Viscous vortex crystals

We study the solution to the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations arising from a sum of Dirac masses in a particular co-rotating configuration. This configuration consists of a polygonal vortex crystal with or without a central vortex. By exploiting the symmetries and stability properties of the system, we describe and control the solution up to sub-diffusive time scales, prior to the expected onset of vortex merging.

Confinement results near point vortices on the rotating sphere

We study the Euler equation on the rotating sphere in the case where the absolute vorticity is initially sharply concentrated around several points. We follow the literature already concerning vorticity confinement for the planar Euler equations, and obtain similar results on the rotating sphere, with new challenges due to the geometry. More precisely, we show the improbability of collisions for point-vortices, logarithmic in time absolute vorticity confinement for general configurations, the optimality of this last result in general, and the existence of configurations with power-law long confinement. We take this opportunity to write a unified, self-contained, and improved version of all the proofs, previously scattered across multiple papers on the planar case, with detailed exposition for pedagogical clarity.

On the dynamics of leapfrogging vortex rings

The evolution of highly concentrated vorticity around rings in the three-dimensional axisymmetric Euler equations is studied in a regime for which the leapfrogging dynamics predicted by Helmholtz is expected to occur. We provide in this paper the first result deriving this phenomenon for a general class of initial data in the suitable regime. The singular interaction of rings requires significant improvements of weak and strong localization estimates obtained in prior works. Our method is based on the combination of a new variational argument and a recently introduced double iterative procedure.

Fast relaxation of a viscous vortex in an external flow

We study the evolution of a concentrated vortex advected by a smooth, divergence-free velocity field in two space dimensions. In the idealized situation where the initial vorticity is a Dirac mass, we compute an approximation of the solution which accurately describes, in the regime of high Reynolds numbers, the motion of the vortex center and the deformation of the streamlines under the shear stress of the external flow. For ill-prepared initial data, corresponding to a sharply peaked Gaussian vortex, we prove relaxation to the previous solution on a time scale that is much shorter than the diffusive time, due to enhanced dissipation inside the vortex core.

Long-time Confinement near Special Vortex Crystals

In this paper, we control the growth of the support of particular solutions to the Euler two-dimensional equations, whose vorticity is concentrated near special vortex crystals. These vortex crystals belong to the classical family of regular polygons with a central vortex, where we choose a particular intensity for the central vortex to have strong stability properties. A special case is the regular pentagon with no central vortex which also satisfies the stability properties required for the long-time confinement to work.

On the Dynamics of Point Vortices with Positive Intensities collapsing with the boundary

In this paper, we study the point-vortex dynamics with positive intensities. We show that in the half-plane and in a disk, collapses of point vortices with the boundary in finite time are impossible, hence the solution of the dynamics is global in time. We also give some necessary conditions for the existence of collapses with the boundary in general smooth bounded domains, in particular, that the trajectory of at least one point vortex has no limit. Some minor results are obtained with unsigned intensities.

Dynamics of helical vortex filaments in non viscous incompressible flows

In this paper we study concentrated solutions of the three-dimensional Euler equations in helical symmetry without swirl. We prove that any helical vorticity solution initially concentrated around helices of pairwise distinct radii remains concentrated close to filaments. As suggested by the vortex filament conjecture, we prove that those filaments are translating and rotating helices. Similarly to what is obtained in other frameworks, the localization is weak in the direction of the movement but strong in its normal direction, and holds on an arbitrary long time interval in the naturally rescaled time scale. In order to prove this result, we derive a new explicit formula for the singular part of the Biot-Savart kernel in a two-dimensional reformulation of the problem. This allows us to obtain an appropriate decomposition of the velocity field to reproduce recent methods used to describe the dynamics of vortex rings or point-vortices for the lake equation.

Existence and Uniqueness for the SQG Vortex-Wave System when the Vorticity is Constant near the Point-Vortex

This article studies the vortex-wave system for the Surface Quasi-Geostrophic equation with parameter 0 < s < 1. We obtained local existence of classical solutions in H^4 under the standard ''plateau hypothesis'', H^2-stability of the solutions, and a blow-up criterion. In the sub-critical case s > 1/2 we established global existence of weak solutions. For the critical case s = 1/2, we introduced a weaker notion of solution (V-weak solutions) to give a meaning to the equation and prove global existence.

Construction of unstable concentrated solutions of the Euler and gSQG equations

In this paper we construct solutions to the Euler and gSQG equations that are concentrated near unstable stationary configurations of point-vortices. Those solutions are themselves unstable, in the sense that their localization radius grows from order $\varepsilon$ to order $\varepsilon^\beta$ (with $\beta < 1$) in a time of order $|\ln\varepsilon|$. This proves in particular that the logarithmic lower-bound obtained in previous papers (in particular [P. Butt\`a and C. Marchioro, Long time evolution of concentrated Euler flows with planar symmetry, SIAM J. Math. Anal., 50(1):735-760, 2018]) about vorticity localization in Euler and gSQG equations is optimal. In addition we construct unstable solutions of the Euler equations in bounded domains concentrated around a single unstable stationary point. To achieve this we construct a domain whose Robin's function has a saddle point.

H\"older regularity for collapses of point vortices

The first part of this article studies the collapses of point-vortices for the Euler equation in the plane and for surface quasi-geostrophic equations in the general setting of $\alpha$ models. In these models the kernel of the Biot-Savart law is a power function of exponent $-\alpha$. It is proved that, under a standard non-degeneracy hypothesis, the trajectories of the point-vortices have a H\"older regularity up to, and including, the time of collapse. The H\"older exponent obtained is $1/(\alpha+1)$ and this exponent is proved to be optimal for all $\alpha$ by exhibiting an example of a $3$-vortex collapse. The same question is then addressed for the Euler point-vortex system in smooth bounded connected domains. It is proved that if a given point-vortex has an accumulation point in the interior of the domain as $t\to T$, then it converges towards this point and displays the same H\"older continuity property. A partial result for point-vortices that collapse with the boundary is also established : we prove that their distance to the boundary is H\"older regular.

2D point vortex dynamics in bounded domains: global existence for almost every initial data

In this paper, we prove that in bounded planar domains with $C^{2,\alpha}$ boundary, for almost every initial condition in the sense of the Lebesgue measure, the point vortex system has a global solution, meaning that there is no collision between two point-vortices or with the boundary. This extends the work previously done in [13] for the unit disk. The proof requires the construction of a regularized dynamics that approximates the real dynamics and some strong inequalities for the Green's function of the domain. In this paper, we make extensive use of the estimates given in [7]. We establish our relevant inequalities first in simply connected domains using conformal maps, then in multiply connected domains.

Long time confinement of vorticity around a stable stationary point vortex in a bounded planar domain

In this paper we consider the incompressible Euler equation in a simply-connected bounded planar domain. We study the confinement of the vorticity around a stationary point vortex. We show that the power law confinement around the center of the unit disk obtained in [2] remains true in the case of a stationary point vortex in a simply-connected bounded domain. The domain and the stationary point vortex must satisfy a condition expressed in terms of the conformal mapping from the domain to the unit disk. Explicit examples are discussed at the end.
