Modal analysis for nanoplasmonics with nonlocal material properties

Plasmonic devices with feature sizes of a few nanometers exhibit effects which can be described by the nonlocal hydrodynamic Drude model. We demonstrate how to exploit contour integral methods for computing eigenfrequencies and resonant states of such systems. We propose an approach for deriving the modal expansion of relevant physical observables. We use the methods to perform a modal analysis for a metal nanowire. All complex eigenfrequencies in a large frequency range and the corresponding resonant states are computed. We identify those resonant states which are relevant for the extinction cross section of the nanowire.

Nanopatterned Sapphire Substrates in Deep-UV LEDs: Is there an Optical Benefit?

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) in the deep ultra-violet (DUV) offer new perspectives for multiple applications ranging from 3D printing to sterilization. However, insufficient light extraction severely limits their efficiency. Nanostructured sapphire substrates in aluminum nitride based LED devices have recently shown to improve crystal growth properties, while their impact on light extraction has not been fully verified. We present a model for understanding the impact of nanostructures on the light extraction capability of DUV-LEDs. The model assumes an isotropic light source in the semiconductor layer stack and combines rigorously computed scattering matrices with a multilayer solver. We find that the optical benefit of using a nanopatterned as opposed to a planar sapphire substrate to be negligible, if parasitic absorption in the p-side of the LED is dominant. If losses in the p-side are reduced to 20%, then for a wavelength of 265 nm an increase of light extraction efficiency from 7.8% to 25.0% is possible due to nanostructuring. We introduce a concept using a diffuse ('Lambertian') reflector as p-contact, further increasing the light extraction efficiency to 34.2%. The results underline that transparent p-sides and reflective p-contacts in DUV-LEDs are indispensable for enhanced light extraction regardless of the interface texture between semiconductor and sapphire substrate. The optical design guidelines presented in this study will accelerate the development of high-efficiency DUV-LEDs, but the model is also readily applicable to other multilayer opto-electronic nanostructured devices such as photovoltaics or photodetectors.

Decomposition of scattered electromagnetic fields into vector spherical wave functions on surfaces with general shapes

Decomposing the field scattered by an object into vector spherical harmonics (VSH) is the prime task when discussing its optical properties on more analytical grounds. Thus far, it was frequently required in the decomposition that the scattered field is available on a spherical surface enclosing the scatterer; being with that adapted to the spatial dependency of the VSHs but being rather incompatible with many numerical solvers. To mitigate this problem, we propose an orthogonal expression for the decomposition that holds for any surface that encloses the scatterer, independently of its shape. We also show that the orthogonal relations remain unchanged when the radiative VSH used for the expansion of the scattered field are substituted by the VSH used for the expansion of the illumination as test functions. This is a key factor for the numerical stability of our decomposition. As example, we use a finite-element based solver to compute the multipole response of a nanorod illuminated by a plane wave and study its convergence properties.

Using Gaussian process regression for efficient parameter reconstruction

Optical scatterometry is a method to measure the size and shape of periodic micro- or nanostructures on surfaces. For this purpose the geometry parameters of the structures are obtained by reproducing experimental measurement results through numerical simulations. We compare the performance of Bayesian optimization to different local minimization algorithms for this numerical optimization problem. Bayesian optimization uses Gaussian-process regression to find promising parameter values. We examine how pre-computed simulation results can be used to train the Gaussian process and to accelerate the optimization.

Antireflective nanotextures for monolithic perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells

Recently, we studied the effect of hexagonal sinusoidal textures on the reflective properties of perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells using the finite element method (FEM). We saw that such nanotextures, applied to the perovskite top cell, can strongly increase the current density utilization from 91% for the optimized planar reference to 98% for the best nanotextured device (period 500 nm and peak-to-valley height 500~nm), where 100% refers to the Tiedje-Yablonovitch limit. In this manuscript we elaborate on some numerical details of that work: we validate an assumption based on the Tiedje-Yablonovitch limit, we present a convergence study for simulations with the finite-element method, and we compare different configurations for sinusoidal nanotextures.

Time-Harmonic Optical Chirality in Inhomogeneous Space

Optical chirality has been recently suggested to complement the physically relevant conserved quantities of the well-known Maxwell's equations. This time-even pseudoscalar is expected to provide further insight in polarization phenomena of electrodynamics such as spectroscopy of chiral molecules. Previously, the corresponding continuity equation was stated for homogeneous lossless media only. We extend the underlying theory to arbitrary setups and analyse piecewise-constant material distributions in particular. Our implementation in a Finite Element Method framework is applied to illustrative examples in order to introduce this novel tool for the analysis of time-harmonic simulations of nano-optical devices.
