Leveraging Taxonomy Similarity for Next Activity Prediction in Patient Treatment

The rapid progress in modern medicine presents physicians with complex challenges when planning patient treatment. Techniques from the field of Predictive Business Process Monitoring, like Next-activity-prediction (NAP) can be used as a promising technique to support physicians in treatment planning, by proposing a possible next treatment step. Existing patient data, often in the form of electronic health records, can be analyzed to recommend the next suitable step in the treatment process. However, the use of patient data poses many challenges due to its knowledge-intensive character, high variability and scarcity of medical data. To overcome these challenges, this article examines the use of the knowledge encoded in taxonomies to improve and explain the prediction of the next activity in the treatment process. This study proposes the TS4NAP approach, which uses medical taxonomies (ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS) in combination with graph matching to assess the similarities of medical codes to predict the next treatment step. The effectiveness of the proposed approach will be evaluated using event logs that are derived from the MIMIC-IV dataset. The results highlight the potential of using domain-specific knowledge held in taxonomies to improve the prediction of the next activity, and thus can improve treatment planning and decision-making by making the predictions more explainable.

Data Petri Nets meet Probabilistic Programming (Extended version)

Probabilistic programming (PP) is a programming paradigm that allows for writing statistical models like ordinary programs, performing simulations by running those programs, and analyzing and refining their statistical behavior using powerful inference engines. This paper takes a step towards leveraging PP for reasoning about data-aware processes. To this end, we present a systematic translation of Data Petri Nets (DPNs) into a model written in a PP language whose features are supported by most PP systems. We show that our translation is sound and provides statistical guarantees for simulating DPNs. Furthermore, we discuss how PP can be used for process mining tasks and report on a prototype implementation of our translation. We also discuss further analysis scenarios that could be easily approached based on the proposed translation and available PP tools.

Phosphorus cluster cations formed in doped helium nanodroplets are different

Positively charged cluster ions of phosphorus were formed upon electron ionization of doped helium nanodroplets. The vapors of red phosphorus and a phosphate sample were picked up into neutral and charged helium nanodroplets. Independent on the conditions used, the cluster size distributions exhibit pronounced odd-even oscillations that are opposite to almost all experimental and theoretical patterns published in the literature. The low temperature environment of the superfluid He matrix quenches fragmentation and the charged phosphorus clusters resemble the structure of the neutral precursors.

Declarative Guideline Conformance Checking of Clinical Treatments: A Case Study

Conformance checking is a process mining technique that allows verifying the conformance of process instances to a given model. Thus, this technique is predestined to be used in the medical context for the comparison of treatment cases with clinical guidelines. However, medical processes are highly variable, highly dynamic, and complex. This makes the use of imperative conformance checking approaches in the medical domain difficult. Studies show that declarative approaches can better address these characteristics. However, none of the approaches has yet gained practical acceptance. Another challenge are alignments, which usually do not add any value from a medical point of view. For this reason, we investigate in a case study the usability of the HL7 standard Arden Syntax for declarative, rule-based conformance checking and the use of manually modeled alignments. Using the approach, it was possible to check the conformance of treatment cases and create medically meaningful alignments for large parts of a medical guideline.

Complexes of gold and imidazole formed in helium nanodroplets

We have studied complexes of gold atoms and imidazole (C$_3$N$_2$H$_4$, abbreviated Im) produced in helium nanodroplets. Following the ionization of the doped droplets we detect a broad range of different Au$_m$Im$_n^+$ complexes, however we find that for specific values of $m$ certain $n$ are "magic" and thus particularly abundant. Our density functional theory calculations indicate that these abundant clusters sizes are partially the result of particularly stable complexes, e.g. AuIm$_2^+$, and partially due to a transition in fragmentation patterns from the loss of neutral imidazole molecules for large systems to the loss of neutral gold atoms for smaller systems.

Cs$^{+}$ Solvated in Hydrogen - Evidence for Several Distinct Solvation Shells

Helium nanodroplets are doped with cesium and molecular hydrogen and subsequently ionized by electrons. Mass spectra reveal H$_x$Cs$^{+}$ ions that contain as many as 130 hydrogen atoms. Two features in the spectra are striking: First, the abundance of ions with an odd number of hydrogen atoms is very low; the abundance of HCs$^+$ is only 1 % that of H$_2$Cs$^+$. The dominance of even-numbered species is in stark contrast to previous studies of pure or doped hydrogen cluster ions. Second, the abundance of (H$_2$)$_n$Cs$^+$ features anomalies at n = 8, 12, 32, 44, and 52. Guided by previous work on ions solvated in hydrogen and helium we assign the anomalies at n = 12, 32, 44 to the formation of three concentric, solid-like solvation shells of icosahedral symmetry around Cs$^+$. Preliminary density functional theory calculations for n $\le$ 14 are reported as well.

The adsorption of helium atoms on coronene cations

We report the first experimental study of the attachment of multiple foreign atoms to a cationic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH). The chosen PAH was coronene, C$_{24}$H$_{12}$, which was added to liquid helium nanodroplets and then subjected to electron bombardment. Using mass spectrometry, coronene cations decorated with helium atoms were clearly seen and the spectrum shows peaks with anomalously high intensities ("magic number" peaks), which represent ion-helium complexes with added stability. The data suggest formation of a rigid helium layer consisting of 38 helium atoms that completely covers both faces of the coronene ion. Additional magic numbers can be seen for the further addition of 3 and 6 helium atoms, which are thought to attach to the edge of the coronene. The observation of magic numbers for the addition of 38 and 44 helium atoms is in good agreement with a recent path integral Monte Carlo prediction for helium atoms on neutral coronene. An understanding of how atoms and molecules attach to PAH ions is important for a number of reasons including the potential role such complexes might play in the chemistry of the interstellar medium.

C$_{60}^+$ and the Diffuse Interstellar Bands: An Independent Laboratory Check

In 2015, Campbell et al. (Nature 523, 322) presented spectroscopic laboratory gas phase data for the fullerene cation, C$_{60}^+$, that coincide with reported astronomical spectra of two diffuse interstellar band (DIB) features at 9633 and 9578 Å. In the following year additional laboratory spectra were linked to three other and weaker DIBs at 9428, 9366, and 9349 Å. The laboratory data were obtained using wavelength-dependent photodissociation spectroscopy of small (up to three) He-tagged C$_{60}^+-$He$_n$ ion complexes, yielding rest wavelengths for the bare C$_{60}^+$ cation by correcting for the He-induced wavelength shifts. Here we present an alternative approach to derive the rest wavelengths of the four most prominent C$_{60}^+$ absorption features, using high resolution laser dissociation spectroscopy of C$_{60}^+$ embedded in ultracold He droplets. Accurate wavelengths of the bare fullerene cation are derived based on linear wavelength shifts recorded for He$_n$C$_{60}^+$ species with $n$ up to 32. A careful analysis of all available data results in precise rest wavelengths (in air) for the four most prominent C$_{60}^+$ bands: 9631.9(1) Å, 9576.7(1) Å, 9427.5(1) Å, and 9364.9(1) Å. The corresponding band widths have been derived and the relative band intensity ratios are discussed.

Fission of Multiply Charged Cesium and Potassium Clusters in Helium Droplets - Approaching the Rayleigh Limit

Electron ionization of helium droplets doped with cesium or potassium results in doubly and, for cesium, triply charged cluster ions. The smallest observable doubly charged clusters are $Cs_{9}^{2+}$ and $K_{11}^{2+}$; they are a factor two smaller than reported previously. The size of potassium dications approaches the Rayleigh limit nRay for which the fission barrier is calculated to vanish, i.e. their fissilities are close to 1. Cesium dications are even smaller than nRay, implying that their fissilities have been significantly overestimated. Triply charged cesium clusters as small as $Cs_{19}^{3+}$ are observed; they are a factor 2.6 smaller than previously reported. Mechanisms that may be responsible for enhanced formation of clusters with high fissilities are discussed.
