Navigating the Sea of LLM Evaluation: Investigating Bias in Toxicity Benchmarks

The rapid adoption of LLMs in both research and industry highlights the challenges of deploying them safely and reveals a gap in the systematic evaluation of toxicity benchmarks. As organizations increasingly rely on these benchmarks to certify models for customer-facing applications and automated moderation, unrecognized evaluation biases could lead to the deployment of vulnerable or unsafe systems. This work investigates the robustness of established benchmarking setups and examines how to measure currently neglected intrinsic biases, such as those related to model choice, metrics, and task types. Our experiments uncover significant discrepancies in benchmark behaviors when evaluation setups are altered. Specifically, shifting the task from text completion to summarization increases the tendency of benchmarks to flag content as harmful. Additionally, certain benchmarks fail to maintain consistent behavior when the input data domain is changed. Furthermore, we observe model-specific instabilities, demonstrating a clear need for more robust and comprehensive safety evaluation frameworks.

Linear-Time and Constant-Memory Text Embeddings Based on Recurrent Language Models

Transformer-based embedding models suffer from quadratic computational and linear memory complexity, limiting their utility for long sequences. We propose recurrent architectures as an efficient alternative, introducing a vertically chunked inference strategy that enables fast embedding generation with memory usage that becomes constant in the input length once it exceeds the vertical chunk size. By fine-tuning Mamba2 models, we demonstrate their viability as general-purpose text embedders, achieving competitive performance across a range of benchmarks while maintaining a substantially smaller memory footprint compared to transformer-based counterparts. We empirically validate the applicability of our inference strategy to Mamba2, RWKV, and xLSTM models, confirming consistent runtime-memory trade-offs across architectures and establishing recurrent models as a compelling alternative to transformers for efficient embedding generation.

End-to-end speech recognition modeling from de-identified data

De-identification of data used for automatic speech recognition modeling is a critical component in protecting privacy, especially in the medical domain. However, simply removing all personally identifiable information (PII) from end-to-end model training data leads to a significant performance degradation in particular for the recognition of names, dates, locations, and words from similar categories. We propose and evaluate a two-step method for partially recovering this loss. First, PII is identified, and each occurrence is replaced with a random word sequence of the same category. Then, corresponding audio is produced via text-to-speech or by splicing together matching audio fragments extracted from the corpus. These artificial audio/label pairs, together with speaker turns from the original data without PII, are used to train models. We evaluate the performance of this method on in-house data of medical conversations and observe a recovery of almost the entire performance degradation in the general word error rate while still maintaining a strong diarization performance. Our main focus is the improvement of recall and precision in the recognition of PII-related words. Depending on the PII category, between $50\% - 90\%$ of the performance degradation can be recovered using our proposed method.

CMS Higgs physics results

Recent results of searches for Higgs bosons by the CMS collaboration are presented. These consist of searches for rare Higgs boson decays, searches for additional neutral Higgs bosons, and searches for charged Higgs bosons.

Summary of recent progress in searches for additional Higgs bosons

There has been a tremendous increase of sensitivity in searches for charged Higgs bosons and additional neutral Higgs bosons since the last CHARGED workshop in 2016. We will review recent experimental and theory developments as presented at CHARGED2018, and conclude with future prospects for the field.

Identification and energy calibration of hadronic tau lepton decays at the LHC

The identification of hadronic tau lepton decays is an important requirement for the LHC physics program, both in terms of standard model measurements and the search for beyond-the-standard-model physics. The ATLAS and CMS algorithms for identification and energy calibration of hadronic tau lepton decays are conceptually different. They are described together with measurements of relevant performance figures.

Higgs boson discovery and recent results

After briefly discussing the discovery of a Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider, an overview of recent results in Higgs boson physics obtained with the CMS experiment is presented. The focus is on measurements of the properties of the recently discovered Higgs boson with a mass of about 125 GeV. A brief selection of results in searches for Higgs bosons beyond the standard model is given, and prospects of future Higgs boson measurements and searches are discussed.

Improved cross-section predictions for heavy charged Higgs boson production at the LHC

In most extensions of the Standard Model, heavy charged Higgs bosons at the LHC are dominantly produced in association with heavy quarks. An up-to-date determination of the next-to-leading order total cross section in a type-II two-Higgs-doublet model is presented, including a thorough estimate of the theoretical uncertainties due to missing higher-order corrections, parton distribution functions and physical input parameters. Predictions in the four- and five-flavour schemes are compared and reconciled through a recently proposed scale-setting prescription. A four- and five-flavour scheme matched prediction is provided for the interpretation of current and future experimental searches for heavy charged Higgs bosons at the LHC.

Higgs physics: Review of recent results and prospects from ATLAS and CMS

An overview of recent results in Higgs boson physics obtained with the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider located at CERN, Geneva, is presented. The focus is on measurements of the properties of the recently discovered Higgs boson with a mass of about 125 GeV. A brief selection of results in searches for Higgs bosons beyond the Standard Model is given, and prospects of future Higgs boson measurements and searches at the LHC are discussed.

BSM Higgs results from ATLAS and CMS

Searches for Higgs bosons in different extensions of the Standard Model (SM) are presented. These include the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the SM (MSSM), the next-to-MSSM (NMSSM), models with additional scalar singlets, doublets, or triplets, and generic searches for models with couplings modified with respect to the SM or for non-SM Higgs boson decay channels. Results are based on data collected by the ATLAS and CMS experiments in 2011 and 2012 at the LHC. No excess is found in any of the searches and thus the resulting exclusion limits are given.

Search for neutral and charged MSSM Higgs bosons in ATLAS

The results of Higgs boson searches in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) in proton-proton collisions with the ATLAS detector based on collected data corresponding to up to 36 pb-1 are presented. Searches in the channels H+->cs, H+->taunu, and H->tautau are discussed. All observations agree with the expectation of the Standard Model (SM)-only hypothesis and thus exclusion limits are derived.

Search for Charged Higgs Bosons at the LHC

The discovery potential for charged Higgs bosons at the ATLAS and CMS experiments is discussed with focus on the MSSM. Studies for several decay channels for the charged Higgs boson are presented both for production in top quark decays and gluon-gluon/gluon-bottom fusion.
