The one-dimensional log-gas free energy has a unique minimiser

We prove that, at every positive temperature, the infinite-volume free energy of the one dimensional log-gas, or beta-ensemble, has a unique minimiser, which is the Sine-beta process arising from random matrix theory. We rely on a quantitative displacement convexity argument at the level of point processes, and on the screening procedure introduced by Sandier-Serfaty.

A large-scale regularity theory for the Monge-Ampere equation with rough data and application to the optimal matching problem

The aim of this paper is to obtain quantitative bounds for solutions to the optimal matching problem in dimension two. These bounds show that up to a logarithmically divergent shift, the optimal transport maps are close to be the identity at every scale. These bounds allow us to pass to the limit as the system size goes to infinity and construct a locally optimal coupling between the Lebesgue measure and the Poisson point process which retains the stationarity properties of the Poisson point process only at the level of second-order differences. Our quantitative bounds are obtained through a Campanato iteration scheme based on a deterministic and a stochastic ingredient. The deterministic part, which can be seen as our main contribution, is a regularity result for Monge-Ampère equations with rough right-hand side. Since we believe that it could be useful in other contexts, we prove it for general space dimensions. The stochastic part is a concentration result for the optimal matching problem which builds on previous work by Ambrosio, Stra and Trevisan.

A Benamou-Brenier formulation of martingale optimal transport

We introduce a Benamou-Brenier formulation for the continuous-time martingale optimal transport problem as a weak length relaxation of its discrete-time counterpart. By the correspondence between classical martingale problems and Fokker-Planck equations, we obtain an equivalent PDE formulation for which basic properties such as existence, duality and geodesic equations can be analytically studied, yielding corresponding results for the stochastic formulation. In the one dimensional case, sufficient conditions for finiteness of the cost are also given and a link between geodesics and porous medium equations is partially investigated.

Measure-valued martingales and optimality of Bass-type solutions to the Skorokhod Embedding Problem

In this paper we consider (probability-)measure valued processes, which we call MVMs, which have a natural martingale structure. Following previous work of Eldan and Cox-Källblad, these processes are known to have a close connection to the solutions to the Skorokhod Embedding Problem. In this paper, we consider properties of these processes, and in particular, we are able to show that the MVMs connected to the Bass and Root embeddings have natural measure-valued analogues which also possess natural optimality properties. We also introduce a new MVM which is a generalisation of both the Bass and Root MVMs.

The geometry of multi-marginal Skorokhod Embedding

The Skorokhod Embedding Problem (SEP) is one of the classical problems in the study of stochastic processes, with applications in many different fields (cf.~ the surveys \cite{Ob04,Ho11}). Many of these applications have natural multi-marginal extensions leading to the \emph{(optimal) multi-marginal Skorokhod problem} (MSEP). Some of the first papers to consider this problem are \cite{Ho98b, BrHoRo01b, MaYo02}. However, this turns out to be difficult using existing techniques: only recently a complete solution was be obtained in \cite{CoObTo15} establishing an extension of the Root construction, while other instances are only partially answered or remain wide open. In this paper, we extend the theory developed in \cite{BeCoHu14} to the multi-marginal setup which is comparable to the extension of the optimal transport problem to the multi-marginal optimal transport problem. As for the one-marginal case, this viewpoint turns out to be very powerful. In particular, we are able to show that all classical optimal embeddings have natural multi-marginal counterparts. Notably these different constructions are linked through a joint geometric structure and the classical solutions are recovered as particular cases. Moreover, our results also have consequences for the study of the martingale transport problem as well as the peacock problem.

Monotonicity Preserving Transformations of MOT and SEP

Recently, \cite{BeJu16, BeNuTo16} established that optimizers to the martingale optimal transport problem (MOT) are concentrated on $c$-monotone sets. In this article we characterize monotonicity preserving transformations revealing certain symmetries between optimizers of MOT for different cost functions. Due to the intimate connection of MOT and the Skorokhod embedding problem (SEP) these transformations are also monotonicity preserving and disclose symmetries for certain solutions to the optimal SEP. Furthermore, the SEP picture allows to easily understand the geometry of these transformations once we have established the SEP counterparts to the known solutions of MOT based on the monotonicity principle for SEP which in turn allows to directly read off the structure of the MOT optimizers.

Pathwise super-replication via Vovk's outer measure

Since Hobson's seminal paper [D. Hobson: Robust hedging of the lookback option. In: Finance Stoch. (1998)] the connection between model-independent pricing and the Skorokhod embedding problem has been a driving force in robust finance. We establish a general pricing-hedging duality for financial derivatives which are susceptible to the Skorokhod approach. Using Vovk's approach to mathematical finance we derive a model-independent super-replication theorem in continuous time, given information on finitely many marginals. Our result covers a broad range of exotic derivatives, including lookback options, discretely monitored Asian options, and options on realized variance.

Optimal Transport and Skorokhod Embedding

The Skorokhod embedding problem is to represent a given probability as the distribution of Brownian motion at a chosen stopping time. Over the last 50 years this has become one of the important classical problems in probability theory and a number of authors have constructed solutions with particular optimality properties. These constructions employ a variety of techniques ranging from excursion theory to potential and PDE theory and have been used in many different branches of pure and applied probability. We develop a new approach to Skorokhod embedding based on ideas and concepts from optimal mass transport. In analogy to the celebrated article of Gangbo and McCann on the geometry of optimal transport, we establish a geometric characterization of Skorokhod embeddings with desired optimality properties. This leads to a systematic method to construct optimal embeddings. It allows us, for the first time, to derive all known optimal Skorokhod embeddings as special cases of one unified construction and leads to a variety of new embeddings. While previous constructions typically used particular properties of Brownian motion, our approach applies to all sufficiently regular Markov processes.

Tranport estimates for random measures in dimension one

We show that there is a sharp threshold in dimension one for the transport cost between the Lebesgue measure $λ$ and an invariant random measure $μ$ of unit intensity to be finite. We show that for \emph{any} such random measure the $L^1$ cost are infinite provided that the first central moments $\mathbb{E}[|n-μ([0,n))|]$ diverge. Furthermore, we establish simple and sharp criteria, based on the variance of $μ([0,n)]$, for the $L^p$ cost to be finite for $0<p<1$.

Root to Kellerer

We revisit Kellerer's Theorem, that is, we show that for a family of real probability distributions $(μ_t)_{t\in [0,1]}$ which increases in convex order there exists a Markov martingale $(S_t)_{t\in[0,1]}$ s.t.\ $S_t\sim μ_t$. To establish the result, we observe that the set of martingale measures with given marginals carries a natural compact Polish topology. Based on a particular property of the martingale coupling associated to Root's embedding this allows for a relatively concise proof of Kellerer's theorem. We emphasize that many of our arguments are borrowed from Kellerer \cite{Ke72}, Lowther \cite{Lo07}, and Hirsch-Roynette-Profeta-Yor \cite{HiPr11,HiRo12}.

Existence and uniqueness of optimal transport maps

Let $(X,d,m)$ be a proper, non-branching, metric measure space. We show existence and uniqueness of optimal transport maps for cost written as non-decreasing and strictly convex functions of the distance, provided $(X,d,m)$ satisfies a new weak property concerning the behavior of $m$ under the shrinking of sets to points, see Assumption 1. This in particular covers spaces satisfying the measure contraction property. We also prove a stability property for Assumption 1: If $(X,d,m)$ satisfies Assumption 1 and $\tilde m = g\cdot m$, for some continuous function $g >0$, then also $(X,d,\tilde m)$ verifies Assumption 1. Since these changes in the reference measures do not preserve any Ricci type curvature bounds, this shows that our condition is strictly weaker than measure contraction property.

Curvature bounds for configuration spaces

We show that the configuration space over a manifold M inherits many curvature properties of the manifold. For instance, we show that a lower Ricci curvature bound on M implies for the configuration space a lower Ricci curvature bound in the sense of Lott-Sturm-Villani, the Bochner inequality, gradient estimates and Wasserstein contraction. Moreover, we show that the heat flow on the configuration space, or the infinite independent particle process, can be identified as the gradient flow of the entropy.

Optimal transport from Lebesgue to Poisson

This paper is devoted to the study of couplings of the Lebesgue measure and the Poisson point process. We prove existence and uniqueness of an optimal coupling whenever the asymptotic mean transportation cost is finite. Moreover, we give precise conditions for the latter which demonstrate a sharp threshold at d=2. The cost will be defined in terms of an arbitrary increasing function of the distance. The coupling will be realized by means of a transport map ("allocation map") which assigns to each Poisson point a set ("cell") of Lebesgue measure 1. In the case of quadratic costs, all these cells will be convex polytopes.

Self-Intersection of Optimal geodesics

Let $(X,d,m)$ be a geodesic metric measure space. Consider a geodesic $μ_{t}$ in the $L^{2}$-Wasserstein space. Then as $s$ goes to $t$ the support of $μ_{s}$ and the support of $μ_{t}$ have to overlap, provided an upper bound on the densities holds. We give a more precise formulation of this self-intersection property. We consider for each $t$ the set of times for which a geodesic belongs to the support of $μ_{t}$ and we prove that $t$ is a point of Lebesgue density 1 for this set, in the integral sense. Our result applies to spaces satisfying $\mathsf{CD}(K,\infty)$. The non branching property is not needed.

Optimal Transport and Tessellation

Optimal transport from the volume measure to a convex combination of Dirac measures yields a tessellation of a Riemannian manifold into pieces of arbitrary relative size. This tessellation is studied for the cost functions $c_p(z,y)=\frac{1}{p}d^p(z,y)$ and $1\leq p<\infty$. Geometric descriptions of the tessellations for all $p$ is obtained for compact subsets of the Euclidean space. For $p=2$ this approach yields Laguerre tessellations. For $p=1$ it induces Johnson Mehl diagrams for all compact Riemannian manifolds.

Optimal transport between random measures

We study couplings $q^\bullet$ of two equivariant random measures $λ^\bullet$ and $μ^\bullet$ on a Riemannian manifold $(M,d,m)$. Given a cost function we ask for minimizers of the mean transportation cost per volume. In case the minimal/optimal cost is finite and $λ^ω\ll m$ we prove that there is a unique equivariant coupling minimizing the mean transportation cost per volume. Moreover, the optimal coupling is induced by a transportation map, $q^\bullet=(id,T)_*λ^\bullet.$ We show that the optimal transportation map can be approximated by solutions to classical optimal transportation problems on bounded regions. In case of $L^p-$cost the optimal transportation cost per volume defines a metric on the space of equivariant random measure with unit intensity.
