Condensate Fluctuations in Trapped Bose Gases: Canonical vs. Microcanonical Ensemble

We study the fluctuation of the number of particles in ideal Bose-Einstein condensates, both within the canonical and the microcanonical ensemble. Employing the Mellin-Barnes transformation, we derive simple expressions that link the canonical number of condensate particles, its fluctuation, and the difference between canonical and microcanonical fluctuations to the poles of a Zeta function that is determined by the excited single-particle levels of the trapping potential. For the particular examples of one- and three-dimensional harmonic traps we explore the microcanonical statistics in detail, with the help of the saddle-point method. Emphasizing the close connection between the partition theory of integer numbers and the statistical mechanics of ideal Bosons in one-dimensional harmonic traps, and utilizing thermodynamical arguments, we also derive an accurate formula for the fluctuation of the number of summands that occur when a large integer is partitioned.

Maxwell's Demon at work: Two types of Bose condensate fluctuations in power-law traps

After discussing the key idea underlying the Maxwell's Demon ensemble, we employ this idea for calculating fluctuations of ideal Bose gas condensates in traps with power-law single-particle energy spectra. Two essentially different cases have to be distinguished. If the heat capacity remains continuous at the condensation point in the large-N-limit, the fluctuations of the number of condensate particles vanish linearly with temperature, independent of the trap characteristics. If the heat capacity becomes discontinuous, the fluctuations vanish algebraically with temperature, with an exponent determined by the trap. Our results are based on an integral representation that yields the solution to both the canonical and the microcanonical fluctuation problem in a singularly transparent manner.

From number theory to statistical mechanics: Bose-Einstein condensation in isolated traps

We question the validity of the grand canonical ensemble for the description of Bose-Einstein condensation of small ideal Bose gas samples in isolated harmonic traps. While the ground state fraction and the specific heat capacity can be well approximated with the help of the conventional grand canonical arguments, the calculation of the fluctuation of the number of particles contained in the condensate requires a microcanonical approach. Resorting to the theory of restricted partitions of integer numbers, we present analytical and numerical results for such fluctuations in one- and three-dimensional traps, and show that their magnitude is essentially independent of the total particle number.

Localization Effects in ac-driven Tight-Binding Lattices

We study coherent dynamics of tight-binding systems interacting with static and oscillating external fields. We consider Bloch oscillations and Wannier-Stark localization caused by dc fields, and compare these effects to dynamic localization that occurs in the presence of additional ac fields. Our analysis relies on quasienergy eigenstates, which take over the role of the usual Bloch waves. The widths of the quasienergy bands depend non-monotonically on the field parameters. If there is lattice disorder, the degree of the resulting Anderson localization is determined by the ratio of disorder strength and quasienergy band width. Therefore, the localization lengths can be controlled, within wide ranges, by adjusting the ac amplitude. Experimental realizations of our model systems are given by semiconductor superlattices in far-infrared laser fields, or by ultracold atoms in modulated standing light waves. In both cases the system parameters, as well as the field amplitudes and frequencies, are readily accessible to experimental control, suggesting these as highly attractive candidates for systematic study of localization phenomena.

Classical and Quantum Dynamics of a Periodically Driven Particle in a Triangular Well

We investigate the correspondence between classical and quantum mechanics for periodically time dependent Hamiltonian systems, using the example of a periodically forced particle in a one-dimensional triangular well potential. In particular, we consider quantum mechanical Floquet states associated with resonances in the classical phase space. When the classical motion exhibits {\it sub}harmonic resonances, the corresponding Floquet states maintain the driving field's periodicity through dynamical tunneling. This principle applies both to Floquet states associated with classical invariant vortex tubes surrounding stable, elliptic periodic orbits and to Floquet states that are associated with unstable, hyperbolic periodic orbits. The triangular well model also poses a yet unsolved mathematical problem, related to perturbation theory for systems with a dense pure point spectrum. The present approximate analytical and numerical results indicate that quantum tunneling between different resonance zones is of crucial importance for the question whether the driven triangular well has a dense point or an absolutely continuous quasienergy spectrum, or whether there is a transition from the one to the other.

ac-Field-Controlled Anderson Localization in Disordered Semiconductor Superlattices

An ac field, tuned exactly to resonance with the Stark ladder in an ideal tight binding lattice under strong dc bias, counteracts Wannier-Stark localization and leads to the emergence of extended Floquet states. If there is random disorder, these states localize. The localization lengths depend non-monotonically on the ac field amplitude and become essentially zero at certain parameters. This effect is of possible relevance for characterizing the quality of superlattice samples, and for performing experiments on Anderson localization in systems with well-defined disorder.

Ac Stark Effects and Harmonic Generation in Periodic Potentials

The ac Stark effect can shift initially nonresonant minibands in semiconductor superlattices into multiphoton resonances. This effect can result in strongly enhanced generation of a particular desired harmonic of the driving laser frequency, at isolated values of the amplitude.

Subharmonic Generation in Quantum Systems

We show how the classical-quantum correspondence permits long-lived subharmonic motion in a quantum system driven by a periodic force. Exponentially small deviations from exact subharmonicity are due to coherent tunneling between quantized vortex tubes which surround classical elliptic periodic orbits.
