Evaluating the wild Brauer group

Classifying elements of the Brauer group of a variety X over a p-adic field according to the p-adic accuracy needed to evaluate them gives a filtration on Br X. We relate this filtration to that defined by Kato's Swan conductor. The refined Swan conductor controls how the evaluation maps vary on p-adic discs: this provides a geometric characterisation of the refined Swan conductor. We give applications to rational points on varieties over number fields, including failure of weak approximation for varieties admitting a non-zero global 2-form.

Finiteness theorems for K3 surfaces over arbitrary fields

Over an algebraically closed field, various finiteness results are known regarding the automorphism group of a K3 surface and the action of the automorphisms on the Picard lattice. We formulate and prove versions of these results over arbitrary base fields, and give examples illustrating how behaviour can differ from the algebraically closed case.

Bad reduction of the Brauer-Manin obstruction

We relate the Brauer group of a smooth variety over a p-adic field to the geometry of the special fibre of a regular model, using the purity theorem in \'etale cohomology. As an illustration, we describe how the Brauer group of a smooth del Pezzo surface is determined by the singularity type of its reduction. We then relate the evaluation of an element of the Brauer group to the existence of points on certain torsors over the special fibre; we use this to describe situations when the evaluation is constant, and situations when the evaluation is surjective. In the latter case, we describe how this surjectivity can be used to prove vanishing of the Brauer-Manin obstruction on varieties over number fields.

Brauer groups of singular del Pezzo surfaces

We describe the effect of rational singularities on the Brauer group of a surface, and compute the Brauer groups of all singular del Pezzo surfaces over an algebraically closed field.

Torsors under tori and Néron models

Let R be a Henselian discrete valuation ring with field of fractions K. If X is a smooth variety over K and G a torus over K, then we consider X-torsors under G. If XX/R is a model of X then, using a result of Brahm, we show that X-torsors under G extend to XX-torsors under a Néron model of G if G is split by a tamely ramified extension of K. It follows that the evaluation map associated to such a torsor factors through reduction to the special fibre. In this way we can use the geometry of the special fibre to study the arithmetic of X.

Evaluating Azumaya algebras on cubic surfaces

Let X be a cubic surface over a local number field k. Given an Azumaya algebra on X, we describe the local evaluation map X(k) -> Q/Z in two cases, showing a sharp dependence on the geometry of the reduction of X. We show that a suitably generic cubic surface over a number field, whose reduction at some prime is a cone, has no Brauer-Manin obstruction. This extends results of Colliot-Thélène, Kanevsky and Sansuc.
