Solving the KPZ equation

We introduce a new concept of solution to the KPZ equation which is shown to extend the classical Cole-Hopf solution. This notion provides a factorisation of the Cole-Hopf solution map into a "universal" measurable map from the probability space into an explicitly described auxiliary metric space, composed with a new solution map that has very good continuity properties. The advantage of such a formulation is that it essentially provides a pathwise notion of a solution, together with a very detailed approximation theory. In particular, our construction completely bypasses the Cole-Hopf transform, thus laying the groundwork for proving that the KPZ equation describes the fluctuations of systems in the KPZ universality class. As a corollary of our construction, we obtain very detailed new regularity results about the solution, as well as its derivative with respect to the initial condition. Other byproducts of the proof include an explicit approximation to the stationary solution of the KPZ equation, a well-posedness result for the Fokker-Planck equation associated to a particle diffusing in a rough space-time dependent potential, and a new periodic homogenisation result for the heat equation with a space-time periodic potential. One ingredient in our construction is an example of a non-Gaussian rough path such that the area process of its natural approximations needs to be renormalised by a diverging term for the approximations to converge.

Stochastic PDEs with multiscale structure

We study the spatial homogenisation of parabolic linear stochastic PDEs exhibiting a two-scale structure both at the level of the linear operator and at the level of the Gaussian driving noise. We show that in some cases, in particular when the forcing is given by space-time white noise, it may happen that the homogenised SPDE is not what one would expect from existing results for PDEs with more regular forcing terms.

Triviality of the 2D stochastic Allen-Cahn equation

We consider the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation driven by mollified space-time white noise. We show that, as the mollifier is removed, the solutions converge weakly to 0, independently of the initial condition. If the intensity of the noise simultaneously converges to 0 at a sufficiently fast rate, then the solutions converge to those of the deterministic equation. At the critical rate, the limiting solution is still deterministic, but it exhibits an additional damping term.

Periodic homogenization with an interface: The multi-dimensional case

We consider a diffusion process with coefficients that are periodic outside of an "interface region" of finite thickness. The question investigated in this article is the limiting long time/large scale behavior of such a process under diffusive rescaling. It is clear that outside of the interface, the limiting process must behave like Brownian motion, with diffusion matrices given by the standard theory of homogenization. The interesting behavior therefore occurs on the interface. Our main result is that the limiting process is a semimartingale whose bounded variation part is proportional to the local time spent on the interface. The proportionality vector can have nonzero components parallel to the interface, so that the limiting diffusion is not necessarily reversible. We also exhibit an explicit way of identifying its parameters in terms of the coefficients of the original diffusion. Similarly to the one-dimensional case, our method of proof relies on the framework provided by Freidlin and Wentzell [Ann. Probab. 21 (1993) 2215--2245] for diffusion processes on a graph in order to identify the generator of the limiting process.

Sampling conditioned hypoelliptic diffusions

A series of recent articles introduced a method to construct stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) which are invariant with respect to the distribution of a given conditioned diffusion. These works are restricted to the case of elliptic diffusions where the drift has a gradient structure and the resulting SPDE is of second-order parabolic type. The present article extends this methodology to allow the construction of SPDEs which are invariant with respect to the distribution of a class of hypoelliptic diffusion processes, subject to a bridge conditioning, leading to SPDEs which are of fourth-order parabolic type. This allows the treatment of more realistic physical models, for example, one can use the resulting SPDE to study transitions between meta-stable states in mechanical systems with friction and noise. In this situation the restriction of the drift being a gradient can also be lifted.

On Malliavin's proof of Hörmander's theorem

The aim of this note is to provide a short and self-contained proof of Hörmander's theorem about the smoothness of transition probabilities for a diffusion under Hörmander's "brackets condition". While both the result and the technique of proof are well-known, the exposition given here is novel in two aspects. First, we introduce Malliavin calculus in an "intuitive" way, without using Wiener's chaos decomposition. While this may make it difficult to prove some of the standard results in Malliavin calculus (boundedness of the derivative operator in $L^p$ spaces for example), we are able to bypass these and to replace them by weaker results that are still sufficient for our purpose. Second, we introduce a notion of "almost implication" and "almost truth" (somewhat similar to what is done in fuzzy logic) which allows, once the foundations of Malliavin calculus are laid out, to give a very short and streamlined proof of Hörmader's theorem that focuses on the main ideas without clouding it by technical details.

A Theory of Hypoellipticity and Unique Ergodicity for Semilinear Stochastic PDEs

We present a theory of hypoellipticity and unique ergodicity for semilinear parabolic stochastic PDEs with "polynomial" nonlinearities and additive noise, considered as abstract evolution equations in some Hilbert space. It is shown that if Hormander's bracket condition holds at every point of this Hilbert space, then a lower bound on the Malliavin covariance operator $M_t$ can be obtained. Informally, this bound can be read as "Fix any finite-dimensional projection $Π$ on a subspace of sufficiently regular functions. Then the eigenfunctions of $M_t$ with small eigenvalues have only a very small component in the image of $Π$". We also show how to use a priori bounds on the solutions to the equation to obtain good control on the dependency of the bounds on the Malliavin matrix on the initial condition. These bounds are sufficient in many cases to obtain the asymptotic strong Feller property introduced in [HairerMattingly06]. One of the main novel technical tools is an almost sure bound from below on the size of "Wiener polynomials", where the coefficients are possibly non-adapted stochastic processes satisfying a Lipschitz condition. By exploiting the polynomial structure of the equations, this result can be used to replace Norris' lemma, which is unavailable in the present context. We conclude by showing that the two-dimensional stochastic Navier-Stokes equations and a large class of reaction-diffusion equations fit the framework of our theory.

Singular perturbations to semilinear stochastic heat equations

We consider a class of singular perturbations to the stochastic heat equation or semilinear variations thereof. The interesting feature of these perturbations is that, as the small parameter epsilon tends to zero, their solutions converge to the 'wrong' limit, i.e. they do not converge to the solution obtained by simply setting epsilon = 0. A similar effect is also observed for some (formally) small stochastic perturbations of a deterministic semilinear parabolic PDE. Our proofs are based on a detailed analysis of the spatially rough component of the equations, combined with a judicious use of Gaussian concentration inequalities.

Non-asymptotic mixing of the MALA algorithm

The Metropolis-Adjusted Langevin Algorithm (MALA), originally introduced to sample exactly the invariant measure of certain stochastic differential equations (SDE) on infinitely long time intervals, can also be used to approximate pathwise the solution of these SDEs on finite time intervals. However, when applied to an SDE with a nonglobally Lipschitz drift coefficient, the algorithm may not have a spectral gap even when the SDE does. This paper reconciles MALA's lack of a spectral gap with its ergodicity to the invariant measure of the SDE and finite time accuracy. In particular, the paper shows that its convergence to equilibrium happens at exponential rate up to terms exponentially small in time-stepsize. This quantification relies on MALA's ability to exactly preserve the SDE's invariant measure and accurately represent the SDE's transition probability on finite time intervals.

Rough Stochastic PDEs

In this article, we show how the theory of rough paths can be used to provide a notion of solution to a class of nonlinear stochastic PDEs of Burgers type that exhibit too high spatial roughness for classical analytical methods to apply. In fact, the class of SPDEs that we consider is genuinely ill-posed in the sense that different approximations to the nonlinearity may converge to different limits. Using rough paths theory, a pathwise notion of solution to these SPDEs is formulated, and we show that this yields a well-posed problem, which is stable under a large class of perturbations, including the approximation of the rough driving noise by a mollified version and the addition of hyperviscosity. We also show that under certain structural assumptions on the coefficients, the SPDEs under consideration generate a reversible Markov semigroup with respect to a diffusion measure that can be given explicitly.

A chain of interacting particles under strain

We investigate the behaviour of a chain of interacting Brownian particles with one end fixed and the other moving away at slow speed, in the limit of small noise. The interaction between particles is through a pairwise potential with finite range. We consider both overdamped and underdamped dynamics.

Approximations to the Stochastic Burgers Equation

This article is devoted to the numerical study of various finite difference approximations to the stochastic Burgers equation. Of particular interest in the one-dimensional case is the situation where the driving noise is white both in space and in time. We demonstrate that in this case, different finite difference schemes converge to different limiting processes as the mesh size tends to zero. A theoretical explanation of this phenomenon is given and we formulate a number of conjectures for more general classes of equations, supported by numerical evidence.

Periodic homogenization with an interface: the one-dimensional case

We consider a one-dimensional diffusion process with coefficients that are periodic outside of a finite 'interface region'. The question investigated in this article is the limiting long time / large scale behaviour of such a process under diffusive rescaling. Our main result is that it converges weakly to a rescaled version of skew Brownian motion, with parameters that can be given explicitly in terms of the coefficients of the original diffusion. Our method of proof relies on the framework provided by Freidlin and Wentzell for diffusion processes on a graph in order to identify the generator of the limiting process. The graph in question consists of one vertex representing the interface region and two infinite segments corresponding to the regions on either side.

Ergodicity of hypoelliptic SDEs driven by fractional Brownian motion

We demonstrate that stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H > 1/2 have similar ergodic properties as SDEs driven by standard Brownian motion. The focus in this article is on hypoelliptic systems satisfying Hörmander's condition. We show that such systems satisfy a suitable version of the strong Feller property and we conclude that they admit a unique stationary solution that is physical in the sense that it does not "look into the future". The main technical result required for the analysis is a bound on the moments of the inverse of the Malliavin covariance matrix, conditional on the past of the driving noise.

Hypoellipticity in Infinite Dimensions

We consider semilinear parabolic stochastic PDEs driven by additive noise. The question addressed in this note is that of the regularity of transition probabilities. If the equation satisfies a Hormander 'bracket condition', then any finite-dimensional projection of the solution has a smooth density with respect to Lebesgue measure. One key ingredient in the argument is a bound on 'Wiener polynomials' that plays a role analogue to Norris' lemma.

Asymptotic coupling and a weak form of Harris' theorem with applications to stochastic delay equations

There are many Markov chains on infinite dimensional spaces whose one-step transition kernels are mutually singular when starting from different initial conditions. We give results which prove unique ergodicity under minimal assumptions on one hand and the existence of a spectral gap under conditions reminiscent of Harris' theorem. The first uses the existence of couplings which draw the solutions together as time goes to infinity. Such "asymptotic couplings" were central to recent work on SPDEs on which this work builds. The emphasis here is on stochastic differential delay equations.Harris' celebrated theorem states that if a Markov chain admits a Lyapunov function whose level sets are "small" (in the sense that transition probabilities are uniformly bounded from below), then it admits a unique invariant measure and transition probabilities converge towards it at exponential speed. This convergence takes place in a total variation norm, weighted by the Lyapunov function. A second aim of this article is to replace the notion of a "small set" by the much weaker notion of a "d-small set," which takes the topology of the underlying space into account via a distance-like function d. With this notion at hand, we prove an analogue to Harris' theorem, where the convergence takes place in a Wasserstein-like distance weighted again by the Lyapunov function. This abstract result is then applied to the framework of stochastic delay equations.

Slow energy dissipation in anharmonic oscillator chains

We study the dynamic behavior at high energies of a chain of anharmonic oscillators coupled at its ends to heat baths at possibly different temperatures. In our setup, each oscillator is subject to a homogeneous anharmonic pinning potential $V_1(q_i) =|q_i|^{2k}/2k$ and harmonic coupling potentials $V_2(q_i- q_{i-1}) = (q_i- q_{i-1})^2/2$ between itself and its nearest neighbors. We consider the case $k > 1$ when the pinning potential is stronger then the coupling potential. At high energy, when a large fraction of the energy is located in the bulk of the chain, breathers appear and block the transport of energy through the system, thus slowing its convergence to equilibrium. In such a regime, we obtain equations for an effective dynamics by averaging out the fast oscillation of the breather. Using this representation and related ideas, we can prove a number of results. When the chain is of length three and $k> 3/2$ we show that there exists a unique invariant measure. If $k > 2$ we further show that the system does not relax exponentially fast to this equilibrium by demonstrating that zero is in the essential spectrum of the generator of the dynamics. When the chain has five or more oscillators and $k> 3/2$ we show that the generator again has zero in its essential spectrum. In addition to these rigorous results, a theory is given for the rate of decrease of the energy when it is concentrated in one of the oscillators without dissipation. Numerical simulations are included which confirm the theory.
