Thermalization of isolated quantum systems

Understanding the evolution towards thermal equilibrium of an isolated quantum system is at the foundation of statistical mechanics and a subject of interest in such diverse areas as cold atom physics or the quantum mechanics of black holes. Since a pure state can never evolve into a thermal density matrix, the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) has been put forward by Deutsch and Srednicki as a way to explain this apparent thermalization, similarly to what the ergodic theorem does in classical mechanics. In this paper this hypothesis is tested numerically. First, it is observed that thermalization happens in a subspace of states (the Krylov subspace) with dimension much smaller than that of the total Hilbert space. We check numerically the validity of ETH in such a subspace, for a system of hard core bosons on a two-dimensional lattice. We then discuss how well the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian projected on the Krylov subspace represent the true eigenstates. This discussion is aided by bringing the projected Hamiltonian to the tridiagonal form and interpreting it as an Anderson localization problem for a finite one-dimensional chain. We also consider thermalization of a subsystem and argue that generation of a large entanglement entropy can lead to a thermal density matrix for the subsystem well before the whole system thermalizes. Finally, we comment on possible implications of ETH in quantum gravity.

Wilson loops and Riemann theta functions II

In this paper we extend and simplify previous results regarding the computation of Euclidean Wilson loops in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, or, equivalently, the problem of finding minimal area surfaces in hyperbolic space (Euclidean AdS3). If the Wilson loop is given by a boundary curve X(s) we define, using the integrable properties of the system, a family of curves X(lambda,s) depending on a complex parameter lambda known as the spectral parameter. This family has remarkable properties. As a function of lambda, X(lambda,s) has cuts and therefore is appropriately defined on a hyperelliptic Riemann surface, namely it determines the spectral curve of the problem. Moreover, X(lambda,s) has an essential singularity at the origin lambda=0. The coefficients of the expansion of X(lambda,s) around lambda=0, when appropriately integrated along the curve give the area of the corresponding minimal area surface. Furthermore we show that the same construction allows the computation of certain surfaces with one or more boundaries corresponding to Wilson loop correlators. We extend the area formula for that case and give some concrete examples. As the main example we consider a surface ending on two concentric circles and show how the boundary circles can be deformed by introducing extra cuts in the spectral curve.

Rotating Wilson loops and open strings in AdS3

The AdS/CFT correspondence relates N=4 super Yang-Mills on S3 to type IIB string theory on AdS5xS5. In this context, a quark/anti-quark pair moving on an S1 inside S3 following prescribed trajectories is dual to an open string ending on the boundary of AdS3. In this paper we study the corresponding classical string solutions. The Pohlmeyer reduction reduces the equations of motion to a generalized sinh-Gordon equation. This equation includes, as particular cases, the Liouville equation as well as the sinh/cosh-Gordon equations. We study generic solutions of the Liouville equation and finite gap solutions of the sinh/cosh-Gordon ones. The latter ones are written in terms of Riemann theta functions. The corresponding string solutions are reconstructed giving new solutions and a broad understanding of open strings moving in AdS3. As a further example, the simple case of a rigidly rotating string is shown to exhibit these three behaviors depending on a simple relation between its angular velocity and the angular separation between its endpoints.

Shock waves in strongly coupled plasmas II

In a recent paper we have analyzed the AdS/CFT duals to shock waves propagating in the N=4 plasma. Here we study further properties of the system. In the gravity description we consider the properties of the dual black holes, showing in particular that they are stationary black holes with expanding horizons. This is possible because the horizon is not compact; in the fluid, this corresponds to the situation when entropy is being produced and carried away to infinity. We also consider shocks in dimensionalities d other than four and find that, for plasmas whose duals are given by asymptotically AdS spaces, the exponential tail of the shock on the supersonic side shrinks as gamma^(-2/d) as the velocity approaches the speed of light (the Lorentz factor gamma goes to infinity). This generalizes the behavior gamma^(-1/2) we have found previously for d=4. Finally, we consider corrugations of the shock front and show that the shock is stable under such perturbations. There are, however, long lived modes, excitations of which describe generation of sound by the shock wave, the energy for this being provided by the incoming fluid.

Notes on Euclidean Wilson loops and Riemann Theta functions

The AdS/CFT correspondence relates Wilson loops in N=4 SYM theory to minimal area surfaces in AdS5 space. In this paper we consider the case of Euclidean flat Wilson loops which are related to minimal area surfaces in Euclidean AdS3 space. Using known mathematical results for such minimal area surfaces we describe an infinite parameter family of analytic solutions for closed Wilson loops. The solutions are given in terms of Riemann theta functions and the validity of the equations of motion is proven based on the trisecant identity. The world-sheet has the topology of a disk and the renormalized area is written as a finite, one-dimensional contour integral over the world-sheet boundary. An example is discussed in detail with plots of the corresponding surfaces. Further, for each Wilson loops we explicitly construct a one parameter family of deformations that preserve the area. The parameter is the so called spectral parameter. Finally, for genus three we find a map between these Wilson loops and closed curves inside the Riemann surface.

Shock waves in strongly coupled plasmas

Shock waves are supersonic disturbances propagating in a fluid and giving rise to dissipation and drag. Weak shocks, i.e., those of small amplitude, can be well described within the hydrodynamic approximation. On the other hand, strong shocks are discontinuous within hydrodynamics and therefore probe the microscopics of the theory. In this paper we consider the case of the strongly coupled N=4 plasma whose microscopic description, applicable for scales smaller than the inverse temperature, is given in terms of gravity in an asymptotically $AdS_5$ space. In the gravity approximation, weak and strong shocks should be described by smooth metrics with no discontinuities. For weak shocks we find the dual metric in a derivative expansion and for strong shocks we use linearized gravity to find the exponential tail that determines the width of the shock. In particular we find that, when the velocity of the fluid relative to the shock approaches the speed of light $v\to 1$ the penetration depth $\ell$ scales as $\ell\sim (1-v^2)^{1/4}$. We compare the results with second order hydrodynamics and the Israel-Stewart approximation. Although they all agree in the hydrodynamic regime of weak shocks, we show that there is not even qualitative agreement for strong shocks. For the gravity side, the existence of shock waves implies that there are disturbances of constant shape propagating on the horizon of the dual black holes.

Double-helix Wilson loops: case of two angular momenta

Recently, Wilson loops with the shape of a double helix have played an important role in studying large spin operators in gauge theories. They correspond to a quark and an anti-quark moving in circles on an S3 (and therefore each of them describes a helix in RxS3). In this paper we consider the case where the particles have two angular momenta on the S3. The string solution corresponding to such Wilson loop can be found using the relation to the Neumann-Rosochatius system allowing the computation of the energy and angular momenta of the configuration. The particular case of only one angular momentum is also considered. It can be thought as an analytic continuation of the rotating strings which are dual to operators in the SL(2) sector of N=4 SYM.

Summing planar diagrams

We consider the sum of planar diagrams for open strings propagating on N D3-branes and show that it can be recast as the propagation of a closed string with a Hamiltonian H = H_0 - g_s N P where H_0 is the free Hamiltonian and P is the hole or loop insertion operator. We compute explicitly P and study its properties. When the distance y to the D3-branes is much larger than the string length, y >> l_s, small holes dominate and H becomes a supersymmetric Hamiltonian describing the propagation of a closed string in the full D3-brane supergravity background in a particular gauge that we call sigma-gauge. At strong coupling, g_s N >> 1, there is a region 1 << y << (g_sN)^(1/4) where H is a supersymmetric Hamiltonian describing the propagation of closed strings in AdS_5xS^5. We emphasize that both results follow from the open string planar diagrams without any reference to the existence of a D3-brane supergravity background. A by-product of our analysis is a closed form for the scattering of a generic closed string state from a D3-brane. Finally, we briefly discuss how this method could be applied to a field theory and describe a way to rewrite the planar Feynman diagrams as the propagation of a string with a non-local Hamiltonian by identifying the shape of the string with the trajectory of the particle.

Scattering of single spikes

We apply the dressing method to a string solution given by a static string wrapped around the equator of a three-sphere and find that the result is the single spike solution recently discussed in the literature. Further application of the method allows the construction of solutions with multiple spikes. In particular we construct the solution describing the scattering of two single spikes and compute the scattering phase shift. As a function of the dressing parameters, the result is exactly the same as the one for the giant magnon, up to non-logarithmic terms. This suggests that the single spikes should be described by an integrable spin chain closely related to the one associated to the giant magnons. The field theory interpretation of such spin chain however is still unclear.

Single spike solutions for strings on S2 and S3

We study solutions for rigidly rotating strings on a two sphere. Among them we find two limiting cases that have a particular interest, one is the already known giant magnon and the other we call the single spike solution. The limiting behavior of this last solution is a string infinitely wrapped around the equator. It differs from that solution by the existence of a single spike of height theta that points toward the north pole. We study its properties and compute its energy E and angular momentum J as a function of theta. We further generalize the solution by adding one angular momentum to obtain a solution on S3. We find a spin chain interpretations of these results in terms of free fermions and the Hubbard model but the exact relation with the same models derived from the field theory is not clear.

Planar diagrams in light-cone gauge

We consider the open string vacuum amplitude determining the interaction between a stack of N D3-branes and a single probe brane. When using light cone gauge, it is clear that the sum of planar diagrams (relevant in the large-N limit) is described by the free propagation of a closed string. A naive calculation suggests that the Hamiltonian of the closed string is of the form H = H0 - (g_s N) P. The same form of the Hamiltonian follows from considering the bosonic part of the closed string action propagating in the full D3-brane background suggesting the naive calculation captures the correct information. Further, we compute explicitly P from the open string side in the bosonic sector and show that, in a certain limit, the result agrees with the closed string expectations up to extra terms due to the fact that we ignored the fermionic sector. We briefly discuss extensions of the results to the superstring and to the sum of planar diagrams in field theory. In particular we argue that the calculations seem valid whenever one can define a sigma <-> tau dual Hamiltonian in the world-sheet which in principle does not require the existence of a string action. This seems more generic than the existence of a string dual in the large-N limit.

Random walks and the Hagedorn transition

We study details of the approach to the Hagedorn temperature in string theory in various static spacetime backgrounds. We show that the partition function for a {\it single} string at finite temperature is the torus amplitude restricted to unit winding around Euclidean time. We use the worldsheet path integral to derive the statement that the the sum over random walks of the thermal scalar near the Hagedorn transition is precisely the image under a modular transformation of the sum over spatial configurations of a single highly excited string. We compute the radius of gyration of thermally excited strings in $AdS_D\times S^n$. We show that the winding mode indicates an instability despite the AdS curvature at large radius, and that the negative mass squared decreases with decreasing AdS radius, much like the type 0 tachyon. We add further arguments to statements by Barbon and Rabinovici, and by Adams {\it et. al.}, that the Euclidean AdS black hole can thought of as a condensate of the thermal scalar. We use this to provide circumstantial evidence that the condensation of the thermal scalar decouples closed string modes.

Semiclassical strings in Sasaki-Einstein manifolds and long operators in N=1 gauge theories

We study the AdS/CFT relation between an infinite class of 5-d Ypq Sasaki-Einstein metrics and the corresponding quiver theories. The long BPS operators of the field theories are matched to massless geodesics in the geometries, providing a test of AdS/CFT for these cases. Certain small fluctuations (in the BMN sense) can also be successfully compared. We then go further and find, using an appropriate limit, a reduced action, first order in time derivatives, which describes strings with large R-charge. In the field theory we consider holomorphic operators with large winding numbers around the quiver and find, interestingly, that, after certain simplifying assumptions, they can be described effectively as strings moving in a particular metric. Although not equal, the metric is similar to the one in the bulk. We find it encouraging that a string picture emerges directly from the field theory and discuss possible ways to improve the agreement.

Renormalization group flow of reduced string actions

It has been argued that certain reduced actions play a role in AdS/CFT when comparing fast moving strings to long single trace operators in gauge theories. Such actions arise in two ways: as a limit of the string action and as a description of long single trace field theory operators. They are non-relativistic sigma models with the target space usually being a Kahler manifold. They are non-renormalizable and need a cut-off in the wave-length. If the total spin (or charge) contained in a minimal wavelength is large compared to one, the system behaves approximately classically and an expansion in loops is meaningful. In this paper we apply the renormalization group procedure to such actions and find, at one-loop, that the Kahler potential flows in the infrared to a Kahler-Einstein one. Therefore, in this context, the anomalous dimensions of long operators are determined by a fixed point. This suggests that certain features of the large N-limit might be independent of the detailed properties of a gauge theory.

Spiky strings and single trace operators in gauge theories

We consider single trace operators of the form O_{m_1 ... m_n} = tr D_+^{m_1} F ... D_+^{m_n} F which are common to all gauge theories. We argue that, when all m_i are equal and large, they have a dual description as strings with cusps, or spikes, one for each field F. In the case of N=4 SYM, we compute the energy as a function of angular momentum by finding the corresponding solutions in AdS_5 and compare with a 1-loop calculation of the anomalous dimension. As in the case of two spikes (twist two operators), there is agreement in the functional form but not in the coupling constant dependence. After that, we analyze the system in more detail and find an effective classical mechanics describing the motion of the spikes. In the appropriate limit, it is the same (up to the coupling constant dependence) as the coherent state description of linear combinations of the operators O_{m_1 ... m_n} such that all m_i are equal on average. This agreement provides a map between the operators in the boundary and the position of the spikes in the bulk. We further suggest that moving the spikes in other directions should describe operators with derivatives other than D_+ indicating that these ideas are quite generic and should help in unraveling the string description of the large-N limit of gauge theories.

From Sasaki-Einstein spaces to quivers via BPS geodesics: Lpqr

The AdS/CFT correspondence between Sasaki-Einstein spaces and quiver gauge theories is studied from the perspective of massless BPS geodesics. The recently constructed toric Lpqr geometries are considered: we determine the dual superconformal quivers and the spectrum of BPS mesons. The conformal anomaly is compared with the volumes of the manifolds. The U(1)^2_F x U(1)_R global symmetry quantum numbers of the mesonic operators are successfully matched with the conserved momenta of the geodesics, providing a test of AdS/CFT duality. The correspondence between BPS mesons and geodesics allows to find new precise relations between the two sides of the duality. In particular the parameters that characterize the geometry are mapped directly to the parameters used for a-maximization in the field theory. The analysis simplifies for the special case of the Lpqq models, which are shown to correspond to the known "generalized conifolds". These geometries can break conformal invariance through toric deformations of the complex structure.

Regge Trajectories for Mesons in the Holographic Dual of Large-N_c QCD

We discuss Regge trajectories of dynamical mesons in large-N_c QCD, using the supergravity background describing N_c D4-branes compactified on a thermal circle. The flavor degrees of freedom arise from the addition of N_f<<N_c D6 probe branes. Our work provides a string theoretical derivation, via the gauge/string correspondence, of a phenomenological model describing the meson as rotating point-like massive particles connected by a flux string. The massive endpoints induce nonlinearities for the Regge trajectory. For light quarks the Regge trajectories of mesons are essentially linear. For massive quarks our trajectories qualitatively capture the nonlinearity detected in lattice calculations.

Towards a holographic dual of large-N_c QCD

We study N_f D6-brane probes in the supergravity background dual to N_c D4-branes compactified on a circle with supersymmetry-breaking boundary conditions. In the limit in which the resulting Kaluza--Klein modes decouple, the gauge theory reduces to non-supersymmetric, four-dimensional QCD with N_c colours and N_f << N_c flavours. As expected, this decoupling is not fully realised within the supergravity/Born--Infeld approximation. For N_f = 1 and massless quarks, m_q = 0, we exhibit spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking by a quark condensate, <\bar{psi} ψ> \neq 0, and find the associated massless `pion' in the spectrum. The latter becomes massive for m_q > 0, obeying the Gell-Mann--Oakes--Renner relation: M_pi^2= - m_q <\bar{psi} ψ> / \f_pi^2. In the case N_f > 1 we provide a holographic version of the Vafa--Witten theorem, which states that the U(N_f) flavour symmetry cannot be spontaneously broken. Further we find N_f^2 - 1 unexpectedly light pseudo-scalar mesons in the spectrum. We argue that these are not (pseudo) Goldstone bosons and speculate on the string mechanism responsible for their lightness. We then study the theory at finite temperature and exhibit a phase transition associated with a discontinuity in the chiral condensate. D6/anti-D6 pairs are also briefly discussed.
