What is research?

Doing research is fighting, what any other thing the human being could do? Fight against powers or to get powers, that depends on us. Science can be a revolution or deadlocked idleness. Still waters, without hitting the stones along their history, trend to form bogs.

Multiwavelength study of the bright X-ray source population in the interacting galaxies NGC5774/NGC5775

A few nearby interacting galaxies are known that host elevated number of ultraluminous X-ray sources. Here we report the results of a multiwavelength study of the X-ray source population in the field of the interacting pair of galaxies NGC5774/NGC5775. A total of 49 discrete sources are detected, including 12 ultraluminous X-ray source candidates. X-ray source positions are mapped onto optical and radio images to search for potential counterparts. Twelve sources in the field have optical counterparts. Optical colors are used to differentiate these sources, which are mostly located outside the optical extent of the interacting galaxies, as potential globular clusters (2), one compact blue dwarf galaxy and quasars (5). We obtained optical spectra of two of the latter, which confirm that they are background quasars. We expect 3 background sources in the field of these two galaxies. These results are used to determine the true X-ray population of these two interacting galaxies, which are connected with two bridges. Two high mass X-ray binaries are detected on these two bridges suggesting their formation through the interaction-induced starformation episode.

Observational Cosmology: caveats and open questions in the standard model

I will review some results of observational cosmology which critically cast doubt upon the foundations of the standard cosmology: 1) The redshifts of the galaxies are due to the expansion of the Universe; 2) The cosmic microwave background radiation and its anisotropies come from the high energy primordial Universe; 3) The abundance pattern of the light elements is to be explained in terms of the primordial nucleosynthesis; 4) The formation and evolution of galaxies can only be explained in terms of gravitation in the cold dark matter theory of an expanding Universe. The review does not pretend to argue against this standard scenario in favour of an alternative theory, but to claim that cosmology is still a very young science and should leave the door wide open to other positions.

Large-scale CMB anisotropies: wrinkles in the Galaxy rather than in time

Withdrawm. Public data of COBE-DMR are not perfectly subtracted from dipole. Therefore, the Galactic latitude dependence is affected by the remnants of the dipole and the results previously announced in this paper about this are not valid. Anyway, the suspect of a high Galactic contamination announced in another paper (Lopez-Corredoira 1999; A&A 346, 369) is still valid and to be considered. Thanks are given to Ted Bunn for helpful discussions which made me realize of the problem with the dipole.
