Proving the 6d Cardy Formula and Matching Global Gravitational Anomalies

A Cardy formula for 6d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) conjectured by Di Pietro and Komargodski in [1] governs the universal behavior of the supersymmetric partition function on $S^1_β\times S^5$ in the limit of small $β$ and fixed squashing of the $S^5$. For a general 6d SCFT, we study its 5d effective action, which is dominated by the supersymmetric completions of perturbatively gauge-invariant Chern-Simons terms in the small $β$ limit. Explicitly evaluating these supersymmetric completions gives the precise squashing dependence in the Cardy formula. For SCFTs with a pure Higgs branch (also known as very Higgsable SCFTs), we determine the Chern-Simons levels by explicitly going onto the Higgs branch and integrating out the Kaluza-Klein modes of the 6d fields on $S^1_β$. We then discuss tensor branch flows, where an apparent mismatch between the formula in [1] and the free field answer requires an additional contribution from BPS strings. This "missing contribution" is further sharpened by the relation between the fractional part of the Chern-Simons levels and the (mixed) global gravitational anomalies of the 6d SCFT. We also comment on the Cardy formula for 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs in relation to Higgs branch and Coulomb branch flows.

Evidence for a 5d F-theorem

Renormalization group flows are studied between 5d SCFTs engineered by $(p,q)$ 5-brane webs with large numbers of external 5-branes. A general expression for the free energy on $S^5$ in terms of single-valued trilogarithm functions is derived from their supergravity duals, which are characterized by the 5-brane charges and additional geometric parameters. The additional geometric parameters are fixed by regularity conditions, and we show that the solutions to the regularity conditions extremize a trial free energy. These results are used to survey a large sample of $\mathcal O(10^5)$ renormalization group flows between different 5d SCFTs, including Higgs branch flows and flows that preserve the $SU(2)$ $R$-symmetry. In all cases the free energy changes monotonically towards the infrared, in line with a 5d $F$-theorem.

4d $\mathcal{N} = 1$/2d Yang-Mills Duality in Holography

We study the supergravity dual of four-dimensional ${\mathcal{N}=1}$ superconformal field theories arising from wrapping M5-branes on a Kähler two-cycle inside a Calabi-Yau threefold. We derive an effective three-dimensional theory living on the cobordism between the infrared and ultraviolet Riemann surfaces, describing the renormalization group flows between AdS$_7$ and AdS$_{5}$ as well as between different AdS$_{5}$ fixed points. The realization of this system as an effective theory is convenient to make connections to known theories, and we show that upon imposing (physical) infrared boundary conditions, the effective three-dimensional theory further reduces to two-dimensional $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills theory on the Riemann surface, thus deriving a correspondence between the gravity duals of a class of $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theories arising from wrapping M5-branes on a Riemann surface and two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory on the same Riemann surface.

Kähler Uniformization from Holographic Renormalization Group Flows of M5-branes

In this paper, we initiate the study of holographic renormalization group flows acting on the metric of four-manifolds. In particular, we derive a set of equations which govern the evolution of a generic Kähler four-manifold along the renormalization group flow in seven-dimensional gauged supergravity. The physical eleven-dimensional M-theory setup is given by a stack of M5-branes wrapping a calibrated Kähler four-cycle inside a Calabi-Yau threefold. By topologically twisting the theory in the ultraviolet, we may choose an arbitrary Kähler metric on the four-cycle as an asymptotic boundary condition. Along the renormalization group flow, the metric moduli are largely washed out, and at the infrared fixed point we will reach a Kähler-Einstein metric, which is the expected uniformization behavior.

3d N=4 Bootstrap and Mirror Symmetry

We investigate the non-BPS realm of 3d ${\cal N} = 4$ superconformal field theory by uniting the non-perturbative methods of the conformal bootstrap and supersymmetric localization, and utilizing special features of 3d ${\cal N} = 4$ theories such as mirror symmetry and a protected sector described by topological quantum mechanics (TQM). Supersymmetric localization allows for the exact determination of the conformal and flavor central charges, and the latter can be fed into the mini-bootstrap of the TQM to solve for a subset of the OPE data. We examine the implications of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ mirror action for the SCFT single- and mixed-branch crossing equations for the moment map operators, and apply numerical bootstrap to obtain universal constraints on OPE data for given flavor symmetry groups. A key ingredient in applying the bootstrap analysis is the determination of the mixed-branch superconformal blocks. Among other results, we show that the simplest known self-mirror theory with $SU(2) \times SU(2)$ flavor symmetry saturates our bootstrap bounds, which allows us to extract the non-BPS data and examine the self-mirror $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry thereof.

An infrared bootstrap of the Schur index with surface defects

The infrared formula relates the Schur index of a 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory to its wall-crossing invariant, a.k.a. BPS monodromy. A further extension of this formula, proposed by Córdova, Gaiotto and Shao, includes contributions by various types of line and surface defects. We study BPS monodromies in the presence of vortex surface defects of arbitrary vorticity for general class $\mathcal{S}$ theories of type $A_1$ engineered by UV curves with at least one regular puncture. The trace of these defect BPS monodromies is shown to coincide with the action of certain $q$-difference operators acting on the trace of the (pure) 4d BPS monodromy. We use these operators to develop a "bootstrap" (of traces) of BPS monodromies, relying only on their infrared properties, thereby reproducing the very general ultraviolet characterization of the Schur index.

Black hole microstate counting in Type IIB from 5d SCFTs

We use recently established AdS$_6$/CFT$_5$ dualities to count the microstates of magnetically charged AdS$_6 \times S^2 \times Σ$ black holes in Type IIB. The near-horizon limit is described by solutions with AdS$_2 \times Σ_{\mathfrak{g}_1} \times Σ_{\mathfrak{g}_2} \times S^2 \times Σ$ geometry, where $Σ_{\mathfrak{g}_i}$ are Riemann surfaces of constant curvature and $Σ$ is a further Riemann surface over which the geometry is warped. Our results show that the topologically twisted indices of the proposed dual superconformal field theories precisely reproduce the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of this class of black holes. This provides further support for a prescription to compute five-dimensional topologically twisted indices put forth recently, and for the proposed dualities. We confirm the $N^4$ scaling found in the sphere partition functions and extend previous matches of sphere partition functions to AdS$_6$ solutions with monodromy.

Chiral Algebra, Localization, Modularity, Surface defects, And All That

We study the 2D vertex operator algebra (VOA) construction in 4D $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories (SCFT) on $S^3 \times S^1$, focusing both on old puzzles as well as new observations. The VOA lives on a two-torus $\mathbb{T}^2\subset S^3\times S^1$, it is $\frac12\mathbb{Z}$-graded, and this torus is equipped with the natural choice of spin structure (1,0) for the $\mathbb{Z} +\frac12$-graded operators, corresponding to the NS sector vacuum character. By analyzing the possible refinements of the Schur index that preserve the VOA, we find that it admits discrete deformations, which allow access to the remaining spin structures (1,1), (0,1) and (0,0), of which the latter two involve the inclusion of a particular surface defect. For Lagrangian theories, we perform the detailed analysis: we describe the natural supersymmetric background, perform localization, and derive the gauged symplectic boson action on a torus in any spin structure. In the absence of flavor fugacities, the 2D and 4D path integrals precisely match, including the Casimir factors. We further analyze the 2D theory: we identify its integration cycle, the two-point functions, and interpret flavor holonomies as screening charges in the VOA. Next, we make some observations about modularity; the $T$-transformation acts on our four partition functions and lifts to a large diffeomorphism on $S^3\times S^1$. More interestingly, we generalize the four partition functions on the torus to an infinite family labeled both by the spin structure and the integration cycle inside the complexified maximal torus of the gauge group. Members of this family transform into one another under the full modular group, and we confirm the recent observation that the $S$-transform of the Schur index in Lagrangian theories exhibits logarithmic behavior. Finally, we comment on how locally our background reproduces the $Ω$-background.

Four-dimensional Lens Space Index from Two-dimensional Chiral Algebra

We study the supersymmetric partition function on $S^1 \times L(r, 1)$, or the lens space index of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories and their connection to two-dimensional chiral algebras. We primarily focus on free theories as well as Argyres-Douglas theories of type $(A_1, A_k)$ and $(A_1, D_k)$. We observe that in specific limits, the lens space index is reproduced in terms of the (refined) character of an appropriately twisted module of the associated two-dimensional chiral algebra or a generalized vertex operator algebra. The particular twisted module is determined by the choice of discrete holonomies for the flavor symmetry in four-dimensions.

Precision test of AdS$_6$/CFT$_5$ in Type IIB

Large classes of warped AdS$_6$ solutions were constructed recently in Type IIB supergravity, and identified as holographic duals for five-dimensional superconformal field theories realized by $(p,q)$ five-brane webs. We confront holographic results for the five sphere partition functions obtained from these solutions with computations for the putative dual field theories. We obtain the sphere partition functions and conformal central charges in gauge theory deformations of the superconformal field theories numerically using supersymmetric localization, and extrapolate the results to the conformal fixed points. In the appropriate large $N$ limits, the results match precisely to the supergravity computations, providing strong support for the proposed dualities.

Spheres, Charges, Instantons, and Bootstrap: A Five-Dimensional Odyssey

We combine supersymmetric localization and the conformal bootstrap to study five-dimensional superconformal field theories. To begin, we classify the admissible counter-terms and derive a general relation between the five-sphere partition function and the conformal and flavor central charges. Along the way, we discover a new superconformal anomaly in five dimensions. We then propose a precise triple factorization formula for the five-sphere partition function, that incorporates instantons and is consistent with flavor symmetry enhancement. We numerically evaluate the central charges for the rank-one Seiberg and Morrison-Seiberg theories, and find strong evidence for their saturation of bootstrap bounds, thereby determining the spectra of long multiplets in these theories. Lastly, our results provide new evidence for the $F$-theorem and possibly a $C$-theorem in five-dimensional superconformal theories.

Romans Supergravity from Five-Dimensional Holograms

We study five-dimensional superconformal field theories and their holographic dual, matter-coupled Romans supergravity. On the one hand, some recently derived formulae allow us to extract the central charges from deformations of the supersymmetric five-sphere partition function, whose large N expansion can be computed using matrix model techniques. On the other hand, the conformal and flavor central charges can be extracted from the six-dimensional supergravity action, by carefully analyzing its embedding into type I' string theory. The results match on the two sides of the holographic duality. Our results also provide analytic evidence for the symmetry enhancement in five-dimensional superconformal field theories.

Supersymmetric solutions to Euclidean Romans supergravity

We study Euclidean Romans supergravity in six dimensions with a non-trivial Abelian R-symmetry gauge field. We show that supersymmetric solutions are in one-to-one correspondence with solutions to a set of differential constraints on an SU(2) structure. As an application of our results we (i) show that this structure reduces at a conformal boundary to the five-dimensional rigid supersymmetric geometry previously studied by the authors, (ii) find a general expression for the holographic dual of the VEV of a BPS Wilson loop, matching an exact field theory computation, (iii) construct holographic duals to squashed Sasaki-Einstein backgrounds, again matching to a field theory computation, and (iv) find new analytic solutions.

D2-brane Chern-Simons theories: F-maximization = a-maximization

We study a system of N D2-branes probing a generic Calabi-Yau three-fold singularity in the presence of a non-zero quantized Romans mass n. We argue that the low-energy effective N = 2 Chern-Simons quiver gauge theory flows to a superconformal fixed point in the IR, and construct the dual AdS_4 solution in massive IIA supergravity. We compute the free energy F of the gauge theory on S^3 using localization. In the large N limit we find F = c(nN)^{1/3}a^{2/3}, where c is a universal constant and a is the a-function of the "parent" four-dimensional N = 1 theory on N D3-branes probing the same Calabi-Yau singularity. It follows that maximizing F over the space of admissible R-symmetries is equivalent to maximizing a for this class of theories. Moreover, we show that the gauge theory result precisely matches the holographic free energy of the supergravity solution, and provide a similar matching of the VEV of a BPS Wilson loop operator.

Supersymmetric gauge theories on five-manifolds

We construct rigid supersymmetric gauge theories on Riemannian five-manifolds. We follow a holographic approach, realizing the manifold as the conformal boundary of a six-dimensional bulk supergravity solution. This leads to a systematic classification of five-dimensional supersymmetric backgrounds with gravity duals. We show that the background metric is furnished with a conformal Killing vector, which generates a transversely holomorphic foliation with a transverse Hermitian structure. Moreover, we prove that any such metric defines a supersymmetric background. Finally, we construct supersymmetric Lagrangians for gauge theories coupled to arbitrary matter on such backgrounds.

Supersymmetric gauge theories on squashed five-spheres and their gravity duals

We construct the gravity duals of large N supersymmetric gauge theories defined on squashed five-spheres with SU(3) x U(1) symmetry. These five-sphere backgrounds are continuously connected to the round sphere, and we find a one-parameter family of 3/4 BPS deformations and a two-parameter family of (generically) 1/4 BPS deformations. The gravity duals are constructed in Euclidean Romans F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions, and uplift to massive type IIA supergravity. We holographically renormalize the Romans theory, and use our general result to compute the renormalized on-shell actions for the solutions. The results agree perfectly with the large N limit of the dual gauge theory partition function, which we compute using large N matrix model techniques. In addition we compute BPS Wilson loops in these backgrounds, both in supergravity and in the large N matrix model, again finding precise agreement. Finally, we conjecture a general formula for the partition function on any five-sphere background, which for fixed gauge theory depends only on a certain supersymmetric Killing vector.

The superconformal index and an elliptic algebra of surface defects

In this paper we continue the study of the superconformal index of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ in the presence of surface defects. Our main result is the construction of an algebra of difference operators, whose elements are labeled by irreducible representations of $A_{N-1}$. For the fully antisymmetric tensor representations these difference operators are the Hamiltonians of the elliptic Ruijsenaars-Schneider system. The structure constants of the algebra are elliptic generalizations of the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. In the Macdonald limit, we identify the difference operators with local operators in the two-dimensional TQFT interpretation of the superconformal index. We also study the dimensional reduction to difference operators acting on the three-sphere partition function, where they characterize supersymmetric defects supported on a circle, and show that they are transformed to supersymmetric Wilson loops under mirror symmetry. Finally, we compare to the difference operators that create 't Hooft loops in the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ theory on a four-sphere by embedding the three-dimensional theory as an S-duality domain wall.

The gravity dual of supersymmetric gauge theories on a squashed five-sphere

We present the gravity dual of large N supersymmetric gauge theories on a squashed five-sphere. The one-parameter family of solutions is constructed in Euclidean Romans F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions, and uplifts to massive type IIA supergravity. By renormalizing the theory with appropriate counterterms we evaluate the renormalized on-shell action for the solutions. We also evaluate the large N limit of the gauge theory partition function, and find precise agreement.
