Sequential Equilibria in a Class of Infinite Extensive Form Games

Sequential equilibrium is one of the most fundamental refinements of Nash equilibrium for games in extensive form. However, it is not defined for extensive-form games in which a player can choose among a continuum of actions. We define a class of infinite extensive form games in which information behaves continuously as a function of past actions and define a natural notion of sequential equilibrium for this class. Sequential equilibria exist in this class and refine Nash equilibria. In standard finite extensive-form games, our definition selects the same strategy profiles as the traditional notion of sequential equilibrium.

Current Status and Future Prospects for the Light Dark Matter eXperiment

The constituents of dark matter are still unknown, and the viable possibilities span a vast range of masses. The physics community has established searching for sub-GeV dark matter as a high priority and identified accelerator-based experiments as an essential facet of this search strategy. A key goal of the accelerator-based dark matter program is testing the broad idea of thermally produced sub-GeV dark matter through experiments designed to directly produce dark matter particles. The most sensitive way to search for the production of light dark matter is to use a primary electron beam to produce it in fixed-target collisions. The Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX) is an electron-beam fixed-target missing-momentum experiment that realizes this approach and provides unique sensitivity to light dark matter in the sub-GeV range. This contribution provides an overview of the theoretical motivation, the main experimental challenges, how LDMX addresses these challenges, and projected sensitivities. We further describe the capabilities of LDMX to explore other interesting new and standard physics, such as visibly-decaying axion and vector mediators or rare meson decays, and to provide timely electronuclear scattering measurements that will inform the modeling of neutrino-nucleus scattering for DUNE.

Oxide-stabilized microstructure of severe plastically deformed CuCo alloys

Nanocrystalline materials are well known for their beneficial mechanical and physical properties. However, it is of utmost importance to stabilize the microstructure at elevated temperatures to broaden the window of application e.g. by pinning grain boundaries through impurities or oxides. CuCo alloys, severe plastically deformed using high-pressure torsion, were used to investigate the evolution of oxides upon annealing. These investigations were performed using electron microscopy, synchrotron high-energy X-ray scattering and atom probe tomography. Monitoring the evolution of oxides by in-situ small angle scattering investigations indicates the growth of primary oxides as well as the formation of another species of oxide at elevated temperatures. Slightly different coarsening can be observed in heat-treated samples, which can be traced back to the influence of different oxide amounts. The initially supersaturated CuCo matrix changes by the decomposition process as well as Co- and Cu-based oxides formation and growth. It has been found that the major number of oxides which are present after annealing, can already be found in the starting materials.

Dielectrophoretic force-driven convection in annular geometry under Earth's gravity

Context: A radial temperature gradient together with an inhomogeneous radial electric field gradient is applied to a dielectric fluid confined in a vertical cylindrical annulus inducing thermal electro-hydrodynamic convection. Aims: Identification of the stability of the flow and hence of the line of marginal stability separating stable laminar free (natural) convection from thermal electro-hydrodynamic convection, its flow structures, pattern formation and critical parameters. Methods: Combination of different measurement techniques, namely the shadowgraph method and particle image velocimetry, as well as numerical simulation are used to qualify/quantify the flow. Results: We identify the transition from stable laminar free convection to thermal electro-hydrodynamic convective flow in a wide range of Rayleigh number and electric potential. The line of marginal stability found confirms results from linear stability analysis. The flow after first transition forms a structure of vertically aligned stationary columnar modes. We experimentally confirm critical parameters resulting from linear stability analysis and we show numerically an enhancement of heat transfer.

A new strategy for Robbins' problem of optimal stopping

In this article we study the expected rank problem under full information. Our approach uses the planar Poisson approach from Gnedin (2007) to derive the expected rank of a stopping rule that is one of the simplest non-trivial examples combining rank dependent rules with threshold rules. This rule attains an expected rank lower than the best upper bounds obtained in the literature so far, in particular we obtain an expected rank of 2.32614.

Finitely additive beliefs and universal type spaces

The probabilistic type spaces in the sense of Harsanyi [Management Sci. 14 (1967/68) 159--182, 320--334, 486--502] are the prevalent models used to describe interactive uncertainty. In this paper we examine the existence of a universal type space when beliefs are described by finitely additive probability measures. We find that in the category of all type spaces that satisfy certain measurability conditions ($κ$-measurability, for some fixed regular cardinal $κ$), there is a universal type space (i.e., a terminal object) to which every type space can be mapped in a unique beliefs-preserving way. However, by a probabilistic adaption of the elegant sober-drunk example of Heifetz and Samet [Games Econom. Behav. 22 (1998) 260--273] we show that if all subsets of the spaces are required to be measurable, then there is no universal type space.
