Isometric Rigidity of Metric Constructions with respect to Wasserstein Spaces

In this paper we study the isometric rigidity of certain classes of metric spaces with respect to the $p$-Wasserstein space. We prove that spaces that split a separable Hilbert space are not isometrically rigid with respect to $\mathbb{P}_2$. We then prove that infinite rays are isometrically rigid with respect to $\mathbb{P}_p$ for any $p\geq 1$, whereas taking infinite half-cylinders (i.e.\ product spaces of the form $X\times [0,\infty)$) over compact non-branching geodesic spaces preserves isometric rigidity with respect to $\mathbb{P}_p$, for $p>1$. Finally, we prove that spherical suspensions over compact spaces with diameter less than $\pi/2$ are isometrically rigid with respect to $\mathbb{P}_p$, for $p>1$.

Manifolds that admit a double disk-bundle decomposition

Under mild topological restrictions, this article establishes that a smooth, closed, simply connected manifold of dimension at most seven which can be decomposed as the union of two disk bundles must be rationally elliptic. In dimension five, such manifolds are classified up to diffeomorphism, while the same is true in dimension six when either the second Betti number vanishes or the third Betti number is non-trivial.

Rational spheres and double disk bundles

A manifold $M$ is said to be a double disk bundle if it can be decomposed as a union of two disk bundles glued together by a diffeomorphism of their boundaries. We show that if $M^n$ is a closed simply connected $n$-manifold with $n$ even which is simultaneously a double disk bundle and a rational homology sphere, then $M$ must be homeomorphic to a sphere. In addition, we show that in any dimension, if $M$ is a highly connected rational homology sphere which supports a double disk bundle structure, then its "middle" cohomlogy group must be cyclic.

Torus actions on rationally elliptic manifolds

An upper bound is obtained on the rank of a torus which can act smoothly and effectively on a smooth, closed, simply connected, rationally elliptic manifold. In the maximal-rank case, the manifolds admitting such actions are classified up to equivariant rational homotopy type.

Highly connected 7-manifolds, the linking form and non-negative curvature

In a recent article, the authors constructed a six-parameter family of highly connected 7-manifolds which admit an SO(3)-invariant metric of non-negative sectional curvature. Each member of this family is the total space of a Seifert fibration with generic fibre $S^3$ and, in particular, has the cohomology ring of an $S^3$-bundle over $S^4$. In the present article, the linking form of these manifolds is computed and used to demonstrate that the family contains infinitely many manifolds which are not even homotopy equivalent to an $S^3$-bundle over $S^4$, the first time that any such spaces have been shown to admit non-negative sectional curvature.

Highly connected 7-manifolds and non-negative curvature

In this article, a six-parameter family of highly connected 7-manifolds which admit an SO(3)-invariant metric of non-negative sectional curvature is constructed and the Eells-Kuiper invariant of each is computed. In particular, it follows that all exotic spheres in dimension 7 admit an SO(3)-invariant metric of non-negative curvature.

Semi-free actions with manifold orbit spaces

In this paper, we study smooth, semi-free actions on closed, smooth, simply connected manifolds, such that the orbit space is a smoothable manifold. We show that the only simply connected $5$-manifolds admitting a smooth, semi-free circle action with fixed-point components of codimension $4$ are connected sums of $S^3$-bundles over $S^2$. Furthermore, the Betti numbers of the $5$-manifolds and of the quotient $4$-manifolds are related by a simple formula involving the number of fixed-point components. We also investigate semi-free $S^3$ actions on simply connected $8$-manifolds with quotient a $5$-manifold and show, in particular, that there are strong restrictions on the topology of the $8$-manifold.

Torus orbifolds, slice-maximal torus actions and rational ellipticity

In this work, it is shown that a simply-connected, rationally-elliptic torus orbifold is equivariantly rationally homotopy equivalent to the quotient of a product of spheres by an almost-free, linear torus action, where this torus has rank equal to the number of odd-dimensional spherical factors in the product. As an application, simply-connected, rationally-elliptic manifolds admitting slice-maximal torus actions are classified up to equivariant rational homotopy. The case where the rational-ellipticity hypothesis is replaced by non-negative curvature is also discussed, and the Bott Conjecture in the presence of a slice-maximal torus action is proved.

A note on totally geodesic embeddings of Eschenburg spaces into Bazaikin spaces

In this note it is shown that every 7-dimensional Eschenburg space can be totally geodesically embedded into infinitely many topologically distinct 13-dimensional Bazaikin spaces. Furthermore, examples are given which show that, under the known construction, it is not always possible to totally geodesically embed a positively curved Eschenburg space into a Bazaikin space with positive curvature.

On the curvature of biquotients

As a means to better understanding manifolds with positive curvature, there has been much recent interest in the study of non-negatively curved manifolds which contain either a point or an open dense set of points at which all 2-planes have positive curvature. We study infinite families of biquotients defined by Eschenburg and Bazaikin from this viewpoint, together with torus quotients of $S^3 \x S^3$.

Some new examples with almost positive curvature

As a means to better understanding manifolds with positive curvature, there has been much recent interest in the study of non-negatively curved manifolds which contain points at which all 2-planes have positive curvature. We show that there are generalisations of the well-known Eschenburg spaces and quotients of $\sph^7 \x \sph^7$ which admit metrics with this property.

Cohomogeneity-two torus actions on non-negatively curved manifolds of low dimension

Let $M^n$, $n \in \{4,5,6\}$, be a compact, simply connected $n$-manifold which admits some Riemannian metric with non-negative curvature and an isometry group of maximal possible rank. Then any smooth, effective action on $M^n$ by a torus $T^{n-2}$ is equivariantly diffeomorphic to an isometric action on a normal biquotient. Furthermore, it follows that any effective, isometric circle action on a compact, simply connected, non-negatively curved four-dimensional manifold is equivariantly diffeomorphic to an effective, isometric action on a normal biquotient.

Riemannian submersions from simple, compact Lie groups

In this paper we construct infinitely many examples of a Riemannian submersion from a simple, compact Lie group $G$ with bi-invariant metric onto a smooth manifold that cannot be a quotient of $G$ by a group action. This partially addresses a question of K. Grove's about Riemannian submersions from Lie groups.

Almost positive curvature on the Gromoll-Meyer sphere

Gromoll and Meyer have represented a certain exotic 7-sphere $Σ^7$ as a biquotient of the Lie group $G = Sp(2)$. We show for a 2-parameter family of left invariant metrics on $G$ that the induced metric on $Σ^7$ has strictly positive sectional curvature at all points outside four subvarieties of codimension $\geq 1$ which we describe explicitly.
