The effect of side chain length on the mesomorphic properties of ferroelectric nematogens

The discovery of ferroelectric nematic phase opened new directions in the field of soft matter chemistry and physics. In this paper, we have modified a previously reported ferroelectric nematogen based on molecular structure with dimethylamino-terminated part. We have prepared two new homologues by prolonging a side chain and investigated the effect of its length on the mesomorphic properties. While previously reported homologues exhibited a direct phase transition from the isotropic (Iso) to the ferroelectric nematic phase (NF), for prolonged alkyl chain there is a narrow nematic phase (N) in between. For new compounds, we have established their mesomorphic and material properties. We have confirmed ferroelectricity of the NF phase by the polarization, SHG signal and permittivity. Finally, we have compared these parameters with respect to the side-chain length and discussed new effects, discovered for prolonged homologues due to the presence of an additional N phase.

The effect of fluorine or chlorine substitution on mesomorphic properties of ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals

Ferroelectric nematic phase (NF) represents an attractive and foremost field of liquid crystals, combining fluidity with ferroelectricity. NF materials exhibit large polarization values and remarkable non-linear optical properties. We have designed an original molecular structure with halogen substituents in the position of an electron donating group. In a prolonged molecular core, such a modification led to the presence of the ferroelectric nematic phase (NF) below the nematic one. Besides, an application of Cl atom in the molecular core of one of the presented materials has been utilized for the first time for ferroelectric nematogens. We have examined mesogenic behaviour and ferroelectric characteristics of the NF phase. In the NF phase for the cell with antiparallel rubbing, we have detected a textural transformation, which evidences strong polar character of anchoring at the surfaces. The presented results provide valuable insight into the design of ferroelectric nematic liquid crystalline compounds.

Tunable macroscopic defect patterns induced by a low-frequency AC electric field in ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals

Regulation of topological structures and pattern formation is attracting wide interest in the field of condensed matter. Liquid crystals (LCs) represent soft matter with a remarkable combination of fluidity and anisotropic properties. Topological defects may appear in confined LCs under external stimuli. Recently discovered ferroelectric nematics (NF) opened exceptional opportunities in technologies owing to high permittivity and polarisation. Polar properties of NF supply more variability to topological structures. In this research, we present tunable 2D topological defect arrays in NF compound, induced by an alternating (AC) electric field in simple sandwich cells without pre-patterning. The observed arrays of defects form pseudo-square lattices, which character and periodicity depend on the frequency of the applied field and partially on the cell thickness. The observed effect is explained to occur due to the competition between elastic and electrical forces. The proposed system can be useful to create reconfigurable spatially periodic polarisation structures.

Dual tunability of selective reflection by light and electric field for self-organizing materials

The oblique helicoidal structure is formed in right-angle cholesterics under the applied electric field. The electric field changes the pitch and cone angle but preserves the single-harmonic modulation of the refractive index. As a result, in such a supramolecular system, we can tune the selective reflection of light in a broad range. Here, we report that structural colors can be tuned by simultaneously illuminating the structure with UV light and the action of an electric field. The cholesterics with the oblique helicoidal structure were doped with newly designed rod-like, chiral, and bent-shaped azo-photosensitive materials characterized by a very low rate of thermal back isomerization. The isomerization of the photo-active compounds under UV light causes the red shift of the selective light reflection in the cholesteric mixtures. We found that the molecular structure of the photosensitive materials used affects the reflection coefficient, bandwidth, response time to UV irradiation, and tuning range. The effect was explained by considering the effect of molecular matching, cis-trans isomerization, and electric field action. We investigated the dynamics of molecular changes in the oblique helicoidal structure under the influence of external factors. The designed supramolecular system has the potential application in soft matter UV detectors.

Dimethylamino terminated ferroelectric nematogens revealing high permittivity

Since the recent discoveries, ferroelectric nematics became of upmost interest due to their outstanding ferroelectric properties. In this work, we prepared a series of polar molecules revealing a ferroelectric nematic phase (NF) with a very high dielectric constant (>104). A new motif, which differs from previously reported molecular structures, was optimized to support the NF phase. For all homologues the NF phase was observed directly on the cooling from the isotropic phase and ferroelectric behaviour was investigated by dielectric spectroscopy, second harmonic generation, polarization current measurements and by analysis of textures in the polarized light. The presented materials combine ferroelectricity with giant permittivity in a fluid media at room temperatures, so they appear to be extremely attractive. Polarity of molecules with the strong susceptibility to the electric field represent high potential for various applications in energy-efficient memory devices or capacitors.

Photoinduced split of the cavity mode in photonic crystals based on porous silicon filled with photochromic azobenzene-containing substances

The novel phototunable photonic structures based on electrochemically etched silicon filled with four photochromic azobenzene-containing compounds, bent-shaped low molar mass substance and side-chain polymethacrylates and copolyacrylate, were prepared and their photooptical properties were studied. It was found that irradiation of these composites with polarized blue light results in spectral changes in photonic band gap (split of the cavity mode) associated with cooperative photoorientation of azobenzene moieties inside silicon pores in direction perpendicular to the polarization plane of the incident light. Kinetics of the photoinduced split is studied. The observed phototoinduced split is completely reversible and heating of the composites to temperatures above isotropization or glass transitions fully recovers the initial spectral shape of photonic band gap. Thermal and temporal stability of the obtained photoinduced split were comparatively studied, and it was found that for composites with bent-shaped substance and polymethacrylate shape of the reflectance spectra does not change over time at room temperature. The prepared composites have high potential for the different applications in photonics.

Organic nanotubes created from mesogenic derivatives

A facile route to prepare the nanotubes from rod-like mesogens dissolved in typical organic solvents is reported. For selected types of chiral rod-like molecules, both enantiomers as well as the racemic mixtures formed the nanotubes by slow evaporation from a solution, regardless of the solvent, concentration or deposition type. Obtained supramolecular assemblies were studied using AFM and SEM techniques. Additional methods (IR, UV-Vis spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction) were applied to characterize the observed nanotubes. The difference in the surface tension at opposite crystallite surfaces is suggested as a possible mechanism for the nanotube nucleation.
