Strong and weak divergence in finite time of Euler's method for stochastic differential equations with non-globally Lipschitz continuous coefficients

The stochastic Euler scheme is known to converge to the exact solution of a stochastic differential equation with globally Lipschitz continuous drift and diffusion coefficient. Recent results extend this convergence to coefficients which grow at most linearly. For superlinearly growing coefficients finite-time convergence in the strong mean square sense remained an open question according to [Higham, Mao & Stuart (2002); Strong convergence of Euler-type methods for nonlinear stochastic differential equations, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 40, no. 3, 1041-1063]. In this article we answer this question to the negative and prove for a large class of stochastic differential equations with non-globally Lipschitz continuous coefficients that Euler's approximation converges neither in the strong mean square sense nor in the numerically weak sense to the exact solution at a finite time point. Even worse, the difference of the exact solution and of the numerical approximation at a finite time point diverges to infinity in the strong mean square sense and in the numerically weak sense.

Time Reversal of Some Stationary Jump-Diffusion Processes from Population Genetics

We describe the processes obtained by time reversal of a class of stationary jump-diffusion processes that model the dynamics of genetic variation in populations subject to repeated bottlenecks. Assuming that only one lineage survives each bottleneck, the forward process is a diffusion on [0,1] that jumps to the boundary before diffusing back into the interior. We show that the behavior of the time-reversed process depends on whether the boundaries are accessible to the diffusive motion of the forward process. If a boundary point is inaccessible to the forward diffusion, then time reversal leads to a jump-diffusion that jumps immediately into the interior whenever it arrives at that point. If, instead, a boundary point is accessible, then the jumps off of that point are governed by a weighted local time of the time-reversed process.

The Virgin Island Model

A continuous mass population model with local competition is constructed where every emigrant colonizes an unpopulated island. The population founded by an emigrant is modeled as excursion from zero of an one-dimensional diffusion. With this excursion measure, we construct a process which we call Virgin Island Model. Furthermore, a necessary and sufficient condition for extinction of the total population is obtained for finite initial total mass.

Graphical Representation of some Duality Relations in Stochastic Population Models

We derive a unified stochastic picture for the duality of a resampling-selection model with a branching-coalescing particle process (cf. http://www.ams.org/mathscinet-getitem?mr=MR2123250) and for the self-duality of Feller's branching diffusion with logistic growth (cf. math/0509612). The two dual processes are approximated by particle processes which are forward and backward processes in a graphical representation. We identify duality relations between the basic building blocks of the particle processes which lead to the two dualities mentioned above.
