebras: in this approach the corresponding positive linear functionals (`states') take their values not in the field of complex numbers, but in (a suitable extension field of) the field of formal complex Laurent series in the formal parameter. By using the algebraic and topological properties of these fields we prove that this construction makes sense and show in physical examples that standard representations as the Bargmann and Schrödinger representation come out correctly, both formally and in a suitable convergence scheme. For certain Hamiltonian functions (contained in the Gel'fand ideal of the positive functional) a formal solution to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation is shown to exist. Moreover, we show that for every Kähler manifold equipped with the Fedosov star product of Wick type all the classical delta functionals are positive and give rise to some formal Bargmann representation of the deformed algebra.

Homogeneous Fedosov Star Products on Cotangent Bundles I: Weyl and Standard Ordering with Differential Operator Representation

In this paper we construct homogeneous star products of Weyl type on every cotangent bundle $T^*Q$ by means of the Fedosov procedure using a symplectic torsion-free connection on $T^*Q$ homogeneous of degree zero with respect to the Liouville vector field. By a fibrewise equivalence transformation we construct a homogeneous Fedosov star product of standard ordered type equivalent to the homogeneous Fedosov star product of Weyl type. Representations for both star product algebras by differential operators on functions on $Q$ are constructed leading in the case of the standard ordered product to the usual standard ordering prescription for smooth complex-valued functions on $T^*Q$ polynomial in the momenta (where an arbitrary fixed torsion-free connection $\nabla_0$ on $Q$ is used). Motivated by the flat case $T^* R^n$ another homogeneous star product of Weyl type corresponding to the Weyl ordering prescription is constructed. The example of the cotangent bundle of an arbitrary Lie group is explicitly computed and the star product given by Gutt is rederived in our approach.

On the Deformation Quantization of super-Poisson Brackets

We show that for every vector bundle E over any given symplectic manifold M there exists an explicitly given super-Poisson bracket on the space of sections of the dual Grassmann bundle associated to E built out of symplectic structure of M, a fibre metric on E, and a connection in E compatible with the given fibre metric. Moreover, we construct a deformation quantization for this space of sections by means of a Fedosov type procedure.

Diffeomorphism Invariant Integrable Field Theories and Hypersurface Motions in Riemannian Manifolds

We discuss hypersurface motions in Riemannian manifolds whose normal velocity is a function of the induced hypersurface volume element and derive a second order partial differential equation for the corresponding time function $τ(x)$ at which the hypersurface passes the point $x$. Equivalently, these motions may be described in a Hamiltonian formulation as the singlet sector of certain diffeomorphism invariant field theories. At least in some (infinite class of) cases, which could be viewed as a large-volume limit of Euclidean $M$-branesmoving in an arbitrary $M+1$-dimensional Riemannian manifold, the models are integrable: In the time-function formulation the equation becomes linear (with $τ(x)$ a harmonic function on the embedding Riemannian manifold). We explicitly compute solutions to the large volume limit of Euclidean membrane dynamics in $\Real^3$ by methods used in electrostatics and point out an additional gradient flow structure in $\Real^n$. In the Hamiltonian formulation we discover infinitely many hierarchies of integrable, multidimensional, $N$-component theories possessing infinitely many diffeomorphism invariant, Poisson commuting, conserved charges.

Toeplitz Quantization of Kähler Manifolds and $gl(N)$ $N\to\infty$

For general compact Kähler manifolds it is shown that both Toeplitz quantization and geometric quantization lead to a well-defined (by operator norm estimates) classical limit. This generalizes earlier results of the authors and Klimek and Lesniewski obtained for the torus and higher genus Riemann surfaces, respectively. We thereby arrive at an approximation of the Poisson algebra by a sequence of finite-dimensional matrix algebras $gl(N)$, $N\to\infty$.

The Dynamics of Relativistic Membranes II: Nonlinear Waves and Covariantly Reduced Membrane Equations

By explicitly eliminating all gauge degrees of freedom in the $3+1$-gauge description of a classical relativistic (open) membrane moving in $\Real^3$ we derive a $2+1$-dimensional nonlinear wave equation of Born-Infeld type for the graph $z(t,x,y)$ which is invariant under the Poincaré group in four dimensions. Alternatively, we determine the world-volume of a membrane in a covariant way by the zeroes of a scalar field $u(t,x,y,z)$ obeying a homogeneous Poincaré-invariant nonlinear wave-equation. This approach also gives a simple derivation of the nonlinear gas dynamic equation obtained in the light-cone gauge.

The Dynamics of Relativistic Membranes I: Reduction to 2-dimensional Fluid Dynamics

We greatly simplify the light-cone gauge description of a relativistic membrane moving in Minkowski space by performing a field-dependent change of variables which allows the explicit solution of all constraints and a Hamiltonian reduction to a $SO(1,3)$ invariant $2+1$-dimensional theory of isentropic gas dynamics, where the pressure is inversely proportional to (minus) the mass-density. Simple expressions for the generators of the Poincaré group are given. We also find a generalized Lax pair which involves as a novel feature complex conjugation. The extension to the supersymmetric case, as well as to higher-dimensional minimal surfaces of codimension one is briefly mentioned.
