Bistable Quad-Nets Composed of Four-Bar Linkages

We study a novel type of mechanical structures, composed of spatial four-bar linkages, that are bistable, that is, they allow for two distinct configurations. These structures have an interpretation as quad nets in the Study quadric which we use to prove existence of assemblies with an unbounded number of links and joints. We propose a purely geometric construction of such objects, starting from infinitesimally flexible quad nets in Euclidean space and applying Whiteley de-averaging. This point of view situates the problem within the broader framework of discrete differential geometry and enables the construction of bistable structures from well-known classes of quad nets, such as discrete minimal surfaces. In contrast to many other construction methods for bistable structures, our approach does not rely on numerical optimization and it allows for simple control of relevant geometric parameters such as axis positions and snap angles.

Conics Quadrics Mapping & Cones

An efficient way to get implicit equations of conics on five points and quadrics on nine, using pencils of conics and quadrics, is revealed. Parallel axis right cones intersect on a conic. An example, to show how to place five coplanar points on a cone, using kinematic mapping with dual quaternions is presented. A second congruent cone is found as a translation of the first. Cone symmetry helps to explain how mapping produces eight real solutions, apparently all different, belong to a unique cone pair intersection. Future extension of this, pertaining to a nine point quadric, can be contrived if a way to map planar points to parallel axis cones is formulated.

Computer-Aided Design of Rational Motions for 4R and 6R Spatial Mechanism Synthesis

This paper focuses on geometric methods for generating rational motions used in the design of single-loop rational linkages, 1-degree-of-freedom mechanisms that can execute prescribed spatial tasks. Building on established rational motion synthesis methods, we introduce a new interpolation scheme for seven 3D points based on cubic quaternionic Bezier curves. The resulting motion admits factorization, i.e. the synthesis of a spatial six-bar mechanism whose tool frame passes the specified seven points. To support engineering practice, we provide open-source CAD tools that implement also the other methods and provide fast visual evaluation of motion generation and mechanism synthesis.

Rational Linkages: From Poses to 3D-printed Prototypes

In this paper, a set of tools is introduced that simplifies the synthesis and rapid-prototyping of single-loop rational kinematic chains. It allows the user to perform rational motion interpolation of up to four given poses and yields the design parameters of a linkage that can execute this motion. The package also provides a visualization of the output and performs a self-collision analysis with the possibility to adapt the design parameters. The results can be imported into CAD-systems for fast 3D printing.

An Overconstrained Vertical Darboux Mechanism

In this article, we will construct an overconstrained closed-loop linkage consisting of four revolute and one cylindrical joint. It is obtained by factorization of a prescribed vertical Darboux motion. We will investigate the kinematic behaviour of the obtained mechanism, which turns out to have multiple operation modes. Under certain conditions on the design parameters, two of the operation modes will correspond to vertical Darboux motions. It turns out, that for these design parameters, there also exists a second assembly mode.

An Automated Conversion Between Selected Robot Kinematic Representations

This paper presents a methodology that forms an automated tool for robot kinematic representation conversion, called the RobKin Interpreter. It is a set of analytical algorithms that apply basic linear algebra tools that can analyze an input serial robot representation, express the joints globally in matrix form, and map to other representations such as standard Denavit-Hartenberg parameters, Roll-Pitch-Yaw angles with translational displacement, and Product of Exponentials with a possibility to generate a URDF (Universal Robot Description Format) file from any of them. It works for revolute and prismatic joints and can interpret even arbitrary kinematic structures that do not have orthogonally placed joints and often appear in flexible robotic systems. The aim of the proposed methods is to facilitate the necessary switches between representations due to software compatibility, calculation simplification, or cooperation.

A Multi-Bennett 8R Mechanism Obtained From Factorization of Bivariate Motion Polynomials

We present a closed-loop 8R mechanism with two degrees of freedom whose motion exhibits curious properties. In any point of a two-dimensional component of its configuration variety it is possible to fix every second joint while retaining one degree of freedom. This shows that the even and the odd axes, respectively, always form a Bennett mechanism. In this mechanism, opposite distances and angles are equal and all offsets are zero. The 8R mechanism has four "totally aligned" configurations in which the common normals of any pair of consecutive axes coincide.

Analysis of a 3-RUU Parallel Manipulator

The aim of this paper is to give a detailed examination of the input and output singularities of a 3-RUU parallel manipulator in the translational operation mode. This task is achieved by using algebraic constraint equations. For this type of manipulator a complete workspace representation in Study coordinates is presented after elimination of the input parameters. Both, input and output singularities are mapped into a Study subspace as well as into the joint space. Therewith a detailed singularity investigation of the translational operation mode of a 3-RUU parallel manipulator is provided. This paper is an extended version of a previous publication. The addendum comprises the discovery of a possible transition between two operation modes as well as a self motion and an examination of another component of the output singularity surface, most of them for arbitrary design parameters.

Space Kinematics and Projective Differential Geometry Over the Ring of Dual Numbers

We study an isomorphism between the group of rigid body displacements and the group of dual quaternions modulo the dual number multiplicative group from the viewpoint of differential geometry in a projective space over the dual numbers. Some seemingly weird phenomena in this space have lucid kinematic interpretations. An example is the existence of non-straight curves with a continuum of osculating tangents which correspond to motions in a cylinder group with osculating vertical Darboux motions. We also suggest geometrically meaningful ways to select osculating conics of a curve in this projective space and illustrate their corresponding motions. Furthermore, we investigate factorizability of these special motions and use the obtained results for the construction of overconstrained linkages.

Factorization of Dual Quaternion Polynomials Without Study's Condition

In this paper we investigate factorizations of polynomials over the ring of dual quaternions into linear factors. While earlier results assume that the norm polynomial is real ("motion polynomials"), we only require the absence of real polynomial factors in the primal part and factorizability of the norm polynomial over the dual numbers into monic quadratic factors. This obviously necessary condition is also sufficient for existence of factorizations. We present an algorithm to compute factorizations of these polynomials and use it for new constructions of mechanisms which cannot be obtained by existing factorization algorithms for motion polynomials. While they produce mechanisms with rotational or translational joints, our approach yields mechanisms consisting of "vertical Darboux joints". They exhibit mechanical deficiencies so that we explore ways to replace them by cylindrical joints while keeping the overall mechanism sufficiently constrained.
