Ideal clones: Solution to a problem of Czedli and Heindorf

Given an infinite set X and an ideal I of subsets of X, the set of all finitary operations on X which map all (powers of) I-small sets to I-small sets is a clone. In a 2001 article, G. Czedli and L. Heindorf asked whether or not for two particular ideals I and J on a countably infinite set X, the corresponding ideal clones were a covering in the lattice of clones. We give an affirmative answer to this question.

A survey of clones on infinite sets

A clone on a set X is a set of finitary operations on X which contains all projections and which is moreover closed under functional composition. Ordering all clones on X by inclusion, one obtains a complete algebraic lattice, called the clone lattice. We summarize what we know about the clone lattice on an infinite base set X and formulate what we consider the most important open problems.

The typical countable algebra

We argue that it makes sense to talk about ``typical'' properties of lattices, and then show that there is, up to isomorphism, a unique countable lattice L* (the Fraisse limit of the class of finite lattices) that has all ``typical'' properties. Among these properties are: L* is simple and locally finite, every order preserving function can be interpolated by a lattice polynomial, and every finite lattice or countable locally finite lattice embeds into L*. The same arguments apply to other classes of algebras assuming they have a Fraisse limit and satisfy the finite embeddability property.

Further Baire results on the distribution of subsequences

This paper presents results about the distribution of subsequences which are typical in the sense of Baire. The first part is concerned with sequences of the type x_k = n_k*alpha, n_1 < n_2 < n_3 < ..., mod 1. Improving a result of Salat we show that, if the quotients q_k = n_{k+1}/n_k satisfy q_k > 1+ epsilon, then the set of alpha such that (x_k) is uniformly distributed is of first Baire category, i.e. for generic alpha we do not have uniform distribution. Under the stronger assumption lim q_k = infinity one even has maldistribution for generic alpha, the strongest possible contrast to uniform distribution. The second part reverses the point of view by considering appropriately defined Baire spaces S of subsequences. For a fixed well distributed sequence (x_n) we show that there is a set M of measures such that for generic (n_k) in S the set of limit measures of the subsequence (x_{n_k}) is exactly M.

All creatures great and small

Let kappa be an uncountable regular cardinal. Assuming 2^kappa=kappa^+, we show that the clone lattice on a set of size kappa is not dually atomic.

Continuous Fraisse Conjecture

We investigate the relation of countable closed subsets of the reals with respect to continuous monotone embeddability; we show that there are exactly aleph_1 many equivalence classes with respect to this embeddability relation. This is an extension of Laver's 1971 result, who considered (plain) embeddability, which yields coarser equivalence classes. Using this result we show that there are only countably many different Godel logics.

Large intervals in the clone lattice

We give three examples of large intervals in the lattice of (local) clones on an infinite set X, by exhibiting clones C_1, C_2, C_3 such that: (1) the interval [C_1, O] in the lattice of local clones is (as a lattice) isomorphic to {0,1,2, ...} under the divisibility relation, (2) the interval [C_2, O] in the lattice of local clones is isomorphic to the congruence lattice of an arbitrary semilattice, (3) the interval [C_3, O] in the lattice of all clones is isomorphic to the lattice of all filters on X. These examples explain the difficulty of obtaining a satisfactory analysis of the clone lattice on infinite sets. In particular, (1) shows that the lattice of local clones is not dually atomic.

Analytic clones

We use a method from descriptive set theory to investigate the two precomplete clones above the unary clone on a countable set.

Automorphisms and strongly invariant relations

We investigate characterizations of the Galois connection sInv-Aut between sets of finitary relations on a base set A and their automorphisms. In particular, for A=omega_1, we construct a countable set R of relations that is closed under all invariant operations on relations and under arbitray intersections, but is not closed under sInv(Aut(-)). Our structure (A,R) has an omega-categorical first order theory. A higher order definable well-order makes it rigid, but any reduct to a finite language is homogeneous.

Clones from Creatures

A clone on a set X is a set of finitary operations on X which contains all the projections and is closed under composition. The set of all clones forms a complete lattice Cl(X) with greatest element O, the set of all finitary operations. For finite sets X the lattice is "dually atomic": every clone other than O is below a coatom of Cl(X). It was open whether Cl(X) is also dually atomic for infinite X. Assuming the continuum hypothesis, we show that there is a clone C on a countable set such that the interval of clones above C is linearly ordered, uncountable, and has no coatoms.

Completion of Semirings

A semiring can be ``completed'' (i.e., embedded into a semiring in which all infinite sums are defined and satisfy some reasonable properties) iff this semiring can be naturally partially ordered. This construction is ``natural'' (a left adjoint to the forgetful functor), and quite straightforward.

Continuous Ramsey theory on Polish spaces and covering the plane by functions

We investigate the Ramsey theory of continuous pair-colorings on complete, separable metric spaces, and apply the results to the problem of covering a plane by functions. The homogeneity number hm(c) of a pair-coloring c:[X]^2 -> 2 is the number of c-homogeneous subsets of X needed to cover X. We isolate two continuous pair-colorings on the Cantor space 2^omega, c_min and c_max, which satisfy hm(c_min)\le hm(c_max) and prove: 1. For every Polish space X and every continuous pair-coloring c:[X]^2 -> 2 with hm(c) uncountable: hm(c)= hm(c_min) or hm(c)=hm(c_max) 2. There is a model of set theory in which hm(c_min)=aleph_1 and hm(c_max)=aleph_2 (The consistency of hm(c_min) = 2^aleph0 and of hm(c_max) < 2^aleph0 is known) We prove that hm(c_min) is equal to the covering number of (2^omega)^2 by graphs of Lipschitz functions and their reflections on the diagonal. An iteration of an optimal forcing notion associated to c_min gives: There is a model of set theory in which 1. R^2 is coverable by aleph1 graphs and reflections of graphs of continuous real functions; 2. R^2 is not coverable by aleph1 graphs and reflections of graphs of Lipschitz real functions.

Balanced d-lattices are complemented

We show that all balanced d-lattices must be complemented, answering a question of Chajda and Eigenthaler. (A bounded lattice is balanced if any two congruences agree on their 1-classes iff they agree on their 0-classes.) Our main tool is the characterization of d-lattices (a class of bounded lattices including the bounded distributive lattices, originally defined by a property of their compact congruences) as exactly those lattices in which all maximal filters/ideals are prime.

Clones on regular cardinals

We investigate the structure of the lattice of clones on an infinite set X. We first observe that ultrafilters naturally induce clones; this yields a simple proof of Rosenberg's theorem: "there are 2^2^kappa many maximal (=precomplete) clones on a set of size kappa." The clones we construct here do not contain all unary functions. We then investigate clones that do contain all unary functions. Using a strong negative partition theorem we show that for many cardinals kappa there are 2^2^kappa many such clones on a set of size kappa. Finally, we show that on a weakly compact cardinal there are exactly 2 maximal clones which contain all unary functions.

Lattices, interpolation, and set theory

We review a few results concerning interpolation of monotone functions on infinite lattices, emphasizing the role of set-theoretic considerations. We also discuss a few open problems.

Interpolation in ortholattices

If L is a complete ortholattice, f any partial function from L^n to L, then there is a complete ortholattice L* containing L as a subortholattice, and an ortholattice polynomial with coefficients in L* which represents f on L^n. Iterating this construction long enough yields a complete ortholattice in which every function can be interpolated by a polynomial on any set of small enough cardinality.

Antichains in products of linear orders

1. For many regular cardinals lambda (in particular, for all successors of singular strong limit cardinals, and for all successors of singular omega-limits), for all n in {2,3,4, ...} : There is a linear order L such that L^n has no (incomparability-)antichain of cardinality lambda, while L^{n+1} has an antichain of cardinality lambda . 2. For any nondecreasing sequence (lambda2,lambda3, ...) of infinite cardinals it is consistent that there is a linear order L such that L^n has an antichain of cardinality lambda_n, but not one of cardinality lambda_n^+ .
