Weak wave turbulence as a precursor to universal coarsening in a homogeneous Bose gas

Relaxation and condensation of an isolated low-energy Bose gas provide an ideal setting for the study of the universal features of far-from-equilibrium many-body dynamics and the emergence of long-range order. Conceptually, the emergence of such order involves two steps: the formation of local coherence, on a system-specific microscopic lengthscale, and the spreading of coherence, over lengthscales much larger than any microscopic scale. The latter is understood in terms of universal phase-ordering kinetics, or coarsening, characterized by an algebraic growth of the coherence length. Here, for a homogeneous Bose gas with tunable interactions, we show that the former also has a universal description, within the framework of weak wave turbulence (WWT). Specifically, the initial transport of particles to low momenta corresponds to an inverse turbulent cascade that is, in agreement with the WWT theory, characterized by a power-law momentum distribution, with exponent $\gamma = 2.4(1)$, and transport times ${\propto} (na)^{-2}$, where $n$ is the gas density and $a$ the $s$-wave scattering length.

Observation of Vinen turbulence during far-from-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation

Relaxation of far-from-equilibrium quantum fluids, intimately related to the emergence of long-range order, is theoretically associated with the decay of a turbulent isotropic tangle of vortex lines. We observe and study such decaying quantum turbulence in a homogeneous 3D atomic Bose gas. Using matter-wave techniques to magnify the gas density distribution, and then imaging a thin slice of the magnified cloud, we observe imprints of randomly oriented vortex lines and measure the vortex line-length density $\mathcal{L}$. The observed decay of $\mathcal{L}$ agrees with the prediction for Vinen `ultraquantum' turbulence. Although our weakly interacting gases are highly compressible, their large-scale dynamics are consistent with the behavior of an incompressible hydrodynamic fluid, with the decay of $\mathcal{L}$ not depending on the strength of the interatomic interactions and being similar to that in the strongly interacting superfluid helium.

A Nonequilibrium Equation of State for a Turbulent 2D Bose Gas

Nonequilibrium equations of state can provide an effective thermodynamic-like description of far-from-equilibrium systems. We experimentally construct such an equation for a direct energy cascade in a turbulent two-dimensional Bose gas. Our homogeneous gas is continuously driven on a large length scale and, with matching dissipation on a small length scale, exhibits a nonthermal but stationary power-law momentum distribution. Our equation of state links the cascade amplitude with the underlying scale-invariant energy flux, and can, for different drive strengths, gas densities, and interaction strengths, be recast into a universal power-law form using scalings consistent with the Gross-Pitaevskii model.

A universal speed limit for spreading of coherence

Discoveries of fundamental limits for the rates of physical processes, from the speed of light to the Lieb-Robinson bound for information propagation, often lead to breakthroughs in the our understanding of the underlying physics. Here we observe such a limit for a paradigmatic many-body phenomenon, the spreading of coherence during formation of a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate. We study condensate formation in an isolated homogeneous atomic gas that is initially far from equilibrium, in an incoherent low-energy state, and condenses as it relaxes towards equilibrium. Tuning the inter-atomic interactions that drive condensation, we show that the spreading of coherence through the system is initially slower for weaker interactions, and faster for stronger ones, but always eventually reaches the same limit, where the square of the coherence length grows at a universal rate given by the ratio of Planck's constant and the particle mass, or equivalently by the quantum of velocity circulation associated with a quantum vortex. These observations are robust to changes in the initial state, the gas density, and the system size. Our results provide benchmarks for theories of universality far from equilibrium, are relevant for quantum technologies that rely on large-scale coherence, and invite similar measurements in other systems.

Observation of an Inverse Turbulent-Wave Cascade in a Driven Quantum Gas

We observe an inverse turbulent-wave cascade, from small to large lengthscales, in a driven homogeneous 2D Bose gas. Starting with an equilibrium condensate, we drive the gas isotropically on a lengthscale much smaller than its size, and observe a nonthermal population of modes with wavelengths larger than the drive one. At long drive times, the gas exhibits a steady nonthermal momentum distribution. At lengthscales increasing from the drive one to the system size, this distribution features in turn: (i) a power-law spectrum with an exponent close to the analytical result for a particle cascade in weak-wave turbulence, and (ii) a spectrum reminiscent of a nonthermal fixed point associated with universal coarsening in an isolated 2D gas. In further experiments, based on anisotropic driving, we reveal the complete qualitative picture of how the steady-state cascade forms.

Universal Coarsening in a Homogeneous Two-Dimensional Bose Gas

Coarsening of an isolated far-from-equilibrium quantum system is a paradigmatic many-body phenomenon, relevant from subnuclear to cosmological lengthscales, and predicted to feature universal dynamic scaling. Here, we observe universal scaling in the coarsening of a homogeneous two-dimensional Bose gas, with exponents that match analytical predictions. For different initial states, we reveal universal scaling in the experimentally accessible finite-time dynamics by elucidating and accounting for the initial-state-dependent prescaling effects. The methods we introduce establish direct comparison between cold-atom experiments and non-equilibrium field theory, and are applicable to any study of universality far from equilibrium.

Emergence of isotropy and dynamic scaling in 2D wave turbulence in a homogeneous Bose gas

We realise a turbulent cascade of wave excitations in a homogeneous 2D Bose gas, and probe on all relevant time and length scales how it builds up from small to large momenta, until the system reaches a steady state with matching energy injection and dissipation. This all-scales view directly reveals the two theoretically expected cornerstones of turbulence formation -- the emergence of statistical momentum-space isotropy under anisotropic forcing, and the spatiotemporal scaling of the momentum distribution at times before any energy is dissipated.
