Magnetically tunable symmetry-enforced nodal lines producing huge anomalous Hall conductivity in altermagnetic $\alpha$-MnTe

Altermagnetic $\alpha$-MnTe exhibits huge anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) up to room-temperature together with weak ferromagnetism arising from spin and orbital polarizations. We clarify the origin of the large value of the AHC by identifying two sets of distinct symmetry-enforced nodal lines in the valence bands with Mn character, located at $k_z=0$ and $k_z=\frac{\pi}{c}$, protected by mirror symmetry $M_z$ and glide symmetry $G_z = \{M_z\,|\,0,0,\tfrac{c}{2}\}$, respectively. Both nodal lines are energy-dependent with an approximate C$_6$ symmetry, which is reduced to an exact C$_2$ symmetry due to the presence of the N\'eel vector. The highest valence band exhibits a Mexican-hat dispersion, whereas the second-highest valence band exhibits an inverted Mexican-hat dispersion, with nodal lines at the crossing between the two bands. Within first-principles accuracy, we demonstrate that these nodal lines give rise to the large AHC observed experimentally and exhibit a strong interplay with the weak ferromagnetism. We further show that even a small spin canting strongly modifies the nodal lines and the AHC, making them both magnetically tunable. By disentangling the altermagnetic and ferromagnetic contributions to the AHC, the altermagnetic contribution dominates at small canting angles, while the ferromagnetic contribution becomes sizeable for larger values. Using linear dichroism in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show a signature of the nodal line at the border of the Brillouin zone.

Orientation-Driven Large Magnetic Hysteresis of Er(III) Cyclooctatetraenide-Based Single-Ion Magnets Adsorbed on Ag(100)

The molecular self-assembly and the magnetic properties of two cyclooctatetraenide (COT) - based single-ion magnets (SIM) adsorbed on Ag(100) in the sub-monolayer range are reported. Our study combines scanning-tunneling microscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and polarized X-ray absorption spectroscopy to show that Cp*ErCOT (Cp* = 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienide anion) SIMs self-assemble as alternating compact parallel rows including standing-up and lying-down conformations, following the main crystallographic directions of the substrate. Conversely, K[Er(COT)$_2$], obtained from subliming the [K(18-c-6)][Er(COT)$_2$]$\cdot$ 2THF salt, forms uniaxially ordered domains with the (COT)$^{2-}$ rings perpendicular to the substrate plane. The polarization-dependent X-ray absorption spectra reproduced by the multiX simulations suggest that the strong in-plane magnetic anisotropy of K[Er(COT)$_2$]/Ag(100) and the weak out-of-plane anisotropy of Cp*ErCOT/Ag(100) can be attributed to the strikingly different surface ordering of these two complexes. Compared to the bulk phase, surface-supported K[Er(COT)$_2$] exhibits a similarly large hysteresis opening, while the Cp*ErCOT shows a rather small opening. This result reveals that despite structural similarities, the two organometallic SMMs have strongly different magnetic properties when adsorbed on the metal substrate, attributed to the different orientations and the resulting interactions of the ligand rings with the surface.

Phonon Transport in Suspended Single Layer Graphene

We report the first temperature dependent phonon transport measurements in suspended Cu-CVD single layer graphene (SLG) from 15K to 380K using microfabricated suspended devices. The thermal conductance per unit cross section $σ$/A increases with temperature and exhibits a peak near T~280K ($\pm$10K) due to the Umklapp process. At low temperatures (T<140K), the temperature dependent thermal conductivity scales as ~T^{1.5}, suggesting that the main contribution to thermal conductance arises from flexural acoustic (ZA) phonons in suspended SLG. The $σ$/A reaches a high value of 1.7$\times10^5 T^{1.5}$ W/m^2K, which is approaching the expected ballistic phonon thermal conductance for two-dimensional graphene sheets. Our results not only clarify the ambiguity in the thermal conductance, but also demonstrate the potential of Cu-CVD graphene for heat related applications.

Symmetry-breaking transitions in networks of nonlinear circuit elements

We investigate a nonlinear circuit consisting of N tunnel diodes in series, which shows close similarities to a semiconductor superlattice or to a neural network. Each tunnel diode is modeled by a three-variable FitzHugh-Nagumo-like system. The tunnel diodes are coupled globally through a load resistor. We find complex bifurcation scenarios with symmetry-breaking transitions that generate multiple fixed points off the synchronization manifold. We show that multiply degenerate zero-eigenvalue bifurcations occur, which lead to multistable current branches, and that these bifurcations are also degenerate with a Hopf bifurcation. These predicted scenarios of multiple branches and degenerate bifurcations are also found experimentally.
