Fourier imaging of collective spontaneous emission modes in superradiant cold atomic clouds

We measure the spatial pattern associated with the superradiant emission from a cloud of cold 87Rb atoms using Fourier imaging. We observe a highly directional, ring-shaped emission structure, which corresponds to a single collective jump operator associated to the most superradiant mode of the ensemble. Using spatial filtering, we isolate this channel and find the typical superradiant burst with superlinear scaling of the intensity with atom number. We compare our results to two models that describe the competition between the various decay channels, finding good agreement. Our work shows that the collective jump operators introduced by Carmichael et al. [Optics Communications 179, 417 (2000)] can be measured and manipulated.

Microwave spectroscopy and multi-channel quantum defect analysis of ytterbium Rydberg states

The complex Rydberg structure of ytterbium atoms is shaped by multiple low-lying ion-core-excited states and strong channel interactions, which presents both opportunities and challenges for quantum information processing and precision metrology. In this work, we extend high-resolution microwave spectroscopy and multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT) modeling of singly excited $6sn\ell$ Rydberg states in $^{174}$Yb and $^{171}$Yb to include the $\ell = 3$ ($f$) and $\ell = 4$ ($g$) series. Our measurements reveal $p$-$f$ mixing in odd-parity Rydberg states of $^{171}$Yb, which we incorporate by combined MQDT models for $6snp$ and $6snf$ series. Additionally, we observe that for $\ell = 4$ the spin-orbit interaction dominates over the exchange interaction, such that the $6sng$ states are more accurately described in a $jj$-coupled basis. We validate our models by comparing the predicted Land\'e $g$-factors and static dipole polarizabilities with experimental measurements, finding excellent agreement. These results provide important input for designing high-fidelity entangling gates with ytterbium atoms.

Ultra-precise holographic optical tweezers array

Neutral atoms trapped in microscopic optical tweezers have emerged as a growing platform for quantum science. Achieving homogeneity over the tweezers array is an important technical requirement, and our research focuses on improving it for holographic arrays generated with a Spatial Light Modulator (SLM). We present a series of optimization methods to calculate better holograms, fueled by precise measurement schemes. These innovations enable to achieve intensity homogeneity with a relative standard deviation of 0.3 %, shape variations below 0.5 %, and positioning errors within 70 nm. Such ultra-precise holographic optical tweezers arrays allow for the most demanding applications in quantum science with atomic arrays.
