Efficient Light Funneling based on the non-Hermitian Skin Effect

In the last two decades, the ubiquitous effect of dissipation has proven to entail astonishing non-Hermitian features, rather than just being an inescapable nuisance. As an alternative route to non-Hermiticity, we tailor the anisotropy of a lattice, which constitutes an, up to now, barely exploited degree of freedom. In this case, the appearance of an interface dramatically alters the entire eigenmode spectrum, leading to the exponential localization of all modes at the interface, which goes beyond the expectations for Hermitian systems. This effect is dubbed "non-Hermitian skin effect". We experimentally demonstrate it by studying the propagation of light in a large scale photonic mesh lattice. For arbitrary excitations, we find that light is always transported to the interface, realizing a highly efficient funnel for light.

Turbulent hydrodynamics in strongly correlated Kagome metals

A current challenge in condensed matter physics is the realization of strongly correlated, viscous electron fluids. These fluids are not amenable to the perturbative methods of Fermi liquid theory, but can be described by holography, that is, by mapping them onto a weakly curved gravitational theory via gauge/gravity duality. The canonical system considered for realizations has been graphene, which possesses Dirac dispersions at low energies as well as significant Coulomb interactions between the electrons. In this work, we show that Kagome systems with electron fillings adjusted to the Dirac nodes of their band structure provide a much more compelling platform for realizations of viscous electron fluids, including non-linear effects such as turbulence. In particular, we find that in stoichiometric Scandium (Sc) Herbertsmithite, the fine-structure constant, which measures the effective Coulomb interaction and hence reflects the strength of the correlations, is enhanced by a factor of about 3.2 as compared to graphene, due to orbital hybridization. We employ holography to estimate the ratio of the shear viscosity over the entropy density in Sc-Herbertsmithite, and find it about three times smaller than in graphene. These findings put, for the first time, the turbulent flow regime described by holography within the reach of experiments.

Observation of bulk boundary correspondence breakdown in topolectrical circuits

The study of the laws of nature has traditionally been pursued in the limit of isolated systems, where energy is conserved. This is not always a valid approximation, however, as the inclusion of features like gain and loss, or periodic driving, qualitatively amends these laws. A contemporary frontier of meta-material research is the challenge open systems pose to the established characterization of topological matter. There, one of the most relied upon principles is the bulk-boundary correspondence (BBC), which intimately relates the properties of the surface states to the topological classification of the bulk. The presence of gain and loss, in combination with the violation of reciprocity, has recently been predicted to affect this principle dramatically. Here, we report the experimental observation of BBC violation in a non-reciprocal topolectric circuit. The circuit admittance spectrum exhibits an unprecedented sensitivity to the presence of a boundary, displaying an extensive admittance mode localization despite a translationally invariant bulk. Intriguingly, we measure a non-local voltage response due to broken BBC. Depending on the AC current feed frequency, the voltage signal accumulates at the left or right boundary, and increases as a function of nodal distance to the current feed.

Topolectrical circuit realization of topological corner modes

Quantized electric quadrupole insulators have recently been proposed as novel quantum states of matter in two spatial dimensions. Gapped otherwise, they can feature zero-dimensional topological corner mid-gap states protected by the bulk spectral gap, reflection symmetries and a spectral symmetry. Here we introduce a topolectrical circuit design for realizing such corner modes experimentally and report measurements in which the modes appear as topological boundary resonances in the corner impedance profile of the circuit. Whereas the quantized bulk quadrupole moment of an electronic crystal does not have a direct analogue in the classical topolectrical-circuit framework, the corner modes inherit the identical form from the quantum case. Due to the flexibility and tunability of electrical circuits, they are an ideal platform for studying the reflection symmetry-protected character of corner modes in detail. Our work therefore establishes an instance where topolectrical circuitry is employed to bridge the gap between quantum theoretical modelling and the experimental realization of topological band structures.

Non-Abelian Statistics in one dimension: topological momentum spacings and SU(2) level $k$ fusion rules

We use a family of critical spin chain models discovered recently by one of us [M. Greiter, Mapping of Parent Hamiltonians, Springer, Berlin/Heidelberg 2011] to propose and elaborate that non-Abelian, SU(2) level $k=2S$ anyon statistics manifests itself in one dimension through topological selection rules for fractional shifts in the spacings of linear momenta, which yield an internal Hilbert space of, in the thermodynamic limit degenerate states. These shifts constitute the equivalent to the fractional shifts in the relative angular momenta of anyons in two dimensions. We derive the rules first for Ising anyons, and then generalize them to SU(2) level $k$ anyons. We establish a one-to-one correspondence between the topological choices for the momentum spacings and the fusion rules of spin \half spinons in the SU(2) level $k$ Wess--Zumino--Witten model, where the internal Hilbert space is spanned by the manifold of allowed fusion trees in the Bratelli diagrams. Finally, we show that the choices in the fusion trees may be interpreted as the choices between different domain walls between the $2S+1$ possible, degenerate dimer configurations of the spin $S$ chains at the multicritical point.

Chiral voltage propagation in a self-calibrated topolectrical Chern circuit

We propose an electric circuit array with topologically protected uni-directional voltage modes at its boundary. Instead of external bias fields or floquet engineering, we employ negative impedance converters with current inversion (INICs) to accomplish a non-reciprocal, time-reversal symmetry broken electronic network we call topolectrical Chern circuit (TCC). The TCC features an admittance bulk gap fully tunable via the resistors used in the INICs, along with a chiral voltage boundary mode reminiscent of the Berry flux monopole present in the admittance band structure. The active circuit elements in the TCC can be calibrated to compensate for dissipative loss.

Landau level quantization of Dirac electrons on the sphere

Interactions in Landau levels can stabilize new phases of matter, such as fractionally quantized Hall states. Numerical studies of these systems mostly require compact manifolds like the sphere or a torus. For massive dispersions, a formalism for the lowest Landau level on the sphere was introduced by Haldane [F.D.M. Haldane, PRL 51, 605 (1983)]. Graphene and surfaces of 3D topological insulators, however, display massless (Dirac) dispersions, and hence require a different description. We generalize a formalism previously developed for Dirac electrons on the sphere in zero field to include the effect of an external, uniform magnetic field.

Method to identify parent Hamiltonians for trial states

We describe a general method to identify exact, local parent Hamiltonians for trial states like quantum Hall or spin liquid states, which we have used extensively during the past decade. It can be used to identify exact parent Hamiltonians, either directly or via the construction of simpler annihilation operators from which a parent Hamiltonian respecting all the required symmetries can be constructed. Most remarkably, however, the method provides approximate parent Hamiltonians whenever an exact solution is not available within the space of presumed interaction terms.

Braiding errors in interacting Majorana quantum wires

Avenues of Majorana bound states (MBSs) have become one of the primary directions towards a possible realization of topological quantum computation. For a Y-junction of Kitaev quantum wires, we numerically investigate the braiding of MBSs while considering the full quasi-particle background. The two central sources of braiding errors are found to be the fidelity loss due to the incomplete adiabaticity of the braiding operation as well as the hybridization of the MBS. The explicit extraction of the braiding phase in the low-energy Majorana sector from the full many-particle Hilbert space allows us to analyze the breakdown of the independent-particle picture of Majorana braiding. Furthermore, we find nearest-neighbor interactions to significantly affect the braiding performance to the better or worse, depending on the sign and magnitude of the coupling.

Robust spin-polarized midgap states at step edges of topological crystalline insulators

Topological crystalline insulators are materials in which the crystalline symmetry leads to topologically protected surface states with a chiral spin texture, rendering them potential candidates for spintronics applications. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we uncover the existence of one-dimensional (1D) midgap states at odd-atomic surface step edges of the three- dimensional topological crystalline insulator (Pb,Sn)Se. A minimal toy model and realistic tight- binding calculations identify them as spin-polarized flat bands connecting two Dirac points. This non-trivial origin provides the 1D midgap states with inherent stability and protects them from backscattering. We experimentally show that this stability results in a striking robustness to defects, strong magnetic fields, and elevated temperature.

Laughlin states and their quasi-particle excitations on the torus

We provide a full derivation of Laughlin's Jastrow-type wave functions for quantized Hall states subject to periodic boundary conditions using an operator formalism. The construction includes the quasi-hole and the technically more challenging quasi-electron excitation, which was left as an open problem in the classic paper by Haldane and Rezayi [Phys. Rev. B 31, 2529 (1985)].

Universal entanglement spectra in critical spin chains

We advocate that in critical spin chains, and possibly in a larger class of 1D critical models, a gap in the momentum-space entanglement spectrum separates the universal part of the spectrum, which is determined by the associated conformal field theory, from the non-universal part, which is specific to the model. To this end, we provide affirmative evidence from multicritical spin chains with low energy sectors described by the SU(2)$_2$ or the SU(3)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model.

Paramagnetism in the kagome compounds (Zn,Mg,Cd)Cu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$

Frustrated magnetism on the kagome lattice has been a fertile ground for rich and fascinating physics, ranging from experimental evidence of a spin liquid to theoretical predictions of exotic superconductivity. Among experimentally realized spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ kagome magnets, herbertsmithite, kapellasite, and haydeeite [(Zn,Mg)Cu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$] are all well described by a three-parameter Heisenberg model, but they exhibit distinctly different physics. We address the problem using a pseudofermion functional renormalization-group approach and analyze the low-energy physics in the experimentally accessible parameter range. Our analysis places kapellasite and haydeeite near the boundaries between magnetically ordered and disordered phases, implying that slight modifications could dramatically affect their magnetic properties. Inspired by this, we perform \textit{ab initio} density functional theory calculations of (Zn,Mg,Cd)Cu$_{3}$ (OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ at various pressures. Our results suggest that by varying pressure and composition one can traverse a paramagnetic regime between different magnetically ordered phases.

Coupled wire construction of chiral spin liquids

We develop a coupled wire construction of chiral spin liquids. The starting point are individual wires of electrons in the Mott regime that are subject to a Zeeman field and Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Suitable spin-flip couplings between the wires yield an Abelian chiral spin liquid state which supports spinon excitations above a bulk gap, and chiral edge states. The approach generalizes to non-Abelian chiral spin liquids at level k with parafermionic edge states.

Momentum-Space Entanglement Spectrum of Bosons and Fermions with Interactions

We study the momentum space entanglement spectra of bosonic and fermionic formulations of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain with analytical methods and exact diagonalization. We investigate the behavior of the entanglement gaps, present in both partitions, across quantum phase transitions in the XXZ chain. In both cases, finite size scaling reveals that the entanglement gap closure does not occur at the physical transition points. For bosons, we find that the entanglement gap observed in [Thomale et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 116805 (2010)] depends on the scaling dimension of the conformal field theory as varied by the XXZ anisotropy. For fermions, the infinite entanglement gap present at the XX point persists well past the phase transition at the Heisenberg point. We elaborate on how these shifted transition points in the entanglement spectra may in fact support the numerical study of physical transitions in the momentum space density matrix renormalization group.

The 1D Ising model and topological order in the Kitaev chain

We elaborate on the topological order in the Kitaev chain, a p-wave superconductor with nearest-neighbor pairing amplitude equal to the hopping term Delta=t, and chemical potential mu=0. In particular, we write out the explicit eigenstates of the open chain in terms of fermion operators, and show that the states as well as their energy eigenvalues are formally equivalent to those of an Ising chain. The models are physically different, as the topological order in the Kitaev chain corresponds to conventional order in the Ising model.

Momentum classification of SU($n$) spin chains using extended Young Tableaux

Obtaining eigenvalues of permutations acting on the product space of $N$ representations of SU($n$) usually involves either diagonalising their representation matrices on total-weight subspaces or decomposing their characters, which can be obtained from Frobenius' formula or via graphical methods using Young tableaux. For products of fundamental representations of SU($n$), Schuricht and one of us proposed the method of extended Young Tableaux, which allows reading the eigenvalues of the cyclic permutation $C_N$ directly off the, slightly modified, standard Young tableaux labelling an irreducible SU($n$) representation. Here we generalise the method to all symmetric representations of SU($n$), and show that $C_N$ eigenvalue computation based on extended Young tableaux is at least linearly faster than the standard methods mentioned.

Generalizations of Perelomov's identity on the completeness of coherent states

We proof the Perelomov identity for arbitrary 2D lattices using Fourier transformation. We further generalize it to situations where the origin does not coincide with a lattice site, and where the form of the exponential factor is reminiscent of magnetic wave functions in uniaxial rather than symmetric gauge.
