Vectors and a half-disk of triangle shapes in Ionescu-Weitzenb\"ock's inequality

The aim of this note is to give two new conceptual proofs of Ionescu-Weitzenb\"ock's inequality. The first one, which is a vector proof, provides us a geometric interpretation of the difference between the two sides of this inequality and of two known corollary inequalities in differential geometry. Through a less classical approach, our second proof makes use of the properties of the set of triangles with a fixed "size", seen as a half-disk.

A dissection proof of the law of cosines, replacing Cuoco-McConnell's rectangles with congruent triangles

Taking up the challenge McConnell laid down at the end of his proof of the law of cosines, we give a completely visual dissection proof of this theorem, which applies to any triangle. In order to avoid the trigonometric expressions of Cuoco-McConnell's proof, we replaced the equal-area rectangles with congruent triangles. As a matter of fact, trigonometric expressions are implicitly based on the similarity of two right triangles with a common non-right angle. So they are conceptually less simple than our congruent triangles which are, moreover, easy to visualize. This makes our proof the only dissection proof and the simplest proof of its family, and thus one of the best options for a course of geometry.

On polygonal relative equilibria in the N-vortex problem

Helmholtz's equations provide the motion of a system of N vortices which describes a planar incompressible fluid with zero viscosity. A relative equilibrium is a particular solution of these equations for which the distances between the vortices are invariant during the motion. In this article, we are interested in relative equilibria formed of concentric regular polygons of vortices. We show that in the case of one regular polygon (and a possible vortex at the center) with more than three vertices (two if there is a vortex at the center), a relative equilibrium requires equal vorticities (on the polygon). We also determine all the relative equilibria with two concentric regular n-gons and the same vorticity on each n-gon. This result completes the classical studies for two regular n-gons when all the vortices have the same vorticity or when the total vorticity vanishes.

The central configurations of four masses x, -x, y, -y

The configuration of a homothetic motion in the N-body problem is called a central configuration. In this paper, we prove that there are exactly three planar non-collinear central configurations for masses x, -x, y, -y with x different from y (a parallelogram and two trapezoids) and two planar non-collinear central configurations for masses x, -x, x, -x (two diamonds). Except the case studied here, the only known case where the four-body central configurations with non-vanishing masses can be listed is the case with equal masses (Albouy, 1996), which requires the use of a symbolic computation program. Thanks to a lemma used in the proof of our result, we also show that a co-circular four-body central configuration has non-vanishing total mass or vanishing multiplier.
